I know this thread might be a little early for you European's and American's, but we're only just over 12 hours away from the first match in Australia.

Taking:

Voltchkov @ 6

Might be more to come, haven't got any odds...

P.S. Feel free to post picks on the WTA, just a little joke ;)

Russia (-131) over France
France has the choice of surfaces and they choose carpet? Bad move, Russia has very strong carpet players in Safin and Davydenko with a combined 12-4 record in Davis Cup on carpet. France's best player, Grosjean, will be out with a back injury. The burden falls to Gasquet and Clement, while Clement has played well recently, Gasquet has not. France has the edge in doubles, but I see Russia having an advantage with both of their singles players.

Argentina (+161) over Croatia
I'll take a small stab at the underdog due to the circumstances. Croatia is pretty much completely reliant on Ljubicic and Ancic, and now Ljubicic is suffering fatigue and stomach problems (will play though) and Ancic has a herniated disc in his back. Back injuries are never good and it is questionable if he can play. Nalbandian got killed by Ivan in Miami, but it shouldn't happen again. He is a tough DC player, with a record of 14-2 overall. Calleri looked very impressive with his run in Miami and proved that he isn't just a clay court specialist, he has a lot of game on any surface. With Croatia dealing with injury problems, they shouldn't be favored this much.

France over Russia @2.210
Tough to call this but feeling it could be 3-2, or 2-3. I like frances chances either way. They have edges on doubles and really clement has excellent chances of winning both matches with Gasquet winning 1 probably. Trust me Russia would have loved this meeting on clay but France is too smart for that.

Celement over Davydenko @2.8
Clement way underrated. He beat Nadal, took a set from Federer, and tore up Ancic to claim marcelles. Davy hasn't done shit this year other than some steady wins. Davy lost to some nonamer indoors recently too, and has been a U/E machine as of late.

Gasquet over Safin @2.22
Safin isn't quite back to his old self yet. Got tore up by Nieminin, and look how many times he got broken by Donkey and Rochus. Sure gasquet hasnt done shit but he's been alrite. I'll take the chances.

Add:

Croatia to beat the Dopers @1.629 (Big play)

Taking the 2005 champs simply because they are solid. Ljub/Ancic owns the doubles, have beaten many double specalists including Damm and Bryans. Ancic can beat Calleri indoors, and Ljub owns Augustin. Nalbandian is an unknown factor but I don't believe he'll win both of his matches. If he does it should still be 3-2 for Croatia.

Edit: Ancic is doubtful so taking the Dopers @2.5 instead with a regular play.

Bro, don`t play Croatia with big money!
Ancic is doubtful because an injury...Ancic said that he`s not sure if he`s going to play tomorrow.
If he`s not going to play, Croatia is in deep shit, especially because they are without Karlovic this time.

Good evening all! :bigwave:

Having read everything in this thread...

1. Gooch over Mirnyi is certainly worth something at that price :yeah:
2. Not sure what to make of France v Russia tie...if Marat were near to full fitness he'd take Richie down and Russia would go 2/0 tomorrow. However, 5 sets will probably be too much for him. If so, France might scrape the win.
3. Argentina v Croatia - more injury stories. Doesn't matter whether Mario plays or not...Bandy should win that match anyway. 1/1 after day 1, 2/1 to Argentina after doubs possibly - especially if Mario/Ivan aren't together...Bandy win on Sunday? Argentina look good

Mario - why was Big Ivo left off the team? This is the one time the Croats really need him!

For anyone interested...

I think GB v Serbia & Montenegro tie is well worth some coin...evens on both teams with Serbs slight favourites imo.

Can't see past Day 01 ending 1/1 really. Greg should beat Tipsy although it could be a close match, whilst Djokovic should pummel poor Arv.

Friday's bet:

Rusedski x Djokovic @ 1.84 - small stake

Why everyone discounting Clement as an automatic win for Russia? He bageled Haas, beat Nadal, won Marselles, took a set from Federer and simply playing very good tennis. If anything it's going to be a pretty good matchup.

Clements only meeting with davydenko was a 5 set lost but he was leading 2 sets to none. At 2.8 i'll take the risk for a good payout.

I just want to clarify something, so forgive me if I sound thick

France chose an indoor fast surface against Russia when they knew Safin was going to play for Russia?

Is this correct?

It has been on a couple of forums. The original source is Croatian radio..:haha:
I think he`s going to play, but just wanted you to know that he has some kind of an injury ( in his back) and he might not be 100% fit!

Good luck anyway with your bets! :yeah:

This is from the other forum, www.bettingadvice.com
A Croatian guy wrote this:

"Ancic said that his back is not in a good shape and that doctors reccomended at least a week of good rest and that he doubts he'll play tomorrow. Also Ljubicic said some pessimistic stuff that Argentina is now a big favourite in this match and that it would be a big surprise if Croatia wins this.

Now, I dont know how much of this is true or are these statements only a strategic moves. "

Eh, Blake is a hard courter, simple as that. He's just 2-3 this year on grass, losing in the 1st round at Wimbledon to Hernych. He's playing great tennis right now, but I can't trust him at those odds on grass. Gonzo is a very capable player.

This grass is for Roddick, and Roddick only. He better win both singles or the U.S. could be in trouble.
