Federer def Mirnyi 6-3 4-6 6-4!
Congrats Rogi for your first victory of the year!

In doubles though, Verkerk/Dementieva def. Federer/Navratilova 8-5...

Oh, close one, Max. Nothing to be ashamed about. Meanwhile, Roger should be ashamed for wearing that outfit. :o ;)

I'm shocked that Federer/Navratilova lost the doubles to Verker/Dementieva, not exactly the most qualified team in doubles competition.

You're right Leo, if he turns up to the AO wearing that monstrosity I may have to reconsider supporting him... actually I wouldn't go that far, but making yourself look a bit of an idiot isn't a good idea when you're challenging for the no. 1 spot. Also, I'm not that surprised that Federer and Navratilova lost - from the sounds of it Dementieva sensibly drilled her shots at Federer when he was at the net and he couldn't handle it, and I wonder whether the two of them match up temperament-wise; Martina N would seem to be a fairly bossy and overbearing character whereas I'm not sure Federer is.

Fedex
01-08-2004, 11:45 PM
Well, this may be proof that Federer is not in form to win the Aussie Open. I mean come on losing to Verkerk/Dementieva, when youre playing with perhaps the greatest ever female player. Clearly not at his best. When someone said that Federer couldnt handle Dementieva's shots at the net, theres your proof! If he can handle Nalbandian's & Agassi's shots from the net well, he shouldent have ANY problem handling Dementiev's. I also wouldn't expect it to take him 3 sets to defeat Miryni either, if he's at Wimbledon form

You don't think? The darker red he wore last year suited him very well. Maybe this is a bit bright. But surely it can't be worse than the stuff at last year's AO?

Clearly he wasnt in peak form in either of those matches. And yes Martina's far from her peak, but she still can win doubles grand slams. I just hope he does better in his next singles match. If he has trouble returning Elena's returns, then he wont be prepared to face Agassi, or David. They, as we know, can return much harder

if roger had trouble with like 2 or 3 returns over the match, people would still be saying roger struggled with an elena return. it is surprising when it happens, so ppl have the tendency to remember that-- could be the case. anyway, from what i've heard, martina was by and large the worst player on the court, and ive found that when i play with someone who isn't cutting it, i try to overcompensate. we can't really judge how well roger can compete in a grand slam by how he plays in mixed doubles exhibition

I watched the single match on tv.

Yes it's an exhibition match. So pls don't take it too seriously. Roger was having fun all round with himself and the audience. He was smiling all round and from beginning till end. Never seen him so generous with his smiles, which made me wonder what on earth made him so happy there?

The second set...Roger simply dropped it away with 3:1 up a break. Made a lot of unbelievable errors which surely won't happen in a formal match. Guess he just wanted to entertain the audience. He really had the match in his control. Just like that whenever he wanted the match over, he ended it and won, and vice versa, whenever he didn't want to, he let it go on.

I quite enjoy his attitude there, no pressure, relaxed and casual, enjoying his own tennis...A great feeling really.

I really think it's because it's an exhibition match that's why the results is like that... and besides... if we want to be nasty, we can take it that since elena lost to sharapova in her singles match( in straight sets somemore), does it mean that sharapova is better than federer now?

All in all, it's just the start of the season and his first few matches... i bet we'll see better playing against ferrero tomolo...it's gonna be a close one i think... :)

Looks like federer will be playing after all in the mixed doubles finals... i got this news from the womens'tennisforum...

"...... Federer/Navratilova, who were let play the Final with the consent of Verkerk/Dementieva. The organisers claimed the consent was obtained with the desire to satisfy the local crowd's eagerness to see Martina Navratilova again before her second retirement."

It's gonna be massive cos the other finalist in the mixed doubles is mirnyi and venus!!!!!

Hope some guys here besides me can read it! Fed is so humble and lovely! In the article it mentioned Peter Carter adamantly claimed Fed was a talent in century when he met him at the age of 8. It also talked about how Fed went through the difficult times of summer 2002 when he lost 1st round Wimbledon and lost his mentor. Best wishes to Fed and I would say "he is as graceful as his own game!"

Thanks for the article shaoyu. He credited his wonderful year to mainly lucks. He thought that without elements of luck, he couldn't have done that! Funny I think about that too, lots of time it's inevitable that luck plays an important part. After all winning requires elements of talent, hardwork, persistency, determination and definitely luck as well!

For the benefit of some of you who are interested. The article had many facts that all of you had known. One thing that he mentioned is each time he enters a tournament, he hardly think he will win coz there're so many great players out there and it's hard for him to imagine the winning trophy will land on him eventually at the initial stage. Basically the repoter find him to be "too humble" as a wimbledon champion from this interview.

Heck!!!
Roger sometimes played awesome, but other time he played like crap. JC was doing the routine work. All was in Roger's hand. It's like either his winners or stupid errors. Roger seemed not care that much, even had some naughty eye and body communication during the changeover with someone in the audience though I couldn't catch who was it. Seem like Roger have to find a coach to have his mind cleared and to help him draw close attention to the very thing happening on court. Something old really.

Anyway, it's only an exhibition.

Even though it's just an exhibition, ROGER's lost made me a little disappointed. Fantastic shots and inexplicable unforce errors both came from his hands. He didn't focus too much on his match and chucked away too many chances with his terrible inadvertence. it will become fatal for him if he still play so absent-mindedly in AO.

the new coach should help him in his mind more than his skills, but can he find a suitable coach before the AO? if not, he have to go there alone and handle all the matters by himself. OH GOSH~

Hard to tell. I got the feeling that he was not giving his all. There were great shots once in a while like he always does in almost every match, but more was that he dealt with the ball rashly, which I'm in firm belief that he won't during a formal match. For him, the tourney was really more entertainment than competition.

Maybe Kooyong is also not the place we can find the answer. Remember him saying that he lost each practice match before TMC Houston and we all know how he turned out to be. So I'll be patient enough to wait and see AO directly.

Roger seemed not care that much, even had some naughty eye and body communication during the changeover with someone in the audience though I couldn't catch who was it. .lol
I dunno why, but I found that funny. You know Roger only win whe we don't expect too. Like the Tennis Master cup, with the H2H he had with others, we expect him not to win , but he did.

No, Roger is a lot smarter than people give him credit for. He wasn't into this match from the reports but JC still won. I do think Roger will be geared up more for next week. I do think it would be very bad for him to play Oz with no coach but I think he could do ok there, I don't see him winning it that is for sure.

Yup

I'm desperately curious about that. But the photogragher simply didn't let me see what happened actually.

You know how Roger had the icy face during match, in most of the pics of the matches in HK, he is smiling.Look like he is having fun.He looks very young when he smile.

Shy, I'm wondering why those HK pics of Roger are all showing his icy look on court. To me, Roger is totally an amusing child in HK. He even smiled today when he was losing as if he was winning, as the commentator said.

Well, Federer you could of atleast TRIED in your match against JC!! Straight sets??? I wont judge that youre not in form until Kooyong, even there it will be hard to decide. I,after all, did not expect Roger to win TMC, after his loss to Henman. At least he cared about doubles. Seems like Martina played much better today ;) Heard she played pretty badly in the first match

Least this wont go on his head2head record with JC. Its tied at 4-4, in truth this seems just as much a rivalry as Federer-Roddick. Only not so one sided

4-4 sounds like a close rivalry to me - much closer than 5-1. And at least Federer/Ferrero have had some really competitive and entertaining matches (i.e. US Open 2000, Madrid 2003).

Something tells me the players were not at their full effort here either. Very strange for Max/Venus to lose so easily

Yes and a much more interesting and competitive rivalry! This is one I hope will continue -- on all surfaces! Two of my faves battling it out!! Now that's great tennis!
