Mandy in Love

It turns out that dating a world-class tennis player isn't so different from dating a regular guy — Mandy Moore and Andy Roddick like to dress casual, go bowling, and stay in to watch DVDs, too. Mandy gives us the scoop on life and love with Andy and reveals the secrets to how they make their relationship work.

What were your first impressions of Andy?
He came to the How to Deal movie set with another tennis player, James Blake. They both hung out for like an hour. I was just struck on how tall he was because every guy that I've dated in the past has been like my height. And I always wanted someone taller than me. I loved that he was so casual, too. He was just in shorts and a T-shirt. I could tell that he was really relaxed, like this is no big deal. We went out and ate nasty catered dinner at midnight, all of us.

Do you remember what you were wearing the day you met?
I was wearing my costume [from the movie]. It was the outfit that I hated most in the film. I couldn't believe I was meeting him, wearing these red pants and a tank top. It was terrible. So I quickly ran back and changed into these pants and a T-shirt — very casual. I went to his tennis match the next day, and he told me that he was very struck at how very casual I was, too, and he liked that. I was like "I'm not going out of my way to dress up for someone. I'm just going to a tennis match." We talked for two hours afterwards and hit it off, and didn't really know where it was going to go because he was leaving and I was leaving. But, we exchanged numbers and just found ourselves calling each other a lot and hanging out.

How often to you get a chance to hang out?
Not as often as I would like, but it's all about compromise. His tennis season is almost over and he's getting ready to have some time off — I spent last year, almost all of November and December, with him. It was such a great time, hanging out and living a normal life. I was with him in Florida and I was going grocery shopping and cleaning the house — I loved it.

Do you spend a lot of time on the phone?
Yeah. It's an adjustment getting used to a long distance relationship. Last year he lived out here in L.A. and so we'd hang out. But now I'm traveling to go see Andy because my schedule is a bit more accommodating — he can't get out here and he doesn't like L.A. very much.

What was it like watching him win the U.S. Open this year?
I knew before he had even started the Open that he was going to win. I knew it. He was playing unbelievable all summer and he had the confidence, and there wasn't a doubt in my mind. It was just him win, it made me want to work really hard and do something in my life, to make my family and my loved ones proud of me.

They already are proud.
I don't think there's anything comparable in my business, so maybe it would be something outside of what I do. Friends, family, acquaintances, and random people now pat him on the back and say, "That was amazing. Great job." He's such a cool guy and he deserves it. He works hard.

You're used to being in the public eye, but how is Andy finding fame?
Andy doesn't care about this industry. I don't think he 100 percent understands it and nor does he want to and I love him more for that. He's not used to having to talk about his private life — all of these things are starting to come up and he's like, "How do you deal with it? I don't want people asking me questions about you, and why is it any of their business?" So, I'm trying to help him with all of that stuff now.

Do you feel now that you're with him, the pair of you get focused on more, like Jen and Ben?
No, both of us aren't at the opening of every envelope. I try not to bring our relationship into the public eye; he tries to do the same.

So what's your ideal night out together?
Going out to dinner and a movie. I'm lucky that my boyfriend is lazy, too, and he likes to stay home and watch movies. We have an extensive DVD collection, and just talk and hang out and just watch TV.

Aside from tennis, what are some of the things Andy's good at? You said he's a better dancer than you are...
Andy's an amazing dancer. He's good at board games, debates, bowling. He's perfect.

Before, you had said you were in love with Wilmer [Valderama, Mandy's ex-boyfriend and star of That '70s Show]. Looking back do you still think you were?
I thought I was in love with him, but I was too young to really know what love was. Now, with Andy, I do. He's taught me a lot about myself, and I think I've grown up with him. Plus, it helps that he's not really into the spotlight and isn't about going out and being seen. All of that can put a strain on a relationship.

What struggles are you having dating someone like him?
I've never dated someone who's such a heartthrob. I'll go to his matches and watch girls flip out. He's so oblivious, which I think makes him so much cooler. But we just try to be normal and we do normal "couple" things. We're really not that exciting.

Is there any part of your life that needs improvement?
Life is great. I have no cause for complaints. I'm just growing up and still figuring out who I am and what I want to be, and what I want to do. My interests are always changing and my career has kind of evolved, and I see myself doing this for years and years. And now, I see myself having a family and maybe this being less of a priority and getting married one day — not any time soon, but maybe it will happen in the next 10 years or so.

awwwwww is right.

i think she likes him.

12-26-2003, 04:42 AM
lol ya think? I couldn't really tell

She was pretty sickeningly sweet about Wilmer and if she says that wasn't "real" and this is, all I can say is thank god she wants to keep it more private!!! :p

That was private???

I know more about that relationship now than I know about relationships of people I have actually met.

This makes Martina looked positively closed mouthed about her relationships.

Deboogle!.
12-26-2003, 04:55 AM
lol.... yeah.... for Mandy.... that's private. don't forget, she's hollywood not tennis... for hollywood, that's keeping quiet.

I've seen plenty of Hollywood types keep their mouths shut about their relationships.

The girl likes to talk about her relationships. She isn't keeping it private in the least. Well, as least she didn't talk about having sex with Andy, but that's about all she left out.

MisterQ
12-26-2003, 05:02 AM
it's true, she did tell a lot. I wonder how andy feels about this. it could make his life more difficult when the public and media know so many details. especially if (when?) they decide to call it off, or are having trouble.

Deboogle!.
12-26-2003, 05:10 AM
I dunno, I guess most of the stuff she said was either pretty public knowledge or not really particularly private.

Deb! She talke the way I talk to my girlfriends.

He wore this, and I was wearing this but then I changed into that, and he said that he liked the way I dressed and that was so funny because that was exactly the same thing I was thinking about him. And then we all went out and ate this dinner that was awful, but we had such a good time.

I can't imagine chattering much more about a relationship. Damm. I don't even tell my friends any more that she was telling.

well, imo, i don't think either one of them can really go into detail and talk a lot about what their relationship is like, because they do normal things, which is why i love them both seperately, and even more as a couple ;rocker2: what do you want them to tell reporters, yeah we watched this episode, then that one, we had some chips, then watched this movie, kinda boring and redundant dont you think? and about her past relationship with Wilmer, i didn't really read up on what was said about that relationship, and how she talked about him, etc. but i highly doubt that she's lieing about what she says about Andy. seriously, i think what they both say about eachother is genuine. Mandy is more used to the media, and is a girl, so she will say more than Andy. Andy plays tennis, why would he be a master at answering personal questions??? i love it how at first when their relationship was getting more and more popular how he used to shy away and kinda blush when speaking about her:hug: and now he's all like "oh is your wife coming tomorrow" OMG DEAD!!!:haha::haha::haha: when i read this in his interviews, i crap up all the time

star
12-27-2003, 01:18 AM
I don't think he should snap at a reporter like that. I think he should just calmly say that he doesn't like to talk about his private life during interviews.

Deboogle!.
12-27-2003, 02:20 AM
I forget who he said that to, but it was someone he knew better than "just a random reporter" I think.... or I could be remembering it wrong LOL

J. Corwin

I don't think he knew the guy personally, or anything more than just a reporter. I used to think that was funny and OK too. But again, Star has me now convinced that the jab was uncalled for.

Deb, you're thinking about when he did it to Bud at the RCA championships, they even showed that part during the finals. but he has done it another time in an interview. if i remember correctly, they were seriously asking him a whole bunch of personal questions, and when he got that, he gave them that sort of answer to shut them up/make the realize they should be asking tennis questions. he didn't do it again after that though, but personally i loved that quote. it's sarcasm at it's best, and im a sucker for sarcasm

Yeah....... well I am such a poor speller(and typist) Just kick me when I get it wrong. :)

Also I think that SARCASM (see i can learn) is not good in a relationship. I think sometimes people talk to each other very roughly and over time that errodes the relationship.

I like how sarcastic Andy gets in interviews whenever they start asking personal questions, too, Naldo! That comment he made about "How's your wife? Everything OK at home?" to a nosy reporter was GREAT. It gets the point across nicely to 'back off!'.

And it's awesome that Andy is a great dancer too! He showed some good moves on SNL and sometimes you can tell from the way a guy moves whether he's a good dancer or not. It's all about feeling comfortable with yourself and Andy is very comfy with himself, as well can all tell. ;)

Seriously, though. I've never even heard this guy sing a complete song. Of course, I can't escape knowing who he is etc. etc. because he is really being hyped. But, is he a good singer? I just heard part of one song and it sounded pretty generic to me.

Deboogle!.
12-31-2003, 02:22 PM
he has a gift of song, without a doubt, his voice is unbelievable. I like his CD, but yes, it is pretty generic. It was thrown together in a few months so there wasn't a whole lot of room for creative genius. But if he plays his cards right and steps up and does music that will separate himself and stuff he could be around for a looooooooong time b/c he has fans from age 10-100 and the type of voice that never goes out of style.

star
12-31-2003, 02:24 PM
But is he as good as Josh Grobin?

;)

Deboogle!.
12-31-2003, 02:36 PM
ummm their voices are very different. I don't particularly like Josh's voice that much, though I recognize that he has a gift as well. Clay's voice is more suited to pop/adult contemporary - he has pure tone, sings with wonderful diction and technique. He has a PERFECT Broadway voice and I hope he decides to explore that one day (sort of like Mandy Moore, whose voice may not be the best in the world but it's excellently suited to musical theatre).

Josh is just more operatic and therefore will appeal to an older crowd. Because Clay can get onto top 40 radio, he'll be able to appeal to younger people too. I've read stuff comparing them and calling them competitors, but I don't agree at all. I just see them as very different. They both have wonderful voices.

I like to talk about the nuances of music, can you tell? :)

Mandy's new movie opens next Friday so she'll be doing a lot of press appearances.

She was on Leno last night and he asked her about Andy, she said they spent a low-key new year's in florida. She's very proud of him. She got a tattoo (a cute little baby heart on her toe) and didn't tell him b/c she wanted to see how long it'd take him to notice, but People magazine found out and mentioned it so when she went to FL for New Year's he ripped off her shoe to see it and Jay Leno said something like "yea that's what I'd want - see you for the first time in a while and rip your SHOE off!" (it was funny lol).... I can picture Andy doing that though lol.

Oh, she also denied the reality show and repeated what she said that she'd never want to be a part of one and that the press got out of control and that Andy thought it was going to be a documentary. She made it sound like it's not gonna happen.

01/05/04 07:00 am ET NBC Today
01/05/04 05:00 pm ET MTV Total Request Live 01/06/04 09:00 am ET SYN Live with Regis and Kelly

01/14/04 12:37 am ET CBS The Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn
01/16/04 09:00 am ET SYN The Sharon Osbourne Show

Sharon Osbourne will be fun because Mandy's friends with Kelly and Jack :) Kilborn will be funny too b/c well, he's always funny, and she's doing 5 questions and last time he made her try to play tennis

I dunno who cares but I came across these articles when getting Andy news...

from chicago Sun-Times:
-
As for her love life, Moore says that she's no dating expert. "I remember going on my first date at 13 and going to a movie for the first time by myself with a boy. He held my hand and it was electric. It was an 'Oh, my God' moment for me." She's a little less vocal about a failed romance with Wilmer Valderrama.

For the last year, she has been dating hottie tennis star Roddick. Mention his name and she brightens and says, "I wish he was here right now."

Moore met him over a year ago when she didn't know anything about pro tennis. "I hate to say it but I wasn't a big tennis fan," she says. "I didn't hang out at the matches."

They met in Toronto when her mother went to one of Roddick's matches. "My mom met up with him. I knew of him and joked with my mom that if she met Andy Roddick, maybe she could invite him to the set where I was filming 'How to Deal.' I had read an interview he did where he was really self-deprecating, adorable and funny."

That was enough for Mandy's parental unit, too. She went into motion after the tennis match.

"I gotta hand it to my mom because she came through and Andy obliged," she purrs. "I thought for sure that he'd never show. I'm the total quiet, sit-in-the-corner girl, in general, who never asks guys out, so this was a stretch for me."

"For a minute I thought that Andy would think, 'Who is Mandy Moore? There's no way I'm going.' But he came!" she says.

Butterflies hit hard when Roddick and a friend showed up at the set. "I got back to my trailer and my assistant jumped in my face and whispered, 'Andy Roddick is here and he's with James Blake, who is another tennis player.' Of course, this was the day I was in an outfit I hated the most. So I ran by the guys and said, 'Hey! Hey! I'm just gonna go change. And nice to meet you.'

"I ended up having the next day off and went to one of Andy's matches. He won the match. I had never seen a tennis game before and I kept thinking, 'That guy is a stud.' He just kicked everyone's ass."

The moral of the story is that girls should ask guys out. "Be brave. There's nothing to lose," Moore says. "That said, I don't know if I'd ever do it again because it was very nerve-racking. I'm old-school. I like the guy to ask me out."

Roddick is quite the boyfriend, according to Moore.

"My boy never lets me pay," she says. "That's very sweet, but I don't like it. I would love to treat him, too, because I love someone doing it for me." She says that Roddick is big "on the little things. I don't need fancy gifts. I just need phone calls. I'm really not a material girl."

and from Canoe.ca:
-----
Moore has yet to suffer the extremes of Hollywood celebrity, the dark side that comes with the unwanted attention of stalkers and psychos. "Not really," she says of having weird encounters. "I mean, some people are excited and will come up and say 'Hi!' in a restaurant or sometimes in the bathroom, which is a little weird. 'Let me wash my hands first!' But, other than that, no. I mean, not really."

Things are changing, however, especially as her relationship with Roddick has become more public and more photographed. "A little bit, yeah," she says of the change, the escalation of attention. "A little bit over the past couple of months, that's happened, which is very strange and odd and I don't like it one bit. But I guess that's just the way that the cookie crumbles. It comes along with everything."

Even the folksy story about how she hooked up with Roddick has helped fuel the gossipy fires. That is because of the involvement of her mother. In some accounts, the rumours made it seem as if Mandy sent her mother to go after Roddick for her. Not quite so, Moore says.

"Well, okay, yes, in a sense. (But) I didn't send my mom. She was going to watch him play tennis anyway. And I kind of said jokingly, 'If you get to meet this guy, invite him over. I'd love to say hello.' I was working and I couldn't go with her."

Moore figured nothing would come of it because of two things. "One, he's not going to have any clue who I am and, two, he's going to be really weirded out by some weird mom coming up to him and inviting him to the set (of her movie).

"But he obliged. He came and we hit it off and I feel like in many ways, he's like the male version of me in a sense. We're both very close to our families and just stuff that we've gone through in our lives in being young people and finding success at a young age."

Roddick must like his ladies modest. Moore certainly is. In Chasing Liberty, there is a nude scene in which her character goes skinny dipping in a Prague river.

Andy likes modest women. Mandy did a skinny dipping scene

lol yeah... or wait maybe I missed the end and didn't copy the whole thing lol Well yea I only copied the Andy-relevant parts.. here are the next few paragraphs LOL
-----
"Well, you know that wasn't me," Moore says, her voice rising to sound insistent. "No! No! No! That was a body double. The poor girl, too." The river, Moore says, was filthy. "The girl just took off her clothes and jumped in the water and was splashing and stuff. I was very thankful that there was someone willing to do that for me because I'm a pretty modest girl, obviously, and pretty hygienic. I was like, 'I don't even want to put a toe in the water.' "

Another scene showed the real Moore letting a towel drop away as the camera watches from a discreet angle. "Taking the towel off? It was a little weird, a little weird. Obviously, I was wearing something underneath (a tube top), but it's odd. You grow comfortable around people because you've been around them for weeks and they've done many movies and they understand that it's just part of the job. But even just that insinuation -- like there's nothing there -- it's weird. I don't want anyone seeing me like that.

"I will sit here right now and say that I will never do nudity, ever. That's how I feel right now and I'm pretty secure in saying that's how I'll feel, period."

I finally got around to visiting Mandy Moore's official website and boy, what an eye-opener! I had no idea she used to be blond. I barely recognized her! She's not a bad singer, either. I still haven't seen any of her movies, but she's a welcome breath of fresh air apart from the Britneys and Christinas who are so intent on trying to out-shock and out-slut each other in the press  .

I have to say that I much prefer Mandy's brunette hair. It's more natural looking and flattering for her coloring. Somehow, she seems more elegant with darker hair. Plus, it helps make her stand out from all the other dyed-blonde fakes like Madonna, Britney and every chick that schlepped on to "The Bachelor" set.

Which hair color do you all prefer on Mandy? Blonde or brunette? (the blonde pic below cracks me up; she kinda looks like Jessica Simpson here)

Deboogle!.
01-05-2004, 01:38 AM
I MUCH prefer Mandy brunette (and she prefers herself that way too)

If you're in the mood for a tear-jerker, A Walk To Remember is great. She was cute in The Princess Diaries too but a small part.

For songs, I recommend from her album Mandy Moore - Cry, When I Talk To You

and from her newest album Coverage - Can We Still Be Friends and Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters.

Brunette. By far. And I agree that Mandy Moore is much better than Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera in terms of handling the media attention and publicity. Don't particularly enjoy her music, though. At least not her first album. But even she admitted that that was total crap.

P.S. Mandy is due to be on Ellen soon and I'm sure she'll gush about Andy some more. I'll try to get an exact date.

Yes, they JUST did "Personal Questions"

They asked her what went through her mind the first time she and Andy kissed. She was blushing and embarrassed and then just said "he um has really nice lips"

and then with all the brithey marriage stuff he (Damian) asked if she and Andy had talked about it and mandy said "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO no no no" or something equally as emphatic lmao

Basically they were stupid and realized it quick but not before it was too late.

as for the personal questions to mandy on trl you could tell they bothered her a little.

But I am glad Andy, Brian, and the Bryans are not doing the reality show, I don't see how it could've been good for any of them.

This is why I hate newspapers:
--
Andy Roddick, the world No 1, is said to have split up with Mandy Moore, his actress-singer-model-etc girlfriend. Roddick is still best known back in the States for his romance with Moore, who was reportedly irritated that her boyfriend had agreed to appear in a reality TV show later this year.

Towards the close of 2003, Roddick refused to talk about his private life. If anyone from the press asked why Moore was not in tow, he would turn on the journalist and ask, voice soaked in sarcasm, whether his wife was there as cheerleader-in-chief, giggling encouragement as he tapped away on a laptop.
--
So.... because she has her own life and a career, they must've broken up? Or because he's a normal human being and doesn't want to air his laundry in public, they've broken up? Are they serious? LOL

well as of about a week ago, Mandy was still gushing about him on tv. gah no wonder I'm such a cynic ;)

no Mandy is perfect for Andy. and Robbi isn't with Minnie anymore, that's better off seeing as though Minnie is some what of a slut really. always dating younger guys for brief periods of time. oh and the newspaper thin, most probably 100% bullshit because andy NEVER liked talking about his personal life, not only during the end of 2003. and the turing the Mandy question on the reporters happened in the summer of 2003:yawn: man the media is a loser eh! and why don't they ever do any research before. oh Mandy's not with Andy at every single tennis event. well no shit, she's doing premiers and stuff for her movies and promoting her album. the media

Speaking of Gwyneth Paltrow, I saw this poster with her on it in the subway a few months ago. The poster had her in a jogging suit looking very wholesome and pretty -- she was advertising some run for charity. Anyway, someone had written on it in marker, something like this:

"Well, look at this, if it isn't the sweetheart Gwnyth Paltrow! The same bitch who stiffed me on my tip at Bob's Grill on 42nd Street! Go to hell, Gwnyth!"

Deb you may want to chase this one down. I saw in the Lleyton forum in an articles thread that the sun hearald reported Mandy and Andy were over. I know you've pooh pooed this story before... and maybe the Sun-Hearald ... doesn't have a great reputation got it wrong.

yea star, I think that's what I posted in this thread a while back... and it was purely based on two facts: Mandy didn't go to Australia and Mandy didn't want to be in the reality show.

no factual confirmation= :bs:

This is the second report. The first was from the Telegraph. Right?

Maybe they picked it up from the Telegraph, but they just prinited it yesterday or today... depending on what you call Sunday in Australia. :)

I wouldn't be surprised if they did split up down the line. They've both got powerful careers that pull them apart.

errr bunk, didn't you post an article just a few days ago on RO about Andy and Mandy who were gonna be at the tournament, scottsdale was it? and saying someone broke up just because one wasn't there is total :bs: Mandy wasn't at the US Open the whole entire time, up until the finals. clearly they were broken up, right?

Deboogle!.
02-02-2004, 12:51 AM
Oh sure.... I mean I love them both and have since well before they dated, but I don't see them lasting forever. Not at their ages with their lives.

I think the article about them I posted was in regards to the Siebel Open. Though, Mandy's pretty inconspicuous at the moment so I wouldn't be shellshocked to see her at Davis Cup or any of the other tourneys coming up on US Soil. I agree though, star, if she isn't seen anywhere around Andy throughout the spring, then I would start to wonder.

Where did you hear it?

Deboogle!.

That's what we were discussing. Deb thinks it is bunk.

:haha: please tell me you wrote that on purpose!

I've read it a bunch of places, but most of it sources the same two articles in the Telegraph and Herald Sun. It's not that I don't believe this particular breakup report, I just don't believe any time the press reports on a breakup til I get confirmation. I don't like poking into people's private lives that much and people like Andy and Mandy are not going to tell the press about breaking up I don't think, so yea...

For what it's worth, though I'm not sure it's even Mandy at all, on her official site just a couple days ago someone as Mandy posted that the relationship is fine, but then joked that it might be easier for them if people thought they were split up. Again, for what it's worth.

We'll find out soon enough anyway :)

OK this is about as good confirmation as we can get at this point.... from the DC article on Andy's official site:

"Yesterday, the team, consisting of Andy, Mardy Fish, Robbie Ginepri, and the Bryan twins, arrived from their various locations, and reacquainted themselves with Team Captain, Pat McEnroe. In Andy's case, after a long, relaxing weekend in Los Angeles, he was on the first plane out Monday morning to be with the team."

Andy doesn't live in LA, own property in LA, spend time in LA, etc. But Mandy does :)

02-04-2004, 02:26 AM
Seriously, if Andy and Mandy broke up, I think it would be all over the place in the celebrity mags.

Plus, I think Mandy would be looking pretty miserable at her press functions. ;)

Does anyone see NW magazine that shows pic of Andy and Mandy?
I think this is Australia magazine.

According to RnR message board, someone talked about this but no pic.
Also, I looked in the NW magazine today and I saw the pic of Andy touching Mandy's breast. He was totally grabbing it and he looked straight in the camera. Poor Mandy didn't know what hit her judging by the look on her face! Very funny, made me chuckle out loud in the supermarket. [R] - Diem, Mar/3/2004 05:18:00 [-05 EST]
