I've never started a cheering thread before, but I was getting way too depressed with the hashing and re-hashing of the Nadal match. On to bigger and better things.

I don't believe that any player has ever won a TMS event three years in a row since the Super 9/TMS series started. Let's hope that Roger becomes the first.

GO ROGER!

Roger, if you're going to lose - do it in the early rounds :o

rofe

Quite frankly, I hope he wins but gets pushed really hard so that he doesn't take anything for granted. He should then withdraw from Miami so that he is really focussed during the clay season for obvious reasons.

Actually, he shouldn't because unlike Sampras he won't recover that well for the next match. He will really get down on himself if he starts losing early.

May I conclude that gradually becoming Rafa's bitch does him a world of good...? :o

Why would anyone want him to lose early? :retard: Think if he had lost early in Dubai and then Rafa went on to win the tournament? Would you be feeling any better? I don't think so. And the news headlines would be even worse. This fear of Nadal is silly. :silly: Besides if Nadal gets a good hc player like James Blake on his side of the draw I think he could be upset. He probably won't have the crowd support like he did in Dubai and will have in Miami.

IMHO I dont think Roger has been playing well since Cincy last year. Initially I thought it was because of the layoff, but even in the final against Agassi he didnt play anywhere near his best level. I just hope he can find his form again, he does have a lot of points to defend and everyone is gunning for him at the moment.

Good luck Rogi :bounce: , I just want to see that fire again that I think is missing a little bit

Yes, about 8 years ago. My wife's family was born in India so we travel to the "motherland" every so often. Incredible place.

Now, if you REALLY feel to need to vent and send out negative vibes, just think about this peaceful place and all will be good. ;-)

I wondered about your av as well Rogiman. I've never been to see the Golden Temple though I've heard great things about it-- my visits to India are usually really short, and restricted to visiting family in Chennai. I would really love to see more of the country some day! :)

Rofe, I visited Chennai (Madras) and the thing that I remember most was how hot it was. It would be like 94 degrees in the afternoon and then 83 when we went to sleep. Needless to say, it was difficult to sleep when the air conditioning broke down at our hotel. :)

I got PM from Silvy :)

I have also news for you all.

Silvy will post later if she'll be able to do that (I guess she doesn't have much time). She's fine, very excited and can't wait for tomorrow (she's going to Indian Wells).

She sends love to all of you :)

IMPORTANT !!
During the match look for big Argentina flag saying "Vamos Roger. Silvy, Argentina" when the audience will be shown :)

* actually I see Silvy now ;)

Sjengster
03-07-2006, 07:27 PM
I hope she won't get any stick from her compatriots in the crowd if Roger ends up playing an Argentinian  (which he has done the last two years: Chela in 04, Canas last year). But still, good for her to be there. I want to be at a required event someday and see Federer in the flesh, so to speak. Come to think of it, I should probably fork out the money for that little event 90 minutes train ride away from me that he's done quite well at in the last few years. :p

And the heat is compounded by the incredible humidity. Suffice to say, you have to live there a few years to get used to it.

NYCtennisfan

The draw is out and Roger will be playing either Calleri or Massu after a 1st round bye.

Pretty good draw, obviously there are awkward floaters like Rusedski and Horna early on, and indeed Massu and Calleri are both in good nick at the moment, especially Massu, but Ljubicic or Kiefer in the quarters and then Nalbandian in the semis seem like the major obstacles. Nadal has Roddick/Hewitt/Berdych/Baghdatis/Agassi/Haas/Blake in his half, although it's fairly obvious he wouldn't play more than two of them.

NYCtennisfan
03-07-2006, 09:28 PM
Pretty good draw for Roger. It'll be interesting to see if Richie is bringing anything resembling his A game to this tournament. Other than that, I see a good battle with Ivan in the QF's, and someone other than Nalbandian in the SF. I think the long layoff may hurt Nalbandian.

Sjengster
03-07-2006, 09:36 PM
The ATP site makes a good point that hadn't occurred to me, which is that Nalbandian will be trying to maintain a four-year tradition of the reigning TMC champion taking the IW title the following year. The difference is, the other two (Hewitt and Federer) have both been Slam winners and no. 1s at the time they won their titles in the desert, while Nalbandian's record here is pretty poor. Mind you, so was Federer's before 2004, and I never count out Dave if he gets on a roll. One match at a time, as they say.... for a start, Calleri or Massu in the first match will offer completely different challenges considering their contrasting styles of play.

mangoes
03-08-2006, 12:46 AM
Berdych (if he screws his head on correctly), Haas and Blake are, imo, the only players that can offer a real threat to Nadal. I think Agassi  isn't physically capable of making it to the Semifinals. I think Roddick is hearing the beginning bars of the "fat :wavey: lady's" song. And Hewitt, don't know if he is coming or going

Roger should put down his pressure, in fact, 2006 is the best start!

Compare the Race points / W-L of Roger in 2004 - 2006 in the same period as now! (Before IW AMS)

2004 (272 / 17-1)
Australian Open - W (200)
Davis Cup - 2 win (0)
Rotterdam - QF (12)
Dubai - W (60)

2005 (250 / 20-1)
Doha - W (50)
Australian Open - SF (90)
Rotterdam - W (50)
Dubai - W (60)

2006 (292 / 16-1)
Doha - W (50)
Australian Open - W (200)
Dubai - F (42)

I don't think Nadal will play all the tournaments he played in 2005.

RonE

Silvy, I love that flag! So creative. Give a huge cheer for Roger and if you talk to him tell him we are eagerly expecting him to return from the butcher shop with the finest cuts of pork he can make :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I am pretty happy with Roger's draw- Gasquet, Ljubicic and Nalbandian will be a great challenge leading to a potential final clash with Nadal. He needs to have a fire under his arse ignited, and maybe some stiff tough competition will bring out the best in him.

Go Roger!!!!!!

OMG: when will this tourney finally start? This long build up is ridiculous!Well because it's a combined event and the draws are bigger it the seeds don't start right away the following week. I see Davenport and Dementieva think the WTA should follow the ATP and have more mandatory tournaments. Six of the top 10 womens players aren't playing in IW. Some just resting up for Miami. I'd love to see something similar to the masters series for women. In fact, I think it would be cool if they could create more combined events like IW and Miami and make them required for top players. I think you'd get better media/TV coverage.

Thank god Roger plays on Sunday. The weather out here is absoluetly horrible right now. Sunday won't be very warm, but at least there won't be rain. I'm kind of surprised though that Andy Roddick is playing today because ESPN2 doesn't start their coverage until Sunday. I think TTC has coverage today but not as many people get that channel. Looks like Roger, Rafa and Andre will be playing tomorrow. I wonder which one will get the prime time slot?

COMMENTARY
A Celebrity Who Takes the Clicking, Keeps On Ticking
By Bill Dwyre, Times Staff Writer
March 11, 2006

In a celebrity-starved world, Roger Federer gets tennis in the game. He makes the racket for his sport, just as Tiger Woods is the driver for his.

Even if rain hadn't disrupted most of the matches Friday at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, Federer still would have been the big show. And he won't even play until Sunday.

Russian Marat Safin, one of the best players in the world, the man who beat Federer in the 2005 Australian Open final, and an interesting, charismatic person, won a match and barely created a ripple.

American Lindsay Davenport, a local star from Laguna Beach, long a No. 1 player, winner of three titles in Grand Slam events and a friendly, engaging person, blasted another young American off the court in a 6-0, 6-0 whipping and barely created a ripple.

Federer meandered into a press gathering, dressed in a drab gray sweatshirt and dirty jeans, hair slightly disheveled. And suddenly, you had the Beatles.

It was standing room only. From all corners, cameras buzzed, whirred and clicked. Federer smiles. Buzz, whir, click. Federer gestures. Buzz, whir, click.

It was 15 minutes of "Access Hollywood" and, as an afterthought, some questions about tennis.

There are a couple of dozen mainstream newspapers and broadcast outlets from the desert to Los Angeles, and there were twice that many bodies in the room. Federer is far from a local story. His attraction is both Tennis magazine and People magazine. He is from Switzerland, but tennis has given him to the world. And he has given back, willingly and comfortably.

His results alone might put him on his pedestal.

When he won the Australian Open in January, it was his seventh Grand Slam title. At 24, he's already halfway to Pete Sampras' record.

More astounding, though, is what he has done since the beginning of 2004. In that span, his record is 117-11. He has won 24 tour titles, including six of the last nine Grand Slam events, and recently passed Bjorn Borg for fifth place for length of stay at No. 1, currently 110 weeks.

Yet he has remained accessible, comfortable with his role as the guy wearing the crown. He is not a great quote, but he is not dull. He has a presence, not a swagger.

Perhaps the most interesting/insightful thing he said Friday was that, for a while, when somebody had a winning record against him, he took it personally.

"I thought they were not nice people," he said, smiling over his own pettiness. "I look at things more relaxed now."

Tour officials say they have never had anybody more willing to promote the game, more willing to cooperate with tournament officials or sponsors or reporters from pint-sized papers or 10-watt stations. While he is doing that, he maintains a measure of realism and humility.

"I'm excited" to be playing here, he said, "but at the same time, I feel the pressure, of course."

After the English version of his news conference ended, he did another in German. When you are Roger Federer, the globe is your stage.

Its real nice to read that Roger seems to have become popular in the US - about time too! He is well loved around the world and I've just never been able to understand why the Americans (not all) haven't been able to see what the rest of the world sees - a thoroughly nice, decent, courteous young man who's a credit to his parents and the sport he plays.

He doesn't have to hate Nadal neither does he have to like him. But enough of the niceness. The boy is nice off court but dont tell me he wont want the #1 though he has been feigning that it is far from me. I am not that deceived. Roger needs to put the clamp down on him mentally and take that stupid fight out of him like he did to Hewitt. He needs to stop praising the boy, especially not after messing up the last match.

On the other hand, if Roger weren't so pleasant to Nadal, can you imagine the headlines and spins journalists would put on their relationship and matches. I think Roger is mindful of feeding those that may be looking for a gossip filled story to further build the hype surrounding what most, in the media, would like to see as the next great rivalry in tennis.

federer was never buddies with nabs...nothing erupted there.

i think its embarassing that federer is getting schooled by nadal. his excuses are becoming quite classic. lefty spin, phillipe chatrier court, but heck what does an armchair expert like me know.

getting beat by a contemporary is one thing. But when you are at the top of your game as he says, its a little, uhm, how should i say silly.

I really believe that Roger will get the better of Rafa. It's a new challenge for Roger that he will overcome.............something to break the boredom at the top   Seriously, I think Roger is capable of beating Nadal, even on clay, and I think Roger knows that too.

Marketing:
Nalbandian has never been the no. 2 player aggressively chasing the no. 1 player Roger. Nalbandian isn't as popular as Rafa. Frankly, it's all about marketing for the media and creating hype around tennis. If a rivalry can develop between Roger and Rafa.........and one seems to be........then, all the better for the tennis hype and marketing. If the rivalry isn't a pleasant one, it becomes even more interesting (human nature) to a lot of people, moreso the casual tennis fan. We like Roger and as devoted tennis fans, this may seem trival to a lot of us. But to those marketing tennis and to the journalist/media.......a rivalry between Roger and Rafa with a dash of bad blood is a story written in gold.

Oh, I know, the shame of it. Roger and Roger's fans are all wearing dark glasses, caps pulled down, the Swiss flag burnt, or the white cross filled in with black. Roger's too scared to turn up to practice and has to be carried weeping and screaming on to court. And who is this kid, anyway, only came on the tour last year and had a few lucky wins. Needs to bulk up a bit though. How dare he hand out bagels to the World #1, no match even close, Roger can't even get the ball back. Yes, Roger is a laughing stock and his record counts for nothing. Stands no chance against this upstart punk :(

NYCtennisfan

Dominant on serve except for two games. It is a good bet to believe that Federer will struggle on serve after he has a return game with some wasted break points. Almost every single time this happens. Other than those two games, he completely dominated on serve. He gave up 15 points on serve in 11 serve games and 5 service points in the TB.

OTOH, he struggled on the return games for an entire set against Massu so he has to work on that.

Sjengster

I've been thinking that for about three years - I don't think he's going to change in that department. Still, I'm not going to whinge about this performance, it seems good enough for an opening round against a man who is obviously playing well of late and already had a match under his belt.

About struggling after he wastes some break point opportunities? Yep. This has been going on for a while, and has really been prevalent since Wimby of last year.

All in all, I would rather have Fed struggle on his return games then to be broken 2, 3, or 4 times and give up 10 break point opportunities. His return game always picks up as the tourny goes along.

Nah, just in general about battening down the hatches and more particularly, about taking breakpoint chances. I mean tonight was nothing, when you've sat through the Rome 03 final vs Mantilla (3/17) and the US Open 03 encounter with Blake (3/25), then everything else afterwards is peanuts.

I did say in GM, this isn't a bad result at all given Massu's recent form and it was obvious he wasn't going to give the second set on a platter to Roger. But by some people's standards, you are really struggling if you concede one breakpoint all match and don't win 1 and 1.

Yep, that's the standard people have for Fed which is of course ridiculous. This match kind of reminded me of Sampras except that Sampras would've won 85%-90% of his first serve points.

I was at that Blake-Fed match by the way. He could've rolled Blake something fierce with a couple of more points won, but Blake really did play well on some of those points.

How is a straight sets win and not being broken a struggle? I was at this match and Roger played just fine. The second set was competitive which is great for the crowd. And don't forget in these masters series events you don't play crap players. From the first ball you're playing good players. Roger hit a number of shots that got "oohs" and "aahs" from the crowd. And Massu had a very vocal cheering section which the rest of the crowd got a kick out of. The only bummer about the match is it was so damn cold! I didn't think it could get that cold in the desert. I feel for anyone going to see Roddick tonight. I'll bet the stands will be quite empty. They were for Roger's match.

Also let's not forget how tough 1st matches can be and he had to get rid of the jet lag coming from the middle east.

It's not a struggle at all, just some unrealistic expectations. :)

Yeah, they really have to think about the night matches here. Even on very warm days, the desert is going to get pretty chilly.

I agree with you here, it wasn't a struggle at all, just a more competitive match. Sure, not top Federer but that's not really common, this was just his normal self, he didn't play bad at all and there were, as you said, some magical shots! :hearts:

Well done, Rogi and good luck against Ollie! If he wins against him, you it's a good sign. :p

Also good luck against Gasquet/Grosjean, I really wanted to see that. Shame they're not airing. :o

Beautiful footwork.

I just watched the highlights from the Safin-Moya match.
Safin looks very good actually, those serves, and backhands - boy...

I feel we all tend to count him out, just because he's so inconsistent and wasn't active for a long while, but judging by what I saw I can say he's still got big titles in him.

So, there is an example of a player who's capable of beating Roger in big matches whose game I actually like to watch! :D
(Nalbandian is pretty watchable too ;) )

Marat is the guy who is consistent in his inconsistency... ;) If anyone can come out after not playing for half a year and play well and win a title, it's that looney Russian. I say, watch out... once in a while he is serious and he means it, esp w Rogi in his path to the F. Not saying he will do it in IW but w him one never ever knows. But since I didn't see his match vs. Careless, I don't know if HE played well or Moya played badly after winning that first-set TB.

Yeah, how's Nalby looking? He's quietly winning while all the focus is on Rafa, and the others, esp AA and his "exemplary" behaviour.

He's not only playing sans brace, but plus Coach, who wasn't supposed to join him til Hamburg. Anyone know anything about that?

Although I feel bad for Yves, but I know he's doing it as a favor for Rogi. Hopefully ESPN2 will show his singles match today. They have coverage all day here in CA and Roger's the third match scheduled on the main stadium court. I'm glad he's not playing at night because it's so cold....and I don't think ESPN2 will have night coverage today, they're commercials said they would be showing world baseball again. So I guess Rafa/Fish doesn't warrent TV coverage. ;)

I think the new doubles format is a big reason why so many players played doubles here at IW. I think most of them were using the doubles matches to get a good rhythm on serve, returns, and volleys. Since it's mostly for training, you want to make sure that you aren't going to play a lot of tennis, so the new format makes that happen.

I'm getting coverage from 11am to 3pm, so we'll either see Baggy and Hingis/Davenport or they'll show tape delay from yesterday until the Hingis/Davenport match starts. And if that match is short maybe they'll show some of Roger. But I bet not. They have no control over the scheduling I guess, so it's tough to blame them for not seeing Roger so far. Still I'd rather have Roger playing during the day when the weather is warmer.

I'm anxious to watch that one, actually :)

If it's Gasquet then I'm sure it'll be a spectacular match, and to be honest - I'm pretty sure Roger'll win.
If it's Hrbaty I'm so waiting for Roger to kick his sorry ass, especially when their last match 2 years ago was a complete nonsense, with Roger having 2524658 chances to close it out, and deliberately losing in the end.
No reason for Roger not to own Hrbaty, and I'm sure he will.

Roger will take care of Ollie, I am not too worried about that match. The next round will be challenging if it is Gasquet. I would love to watch that match, especially if Gasquet plays like he did in Monte Carlo. I think Roger will prevail this time though.

If the Dominator makes it, Roger should school him especially since their h2h is so lopsided.

Well, I agree he should thrash him, but I wouldn't say their h2h is very much of an indication, seeing as they have only met twice - in the space of 4 years - the last encounter being 2 years ago:

2004 Cincinnati AMS, Hard, R64
Ohio, USA Hard R64 Hrbaty 6 1 6 7 4 6

rofe
03-15-2006, 01:26 AM
I blame this poor performance on two main reasons:

1) His 1st serve percentage
2) Lack of bite on his 1st serve.

He had both in 2004 and parts of 2005. He really needs to tighten his serving game a lot more so that he can put pressure on his opponent's serve game. Even when he gets his 1st serve in it is no longer "unreadable" as it used to be. Ollie does know Roger's serve motion so it is no surprise that he can read it well but other players have been reading his serve as well.

He can't be casual about his own serve game and expect to take the break back all the time. Against good players, that is a disaster waiting to happen.

Having said that, I am happy that he pulled through as champions often do. I just don't like that he is going into defensive mode so often.
