Following the "supporting" thread :)
I think we should have such topic to discuss our team on a whole :)
This week we play France in Pau :)

Here are few words in Sport-Express newspaper...
To not-Russian speakers - it's just info about team members :)

As I've mentioned somewhere, Kolya, Marat and Dima are likely to play singles (Kolya vs Seb - quite possibly) and Misha probably with Marat - doubles. That's what Shamil said ;)

And btw, the comment sounds quite promising :)

Kolya is consistent in DC, at least in 2005. On his good day, Marat can handle Gasquet and Grosjean easily. If this tie is for doubles to decide, Igor shouldn't be left out. I can't see a better team then Kolya/Igor. Dima is also a good choice. I'll go with Dima/Marat in singles, Kolya/Igor in doubles. Misha is now in off-form mode :help:

I seriously think Misha should play doubles with either Igor or Mitya because we need a very strong server for this. Marat and Misha play really well together but only when Marat is 100 % recovered. If Tarpi decides to put Kolya for both singles, then the above should do the trick but if Kolya just plays one single game - then he should play doubles with Igor..hell these 2 beat Damm and Paes in Indian Wells and almost beat Hanley and Uliett...they have been playing together for ages!!!!

Anyway, whatever the decision, I am sure Tarpi knows what he is doing

Hey guys,
just wanted to share with you my thoughts regarding Russia DC tie against France. I may not be Russian, but hopefully I’m posting in the right thread… And congratulation for your great team! (sorry for those who will be bored by the long text)

How I fell in love with Team Russia

I’ve almost always liked Russian players. For different reasons, but it is the first time, that in my little life as a tennis fan, I get to say I am fan of a team. It’s not the same as when it is your country. You’re not a fan of the players but you want them to win because they are from you’re country, even if in regular situation you wouldn’t care much about their results. Or when you are a fan of a player, and consequently support all his team, because you want him to win or just be happy.
That is the big difference I am feeling right now.
I want them to win, because I think they truly represent what tennis is: an athletic and smart GAME. I think tennis lost its popularity because it lost touch with the people. It is harder for this sport today to gain new fans, not just because of bad coverage, but also because people have a hard time relating to the players. That’s what I think anyway. And that’s where Team Russia comes in the picture.
They may not be the most entertaining guys when you take them individually, but as a Team, they combine everything that is attractive in sports: performance, character, game, fitness, speed, and FUN (you can call it entertainment if you prefer). I may get carried away, but it felt like watching Brasil in soccer. All the good vibes were pouring out of my TV, the French did put up a great fight, no match was an easy win, and yet, the Russians players seemed so happy to be there. And almost all of them expressed gratitude, at one point or another to have been selected and given the opportunity to play and show what they were capable of! :worship:
I have never seen any tennis team have as much fun(not silly fun, they knew when to be serious ;) ) as I saw the Russians have last weekend. When you combine it with the quality of the tennis, it makes up for a great and FUN weekend. I do not think it is due to the fact that they don’t take the French seriously, I highly doubt that. :o
Safin was asked what he liked in the Davis cup and how he felt about it. He said it was great because you get to be with your friends, train and rest , have fun, and play soccer!
During Davydenko’s singles on Friday, Safin and Tursunov were fighting on the courtside with bottles. The rest of the time, all the team just had a big smile on their faces, cracking jokes. Do not misunderstand, they were following the match, just no nail-biting.
Nicolas Escudé mentioned speaking through signs with Marat, during that match.
On Saturday, during the doubles, I think the jokes were flying very high, they almost did not stop. It was very discreet, but french commentators were kind of surprised to see the Russian team so relaxed. They thought maybe it was to take some pressure off, or because they didn’t care for the doubles. But Tursunov and Youzhny were sweating their asses off on the court, even though they lost. It looked like the guys in the stands were making fun of Tursunov, especially when they won the 3rd set, it felt like: You did it!How do you feel? In a mocking way. At some point, Tursunov, who describes himself as “the least serious” of Safin’s squad (he must be crazy then, lol) (according to L'Equipe) even threw a ball at them! And all this in a great atmosphere. Even at the draw ceremony, I think it was on Thursday, Davydenko and Safin were laughing.
I am amazed and pleased at the same time, to see high level tennis players get along that well, without feeling jealousy or rivalries as in some teams :) (cough..Germany…cough).
Russia is not the only team like this I agree. Others like France, USA, also have a lot of friendship and support among them.
But I like the combination with the depth of players and the amazing tennis. I think it sets them apart.
Seeing them have so much fun on and beside the court was a blast all weekend. I didn’t know Davydenko’s sense of humor, but considering how much he made Marat laugh this weekend, I guess it is more than ok. It was a pleasure to see him relaxed and with emotions on his face.
Last but not least, their captain, who is maybe the coach who speaks and expresses the least, said himself that the reason of his team success is the sense of humor. That every single member of the team was very funny, including doctors and trainers, and that it was very important to keep good relationships among the players, that they have fun together.
My little cousin who was home with me this weekend, who usually doesn’t like watching tennis because he thinks it is boring told me: “it actually looks fun”.
That is what it is, a game. And when it is played brilliantly, that’s where the magic starts. :worship:
Whether Russia is going to win, is not really my point here, I just think, once again, they found a positive way to make themselves different from any other team. I just wait for Safin and Tursunov to get better results on grass, and they will be the most complete team.
Let’s the fun continue throughout the year!

It was not boring or too long at all ;) I completly share you mind :p they have all such a great sense of humour (yes, even Davydenko who is deadpan :p) and they get along very well... I wish I could be part of this team :hearts: I would be :haha: all day long! :p

Back to the subject. As far as I remeber our (I mean Russian ;) ) bench's in front of C13... So we'll have to choose our Premium sector now.

Mashik
05-17-2006, 07:07 PM
So we're on the right side from the umpire? :) What is the LUX sector in front of it in ?

Andy.. Andy.. Andy... I think I have to do smth with this my Andymania! Or I don't know what'll happened to me when I see him

Show some patriotism girls
I have feeling we will lose this tie. Tursunov is hopeless on clay, Igor is injured, Misha is in slump, Marat is an oaf, a headcase. Only one Kolya against Roddick, Blake and Bryans twins :tape:

{Annie}
05-18-2006, 09:04 AM
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Rusik I love the last paragraph after the phrase "Show some patriotism girls" :rolls: :rolls: :rolls: :rolls:

1. Marat is an OAF in the ATP Tour, he NEVER let us down during DC ;)

2. Igor has more than enough time to recover till September if the surgery was anything similar to the one he had in October

3. Misha and Mitya - yeah I agree  But Mitya and Marat can make quite a good doubles team ;)

4. Re: Kolya... маленький, да удаленький  I think he totally :rocker: I adore the guy :p

Mashik
05-18-2006, 09:06 AM
Oh, come on! We'll win it! You know, Marat always does everything he can and even more for the team (and even sometimes becomes "normal' for this matches ;) ). And, forget about the doubles , we have Marat and Davydenko against Andy and James. I think, our chances are not bad at all! Plus home advantage ;)
So everything will be OK

BTW Some say, Robby Ginepri may play instead of James  I dont know may be it's a funny joke, but.. We'll see

How do you see Russia’s chances in the Davis Cup this year?

This is one of my biggest goals of the year and I have been thinking about it a lot. We have a good chance for the semi final against the US on clay at home. Russia has a good team and lots of depth of players to choose from. Should we win the semi final we will play the final at home in Moscow and we have a good chance to win the cup for a second time.

That's the spirit :yeah:

Annie, those crazy prices ($200 for a day) are for VIP seats - LUX ones (usually called premium) are a lil cheaper.

BTW, WhyTF C18-22 have no access to vip zone??? They always had! Will they build a wall there? huh Cuz you can get on those seats only from the ground floor=vip zone...

Back to the subject. Since we wanna get backstage I suggest buying premium (=lux) tickets (C25 or 26) for Saturday (cuz it's cheaper - not sure everyone would pay that weird prices) and C15 for Friday and Sunday.

So it'll be 3000+2000+2000=7000 our beloved roubles. What do you think?

{Annie}

God! What is all that panic about? He said DC this year took lots of effort and kinda spoiled the beginning of the clay season and he'll now think first before he agrees to play DC. That doesn't mean he refuses. Besides, Shamil says there's nothing to worry about - they'll persuade him to play.

MariaV
06-06-2006, 11:39 AM
Yeah, calm down Mashik, Shamil T. said they'll persuade Kolya and NOT TO WORRY! Kolya was just a tad upset at the pressconf after defeating Gaudio. Or it was Kolya's weird sense of humour. Although Shmurnov said it looked like he had perepared this statement for some time. Kolya is too weird sometimes. But this DC semis will drive me nuts anyways so what else is new.

This week Russia has 7 players in top-100:
Davydenko - 6
Andreev - 29
Tursunov - 33
Youzhny - 50
Kunitsyn - 91
Safin - 97
Gabashvili - 99

... and Korolev - 115 ;)

Of course this is not same thing as about girls - 6 in top-15 and 17 in top-100, but now we have several variants for squad for every surface (except grass).
Not bad :D

No, Igor just didn't have good results in February-August-2005 (except Valencia of course), so it's his natural rating I think. But in autumn he has lot of points to protect...

This won't do Russia any good if the guys won't get 3 wins vs USA in September. :( I can sooo feel it will extremely stressful for me again.
Kolya - doesn't look too good right now but hopefully good enough to win 2 Americans, Igor - out, Mitya - not for clay, Marat - only God knows, Misha - CAN he be the savour and win the DC once again?

Misha finally won two matches in a row in clay in Kitzbuehel, so who knows  I sincerely hope Kolya snaps out of it  and Marat despite horrifying results in individual tournaments has NEVER let us down in a DC tie :yeah: :worship:

What do you guys think for next month? Right now I'd guess Davydenko and Safin for the singles, Dmitry and Youzhny for the doubles. Who knows? It'd be disappointing to lose in Russia, on red clay to the US.

i think dima will be for singles as well and marat/misha for doubles :o

So you think no Safin for singles? I was thinking Safin and Davydenko for starters on Friday. Marat mainly because of his history and past success in Davis Cup, and Davydenko for his clay court prowess. Then if either one gets hurt or doesn't perform well, you could always throw Dmitry or Youzhny as a substitute on Sunday.

There are so many options. Korolev could even be in the mix.

Davydenko, Youzhny Rejoin Russia For Davis Cup Quarterfinal With France

Russia has re-armed with a loaded lineup for next month's Davis Cup quarterfinal against France. Fourth-ranked Nikolay Davydenko and 17th-ranked Mikhail Youzhny return to the Russian roster, joining Marat Safin and Igor Andreev when the defending Davis Cup champion hosts France on a red clay court inside Moscow's Sports Palace Luzhniki, April 6-8.

It marks the third straight quarterfinal clash between the two nations.

"Now, we have all our top players available, which is good news," Russian Davis Cup captain Shamil Tarpischev told the Davis Cup web site. Dmitry Tursunov, who clinched Russia's 2006 semifinal victory over the United States with a grueling win over Andy Roddick, and teenager Evgeny Korolev, are both options as well.

Richard Gasquet will likely lead France, which has alternated Sebastien Grosjean and Arnaud Clement as its second singles starter in its recent World Group ties. Given the fact red clay has never been Clement's best surface and is now a challenging surface for former French Open semifinalist Grosjean as he nears his 29th birthday, French captain Guy Forget may opt for another singles selection. There are 13 Frenchman currently ranked in the top 100 of the ATP rankings.

Davydenko and Gasquet have split their two career clay-court matches with the Russian registering a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, victory in the 2005 Davis Cup quarters. Safin is 3-1 against Gasquet, while Youzhny and Gasquet have split their two meetings.

Russia holds a 4-2 head-to-head leave over France in Davis Cup play, including a 3-2 victory in the 2002 final in Paris when Youzhny became the first man in the 102-year history of Davis Cup to fight back from a two sets to love deficit in the final match of a Davis Cup final as he scored a 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Paul-Henri Mathieu to clinch the Cup.

Andreev scored two singles victories to lift Russia to a 3-2 upset of host Chile in the opening-round tie staged on red clay last month in La Serena. Andreev upset Australian Open finalist Fernando Gonzalez on the opening day of play and then clinched Russia's quarterfinal spot with a 6-2, 6-1, 6-7(1), 6-4, victory over 2004 Olympic gold medallist Nicolas Massu.

Andreev played a pivotal role the last time Russia hosted France in Davis Cup play in pounding Mathieu, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1, in the decisive match to clinch Russia's 3-2 triumph over France in the 2005 quarterfinals.

A year ago, Russia rolled to a 4-1 quarterfinal victory over France on a carpet court in Pau. The Russians would go on to beat the United States on red clay in the Davis Cup semifinals before defeating Argentina in the final.

Igor Andreev and Nikolay Davydenko beat Sebastien Grosjean and Michael Llodra 3-6 7-5 6-3 3-6 6-3 in doubles on Saturday to give Russia a 2-1 lead over France in their Davis Cup world group quarterfinal.

Before Saturday, no Russian or Soviet pair had won against France in Davis Cup doubles, since their first meeting in 1973.

France's Paul-Henri Mathieu had upset world number four Davydenko in the opening singles on Friday before Russia's Mikhail Youzhny levelled the score in a marathon match against Richard Gasquet.

Davydenko replaced Marat Safin in Saturday's line-up, playing Davis Cup doubles for the first time.

"It was a difficult match," Andreev said. "We put up a fight and the French maybe started getting nervous. We had a few chances and we used them."

The French pair launched into the match with zeal, taking five games within 29 minutes.

The Russians stepped up their game and won the second set despite playing from the baseline as Safin watched from the sidelines alongside Friday's hero Youzhny.

At two sets all, the Russians produced a fighting spirit to win the decider and finish the match in three hours 23 minutes.
