A new record: 29 consecutive Quarterfinals...

With his victory over Tursunov today, Federer has reached an amazing 23 consecutive quarterfinals. The last time he failed to reach at least the QF's of an event was at the 2004 Olympics when he lost to Berdych in the Rd 32.

In his past 22 tournaments (since Miami is not over yet), Fed has had these results

17 titles (4 grand slams, 5 TMS, 1 TMC)
2 Runner-ups (2005 TMC-Nalbandian, 2006 Dubai-Nadal)
2 Semi-finalist (2005 AO-Safin, 2005 RG-Nadal)
1 Quarter-finalist (2005 MC-Gasquet)

Total record over that time: 122-5.

^Never before has it been done and I doubt it will ever be done again. This is Grra/Navratilova type dominance on the men's tour when it is deeper than ever before.

And you didn't even count the results from earlier in 2004, which included 2 GS 3 TMS plus Dubai, Halle, and Gastaad titles, not to mention the 2003 TMC ;)

All in all, I guess this has been the most fearsome stretch of dominance humanity has ever witnessed in any professional sport :D

His tournaments to titles ration is out of this world...

from an article about his win over blake:
Federer extended winning streaks of 25 consecutive matches against Americans, 46 matches in a row in the United States and a record 22 in a row in Masters Series events. He has reached the semifinals in his past 13 tournaments.
so now it's 23 master's series wins in a row. :)

I think it was in 2003, against Philippoussis in Hamburg R16 (3-6 6-2 3-6) , then Horna in Roland Garros 1st Rd (6-7(6) 2-6 6-7(3))

Last time Fed lost 3 (and 4, is it possible ?) matches in a row was in 2002, against :
-Stepanek in Gstaad 2nd Rd: 6-3 3-6 2-6
-Canas in Toronto: 6-7(10) 5-7
-Ljubicic in Cincinati: 6-2 4-6 3-6
-Massu in Long Island: 7-6(5) 1-6 3-6

That's 25 straight QF's now. His point total will be at least 7285 come Monday, which will increase the record that he holds. It seems unlikely that anyone will ever top the point total Federer will have at the end of Rome...ever.

Problem is that this ranking system might change, so it doesn't mean so much in the long run. How much points would Laver have got ? Maybe he would hold the record in 69...
anyway his consistency is second to none, he's set the bar higher than Lendl IMO, who was already a consistency freak... well done Rog.

THere has simply never been dominance like this at the men's level. 14 finals in a row in this era? That's 4 slams, 5 TMS events, 1 TMC, and 4 other events. That's mindboggling. 18 by Lendl is the record, but he didn't play in the TMS era and he played a lot of tournaments where you only had to win 1 or 2 matches before you were in the SF's or the F's (the only WCT events).

Amazing.

I sometimes think we're just going by day by day, tournament by tournament and not really fully appreciate what he's actually achieving out there but every now and then I sit back and think of what he'd done past few years and all I think of is...well done Rogi.

But he had worked hard for that, I won't be surprised if he's one of the most hardworking players on tour despite his talents. I remembered him after the phenomenal 2004, chasing Roche around and sacrificed his xmas break past 2 yrs just so he can train with Roche. It's not just about the talents, but his determination and hardworks as well.

Keep going Rogi! :)

Thanks for constantly updating us with such great records :wavey:

That's also 5 straight GS finals in a row.Neely in GM pointed out that this was an open era record.

Roger is now ahead of Laver (1969) (of course) and Agassi ('99 RG - '00 AO) with 4 consecutive GS finals.

Both Borg and Connors have streaks of 6 and 5 GS finals for GS events that they entered. Connors missing the French twice in his run of 6, and both AO and RG in his run of 5. Borg skipped the AO in both his 6 and 5 final streaks.

How fantastic would it be if Roger matched the 6 final streak (or passed it) without skipping a GS event.

It is 19 in a row by Federer I believe. Lendl made 18 in a row as he lost in the rd of 16 at the US OPEN right before the streak and then lost in the rd of 16 at Roland Garros after the streak.

In fact, Lendl's streak contains no grand slams at all.
