Well, he didn't play Barcelona last year, and he has room for improvement in Rome - so maybe, maybe if he gets some good draws, gets some good practice in, gets some good match play, maybe he can have a great clay season! :D

Is there any week of rest in between Monte-Carlo, Barcelona and Rome? I thought he would play in a smaller event (like Valencia) before MC to get some practicing and match-play under his belt, he really needs to be sharp if he wants to hold his ranking up and defend most of his points.

I'm with you guys hoping the clay season will bring the best of him! Good luck Richard! Allez!

hmmm...would have thought he would play a tournament like Munchen too, surprised he is only playing four tourneys...

I too thought that, but it'd be just too much tennis and clay is rather demanding since the points tend to be much longer. Well, perhaps if his clay results don't go as many of us hope (including him, I guess) he might possibly enter St. Poelten. Oops, Portschardt? I completely forgot the name of the new city hosting the event. :(

Is France playing the World Team Cup? :tape:

*julie*
04-03-2006, 05:05 AM
I don't know about the World team cup.

There is no week of rest between the clay tournaments. Last year he didn't play Barcelona because it followed his semi of Montecarlo and he was too tired.
I think it's enough for him to play 4 clay tournaments before RG because clay is very demanding. Of course it's gonna be hard for him to defend all his points but if he plays well in Barcelona and Roma and can go further than the 3rd round in RG he won't loose too much rankings.
We can just hope he will have decent draw in the coming tournaments.

Les Français en stage à Aix-en-Provence
Mardi 11 avril 2006

Training for french players in Aix-en-Provence. I hope Richard will be fit tomorrow.

Grosjean redevient numéro un français
11/04/2006 - 16:12

The next week Richard will not be anymore the number 1 french player

Its so weird not seeing him seeded  At least he's playing though which I'm thrilled to see.

On a happier note, the draw could have been loads worse. Vliegen is dangerous, but its better than drawing Rafael in the first round.

Good luck to Richard! Not the easiest of draws with Stepanek there and Vliegen playing pretty well this year, but nonetheless it's not as horrible as it could be (apart from Federer and Safin being in his section; Federer may pull out and Safin's Safin, so who knows?). Either way, as long as he's fit and uninjured and can last out a couple matches at least, it should be a good sign for the rest of the year.

Edit: Stepanek? Must have gotten Gasquet's draw confused with Baghdatis's. Gasquet possibly has Johansson or Mathieu for a second round. Not too easy either, but I could see harder opposition.

Well, actually, "toll" in German doesn't mean "mad", on the contrary! It means: super, great, awesome... Well he's not criticized at all in this text. ;)

 Well, better to think that he won two matches against nobodies than that he lost shamefully one to another nobody. :p

Is he still playing RG? I haven't seen him play since Indian Wells, so I have no idea where his game is at the moment. What is it that's lacking so much these days that he just can't seem to win a match? I know he must have zero confidence, thus his will desire to win must also be diminishing - it's only natural - for most players. But technically... his serve wasn't so bad last year as it was the last time I saw him play and even then, against Fed, he was holding comfortably in various games with his good first serve. The backhand was definitely lacking the depth he used to put in it and the forehand was shaky and short at best. But I believe it's gotten worse now or what?

He has been injured after the DC against Russia and couldn't serve for a while. But today his first serve % wasn't that bad (61% I think). So, I don't know what to think.

I've no idea, honestly. Maybe the two five-set losses in Davis Cup have scarred him for life. Maybe he's not feeling 100% fit. Maybe he just lacks matchplay.

I wonder about the quality of those first serves though. :o

I honestly thought he was fine after I saw that he had won the second set 6-1, but the third set was really pathetic to say the least. A player like him should be able to keep up the momentum after a dominant second set. He's going to get a good talking-to by Eric, I am very sure...

I don't really know what his problem is but I don't think we need to worry about him being mentally scarred for life by the DC losses, he's still only 19 and trying to figure out how to cope mentally. Hopefully he'll become stronger mentally and realise that everyone loses tough matches, but life goes on. It's a good job Eric's not afraid to tell him the truth!

Yes, I just took a look at the livescoreboard (http://www.sport1.at/pub/ticker/alte_ticker/tennis_at/Main.html), they have detailed comments and it sounds very positive for the 1st set, they say Hrbaty was tense, but everything was also working for Richard and he played great tennis ("Starker Beginn des Franzosen", "Man merkt dem Franzosen die Lockerheit bei fast jedem Schlag an", "Unglaublich.
So: "Kopf hoch", the situation is not that awful! ;)

My tv coverage set in with Melzer 4-0 up and serving, Richard had breakpoints, but could not convert, he did not look too involved in the match.....there was one nice BH return though, then Richard lost his service game and the set, rather unspectacularly. In the break the ATP-trainer massaged Richard's right elbow, my impression of Richard was a mixture of pain and being pissed-off. In the second set, Melzer won his service game to love, Richard too, with some nice shots, but then he retired. And that was the end of it....

He's gonna meet Dr Montalvan (him again... :o ) and see if he can play RG. Eric Deblicker said the injury doesn't seem serious.

From Eurosport.fr

I'm sure my fellow Richard fans in the US are equally pissed off that we haven't got any coverage as Richard wins his first set over Nalbandian. I like Mauresmo, too, but geez, they don't even show the scores properly, nor do they understand the concept of switching between matches.

You're right flibber...no one is showing this match wheras it could be a very great one !
WTH ? I like Grosjean but hé, who thinks he can lose his match ? Just show us Richies's match... could be something
Um perhaps Eurosport just don't have the right to show center court ...

It was the same here in France...
They showed gicquel/kiefer, then mauresmo. :fiery:

Well, Richie seemed to fight well in the 2nd and the 3rd but then... so frustrating he couldn't convert his opportunities in the 3rd.
Then, the 4th was like... expected.

He won't play at Queens but at Halles :p

Actually I'm very happy he won a set, even though I was mad at him after he lost the 3rd set, as he should have won it... I was so sure he would have lost in 3 sets, something like 6/2, 6/3, 6/4 that I was overhappy when I saw he won the 2nd set. :)

 Richard

Didn't see the match, of course, but not a surprising result. I'm happy to see that Richard won set, but disappointed that he had to lose the 4th set 6-0. He has a real knack for losing a set 6-0 in a Grand Slam (Nalbandian at Wimbledon last year, Ginepri at the Open last year). He's got to stop that.

Onto grass :woohoo:

Did anybody who watched the match think that his movement seemed impaired? That seemed kind of odd for an elbow injury, but maybe it can be attributed to lack of match play and fitness.

i am so annoyed. they were talking about this match as the match of the day but they showed kiefer instead then moved to mauresmo and then when we managed to see one set of richie they decide that we all want to see tim henman! yeah right! but they went from the gasquet match when henman was still warming up! these people have no sense!

I finally got to see the match from 3-2 in the third :o :o I've never seem him so impatient! He's usually too tentative and defensive but for some reason he was smacking the ball into the net without thinking from the end of the third set onwards. Maybe he had a dinner date with Tati who was in the crowd with Forget. :cuckoo:

Yesterday they didn't show Richard's match against Nalby on France2 whereas today they cancelled some programs just to show the end of the match of Monfils against Norman...

Richard can not say that he feels the pressure from the medias and the french crowd now. :o
