Lleyton has awesome hair :hearts: but god, do I hate that David Beckham-style hairdo some of the boys have been sporting lately (Mardy Fish wore this half-up, half-down ponytail recently too :ras: ). I don't like it on Lleyton, either, but it doesn't look nearly as bad on him as it did on Mardy.

Thumbs up on the DC outfits. :yeah: Love the colors. :D

Green and Gold are the colour of Wattle (the sort of unofficial native plant-'Wattle Day' is usually in the first week of August I think) and the blue, red and white colours of the flag are derived from our British ancestry and I think we just wanted to be individuals... well it sounds like a nice theory and if it's true then go me:p

Hmmph! I'm frigging fed up of the Brits always being blamed for this driving malarkey. If you read your history you would know that originally all road traffic kept to the left. NAPOLEON changed it to the right because after he lost his right arme he couldnt defend himself with his right side, so he changed all th roads to driving on the right so he could defend himself with his left arm.

So blame the sodding in French if you have to keep having a go!! If it hadnt been for Nappy, the whole bloody world would still be driving on the left, okay!!

ahhh. Napoleon was left handed! Gee whiz! He should have played tennis. ;)

This strange quirk perplexes the rest of the world; however, there is a perfectly good reason.

Up to the late 1700's, everybody travelled on the left side of the road because it's the sensible option for feudal, violent societies of mostly right-handed people.

Jousting knights with their lances under their right arm naturally passed on each other's right, and if you passed a stranger on the road you walked on the left to ensure that your protective sword arm was between yourself and him.

Revolutionary France, however, overturned this practice as part of its sweeping social rethink. A change was carried out all over continental Europe by Napoleon. The reason it changed under Napoleon was because he was left handed his armies had to march on the right so he could keep his sword arm between him and any opponent.

From then on, any part of the world which was at some time part of the British Empire was thus left hand and any part colonised by the French was right hand.

In America, the French colonised the southern states (Louisiana for instance) and the Canadian east coast (Quebec). The Dutch colonised New York (or New Amsterdam). The Spanish and Portugese colonised the southern Americas. So The British were a minority in shaping the 'traffic'.

The drive-on-the-right policy was adopted by the USA, which was anxious to cast off all remaining links with its British colonial past

Once America drove on the right, left-side driving was ultimately doomed. If you wanted a good reliable vehicle, you bought American, for a period they only manufactured right-hand-drive cars.

From then on many countries changed out of necessity.

Today, the EC would like Britain to fall into line with the rest of Europe, but this is no longer possible. It would cost billions of pounds to change everything round.
The last European country to convert to driving on the right was Sweden in 1967. While everyone was getting used to the new system, they paid more attention and took more care, resulting in a reduction of the number of road accident casualties.

Ok... The thing about Napoleon being left handed just didn't sit well with me. I mean by the time he was able to dictate change, he wasn't actually defending himself anyway. It had to be more complex than that. But, I think it is interesting that the megalomaniac/demonic idea of Napoleon still drives (pardon the pun) this explanation.

This explanation makes much more sense to me. I cut off the first part about Roamn and medieval times as it was already discussed in the other article.

The General Highways Act of 1773 did not apply the keep-left rule to England. The custom was already established. In the 18th century stage coaches left London form most parts of the country but their precise routes were quite flexible. Drivers simply chose the firmest ground and it was not uncommon for roads to be 100 yards wide. As landowners enclosed more and more fields, they narrowed the roads dramatically and increased the importance of agreeing on which side to pass to avoid accidents. Contemporary prints show that the custom was for stage coaches to keep to the left. This evidence must be treated with some respect because not every lithographer knew how to reverse images for printing.

The keep-left rule did not become law in Britain until 1835, although local regulations existed. The Highways Bill was introduced in four successive sessions of parliament before finally becoming law. As ever, the press could be relied upon to keep its finger on the pulse of the nation (and its elbow on the bar of the four-ale saloon). One journalist reported: " A vast number of clauses, which extended to 113, were agreed to, but from the rapid manner and the low tone in which they were discussed across the table it was quite impossible to collect the nature of the objections... the house remained in committee nearly the whole night."

Meanwhile the French Revolution was setting off on a dramatically different course. Keeping left had only ever applied to driving or riding. People on foot kept to the right-hand side of the road and faced the oncoming traffic, a custom which persists today in Britain on country lanes without pavements. Indeed until the 1920s, horses were led on the right in Britain, on the principle that it was safer for those on foot to be able to see fast-approaching traffic (and if necessary take avoiding action) than to be run over from behind.

There was an obvious class distinction in France between the left- and right-hand sides of the roads. The aristocrats drove in their carriages up the left hand side of the road, forcing the citizens over onto the right. Come the revolution in 1789, and the declaration of the "rights of man" in 1791, the aristocrats had a natural incentive to keep to the poor side of the road, to avoid drawing attention to themselves and a quick trip to la lanterne, the street lamps that made such handy gibbets. Robespierre codified the change and ordered that traffic in Paris should keep to the right. Robespierre was guillotined (without trial) on 10 Thermidor, in the second year of the revolutionary calendar (28 July 1794) but there is no record of whether his tumbril kept to the right or not. Napoleon established the change more firmly by ordering his military traffic to take the right side of the road.

The revolutionary wars and Napoleon's subsequent conquests spread the new rightism to the Low Countries, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain. The states that had resisted Napoleon kept broadly left - Britain, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Russia and Portugal. Of these independent states, only Denmark converted to driving on the right (in 1793). This European division, between the left- and right-hand nations remained fixed for more than 100 years, until after the First World War.

Meanwhile, the habit of driving on the left spread to the United States. The link in the chain was General Lafayette, the French liberal reformer, who visited the US on several occasions and gave military help during the War of Independence. The first keep-right law in the US, passed in 1792, applied to the Pennsylvania turnpike, between Lancaster and Philadelphia. New York (in 1804) and New Jersey (in 1813) also enacted keep-right rules. However, Canada, which was still ruled by Britain, stayed mostly on the left-hand side of the road until 1920s.

Britain's imperial expansion spread the keep-left rule over every continent, so that the sun never set on the left-hand side of the road. The Indian Empire, Australasia and the African colonies all adopted the keep-left rule-with the exception of Egypt. Egypt had been conquered by Napoleon before becoming a British dependency, and its traffic kept to the right.

Even Japan fell under British influence. In the 1850's British and American gunboat diplomacy forced the Japanese to open their ports to foreign traders. In 1859, Queen Victoria's man at the Japanese court, Sir Rutherford Alcock, persuaded the Japanese to impose a keep-left rule. In China the opium wars, and the consequent influence in Shanghai, also helped to form the Chinese decision to keep on the left. Most other European colonies followed the practise of their colonising power. Indonesia, for example, continues to follow the old Dutch habit of driving on the left, even thought the Netherlands switched to driving on the right after the establishment of the puppet Batavian Republic in 1795.

Although Russia switched to driving on the right in the last days of the Tsars, most countries stuck to their traditional sides of the road, even after the First World War. The break up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire caused no change; Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Hungary continued to drive on the left. Portugal changed to the right in the 1920s.

Hard to tell. You can still see some hair sticking out on his right side under the ballcap. Not too many guys would cut their hair before they go fishing with their buddies, I think. And I bet they won't shave, either.

I have to say I like the half-ponytail he's been trying out. It accentuates his superb cheekbones, which are one of his best features. And it's better than the full ponytail he wore when he was 16 or so. But I still think the best style for him is the short haircut he has in my avatar.

OCTOBER 22, 2004: Lleyton Hewitt is seen holidaying at nightclub in Darwin, 22/10/04 evidently after news of his breakup with finacee Clijsters.

lleyki4eva
10-25-2004, 03:20 PM
i'm so confused, lleyton is reported so devastated, angry, embarassed, etc; but he didn't look sad in these pics :) esp the first and second ones and he was
drinking mostly bottled water, he stayed at the nightclub until 3.30am and was seen laughing and chatting to friends and other patrons.

When approached by The Sunday Mail, Hewitt was calm and polite but would not comment on the break-up.

he looked OK, didn't he? I think the reports don't match with each other

Socket
10-25-2004, 03:37 PM
I'm actually glad that his friends are making sure that he's not staying in his hotel room and moping around feeling sorry for himself. It's good that he's getting out and being seen, and being calm and polite to the press. The last thing he needs to do is been photographed looking sad or depressed; it'll just feed the media frenzy.

jule
10-25-2004, 04:25 PM
i don't think that he is looking happy at all but i also don'T think that he is looking very sad, depressed, whatever.
i just think that he is looking very calm as if he accepted that the relationship is over. i think you just can't be happy after such a long relationship, it's very difficult that the other person is suddenly out of your life!

Bibi
10-25-2004, 05:48 PM
Well, I think the best he can do, is get the whole breaking up out of his mind. It won't help him if he keeps thinking about it. Surely it must hurt like hell, but he has enough time to think about it (even when he's at a night club, doesn't mean he isn't thinking about it).

I think it's also good from his friends to take him out. It's not like he's doing something he shouldn't is it - I mean, he isn't filling himself with bottles of alcohol or trashing the place. He's just trying to relax.

Haven't you heard about it, that's his sister that disappeared some years ago, and now she showed up all of a sudden (I'm sure the journalists will make a great story about it soon) :o

Yah,there seems a lot of suprising things happening in Lley's life recently. :p
And the journalists will be so happy that they have chance to show their creativity on Lley recently.

It is an error. Lauren Hewitt is ane australian athlete. She was born at Warracknabeal in 1978. She can't be the sister of Lleyton. I read her biography, that corresponds in no way.

I've got no idea.... Maybe they had them all there and let the guys pick. Andy is the only one with the blue one.... I dont think they were assigned.

I've had a good look at Lleyton's shoes :o and those were also sport shoes, I think (not like Andy's with white) => but I'm pretty sure, those weren't the fancy shoes that go with the suit (or someone didn't polish them to well, if you look at the other guys, they all have shiny shoes  )

Well, the matches I saw, Lleyton always started with the green shirt, and then after the first set he changes shirts. Sometimes the blue one, but yesterday (in the semi- it was another green one).

Sixers sink Tigers

28nov04
LLEYTON Hewitt and Andrew McLeod may have been sitting on Adelaide's bench last night but it was the 36ers' own dynamic duo of Brett Maher and Willie Farley who sank Melbourne.

The Distinctive Homes Dome was rocking as Dusty Rychart was another to play a blinder as Adelaide reversed a 17-point NBL road loss to the Tigers eight days earlier with a 119-107 win.

Rychart finished with 27 points, 16 rebounds and four assists while David Cooper and Paul Rees ran Mark Bradtke ragged around the court.

Bradtke still had a big impact to finish with 21 points and 19 rebounds but he had 14 boards by half-time and there is no doubt his dominance waned.

Farley had 26 points and seven assists and backcourt running mate Maher confirmed the changing of the guard with 19 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals.

In contrast, Melbourne's Lanard Copeland struggled to get going and it was Dave Thomas and Andrew Gaze who carried the Tigers when Adelaide threatened to blow the game apart.

Adelaide had slipped behind by as many as 11 points early in the second quarter as Bradtke continued to dominate the keyway, his basket with 10:10 to half-time making it 42-31 for the Tigers.

The 36ers responded behind skipper Maher who stuck a drive and jumpshot.

Then he risked injury by throwing himself in the middle of a Tigers fast break, pulling off an exceptionally gutsy steal that Cooper completed with a three-point play.

When Cooper tipped in an aggressive Farley miss, the 36ers were almost all the way back and had the crowd behind them.

Rychart's hookshot made it 40-41 but Darryl McDonald ended the 9-0 rally with a play showcasing vintage brilliance.

First, his anticipation allowed him to steal a ball at Adelaide's endline. Then he took it the length of the floor and scored a fabulous basket under pressure.

Oscar Forman trimmed it back to a basket before Copeland stuck an uncontested three-pointer for 47-42 to Melbourne.

Maher to Rychart followed by a Forman three tied it 4:42 from half-time.

But at 49-49, Rychart pushed Adelaide ahead from the free throw line, missed his second but Forman grabbed the rebound.

The ball back with Rychart, he was fouled by Thomas for two more free throws and the 36ers' momentum was building.

Upset by the officiating after a Gaze turnover, the Tigers were still moaning as Maher stuck a monster three from the top of the key.

Unsettled, Melbourne watched in bemusement as Gaze uncharacteristically missed two free throws.

Luckily for the Tigers, Thomas was there for the tip but baskets to Jacob Holmes and Farley had Adelaide's lead out to 61-53 before McDonald trimmed it from the stripe.

Adelaide 119 (Rychart 27, Farley 26, Maher 19, Forman 14) d Melbourne 107 (Bradtke, Gaze 21, Thomas 20, Hoare 14).
