Chloe le Bopper

Oh yes, that forehand, that is why I started liking him too

In truth, I like clay court tennis, and even though he can play on other surfaces he shines on clay - I liked how he was so scrambley and fast :)

2001 because that's the year I started watching tennis again. I used to be an avid fan of Ivan Lendl when I was little, then for a while I only watched tennis sporadically, mostly when Ivanisevic played. But in 2001 tennis made a big comeback in my life and I took to Juanqui immediately. He was ferocious in that year, but also incredibly sweet and shy off-court. He's been my favorite ever since and noone else comes even remotely close (not even Lendl ;)).

I <3 Roland Garros and the clay court season in general. Hence the extra pain when ESPN ruined it this year

There's even a clay challenger in my home state, but I've never been home to see it!

For the latter half of 2000 he was just a curiosity for me, but towards the end (us open and on) I rooted for him most of all ;)

I remembering being a little bummed he ended at 11 and not at 10 :( Damn Tim :p

A long time ago, i heard about Ferrero many times but i don't take care about him because i don't really like tennis. But after my brother told me that he is really love tennis, i try to know about tennis. The first time i watch tennis match is at Roland Garros this year between Ferrero and Costa. After that, I've become Ferrero's fan.

first saw him play in last year's tmc...in his match against hewitt...it was great comeback for him, especially since he lost the first two sets but managed to take the next two...i really liked how the way he treats the ball kids, he never just throw his towel at them or snatches it abruptly like other players do...i guess this says something about his personality...and from then on, i always looked forward to his games

Bored!!!

So I took a trip down memory lane and decided to bump this thread. :)

I remember the match when I became a fan.
2001 Roland Garros Quarter-Final against Lleyton Hewitt. He won the match by cracking a HUGE forehand return down the line.
But it wasn't until 2002 that I became a big fan.

Jimnik
05-03-2006, 12:09 AM
Oh yes, that forehand, that is why I started liking him too Don't remember when but it was because of that FER-OCIOUS FOREHAND!!!
It's fascinating to read some of these old posts. This is proof that JC use to have a MASSIVE forehand. But now, his forehand is almost a liability, sometimes.
2001 because that's the year I started watching tennis again. I used to be an avid fan of Ivan Lendl when I was little, then for a while I only watched tennis sporadically, mostly when Ivanisevic played. I had sort of given up on tennis for a while but I started watching again in 2001. This was mainly due to the arrivals of JC and Andy Roddick, whom I both saw for the first time at Roland Garros that year.

I first became a fan when Federer was my favourite player. I saw him play in the semi-finals of the 2004 australian open against Federer. I used to always cheer for Federer, but for some reason I cheered against Federer for this guy who I've never even heard of before. It didn't even matter to me that Ferrero lost, from that moment I really liked him, but I suppose I wasn't really that obsessed with him until 2004 Wimbledon because I stayed up till 3am just to see his results on TV, they didn't even bring him. Then I started following his career more closely

good thread :yeah:

i only used to ever watch wimbledon until about 2002 when i started watching a bit more and it was during RG that year that i noticed and started supporting JCF. he had a good run to the final that year and then won it the next year :D

Puschkin
05-04-2006, 06:50 PM
At the French Open 2003. Well, that sounds like the classical bandwaggon-jumper. But there was a little bit more than that. The way he behaved after having won (that famous look towards the sky) made me immediately understand how much it meant to him.

This was a lesson right there to grasp. If you work hard and are persistent you can live your dream. JCF's tennis lacks Roger's elegance, Marat's power or Nadal's force. But he won a GS tourney with the means available to him, and this made me like the guy.

Besides, it is a question of credibility, not to quit when things turn sour.

In 2000,I was a fan of Safin and Norman, but I was not a dedicated fan until I liked Ferrero. The day of 2000 Roland Garros Semifinal,I supposed the TV should broadcast Norman's match, but to my disappointment,it was Kuerten with Ferrero who I never heard his name before.I still decided to watch, and I found the guy who's looked like Solskjaer(a player of Man Utd)was charming, with his handsome face, bonny figure and magnificent forehand and backhand. At that time,I liked Beckham so much,so just had some good impression of Ferrero untill 2001 clay season,he played so good, sports news almost every day reported news like that"Ferrero continues his victory matches to XX. "With Roland Garros coming,I can't help concentrating on him more or less. The R4 was him against Enqvist,I waited just a result untill 1 am,at that moment,I became a big fan of him.

Just realised I haven't posted on this thread yet. :)

I first watched Juanqui play in the match in my avatar---the Masters Cup round robin match with Goran in YEC Sydney 2001.
I was a big Goran fan from 1994 (I still am), so naturally I was rooting for Goran. I knew Ferrero was one of top youngsters, but didn't know much else. Also, I have to confess that at that time I was one of those Wimbledon fanatics; I had this very biased idea about Spanish players and those excel on clay, although I had hardly watched any match on clay at that point. (Yes, now I'm ashamed of myself back then. :o)
BUT that day I was pleasantly surprised that JC was playing extremely well on an indoor court, and I enormously enjoyed the match although Goran lost in two tie break sets. Actually, this was the first time I didn't feel that crap that Goran lost, partly because Goran was clearly enjoying the match and also because JC played fantastically, and he was so cute! It was a top-notch eye candy match I tell you! :)
From that day, JC became my top favourite young player (I was of course loyal to Goran, too ;)) and I started following JC's career. Very soon he became my top guy along Goran, and I learned how exciting clay court tennis can be.
So I'm very grateful to JC for opening the door for me for this whole new world of
clay court tennis, which I now love very much. But for him, I would still have been one of those prejudiced, ignorant people who think fast court tennis is the best and clay is boring without watching it properly. The point is that Juanqui can play on all surfaces, and that's why he colud convert me.
That's why this Sydney match means so much to me. :)

Hi everyone!
I became a fan when I saw the highlights of his match against Agassi from their 2003 US Open match. Back then, I didn't really know much about tennis but I had heard of Agassi (and I thought he was invincible). So when I heard that someone had beaten him, I was really surprised:rolls:. Hi Jamjar. That Ferrero-Agassi US Open SF in 2003 was incredible wasn't it. I was lucky to enough to watch that match live. JCF was in stunning form that day, and he had to be to see off Agassi who himself was playing so well and was absolutely formidable on hardcourts.
Yes Agassi lobbed him and then he hit that awesome passing shot through the legs. In my opinion that is the 2nd best performance from JCF that I ever seen, and he secured the world no. 1 ranking after that victory as well :).

Didn't he secure his number one ranking after beating Massu in the Madrid final. I know it was on September 8 2003, but I thought it was in Madrid.

It was definately the Agassi victory at New York that secured the no. 1 ranking for him.
September 8 was the day after the US Open finished, and going into the final against Roddick, it was already comfirmed that he would take top spot the next day, regardless of whether he won or lost.
The Madrid Masters in 2003 was held from October 13-19.

Davis Cup against Russia in Malaga 2000!!!

I just recall this wondrous instant:
You have arrived before my face --
A vision, fleeting in a distance,
A spirit of the pure grace.

yes, Juanqui beat the then No 1 to become the new No 1! it was so exciting!!!! just a shame he lost to Pandy but I don't think he was thought of as the USO finalist back then! he really exceeded expectations there! but the rain delays didn't help as he had to play at least 3-4 days back-to-back while the schedule favoured both AA and Pandy... I was so mad at the time... but 2003 was Juanqui's best year -- no wonder he was exhausted by Dec. DC final v. Australia... and then he got the chicken pox...

He reached No. 1 in the race with the victory in Madrid, thereby becoming the undisputed No. 1 in both entry ranking and the race. :) He was No.1 in the race immediately after winning RG, too, but it's definitely a greater achievement to reach the top spot in the both tables at the same time.
Also, it was at the Madrid Masters that he received the chrystal shield for No. 1 player in the entry ranking. :) It usually takes a few weeks after reaching No. 1.

As everyone said, that USO semifinal 2003 was the best match JC played outside clay. He was just breathtaking that day. :worship:

I'm not a proper fan, but I like him. I just saw this thread and it reminded me of this:

I knew I liked the guy when I saw this photo for the first time

I started liking Juan Carlos Ferrero when I saw him in the 2009 Davis Cup semifinal. I became interested in the man named after the King of Spain, and wanted to learn more about him. He is a nice guy and a great player. The pictures of him look very sweet.

I would love to get a tape of one of Juanqui's greatest matches. I saw him play at Acapulco against countryman David Ferrer and enjoyed seeing that match very much. I like both men because they are both very nice and always very excited to represent their country wherever they go. I like Juanqui's quiet reserve, which has been misrepresented as lack of excitement. Not everyone preens and struts, an attitude I can't stand. I think people can have an inner pride in their accomplishments without always puffing themselves up.

We've got some videos:

I've also got recordings of some of his best Wimbledon victories but I don't know how to upload them. I got them from the official website (I had to pay for them) so I think there's a rights issue.

Hi :)
Nice avatar ! Yes it was a great match, and 2001 was the year when I got interested in tennis, so most of players that I like, were the ones that I've noticed in 2001 :)
Goran is idol of many players and still big star in Split, although he doesn't live here any more.
I was lucky enough to finally see JCF match live in Umag, also saw him in players restaurant and took picture with him, such a nice guy :)

Sorry for off topic

I'm with you there Edda - I have always admired JC and David together for those qualities as much as their tennis talent and have also regretted that both have rather been in Carlos Moya's, and latterly Rafa's shadow (both of those 2 also nice guys BTW). I can't give any particular "wow this guy is good" moment though...:wavey:

After the Roland Garros SF in 2000 against Kuerten. That was one of the best matches I have ever seen, and I've seen a few.

I wish the Tennis Channel would show classic matches of Juanqui's, along with an episode of Tennisography about Juanqui. His story is one of the most incredible in all of tennis. I hope someday somebody writes Juanqui's life story. I'd love to read it.

I saw a lot of great information about Juanqui's childhood and career development on a site called Juanqui.net. His story is truly touching and should serve as an inspiration to anyone who wants to excel in tennis or any other field. It tells the story of not only Juan Carlos the tennis player, but also "Juanqui," a much-loved member of his family.
