An Andy Post from the past (May 2001)

I found this post from another site, and thought it interesting to post here too.

A long time ago, when Andy used to post on an unofficial website, someone posted something very disparaging about Jim Courier, saying he lacked talent and just got lucky to win 4 slams. Andy normally wouldn't respond directly to posts, but he took that one head-on, in May 2001. Here it is, as I think it's very appropo this discussion:

From: sfxdonut Date: Wed May 9, 2001 1:17 pm Subject: courier not talented ?

I read this post and was astounded. i know that i normally don't write in with opinions on anything, but i have to step in here. jim courier is a 4 time grand slam champion and was number one in the world for the better part of two years. now to make a statement like that about a great champion is unbeleviable and doesn't show much knowledge about the game. i think it is especially sad to rip someone who was so loyal to his country in participating in davis cup and other forms of team compeptition. it seems as if u enjoy ripping people unjustly. it might be true that courier was not a naturally gifted as agassi and sampras or some other players but that makes his accomplishments even more impressive. anyways to everyone in the club hello and i hope all is well. i am in athens GA right now with my brother and will be in new york for couple days before going home. talk to u guys soon

sincerely, andy roddick

I'm a huge Jim Courier fan, and I really liked what Andy said about his accomplisments being even more impressive given what he had to do to get them. Perhaps the same can be said of Andy, too, although I think he's more talented than many of you give him credit for.

Boy, this was a blast from the past. Always nice to talk about Jim Courier, though.

I agree with the poster and I agree with Andy. I wished I could have seen Courier during his prime.

It's also cool to see Andy posting in threads (non-journal updates), even though it's from awhile ago.

cool, thanks for posting that.

I know James Blake has also named Courier as a role model of his.

no prob

Jim was so close to winning Wimbledon one year too. I think it was that Wimby final that devastated him so much he never quite recovered and his career started to go south.

Where do you guys this stuff? That was very cool of Andy to stand up for Jim Courier (who always gets a bum rap, for some reason).

Thanks for posting that jackson!

really? I always liked Jim (maybe b/c he's a redhead and so is my mom so I was brainwashed to love redheads at a very young age :p)

Too much brainwashing going on at home then. ;)

yea.... apparently my dad was disappointed when I was born and I got more of his hair color genes (Brown) than hers (red)

He's dissapointed just because you have more of his color hair? Um, ok?

my dad likes redheads, he wanted his only child to be one, too LOL

I've seen his posts on that yahoo group.

My brother is a redhead.

I'm not sure I get the whole redhead thing.

I like dark chocolate brown eyes and any color of brown hair. Sometimes, a blond is cute (Stefan! Bjorn! Jonas!) but generally, I don't like them. (Boris. David. )

Wow, Jace, thanks for the post, that was just great! I like Jim a lot, too, and I agree with you on the Andy analogy. :D

Jim is overlooked too often... when you look at his accomplishments, they are seriously impressive.

06-21-2005, 03:16 AM
Andy probably posted that bit about Jim Courier in this Yahoo! group:

Thanks for posting that! :yeah:

Actually I saw Andy post something in here the other day...

He made that thread about himself not getting his serve broken the whole job ass.

06-21-2005, 02:23 PM
well if i was a tennis star i would go on menstennisforums and read.

Andy should've been the troll that created the 1 year-old jerk GM thread.
The mockery was old & repetitive. Kind of like Sjengster.

Hehe, that analogy actually wasn't was part of what I copied from another forum ;) But you're welcome. :)

I"ll edit my first post to make it clearer which part was copied/quoted from that site (which quotes Andy, lol) :)
