If Kiwi gets to Roger, I think he could have a good chance on clay. He gets close on the other surfaces and clay is Roger's worst... We shall see!! :yeah:

I think the draw is quite okay. At least he got no really big names in the first two rounds. It could have been really worse on the paper with people like Almagro, Simon, Serra, Safin, Monfils who really would be a tricky first/2nd round. Let's see if Berdych is even going to make it through. Of course Federer is a very difficult opponent, but at least that's already in round 4 ;)

IMO Kiwi is really playing some of the best stuff from the baseline since long time. Since Düsseldorf this changed and his groundstrokes look really good. And of course the usual good footwork is there as well and his serve is better too again (when watching him the last weeks, there was a time when I thought he can't hit anymore fast serves). I hope that Gicquel won't be a hindrance for him to reach the 3rd round :yeah:

7-0 against Jürgen Melzer now... damn it, I wish he would have this h2h against somebody I don't like :o

WTF!!!
Unbelievable how he owned him in the first two sets and then made it so difficult. Also it was difficult to stay concentrated and tough all the time because of the three (?!) rain delays.

It was not so nice to watch, but thanksfully he won it somehow and reaching the 3rd round was the minimum goal with this draw, I would say!

Congrats Kiwi! :D

My family was here who don't even like tennis. I walked in the house (thank god i started recording just in case before i left) and everyone was like "MARY LOOK!!!!!!!" and I was freaking out. They all sat there and watched the whole thing too cheering him on  It was funny because of the people here, no one likes tennis. Kiwi is universal! It was an entertaining match for those who aren't tennis fans. They were all yelling as much as I was!

The match might have been a bit messy, but the way he stuck in there and kept fighting was amazing. I always worry he'll lose it a bit and let the match slip away, but he fought with every point.

Now time to prepare for Berdych. and some pictures :hearts:

Kiwi's post match interview.

Q. The tournament would like to thank you for not also throwing your shorts into the stands after the match, that was very kind.
NICOLAS KIEFER: Yeah. I mean, was tough. What can you do? You play for such long time, yeah, everything came up.

Q. On a day like this, very cold, is there a point in a long match where your legs begin to not respond because of the cold weather, your arms?
NICOLAS KIEFER: No, it's not a point of the weather. I mean, it was okay. You have to get used to it. You have to get ready. For sure, I mean, I had a great start. Then first rain break was coming. I came out very slow. Then another rain break was coming. I think it's quite normal that you also get a little bit nervous. He was playing better and better. And I just tried to find my game, focus on my game.

I had many chances, but I just didn't take them.

Q. The football jersey you wore last week with the No. 69 on the back. Does that designate something?
NICOLAS KIEFER: No, it's just my official jersey number in Hannover.

Q. What was it like to win in that way?
NICOLAS KIEFER: Well, I mean, I prefer to make it easier. But, no, was not easy. I mean, I started very good. I played unbelievably great tennis first two sets. Came out a little slow in the third set. He played much better.

No, at the end of the day, it counts a win, what's on the paper. A win is a win. I know I had a tough match like this a few matches in Melbourne also.

I would prefer to save some energy.

Q. How was it emotionally at the end for you?
NICOLAS KIEFER: I was just hoping that this ball is flying out. I had the wind against me, so it can also bounce on the line. I don't know what would have happened then. I mean, I had so many chances, I just didn't take them. This is what makes me a little disappointed. Just have to keep on going, what I did before. That's the way how I have to play.

Q. Had you ever heard of Marc Gicquel before today?
NICOLAS KIEFER: Yeah, I saw him playing before a few tournaments. We never played against each other. Sometimes it's not easy. But on the other side, you have to get used to it. I had a great start. I played very good. I played my game. Then I think he was a little bit more relaxed and played better and better and better. He made it very difficult for me.

At the end of the day, I came out a little bit stronger. I feel good. That's also the most important thing for me.

Q. When you were on the court, did you think he was playing the match of his life?
NICOLAS KIEFER: Well, I mean, for him it was I think easier because he had all the support. No, what I can say was it was a great atmosphere. It was nice to play out there, but sometimes not easy.

Q. There seems some ambiguity about that final ball in Marc's press conference. You saw it out clearly?
NICOLAS KIEFER: Yes. He didn't?

Q. It looked in on the television.
NICOLAS KIEFER: It was close, but it was out.

Q. Could have asked the chair umpire to inspect the mark if he wanted to.
NICOLAS KIEFER: Right.

Q. What is your history on the court with Berdych?
NICOLAS KIEFER: Good question. I mean, last week he beat me in Dusseldorf. It was a great match. For sure he had an easy win today. I had a long one. Still, I think I can play ‑‑ I could keep on going. The tournament just started.

Physically I'm ready. I have one more day off, then I'm ready to go again.

Q. He's been often praised as a coming star. Hasn't quite gotten there yet. What are his particular advantages on the court?
NICOLAS KIEFER: As you said, he's a great player. I think everybody's waiting for him to go up in the ranking. I think he's a great player. He's like 20 or 21 years old. He's tall, he's moving good, he's hitting the ball very good. It's going to be very difficult. As you said, he's one of the upcoming guys.

What did Kiwi say to the linesman at 5-5 in the third set? I think it started with "fuck". :tape: And did he get a warning for that?
Damn, I also would like to know what it was exactly. I could only hear something like "a fuck" or "a fucking", but then the applause was too load and I couldn't identify it anymore. (I let Mary listen to it, maybe she can identify it as she should understand English better with some background noise :) or it was a mixture of English/French/German insult *g*)

Yes, I think the warning was for that, but it didn't come immediately. I think it was one point later, right?

IMO it was a negligence of the line umpire because normally they should duck balls out of the way if possible (and he had enough time to do so) and Kiefer was hindered in his swing a little bith when returning this smash from far back in the court. It would have been interesting what would have happened if Kiwi hit the line umpire on that play with his racket when swinging for the ball. He can be blamed for screaming at him, but I think nothing could be done if he touched him with his racket as it's not the player's duty to take care of where the line umpire is standing. That would have been interesting :p and you can guess a lot of people would have gone outrage again over this "bad behaviour" :)

As far as I remember, he said "fucking prick". Kiwi really has to learn to control himself. There's no reason for him to insult people like that. Things like this don't help him, they might even cause a lack of concentration. I think I don't even have to add that he won't get support from the spectators when he behaves like that.

Well, a few comments on today's match. He played well in the first 2 sets, but he didn't play as great as the commentator said. Kiwi did no more than what was absolutely necessary. He only held the ball in play because Gicquel made many easy mistakes. What really disappointed me was Kiwi's absolutely chicken-hearted play when he had mps in the fifth set. He only played weak backhand crosscourt shots and hoped that his opponent would do him the favour of making the mistake. I don't know why he can't play aggresive throughout a whole match. There are always moments when he goes 3 meters behind the baseline and just hopes for the mistakes of his opponent. He has a great repertoire of shots and he should use them constantly. Anyways, he really has to step it up big time against Berdych. If he plays like this on Friday, he'll lose.

I think Kiwi was very controled today. He did not smash a racket, did not argue heavily about any line call, I think he never cried out when he missed a shot  and believed in his chance all the time and did not panic even when missing all these match points. So except this situation with this line umpire (and yes, I can understand he was pissed off, still he shouldn't have done it of course) his behaviour was good today. He even excused himself for being late at the changeover or asked his opponent twice if he was alright as Gicquel slipped on the court or when his first attempt for the ball toss was not exact, I mean that's not always the thing either and I thought so when I noticed it.

It's well known for him that he often has the problem to stay agressive the whole match, it's not understandable for me either, but okay  It's just in his head and he falls back to it from time to time. That he should have played more offensive at his match points goes without saying, I agree with you :yeah: Also he will never be supported by a lot of crowds because he just doesn't have the lobby for it and he made himself this image to be a bad boy and he recently admitted that some love him and some hate him and that he knows that.

I don't know but the more negative things I hear the more I'm starting to question how long I'm gunna be a fan of his. I know that might sound a bit crazy to some of you. After all I am a fond believer in once u're a fan u're always a fan pholosophy. but at some point I think we all have to draw the line.

I'm a fan of Kiwi cuz he is an extremely versatile player( can hit any shot in the book) he so talented. I also love his fighting spirt. But what happened @ the AO and what's happening here at the French, are riduculous. I've tried giving him the benefit of the doubt the majority of the time, but in this case w/ the ball girl(his almost if not hitting a ball girl). i think it's pretty inescusable considering he acted like he new nothing about and btw, never has apologized for any of his wrong doings this year. I still am supporting him, by watching his matches and coming here and commenting on his results, but I sware if he does another rediculous thing............. I think the reason why I'm hangin around is I think Kiwi is a good guy and obviously he's entertaining to watch. He just loses his head when he gets out on the court.. But I think he should take responsibilities for his actions.

But w/e I think I'll always be a fan, I just wish he'd just stop the stupid stuff

Also keep in mind that that writer made it sound like Kiwi was the most evil person on earth and seemed to have dramatized everything 100x over. I didn't see anything that happened in that set, so I am not gonna make judgements as to what happened based on what this guy said and what Kiwi-haters have said in GM.

I've had Kiwi as my fave player for like seven years now and if all the ups and downs and finals with no titles haven't gotten him to budge from the #1 spot, nothing will. You never get bored as a Kiwi fan, that's for sure. I can honestly say that he'll always be my fave... I dunno what that says about me and my mental state, but that's how it is for me. ;)

This report and a lot of others which I read look very over-dramatized by most writers. I have watched the whole thing and I did not see this incident with the ball girl at all. Maybe I was gone for one minute exactly at this moment?! If he did hit this ball girl intentionally; yes, that is really bad and such things should never happen because the ball girl has nothing to do with that at all. About the cursing at the line umpire, I don't see that as bad. They know what they are up to when taking such a job to judge about players and being involved in outcomes, every ref in every other sport knows that too and who ever was at a football field knows how bad it really can become  As for the rest, he was quiet for the rest of the match and accepted every other decision immediately after the ref checked the mark and was cool enough to win it at the end making the important points or saving critical situations at 0-30.

I hope he can play with high confidence going for his shots the WHOLE match today. He really needs to play very well IMO because Berdych also is in good form and has beaten him the last two times already.

If he had intentionally hit a ballgirl they would be discussing it EVERYWHERE and not one random small comment of it. IMO.

I think so as well. Even the racket-thing in Australia was more than overdramatised, so I´m sure they would not just discuss it in every news, but he would as well get excluded from the turney, I mean, nobody want to see a pro hit a ballgirl. usually he grubled a little bit because she wasn´t fast enough, that wouldn´t happen the first time. And in such a situation - for havens sake, who wouldn´t be stressed?

Ugh. It would be easier for my schedule if he plays tomorrow  but I want him to be rested if he wins and plays Rogerer on Sunday......................................... I at least want them to get their match started today. :)

True somehow. And with 10 line umpires and a chair umpire on the court of which one would have certainly seen this, he most likely would have been disqualified immediately and not gotten away with a code of conduct warning and a ridiculous fine of 1500$.

Yes, it could be, but if Robredo finishes before 20:30 or so, I think they would very likely start it. I heard the commentator on Eurosport mentioned something that until some deadline matches are started even though it's clear that it can't be finished (due to darkness).

Also another common procedure is that the final match of any court may be moved if the organizers see that they are in delay with their planned schedule. But as the other bigger courts are also not much quicker, I don't think they would move this match from court #1 to court #3 or even some more minor court.

Well it doesn't look like there's gonna be a fight out there, so Kiwi should be on today in a bit. :yeah:

Yeah, if there is no rain and if Robredo is not going to five sets now (damn, as I wrote this he just had 0-40 on his first try serving it out...), Kiwi will definitely start playing today. Better would be if he could finish it successfully today :smoke: But that's not so easy like we say it :sobbing:

except two minutes or so I'm listening/watching Eurosport since the 2nd set of Federer vs Massu
They only said that Kiwi retired after losing the first set 1-6 and that's all. No more news on that so far.

eurosport.de:
DPA:

They just say, he gave up, not why. and nothing on Nicolas page!

ARD teletext is saying that he retired after the first set because of a left(!) wrist injury which happened due to a fall on the court (not sure if they mean his match against Gicquel or today against Berdych.

I'm glad it's not again his serious injury with the right wrist. Also he can at least keep on some practise while recovering from that. And overall, I hope the left wrist injury is not severe, hopefully nothing broken or seriously hurt; maybe only strained which goes away again without demage!

i just found this one on eurosport.com:
Nicolas Kiefer was forced to withdraw from his match against Tomas Berdych on Friday with a knee injury having lost the first set 6-1.

And another statement in the DSF teletext, Kiwi said: "My left wrist was swollen. We tried our best to cure it within the given time, but it was not enough".

Overall I'm relieved it is only "that". When you hear wrist injury, it could be more severe too, especially with Kiwi
