Ashley Harkleroad has a new sparkle these days and has reason to smile: "Pebbles" has found her Bam Bam. The 18-year-old Harkleroad is engaged to boyfriend and fellow tennis pro Alex Bogomolov, Jr. of Miami. A happy Harkleroad, nicknamed "Pebbles" because she's from Flintstone, Georgia, visited the Orange Bowl sporting her diamond engagement ring that sparkled in the sunlight.
The 20-year-old Bogomolov, who was born in Moscow, and has lived in Miami for years, is named after his father, who was also a tennis pro. Bogomolov, Jr. and Harkleroad have known each other since their junior days.
The pair played mixed doubles together at the U.S. Open where they lost in the opening round to Chris Haggard and Eleni Daniilidou, 6-3, 7-6(6).
As a wild card ranked No. 101, Harkleroad upset three top 20 players — beating ninth-seeded Elena Bovina, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round, thrashing 11th-seeded Meghann Shaughnessy by the same score in the third round before upsetting ninth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova, 6-2, 6-1 — to reach the semifinals in Charleston where she fell to Justine Henin-Hardenne.
The blonde baseliner's performance at Charleston was a prelude of a victory to come over Hantuchova.
On kid's day at Roland Garros, the youthful Harkleroad came of age to edge the ninth-seeded Hantuchova, 7-6(2), 4-6, 9-7 in a dramatic duel that spanned more than three hours and stretched the nerves of both players.
Harkleroad is currently ranked No. 52, while Bogomolov, Jr. is ranked No. 115. Bogomolov played primarily on the Challenger circuit last season, winning Forest Hills, Tiburon and Leon
