Boy, do I feel sorry for Safin!

With some of the more unstable Fed fans invading our Andy space, Iím feeling like a naughty girl today. Letís bait the Safinsluts, shall we?

If Safin thinks heís got an easy comeback next year because Sampras isnít around, he better think again. Look what heís up against:

- a powerhouse Aussie with ice in his veins whoís been known to win matches that he shouldíve lost by sheer will and determination alone.

- an audacious, nervy American with a dangerous forehand and a massive serve that sends his more fragile opponents to the infirmary. Heís had the gall to nail both Pete Sampras (!) and his own best friend with that serve. No one is safe.

- a phalanx of Latino dirtballers who refuse to surrender the red clay to anybody.

- a Swiss dude thatís got even dead tennis legends creaming their pants over him for his ďartistryĒ and all-court prowess.

- a short, bald, harmless-looking geezer whoís still got game and will be more than happy to serve your ass on a silver plate if you are foolhardy enough to dismiss him as being ďpast his primeĒ.

- an underrated German rugrat who tends to sneak up and beat the best players, leaving everyone stratching their heads afterwards and wondering what just happened.

- a Frenchfroggy who refuses to get off the court and let the big boys play unhindered. Seems to take particular joy in dismanteling a certain British chump.

And these are just the top seeds Safin would have to beat a path through . . .

And for the record, yes, I realize that Safinís w-l record against many of these guys is excellent but those results were from the 2001-2002 season. These guys arenít the same amateur players they once were and Safin has been out all year with injuries. I think heíll be in for a shock when he sees how much has changed. The fact that he canít believe that Roddick is No. 1 is a sign that heís pretty much out of the loop these days.

So. Considering what Safin, Haas, and a few others making their play to come back in 2004 have to look forward to, do you think these guys stand a chance of getting back into the Top Ten?

LMFAO. Tangy, I love you

I think Mr. Safin is a little overconfident... but it's up to him to show it. If he goes out there and beats these guys, then props to him. None of these guys are scared of him, I'm sure. If he thinks he owns Andy because he beat him on two breaks of serve during Andy's first year on tour, he's got another thing comin' lol

It will be very interesting to see how Safin does. He had a long time off, and it is difficult to get back into the game. If he really applies himself, he can do it. But, I think we won't know just how good he can be in 2004. If he comes back and works hard, I think the next year will be the telling year.

With Safin the question has always been..... how much does he want it?

Maybe I'm not cutting him enough slack, but I really think this guy is overrated. He won one slam ages ago and people think he's the second coming of Christ?

Andy wins a slam and two Masters titles back-to-back and these same people think he's a hack?

Yeah. Right.

Safin crashes out with injuries all year and actually *retires* from matches --- not because he's injured but because he's LOSING. What kind of a player is that? "I'm tired, I guess I'll quit now." Pshaw! He's about as mentally strong as cheesecloth. Agassi and Fed own him. There's nothing I've seen in his game that I haven't seen others do just as well or better.

And like star says, I don't get any "I'm hungry to win and take over!" vibes from him the way I do with the others, especially Hewitt.

I almost can't wait for him to come back so I can see if he's improved his game any. I also want to see how the others stack up next to him now since he whipped quite a few of them two years ago when he was on fire.

And of course, it'll be all the more sweet to watch Andy rip him a new one.

Tangy Tangy Tangy, I love you dear, but please get the story straight. Andy got REALLY easy draws (all the tournament directors call Andy and Brad the night before the draw to find out who Andy wants in his half), he slept his way through the USTA and the whole umpire staff while he was at it, and he he always gets the lucky end of questionable line calls. And anyone else Andy hasn't screwed, Brad has paid them off. You mean you didn't you know that every time Andy hits the ball, the net automatically lowers too? OBVIOUSLY with everyone in the whole world helping him, his accomplishments aren't worth jackshit.

Marat is OBVIOUSLY better. DUH!!!

I can only suggest that stooping to the same level as the Roddick haters and trying to sneer at Safin in response is decidedly pathetic. I'm not a particular fan of Safin, but even I can tell that he deserves the plaudits that he got about being the future of the game - the US Open final of 2000 and the Davis Cup final of 2002 proved that well enough.

With some of the more unstable Fed fans invading our Andy space, Iím feeling like a naughty girl today. Letís bait the Safinsluts, shall we?

Wow, Safinsluts. That's a good one! How considerate and nice of you.

Firstly, sarcasm aside, I'd like to establish that I'm a big fan of both Marat Safin & Andy Roddick. Having said that, I'm also a newbie on this board so I have no idea what "invasion" is being spoken of, or the so called "unstableness"...

Anyway, as for Andy vs. Marat, I have to say that rank wise and whatever, Andy at the moment is better. But just because he won the US Open and he's number one in the world at the moment, it doesn't make him the best player in the world. It just means he acculumated the most points last year. As for Marat, he didn't even play in 2003, 23 matches is hardly worth comparing to somebody who was playing excellently and having a really marvellous year.

As for how these two players will do this year, well I personally think it's going to be harder for Andy to maintain his level. Marat hasn't that much to lose really, he's been doing enough of losing. Judging by his form at the Hopman Cup, he's good, but not great (at the moment). But if you look at Andy's form at Kooyong, honestly he's not that great either. So, we'll see how things unfold when the year really heats up.

Yes, in Doha Andy pretty much did, :) But I concede that he was playing pretty good tennis to come back from 1-5 down today, although he lost ultimately to David..but that still is pretty good. I suppose that if Marat Safin had been in the same situation, it would've taken a hell of a lot of luck for him to have come up with the same result as Andy, despite Andy's loss.

:wavey: Welcome Lena!!

Nice to have someone on this board who likes both Marat and Andy!! It's a rarity. :)

I think you are right that Andy is going to have a hard time to maintain his level. I'll be satisfied if he remains in the top five. It's a great bunch of players up there. Andy had a great run in the summer, but he has had difficulty since then. I was a little disappointed that he said that he let the sun annoy him yesterday. That shows some emotional difficulty. He's letting things get under his skin and irritate him. To me that shows nerves. When a player has a calm, secure mindset, these little things don't become major irritants.

I don't think Andy controlled his emotions very well under pressure yesterday. He's going to have to deal with that. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Deboogle!.
01-16-2004, 01:52 PM
really star, how could you figure that out? Was it the pics of him screaming or breaking his racket? I agree, he's gotta deal with it. But to come back from 1-5 down is great.... however does that make then being up 3-0 in the TB and then losing suck even worse? lol... just thoughts to ponder.

star
01-16-2004, 02:17 PM
The problem was that he was 1-5 down at all.

He let things get to him and that's why he was down.

He can throw his racket to hell and Sunday and that won't change things. It doesn't seem to have worked that well for Safin. :)

Deboogle!.
01-16-2004, 02:22 PM
true.... we dont know when he got mad or why he was broken twice...

I do know that before he was broken the first time in the 3rd set he'd saved all 13 BPs against him though lol

star
01-16-2004, 02:27 PM
I'd rather he wasn't in a position to be saving break points. ;)

In the interview, he said he let the sun annoy him in the third set. And apparently he was angry about other things as well.

Deboogle!.
01-16-2004, 02:34 PM
well yes, it would be better lol... but saving BPs is something he's always been good at, so I'd take it as a good sign.

yeah... sun annoying him? Isn't that what the fugly hat is for? :p

Someone said something about some bad line calls. Well, that'll do it to him. Hmm we could be optimistic and hope that he's getting out all the competitive rage out here in the exho so he's calm for the AO.

You'd think Brad would make him watch the tape of the USO SF over and over to prove to Andy how important it is to stay calm.

Nice to have someone on this board who likes both Marat and Andy!! It's a rarity.

That is a surprise, because personally I find there is a lot to like about the both of them! :D

Personally, I'm still making up my mind as to what to think of Marat.

Then I do hope, tangerine dream, that this year for Marat is a good one and you are compelled to at least make up your mind about certain things! :)

Ahh, hopefully jokes won't turn into wars this time. I like Marat and Andy, too. I think both tend to laugh at themselves at times, which make them extremely lovely. Same thing for us, certainly we can have a few laughs at players.

By the way, surely Marat has to beaware of that innocent-looking Argentine, who is lightening fast and sneaky, with great capability to stir up controversy and get away with it easily?

I hope you are right. :)

It is funny that Marat and Andy have many similarities, and yet people like one and not the other.

allusion
01-19-2004, 10:08 PM
What are the similarities?

Deboogle!.
01-19-2004, 10:14 PM
well they have big personalities.... and good senses of humor. Not sure how they are similar tennis-wise though.

allusion
01-19-2004, 10:52 PM
That's true about the sense of humour part. :)
That's why I adore both of them, they just make me happy :D
(Of course, when they're winning too)...

They both had a thing with temper and controlling it (still do, to some extent), which I guess is another similarity. But I just thought: they come from two different parts of the world, and honestly - other than the surficial things, I can't find any really solid internal similarities.

Deboogle!.
01-19-2004, 11:13 PM
I suppose it depends on why you like them. Part of the reason I like Andy is the really "All-American Boy" aspect and it'd be kinda hard for a nice Russian guy to embody that lol. But that's just why I like Andy, can't think of any other player I like for that same reason lol... I just don't know enough about Marat and haven't experienced him enough to know how I feel about him.

MisterQ
01-19-2004, 11:33 PM
Many Americans have trouble relating to the Russian sensibility and sense of humor.

I love it though!

Hello everyone! I made my reappearance after three months. Glad to find more people here.

Well, Marat and Andy both are very emotional, you see the anger, tears, frustration, happiness, which makes them human. They really touch your heart. Like when Andy won USO, I really tried hard not to cry (partly because I've been staying up all night and couldn't stop yawning).

Anyway, that's not the way others see it. They think Marat is real but Andy just fakes it for the crowd. Unfair comment, in my opinion.

star
01-20-2004, 12:22 PM
Marat does have a great sense of humor and he has a child like sense of fun as well. I see that Andy has that same sensibility, but expressed in an American way.

Marat's interviews are great reads. I try to read them always. Like Andy, he has a self deprecating sense of humor, and he likes to have fun with the journalists. He probably is a bit more mordant than is Andy just because of his Russian/European bent.

Personally, I'm not that fond of the typical all American boy. I like a little more edge. Andy is developing a fairly nice edge and I'm glad to see it. :)

Now dump the stupid trucker cap. That whole Aston Kutcher persona is .... gag.

Havok

I guess it does depend on whom, doesn't it?

Anyways, I've made my point. I'll leave this forum quietly, without a fight this time ;)

I know you guys think I'm going to come in here to gloat over Safin's loss but you'd be surprised to know that I'm feeling underwhelmed and disappointed by the whole thing right now! Yes, my Rogi won, big deal. Honestly? I don't feel that he really earned it. Safin did him a huge favor by knocking out his toughest opponents in 4- and 5-set marathons. Then comes the final and what do we get? Another boring, one-sided match. *yawn* :o

Safin flaked out right from the beginning -- not uncharacteristic of him but it was a huge digression from his earlier matches where his mind was firmly on the task at hand. But once Safin's distracted, he can't get it back. He smashed rackets all over the place (and people complain about Andy? ), keep muttering and screaming at himself, and worst of all, he was too busy entertaining the crowd! WTF? OK, it's cute and amusing but when you're LOSING--badly--it's time to stop playing the clown and start playing some tennis. What a time to goof off! I was so annoyed with him. He didn't give Fed half the game that he gave everyone else and Fed cruised to a win because of it. Blah. :ras:

Not to take anything away from Rogi. He played very well (even though it wasn't his best; he didn't have to bring his best game out tonight) but it seemed to me like he was on autopilot. Safin made it way too easy for him. Boring. Boring. Boring. :(

I hope Safin can learn to get his head together because he played so well only to run out of gas at the worst possible time. If he can remain healthy and uninjured, he and Fed will make for a very interesting rivalry. I'm curious to see what level Safin will take his game to during the rest of the year.

So congrats to Rogi for his second slam win

and congrats to Marat.....for handing it over to him :retard:

Like taking candy from baby. :baby:

Do better next time, boys. I mean it. :)

congrats to Roger. He blasted his way through his tough draw. He's now #1 with a good lead.

Marat didn't play that well at all.

Slam finals recently have been boring and one-sided. The best matches are/were always in the quarters and semis.

What is it with grand slam finals? Why are they always so disappointing?!!? When's the last time one even went to 4 sets!? Not in 2003... oh wait the 2002USO went to 4, but did anyone think Andre was really gonna win that one?

I thought it was a possibility. ;)

Andre had chances to break in that fourth set which Pete saved with some truly scary (and maybe a bit lucky?) half-volleys.

I enjoyed some of the points in the match tonight very much! But as soon as Fed won that first set, I started to feel that it was going to go downhill.

Well, I'm on call this week and this is the second time I've gotten out of bed on the same case. So.......... I said I would just stay awake until I heard back since things seem to change every 15 minutes. I'm sooooooooo happy. :)

But I do agree there were some good spots in the match and some moments of breathtaking shots, but it never became gripping. The first set had a lot of tension and that was exciting, but the tennis was spotty.

Perhaps, if I really loved either one of the players, it would have been more exciting.

Does Federer seem thinner than he has been in the past or is it just me?

Deboogle!.
02-01-2004, 03:38 PM
Federer is thin and I know someone pointed it out in GM with that picture, but his left arm really is ghastly.

What is starting to irk me.... everyone complains about how much press Andy gets and how the commentators always talk about him, etc. And it's true and it's annoying even for me as a fan, but I was almost nauseous during the match last night. All the "genius" stuff, etc..... *barfo*

but the best is that they always say oh what a genius, so smart, so elegant, and shit, and then what does Federer do? hit some f the ugliest shots i've seen. IMO genius can only be used on one person only, Martina Hingis! now she was smart, she knew exactly what shot to play, where to play it, and what spin/action to put on the ball in order to win the point. imo Roger is nowhere near the level of hingis. he is called a 'genius' because he can hit pretty much every single shot in the book, but he's not so great at using them all the time, and to his advantage ala Hingis. just my opinion:p

Q great minds like ours think alike. ;) Roger and Martina would make cute couple. You should have seen the Hopman Cup pics of them. She was all over him. Roger has said that he could go long periods of time without a gf, so if Mirka and him did split I think he recover pretty quickly. Star, you were going for Saffy in the match? :fiery:  No I am kidding. I hope you have fun at wells this year and see Roger play a lot....6 times to be exact. Hey did you ever see the whole event or do you just go for a few days? I don't know how anyone can get tickets every day with work and all.

I take vacation and go for the whole two weeks. :)

I think everyone here but Tangy was going for Safin. Go figure. We're not really tennis fans. ;)

I remember Martina and Roger at the Hopman cup. Every picture seemed to have her hand on his shoulder, his arm... but she's a very firtatious girl. I think he was involved with Mirka even then.

I have too many people to go see to see Federer. I saw him last year in a fine match -- the one with Guga. My priorities are Guga, Coria, Swedes, Andy, Lleyton, O.Rochus. JCF, Malisse, and then there will be some women I want to see as well, so it's hard for me to fit Federer in my schedule. If he gets to the final and plays someone I don't like, I probalby won't even go. I did that one year with Sampras Agassi. No sense in watching two guys I don't care about. I headed home.

sure. this Ao was the 1st time i finally got to see Safin. i got into tennis very late in 2002, he was injured 2003, so this was the 1st time i saw him play. he plays the type of tennis i like, ala Dokic:banana: so he's definitely a fave, but nowhere near the level of Andy. i won't really care about Marat's results, he just plays the brand of tennis i like. go Safin:rocker2:

that's my case 2!

Deboogle!.

I've said throughout my whole time here that I didn't dislike safin, just that I didn't know enough about him to make an opinion. Now I've seen a lot of him and I like what I see. He has a good serve, great backhand (though the motion still makes me laugh sometimes) and he definitely seems to have an outgoing and charismatic personality, both on court and off. I don't know that I see myself becoming a huge fan of his, but I'd definitely cheer for him over a lot of other players.

Safin's definition of a guy who can't play tennis: yo-yo. LOL! :haha:

"It's not like I played against a yo-yo, a guy who doesn't know how to play tennis"
-- Marat Safin with a new entry for the dictionary after losing to Roger Federer

"I have no idea how the Swiss people will react to this one"
-- Roger Federer wonders what his reward in his home country will be, after receiving a cow for winning Wimbledon

Maybe they'll give him a goat to go with that cow. :)

YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!!

The player list looks great - many of the Americans that I like and some other good players too, so I know i'll see good stuff no matter who I get to watch. Plus I heard the Bryans MIGHT be playing doubles so that could be an extra bonus!

I gotta stock up on camera batteries and film!

That was actually supposed to be in reference to Tangy.

Because Tangy called you "bunkie-boo" and so that second line "Does somebody have a softie-side-oo" was directed at tangerine_dream.

I really don't get the message across well.

Bunk, Safin is probably the funniest guy in tour in Russian, Spanish and in English. Too bad it took you so long to see him, but at least you have now seen him play.

Roger will get a years supply of chocolate from Lindt and Toblerone for winning the AO.

I re-watched the Andy-Marat match (thanks, ESPN, for wiping out the entire 3rd set :fiery: ) and I just noticed something: why did Andy leave the court with a broken racket? When did he break it? Because the racket was in one piece when he went to congratulate Safin....

He broke it after he lost.....like for no particular reason he just smashed it as he walked away

Dark chocolate is always the best.

I like those little Italian chocolates too... what are they called? the ones with the little messages and the color coded foil wrappers?
