Oh, I'd love to see him play Safin in the 4th round! We would see if the tables have turned since the last time they played. ;)

Generally I think that right now Jarkko needs to get more matches against the very top players in the world, more than anything else. He needs to find a way to win those matches, and then he'll be a real contender in Grand Slams :yeah:

For those who missed the chat here's the whole thing:

Chat with Jarkko Nieminen

Welcome to The Show! On Tuesday, tennis player Jarkko Nieminen will stop by to chat after his doubles match in Indian Wells.
Nieminen is through to the final 16 of the Pacific Life Open, the ATP Masters Series event in Indian Wells, California. He will play Marat Safin for a spot in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The native of Finland came into this week with a career-high tying INDESIT ATP Ranking of No. 24. He won the title in Auckland in January, giving him his first career title in his fifth final. Last summer, he posted his best career Grand Slam result with a run to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open where he lost to Lleyton Hewitt in five sets.

Send your questions in for Jarkko now, then join him at 3:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday for his answers.

Buzzmaster: (3:03 PM ET ) Jarkko's match at Indian Wells ran a little long so he'll be joining us at 3:30...Keep those questions coming!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matthew (Omaha): wierd..................Jarkko's match was yesterday and he isn't scheduled to play today.........so why is he late??

Buzzmaster: (3:26 PM ET ) Doubles match..

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:30 PM ET ) I'm here and ready to go!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stella : Are you looking forward to the new Hawk-eye replay? Are the players generally optimistic or unhappy about it?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:31 PM ET ) I think it is exciting. It brings some extra excitement to the game. I'm interested to see how it will work. I think most players feel the same way.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Juho Sorvali: Helsinki Finland: Do you think you can get the best of you (maybe top-10 in the world) without a coach?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:33 PM ET ) The thing is that I have had a coach traveling with me before part time and I had a full time coach as well for awhile. Last year I didn't have a coach and had my best showing. I was improving all the time. I got my first title this year so I'm playing better and better all the time. I know myself pretty well so I have no coach right now but that's not to say I won't have one in the future. I'm just the kind of person that I don't need to be pushed to practice. I like to practice on my own and what I'm doing seems to be working.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rose (Los Angeles): Now that you've won your first title, what other goals do you have?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:34 PM ET ) Of course I am always trying to improve my game and just win more and bigger titles. I would like to win a Masters next. I just want to keep winning titles!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John Houston, Texas: You have had a lot of success in doubles, what do you think of McEnroe's doubles win? Would you pick on him in a match? Do you try to pick off people with your overheads in a match?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:35 PM ET ) I'm not surprised at all by his success. He has been playing tennis a lot since he retired. If he hadn't played at all for 8 years, it would be a surprise. But he is a very fit guy and has been playing regularly. That's why he can still have success out there.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bradley J. Davis (Manchester, Iowa, USA, World): What's your favorite sport other than tennis?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:36 PM ET ) I like badminton. My wife plays it. Ice hockey and soccer also are favorites of mine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Badfan: Who's the best athlete? you or your wife?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:36 PM ET ) Ha! That's tough to compare! I can't win a point in badminton agains her. But I move better on the tennis court!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Todd (Boston): I know you'd probably not talk about other players, but I've played recreationally for years and I can't find any fundamental flaws in Roger Federer's game. Is he the best you've ever seen?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:38 PM ET ) It's very difficult to find a flaw. I played him last year in Bangkok semifinals and he is just such a complete player. Even on a bad day, he is just so good. That's why he can beat anyone. I have played him many times and never have beaten him.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Katia (Monaco): What do you consider as your best shot? if you could have someone else's shot, what would it be?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:39 PM ET ) When I play well I return really well. But I would say my groundstrokes are probably my best. My backhand is also really good. I wouldn't mind having Federer's forehand!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lee -Manchester, CT: What is are the top 5 songs on your Ipod right now?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:40 PM ET ) I have an Ipod. I am a bad singer but I listen to it all the time. I listen to almost all kinds of music. Mostly rock. I like faster, heavier music. I listen to that before matches. I have everything from Elvis to Metallica.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tom (DC): Jarkko, is it true that you only eat oranges on the day of a match?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:40 PM ET ) Not true! Where did you hear that?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seb: I read your ATP blog, it was really intersting to learn a few thing about the life of a tennis pro. Will you do it again if you can? oh and just being curious, did you type your entries yourself? ;-)

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:41 PM ET ) I don't know. It was nice to do it. I would like to do it again. They started that this year and they take a different player every week. But I would do it again if they asked.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ginny, Miami, FL: What do you miss most about Finland? And what are some of your favorite Finnish foods?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:42 PM ET ) I miss the sauna! We have very good dark bread and Finnish chocolates!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
jackieglover (parts unknown): Hi Jarkko. Great play so far this year. Onto tomorrow's match with Marat, you've only beaten him once in six matches and he's taken the last 5, including all 4 on hardcourts, but several of those matches have been pretty close. Have you seen anything different from Marat's game since his return that you could try to attack or exploit? Good luck tomorrow and for the rest of the tournament.

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:44 PM ET ) We have had many tight matches. I beat him once on clay. I had two match points against him here last year. We played four tight sets in Australia two years ago. I think he is very hungry at the moment. He hasn't played for awhile and has been practicing a lot. He is really enjoying the game right now. I think he is even hungrier than before. He's a dangerous player.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lola (Paris): What do you do on a day off? Who are the nicest players on the tour?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:44 PM ET ) If I'm in a nice city, I try to go and look around the city a bit. I read a lot and go to movies. Sometimes I just listen to music. Of course I also practice. But I try to take my thoughts away from tennis when I can.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matthew, Hazlet Nj: When did you start getting really into tennis? And when do you think you would have to start playing tennis to be able to have a shot at being a pro?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:46 PM ET ) I started when I was 4! I played about 10 sports growing up. I liked tennis so much that I had to keep stopping other sports the more I got into tennis. My results got better and better every year. I won the Boys US Open in '99 and really believed at that point I could go to the top.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jill (Boston): Hi Jarkko, what's your favorite and least favorite things about being a pro tennis player?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:47 PM ET ) Not too many bad things! We travel a lot which I see as a positive. I get to see so many cultures and different people. But you do miss your family and friends. The best part is obviously getting to play tennis all the time!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alyce, Woburn, MA: Terve! Who are some of your tennis role models? Also, what are some of your favorite U.S. Sports teams?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:48 PM ET ) My tennis role model was Bjorn Borg and Boris Becker. Later on it was Pete Sampras. I used to follow the NBA and NHL but not so much NBA anymore. I still watch NHL because I really like ice hockey.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DashaZ: Are you sad that to be basically the only finnish player on tour? Are there any young players that might come after you?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:49 PM ET ) Laine is on the women's tour and she is one to watch. But yes, I'm the only guy. I'm used to it. Since I came to Top 100 I have been the only one. I'm a so-so guy so I get to know everyone and have lots of friends on the tour.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Robby V. (Switzerland): Hi, what is your favorite movie and if you could be only one actor in the world who would it be? Tanks and bye and good luck in tennis.

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:51 PM ET ) I'm watching the first season of 24 right now and it is really good. I'm planning to go to the cinema after this chat! Maybe Munich? As for which actor, I'm happy to be me!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ritva, Helsinki, Finland: Have you had chance to chat with Emma Laine there in Indian Wells? :)

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:52 PM ET ) Yes. Of course. She is still playing. In the fourth round today.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aladin (Danslalampe): Who is more famous in Finland? You or your wife?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:52 PM ET ) I am! The media follows tennis more than badminton. So I would say me. But I woudn't say I have better achievements. She has achieved a lot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Miko Suave - Boulder, CO: Will you ever play mixed doubles?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:53 PM ET ) Never played mixed, I would like to try it sometime.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coiffeur: Can you make a comment on Safin's hair? (I promise It will remain a secret between you and me)

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:54 PM ET ) It's long. He's has a lot of hair. That's my comment.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rose (Los Angeles): What are some of your favorite places to travel when you're on the tour?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:55 PM ET ) New York. Melbourne. Tokyo. Rome. Barcelona. Madrid. Those are pretty good!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Troof Philly, PA: If you could play against anyone for one match and one match only, who would it be? Arthur Ashe?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:56 PM ET ) That would be great! Any great champion from the past would be great to play against. I would love to play Borg as well just because he was my idol.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Russ (Dyersville): Who's your pick to win the NCAA Tournament?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:56 PM ET ) I don't follow college. Just NBA.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fritz (La Jolla, CA): What is your position on wearing hats during matches? Personally, I prefer a headband.

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:57 PM ET ) That doesn't bother me. I wear them sometimes because it is so sunny.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
J sizzle (Phoenix, AZ): How closely did you watch the amazing run the Finnish hockey team had in this years olympics?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:58 PM ET ) I tried to watch as many games as I could. I followed them very closely. I saw the loss against Sweden. It was painful.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Todd (Boston): What's your favorite surface to play on? Favorite venue?

Jarkko Nieminen : (3:59 PM ET ) I don't really have a favorite. I usually play my best tennis on slow hardcourts. But I'm pretty much an all-around player that can play on all surfaces.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aorgwuo (GS): What's your favorite Grand Slam tournament and why?

Jarkko Nieminen : (4:00 PM ET ) That's tough. It used to be Australia but I like the other three more and more. I like them all now. I used to like Australia the best just because of the weather, the tournament, the people were so friendly, the city is great. It's also a nice time to go to Australia from a cold winter in Finland.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RaleurTatar: Do you think there are too many tournaments? Are you worried about all the injuries?

Jarkko Nieminen : (4:01 PM ET ) We saw a lot of top players get injured last season so yes, maybe a shorter season would help. Maybe a few short breaks during the year so players could rest up. That would probably be good.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joe (Camarillo, CA): If you could play any other professional sport, what would it be?

Jarkko Nieminen : (4:02 PM ET ) I'm really into badminton now because of my wife. She is a pro. It's very different from tennis but also quite similar. I also played soccer and ice hockey when I was younger.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saumon: you should watch Brokeback Mountain if you havent seen it yet! btw I read in your blog you're a "Lost" fan, I love it too!

Jarkko Nieminen : (4:03 PM ET ) Yes, I want to see that one also. If I don't see it today, I will see it later.

Sure the record doesn't look good. But Jarkko is playing the best tennis of his life and Marat is still coming back from the injury. There must be some lapses in his game, so Jarkko needs to be patient out there tonight and not panic.

I'm expecting Jarkko to win at least one set, but I believe he has a chance to go all the way! Should be a great match, because Jarkko is nowadays performing better and better against the big stars ;)

I am sooo nervous about this match against Paradorn. :tape:

It's such a huge match again for Jarkko, and so difficult because it's the one he should win. It's like the match against Verdasco in USO, where there was the QF spot at stake. Now it's SF in a TMS tournament, and we can be sure Srichaphan is not gonna give it as easy as Verdasco did!

Still, analytically thinking, Jarkko should come out on top. His game suits quite well playing Paradorn as he can mix the pace and wait for the unforced errors or chances to pass his opponent. But the Thai has found his game and it's probably going to be really tight. Normally Jarkko is my favorite in tight matches, but now I'm afraid of Paradorn's new-found Buddhist inner peace. The guy is meditating on the court and NOTHING seems to trouble him! Scary. :scared:

I am sure Finnish commentators still know more than Polish ones do  Things will be good!

And your TV coverage reminds me when Adam Małysz was starting doing good in ski-jumping.... The i-want-it-now-i-can-pay-much-for-stream ... their contract with ITF finished the year before Małysz startd really jumping... and when not shown, the so-called Małysz-mania bloomed and TV officials were so insisted on millions e-mails from people to show ski-jumping, they had to pay looooaaaads of money for that.... good that Adam won 3 times title in a row, they still were ahead with money from commercials

:haha: :haha: :haha:

Tennis is 100 times smaller in Finland than Ski Jumping in Poland when Malysz started to jump well. But we also have good commentators in Finland who know about tennis. (Jari Hedman) Sport Channel which showed Jarkko's game is rather new Channel and they don't ordinary anything but Masters-Series semi-finals and finals.

Nathaliia
03-17-2006, 06:43 PM
Now I see I wrote ITF instead of FIS *blush*

Actually, ski-jumping was shown for many years, I remember watching it since I was a small child, but few people were watching it haha.... that's why when contract finished (Polish jumpers were :smash: ) they didn't make it longer, so no ski-jumping on TV, and then Małysz started to JUMP and people almost made marches as he was winning event after event and our TV didn't show it :haha:

prepare for this in Finland if Jarkko wins a slam

PS. Now it's the same with biathlon and Sikora, plus cross country and Justyna Kowalczyk. They paid for 20 years when Poland had no competitors, and now our people are making top five and we hear it from the news.

IMO, this is exactly what Jarkko needs, a chance to try out his skills against a top player and upset him. I think Jarkko's going to be inspired to play against James.

Of course, ranking-wise, it would be better to have an easy draw and then maybe lose to one of Rochus brothers in 4th round/QF :p but in the longer run he needs these matches against the top 10 players. I'm excited already thinking about the match!! Hopefully they both make it!

All in all, not a bad trip to America for Jarkko, was it? He made his best TMS result ever by reaching the QF in Indian Wells and played solid in Miami as well. What I like about Jarkko's play lately is the fact that he seems to be playing well in the important tournaments, and he's not losing to "nobodies" on these occasions. If he can keep this confidence level up and play by his ranking, it will be interesting to see what happens on clay courts.

I know this one! He did play singles! And even in Polish futures events :D But he discovered a doubles soul inside, he is not too young so far and surely making more money in ATP doubs than ITF singles. This is him (first on the left) Sopot 2005

http://nathaliia.myphotoalbum.com/view_photo.php?full=1&set_albumName=album02&id=f11

He's a nice guy... I would say a typical Swede... And he's listening to Ipod almost all the time. He's got a little weird sense of humour and cannot find out how to open a fridge with mineral water on court so my friend had to show him

I saw him match only once... he played doubs with Wassen and they were seeded 4 and they lost to Acasuso and... his coach :tape:

Chucho's coach was practising the serve in game breaks - umpire was only laughing.

Hi Andrew! You should reach Vierumäki by bus from Tampere (150 km to the east). First take a bus to Lahti and change there for another which stops at Vierumäki. Here are the latter buses http://www.matkahuolto.info/index.jsp?lang=en. www.matkahuolto.fi gives you the other timetables too and serves you in English. Well at least he wasn't losing to Scoville Jenkins this time around :)

Usually Jarkko ups his game in the Grand Slams (actually, I can't remember him being upset too often on Slams, maybe the Sluiter match from RG this year is the only example)

el güero
08-25-2006, 08:24 AM
Jarkko's "bad" losses in Grand Slams are few, indeed. Last year's loss to Igor Andreev in the French Open 2nd Round, after coming through the quallies and beating Agassi, would probably qualify for a bad loss. I'd say the only other one would be against Fernando Vicente in USO 2002. Jarkko had had a pretty good American hard court season and was expected to win against Vicente. Later he said having felt really weak on court.

So overall, Jarkko is a strong GS player. The only problem here is that a loss to Malisse here would NOT be a "bad" loss. In fact the X-man goes to the match as a favorite. :(

J-5
08-25-2006, 01:31 PM
It's very hard to believe that Jarkko got the worst possible opponent in the first round of the US Open, where he must recover last years QF points. All we can do is to hope that Jarkko is on fire against X-man. But I have this fear that the form that Jarkko used to have these last weeks, won't be enough, he just have to improve his game now.

Quite a difficult question to answer.. ;) I'd say the X-man is a top 20 player on hard courts at the moment, and Jarkko hasn't beaten any top 20 players this year. So the loss to Malisse was to be expected, though the match was surprisingly one-sided.

Jarkko was down 1-6 1-3...

and finally won 1-6 6-4 6-4

after blowing a 5-1 lead in the 3rd

what a crazy match, Jarkko must be a lot better from the start against Gasquet in R32

Pretty terrible match apart from that good comeback. He really needs more matches and first of all some good wins at the moment. Good luck against Richie anyway Jarkko! :yeah:
