Mac says "Smarten up"

Is John McEnroe becoming a dinosaur? He tends to think so these days, having asked Wimbledon to set the standard when it comes to player attire. For years he's tried to live up to his rebel reputation, but now has asked professional players to smarten up. James Buddell reports.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion dislikes in particular, the sleeveless shirts worn by popular players James Blake, Max Mirnyi and Carlos Moya.

Speaking at the Lawn Tennis Writers' Association annual dinner, held at the All England Club on Tuesday, McEnroe highlighted his shock that a bastion of tradition - who sticks to a strict all-white rule - should wear shirts more accustomed to the gym.

"I think I might be turning into a bit of a dinosaur.

"Moya's a great looking guy. I wish I had muscles like him, but what happens next? Are you going to get someone without a clothing contract who has a great chest and decides to play without a shirt!"

"Those shirts just didn't seem right to me at Wimbledon. Maybe I'm becoming an old fogey - traditional. I'm considered a rebel but I find it shocking that Wimbledon, of all places, allowed something like that. They looked like one of my sweatshirts after they've got wrinkled because of all the travel."

Earlier this year tennis' new-style attire had already been permitted by Australian and French Open championships, so Wimbledon's chief executive Christopher Gorringe felt powerless in barring them.

The debate will be sure to continue.

I think McEnroe may be gay, I remember that in his biography he would say weird disturbing things like Borg looked like a viking God, Gerulaitis looked amazing shirtless and I admired the hairy chest of Vilas.

Really hated the sleeveless shirts when I first saw them, but the dark ones look quite nice (on Moya and Lopez for instance!). What I really detest is baggy shorts....I'm sure Mac has commented on those recently, too.

From a review of his autobiography

http://books.guardian.co.uk/reviews/sportandleisure/0,6121,746516,00.html

"On the other hand, McEnroe does have an inadvertently amusing line in eyeing up the physical charms of his competitors, which, from anyone less demonstrably heterosexual (six anklebiters and counting) might cause one to raise an eyebrow. 'I remember Vitas bulging out of his clothes, and sweating... and Nastase. Those guys looked incredible... I thought [Borg] was magical - like some kind of Viking god... I can't explain, exactly... the way he looked - long, tan legs, wide shoulders.'

Anyone else? Oh, yes - 'I liked Guillermo Vilas, the Bull of the Pampas, early on. His look was great - the big, hairy chest, the muscular thighs, the flowing hair. There was something beautiful about him.'

Anyway, if the big, hairy chest of the Bull of the Pampas didn't lead to anything much, that might well be because McEnroe was saving himself for Tatum O'Neal. By that point, of course, his career on court was more or less over - 'Where is Borg? I thought. Who in God's name is Anders Jarryd, and what is he doing with a match point against me?'"

lmao... he's currently married though :)

I like it when a guy is comfortable enough with his sexuality to be able to comment on other guys' looks. Why is it ok for a female to say another female is pretty but if a guy says it he gets gay jokes?

Sayin pretty or handsome is different.
There McEnroe is lusting over his ex-colleagues.

If Steffi writes in her autobiography, I tought Mary Pierce was magical, she had great legs, blonde hair, lovely skin and big firm breasts I would think Steffi is a lesbian.

It's nice to see that John can openly admire men. He is so right about the men of that era. My god they were handsome and you could actually see their bodies. They weren't swathed in fabric that apparently could double as a tent for a bedouin family.

Probably.
I think I read here that Becker said once, when Schrichaphan was shirtless , look at that body! every man wants to have a body like that one!

or something like that.

Yep, that was during commentary of the Wimbledon 4th round against Roddick. But that just shows Becker's preoccupation with physical appearance, you could hardly suggest he's gay after the amount of conquests he's had over the years. Mr Boris "men are not made for monogamy" Becker? I don't think so.
