on a side note, it would be cool if we made funky thread headliners per tournament Andy plays in

LOL I like that idea (the fun headlines for each tournament)

I hope Andy does well.... if he could win and beat a couple of people he's had problems with too (such as Rainer or Tim) that would be extra good. He could really use those rankings points and he has to do well to take any ground at all.

Younes will be the favorite for sure, and he's won before, so I'd look for him to be playing well. I wonder what the tennis atmosphere in a place like Qatar is - the Middle East isn't really known for it's long tennis legacy that I know of lol.

As a semi-aside, are our troops still staioned out of Doha? Would be nice to see some interaction there if so. Him visiting with troops/CentCom would be a nice headline and a nice gesture.

I'm guessing this tournament isn't going to be televised anywhere in North America?

Bunk, yes, I would love to see Andy (and any of the other players) visit with the soldiers if they are stationed there. That would be cool!

CentCom WAS in Doha, when Tommy Franks was leading the operations. I haven't heard much about it really in a while though. They used to have daily press conferences, etc, but I'm not sure. I found an article that said they returned to Doha in November, but nothing more recent. Anyway, if so, it'd be nice :)

Anyway no, not even on TTC. Only Eurosport in the whole world (except maybe something local in morocco for Younes or locally in Qatar or something) is showing it that I know of :(

Oh yeah. We can have a lot of fun. :)

I didn't know that the U.S. had any troops in Doha at any time.

Me. I just want to see him with some great horses.

And you know everyone should see Seabiscuit. And LOTR was great because of the horses. If the film is going to have horses, I'm going to see it. Can't wait for Hildalgo. :)

I'm not sure if there were troops but it's where CentralCommand (CentCom) was. Not sure if it's still there or not - and obviously things have changed since Nov. I'm sure some presence is still there but I don't know if operations are still being run out of Doha.

Horses work too LOL! but *hides* my mom and I didn't really like Seabiscuit that much... it was tooooooo longgggg

But anyway.... common Andy, show us your new guns and 6-pack and knock 'em dead! :armed:

Not liking Seabiscuit just shows that horses aren't the most important things in movies to you and your mom. :)

I loved that movie. I liked that it was so slow. And I loved the music. It was elegaic........ if that is a word. Horses and music. Either one. Veronic Guerin wasn't such a good movie, but I loved the music.

OK...

most important? well no lol but my mom grew up with a dad who had season tickets to Saratoga Springs and she likes horse racing a whole lot. Really it was just too long. If it'd been a half hour or 45 min shorter I'm sure we'd have liked it a lot more.

But anyway... there are a lot of people playing Doha that Andy had trouble with in 2003... who do you guys want to see him meet and beat?

Did she like the parts filmed at Saratoga?

I'm usually a big complainer about movies being too long, but I didn't mind that one. It must have been a combination of the horses and the music. :)

Deboogle!.
01-01-2004, 11:16 PM
lol that's ok... since I was talking about people he had trouble with in 2003 ;) like Rainer, Massu, Henman... i'd like to see him get right out there and beat any/all of those guys just to boost his confidence at the start of the year :)

and yeah star, my mom did like those parts! :)

this could be a tough tourney to follow. The site doesn't seem any too quick to put stuff up and it doesn't look promising for live scores.

Shouldn't the qualies start tomorrow, but there's no draw/schedule for them????

J. Corwin
01-02-2004, 08:49 PM
Well the qualies draw is up.

And the site gives you results...no live scores I think. We always have other sites to do that for us though.

yea I saw... ATP just hasn't changed over the main links from 2003 lol

livescore.com is ok but they can be painfully slow sometimes LOL!! Though it probably won't matter too much since with the time differences the matches will probably mostly happen overnight for most of us LOL

pretty top heavy if you ask me, and where's Coria:tape: Andy should have no problem getting to the quarters/semis. he might run into trouble with Mark/Younes. i suspect younes because Mark is way too much do or die with his serves. its not a bad tournament draw, and it isnt a really important tournament, more of a stepping stone before the big one AO

star
01-03-2004, 05:31 PM
Yeah. Where is Coria? Maybe he withdrew? I know he's going to Aukland the following week.

Deboogle!.
01-03-2004, 05:59 PM
I'd say the draw looks pretty good for Andy... Henman AND Schuettler in the other half, thank goodness.

edit: just noticed Massu in the other half too. :yipee: AND Sargisian for good measure lol and Ljubicic so we can hopefully avoid a rematch of that.

so yeah, I still maintain good draw for andy.....could've been a LOT worse.

J. Corwin
01-03-2004, 10:29 PM
It's a good draw, I agree.

Potential baddies so far that I see: Mark, Younes...and in the other half, Massu, Ivan, Tim, Michel, Rainer.

Deboogle!.
01-03-2004, 10:32 PM
well the good thing about the other half is that he'd only have to face one of them, and in the final LOL!!!!!!!!!

Mark could be a problem... but who knows if he's even at 100%. And Younes.... well we don't really have to remind everyone of that LOL!

Arazi could also potentially be a problem because he's sort of playing on 'home turf' if you will.

but yea.... could've been a LOT worse

oops I wasn't saying it as a joke :( lol

I mean it's the same culture, they (Arazi and Younes) should get relaly good fan support I would assume, which one would expect to help them, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Arazi be able to make it to the QF.

Deboogle!.

yea and his 5th best right now for the Entry System anyway is a Final worth 24 points and a SF at Doha is worth only 22 (Easier to talk in terms of CR points just x 5).... so yea he has to get to the final to get anything lol

Why is Andy playing doubles with Koubeck??? LOL!!!

They play Arazi/El-Aynaoui first round. that should be fun.

star
01-04-2004, 05:07 PM
Maybe he likes Koubek's outfits. :)

But really, why is that so laughable?

Deboogle!.
01-04-2004, 05:15 PM
I dunno, it just seems random, if he were playing with Gambill or someone I wouldn't be laughing. Plus Brad said he wasn't really gonna play doubles anymore since the results were so bad. Just a little surprised that's all. I think doubles are good for him though, get him up at the net.

star
01-04-2004, 05:22 PM
Is Gambill playing doubles?

I think that these guys who aren't completely serious about doubles just sign up at the tournaments. There's a sign up sheet for people looking for a partner. Plus, I like it for Andy to be with the European guys. It's more of a stretch for him that it is just sticking always to Americans. It's sort of like being in a foreign country. If you hang out with Americans all the time, you aren't going to really get to know what the country is like.

Plus, Koubek is a fun guy. :)

Deboogle!.
01-04-2004, 05:24 PM
oh yea I know... it was just one of those things, I saw it, I giggled for a sec and now I'm over it LMAO As long as it helps the singles and doesn't take away I think it's great. Should be a fun match against Arazi/El-Aynaoui too. Lots of big personalities on the court at one time LOL!!!!!

Gambill is playing dubs with Parrott?

both teams got the two WC entries

Havok
01-04-2004, 05:31 PM
bunk i think Brad said Andy was on a semi-retirement for doubles for the end of 2003. it's pretty obvious why he';s playing doubles here, because it's the 1st tournament back. you want as much match practice as possible. and was Koubek in the juniors with Andy? i got no idea how old he is, but i've heard of him name, and Andy says he's friends with quite a few guys who played in the juniors with him

star
01-04-2004, 05:32 PM

Deboogle!.
01-04-2004, 05:35 PM

I guess I misinterpreted Brad's comments. Like I said, I agree that doubles is good practice.

He just turned 27, a couple days ago it appears

star
01-04-2004, 05:37 PM
Koubek was born in January 2, 1977.

Happy Birthday Stefan!!! :)

So he's five years older than Andy. Unlikely that they knew each other in the juniors. Koubek turned pro in 1994.

Deboogle!.
01-04-2004, 05:39 PM
they play tomorrow - the doubles match is scheduled last (of 4 matches) on centre court - play starts at 4pm local time. Arazi has to play his singles match with just one in between before the doubles. Carraz is scheduled the same way. that's so crappy lol

01-04-2004, 05:40 PM
ah i see. now i know who Koubek is, since bunk said he won this event last year. now i know what he looks like, i've seen his pic on the official atp website;) well i hope they do good in doubles, doubles is fun, especially when its the top singles players playing

Really? Well, that's Koubek's ONE title then. :)

Doha is 8 hours ahead of Eastern US time.... so 4pm Doha time is 8am Eastern and therefore 6am in Utah? Andy's the last match though of 4, so his doubles will be later than that.

Fair point, and I do it myself frequently, but this is usually because Roddick will play someone I support in the later rounds so I want to try and get him out earlier - it's the same for all top players really, except the ones I like (Duh!). I always root for some people to win and others to lose, so that my grand scheme for the tournament can work out all right - with variable results, naturally.

I think TBE was supporting Davydenko, given the Russian connection, but you never know - maybe croat is fearful of a potential Roddick-Ljubicic final?

well yeah its only normal for people to want certain people to lose. YOUR reason is good because obviously you wouldn't want one of your faves to face Roddick later on, as i don't want Roddick to meet up with a select few as well. but if it's just one dude i dont like playing a dude i couldn't care less about, i would just cheer on the dude i want to win, and not the other way around. but such is life, and haters will alwasy and forever be haters. they live their lives full of hatred and not me, so im fine:banana:

Andy, dont need to say much besides his name, and Jonas an excellent serve/volley player:eek: s/v players are kinda tough to play right off the bat though, when you're totally out of sync with your shots being as its the begining of the season, but good for Jonas. now watch koubek defend his title:haha:
oh and good luck Roddick/Koubek, going far in doubles will help

01-07-2004, 01:57 PM
Yea true.... at least, I assume that as the scoreboard was speed updating it was doing it correctly. Though it seems odd to break at love then hold at love and then break at love again... but hey anything is possible. From my count there were, let me see... Jonas broke 3 times and Andy 2.... wow.

Can't get too upset b/c this is what Andy did last year, except that Jonas is a much better player than Lee, and the conditions weren't bad like last year and Andy wasn't defending his #1.... oh well just gotta hope for the best in the big one.

bunk its an exhibition tournament. wether he wins it or loses, don't look too much into it anyways:o
he'll be looking to get his rythm and game more well rounded before the Australian Open, not to be winning an exhibition tournament. but it would still be good to have decent results while he's there:lol:

Deboogle!.
01-07-2004, 02:21 PM
oh oh I know..... but it's a chance for him to see top players... if he has so much trouble with Bjorkman (not that he's not good, by any means), how will he do against a fresh Agassi and Federer and Dent, etc. it's just a better chance than this was to see more the type of people he has to beat to win AO, if I'm making sense. Exhibition or not, these guys look at Kooyong as a real preparation for AO, so they're not going to be playing at 60% like a normal exho I wouldn't think.

well after reading those 2-3 articles on the match, and Bjorkman also stating that he hit many more errors than he usually does, it was more of Andy losing it than Bjorkman winning it. plus the wind, and the sand on the court, Roddick not running for shots he thought woulda been easy putaways from Jonas, etc. sounds like Andy didn't really care for this tournament and i doubt he woulda really pushed to win this event, he'll take it nice and easy before the Australian Open. and yes Mr.Man the AO is his next officialt atp tournament, but he plays that Kooyong exho this following week

MisterQ
01-07-2004, 05:30 PM
Sounds like the wind was troubling Andy, throwing off his timing and not allowing him to hit with as much power.

All credit to Jonas, though, for knowing how to handle the windy conditions and use his strengths to pull out the win!

Naldo isn't that the concept you and other fans argued against when Federer was up and made a bunch of errors and doubles faults in the Montreal match? Jonas had to handle the wind as well. I always thought this was a indoor event anyway. Kooyong is the one exhibition that I think is treated like a real event by the players. Andre always seems to see it that way. This isn't a bad loss, Jonas is a very experienced player and much more capable of dealing with tough conditions. I hope he goes on to win the event. Be nice to see him and Moya win titles this week.

Sjengster
01-07-2004, 06:49 PM
Be much nicer to see Henman and Schalken win titles this week though...

This whole concept of someone losing a match rather than the other player winning it is usually ridiculous, except in rare cases such as Coria's inexplicable collapse against Roddick at the Masters Cup (I know Roddick fought hard, but all of a sudden Coria couldn't keep the ball in court from 3-1 up). I seem to recall Naldo saying after Henman's win over Roddick in Paris that Roddick seemed to lose the match rather than Henman win it, which I think is a little unfair. After all, errors are in many cases caused by the game style of the opponent, so they have to be given credit for coming up with the goods.

Dirk
01-07-2004, 06:53 PM
I agree Sjengster only in rare cases. Jana in Wimbly 93 final!!!!!! Now Andy's loss to Timmy in Mason DC was a gift. That tiebreaker wasn't even close. All Andy did was make unforced errors. The breakers in Paris were much closer. That wasn't a bad loss at all. The is the best way to lose, in a tight tiebreaker. Moya and Jonas. :p for Sjengster.

Havok
01-07-2004, 06:59 PM
no sjengster i don't think i said Roddick lost the henman match at Paris other than henman winning it. i think i said Andy didn't play as well, but henman deserved the win. and Dirk, i'm just going by the articles about the matchand what Jonas said about the match as well. we have yet to hear comments from Andy because he still has to play his doubles match. had i seen the match on tv, i would be able to grasp it better! but it still goes down as a win, and Jonas lead in both sets, it's not like Andy gave away a lead or anything like that, but when you read in articles that he made some very uncarachteristic mistakes, not running for some shots, and Jonas himself says Andy hit way too many errors as he normaly does, i think my concept is pretty good if you ask me. and don't try to turn this into the stupid Montreal match again. totally different circumtances(date of the events, surface, opponents, etc.)

Well, with Andy now moving on to AO, I'm now keeping my fingers crossed for Tim Henman to take Doha. What a coup that would be! It would give him even more confidence and hopefully he'll be able to carry that with him to Wimbledon.

It's funny, I've never really been a Tim fan but over the months, my sympathy and respect for him has been growing to the point where I would like to see him win at least one GS. Andy has time on his side but Tim doesn't.

Havok
01-07-2004, 07:01 PM
or maybe i shoulda rephrased it as Andy aided Jonas to win the match, because it wasn't only Andy handing over the win to Bjorkman, because he was playing the wind well

Deboogle!.
01-07-2004, 07:02 PM
Dirk, I argued against the concept of a player losing matches. And I stand by that. Obviously it sounds like Andy didn't play his best and both of them said Andy hit a lot of errors. But from the articles I read it sounded like Jonas has him figured out, enough so that with Andy making errors he could win. So I definitely credit Jonas. I stand by my statements - I'm no hypocrite :) So give Naldo a break, I don't think it was him that said this, I think it was only me.

Andy had weather problems in Sydney last year, had a bad loss to Lee, and ended up doing JUST FINE at AO, so I'm not worried, and as many said, Jonas is a good player so yeah. Andy just better get himself worked out in Kooyong against good players and it'll be all good :)

Here are some quotes from Andy, it's all that I've seen published thusfar (probably b/c his press conference was confused by the dubs match)
----

"I'm always going to have off days," he reckoned.

"I am playing against the best in the world on a daily basis, so it's going to happen. He played well and I was far from my best.

"There was a change in the conditions. There was a kind of a haze and I couldn't figure it out. I wasn't seeing it well. It was just one of those days.

"I was glad to get straight into some doubles here. I also have some matches in Kooyong, so I should have enough before the Australian Open."

LMFAO!!!!!!!!

Andy doesn't sound too upset about it. He knows what happened last year and hopefully he's confident enough in himself. Plus if you look at some of these pre-AO beginning of the season tourneys, they're often won by unexpecteds - wildcards, lower-ranked people, people coming back from injuries, etc... I dunno, it just seems like a trend lol and then the top people can put it together for the AO. it's like they're really just using the tourneys to warm up.

In fact, I didn't WANT Andy to win Doha to be honest. As someone said in an article about Hewitt, you want to reach peak AT the AO, not before it... so it'll all end up ok.... hopefully, LOL

'Tis a good point, I think the only AO champion in recent memory to win an early season warm-up tournament was Korda back in 1998. Of course, if you do what Hewitt foolishly did in 2000 and not only play both Adelaide and Sydney but win them both as well, you're obviously not going to be fully fresh going into the event that matters the most.

LMFAO Naldo that was a good one. Andy doesn't consider himself a good dubs player, I don't think. I agree MisterQ, I was really bummed out that only TTC showed the TMC doubles b/c it always sounded like they were better matches than the singles by far lol. I love watching dubs though, I love when they have those cool volley exchanges at the net hehe

but i must admit i would much rather watch doubles played by the women since pretty much all the top women also play doubles and are good at it. you can't say that about the mens side. but i wouldn't mind watching a doubles match with Andy in it:rocker2: and the bryans are also fun:yeah:

I always hated doubles and avoided any doubles match, no matter how good the players were.

Then the Bryan Brothers showed up. They're the only ones I'll watch now. (I've never seen Andy play doubles; that would be interesting). :bounce:

I'd love to seee Andy play dubs, esp. with Mardy. I think those two probably have a blast

according to livescore, the Henman match (which is right before the dubs final) was suspended... so, guess we'll have to wait to find out what happens!

Hi folks, yeah it was suspended due to rain! Looks like Tim brought a bit of England to Qatar ;)

They have just come back on court though and Ljubicic is serving at 7-6 0-1.

It's very interesting that Doha ends on Saturday and not Sunday like most tournaments. I wonder why. No wonder everything seemed so compressed though!

*wonders how long it'll take to get the dubs results*

I think it is to allow the players more time to get to Australia.

lets face it, there was no way Roddick and Koubek were gonna beat Damm/Suk :haha: what a name:haha: a doubles finals appearance is very good, and this helped him sharpen his game for sure. moving right along to Kooyong now

In the future, Andy might return to ADIDAS INTERNATIONAL tourney.

Deboogle!.
01-09-2004, 09:22 PM
Yea, I wouldn't be surprised. or do what Andre does and not play any real tourneys and just stick with Kooyong or something. Though if it's really true about him going to Doha for the $$$$$$ then he might return there. Guess we'll find out :)
