Big play on:

Spadea to beat Goldstien @1.5

Have not made this wager yet but will soon. I watched goldstien play ginepri and though he was decent, ginepri gave him the match. Gold struggled the whole match to hold serve and I give him credit for saving 10+ BPs. But Spadea is in great form this year and I don't give Goldstien much of a chance.

Confidence is at 72.5% for Spadea to win.

More to come.. will post schedule later!

Bjorn Phau +104 over Rainer Schuettler ($500 to win $520)

I don't have a vibe as to how other people feel about this match but to tell you the truth I don't really care and never have. Bjorn is coming off the biggest win of his career when he beat Andre Agassi in straight sets in Round 2 and to see how he embraces that will be very interesting. Confidence wise I don't see things getting much better for Phau as he is probably on Cloud 9 as we speak. Also, a lot of people are calling Phau's win a fluke and a one time thing but last time I checked, this was the same Phau that beat Robby Ginepri and Vincent Spedea last year. I thought Phau played well against Moya in Doha, was okay at the Aussie Open and has since been quiet. I would only ever back Mr. Schuettler on the indoor quicker surfaces as he doesn't have the same outdoor game he use to have back in his days of prime. I found an interesting stat while we're on the subject. Not counting his win over Klec in Round 1 of this tournament, Rainer Schuettler is 0-6 versus fellow German players on outdoor hardcourts since August 25, 2003. His last win against a German on outdoor hardcourts (again not counting this weeks Round 1 win) was against Kiefer when Schuettler was a TOP 10 player. Equally impressive is that Bjorn Phau is 6-1 versus German players since this time last year and he is 8-2 in his last 10 matches versus fellow countrymen. Strangely enough, Phau faced stiffer German opposition than Schuettler over the last 12 months and somehow Rainer only went 3-5 while Phau was 6-1. Phau has been a longtime journeyman but this is his surface and he is the stronger player. Sure you have to be impressed by Schuettler's win over Ferrer in the first round but Ferrer has been horrendous this year and I wouldn't value that win too much. Since Schuettler has issues with German players on outdoor hardcourts and since Mr. Phau must feel like he should make the finals of this tournament, I am taking the side of Phau Phau.

Luczak @ 2.7
They've already played twice this year, with the matches being split. Luczak is in some good form, a win over Tursunov proves that. He'll have his hands full with Malisse, but is definite value at 2.7. Malisse has played 15 matches already this year, which has to be wearing on his fitness.

Carlsen @ 3.25
Carlsen 2-0 up in H2H. Keifer has played very little tennis this year, which will make him a little raw going into this match. Last year, when he made it to the third round here, he'd played warm-up events the last two weeks, but it's different this year. I think Carlsen willl take it up to Kiefer today.

Montanes @ 1.85 x 2 Units
Very, very confident about this play! Montanes holds a 3-0 H2H advantage heading into this match, and the only reason I'd say they've been put even is Montanes poor form. Montanes getting over Moya is a great confidence booster for him, showing his form should be improving. I'm 80% confident Montanes will win.

Acapulco (Quarter-Finals): Thursday, March 2, 2006

Agustin Calleri -181 over Luis Horna ($905 to win $500)

Augustin looks like he is finally beginning to regain form this season as he is 4-0 in sets played this tournament and has wins over Beto and Nico Lapp. I know Beto was tired and Lapentti sucks but a win is a win and Calleri is probably getting some much needed confidence back. Believe it or not, my money will almost never be with Luis Horna on the clay courts against a decent clay courter because I feel that Horna has been much more successful on the hardcourts than on the dirt. Horna is coming off two wins over JA Marin and Dlouhy but I don't see him getting anywhere close to taking out a surging Calleri. Lifetime Calleri leads the series 4-1 and although H2H doesn't really mean much, it's pretty hard to overlook the facts on this one and I'm all over it. Get this, Agustin Calleri is 4-0 in ATP tournament quarter-final matches versus non-Spaniards since September 29, 2003. Luis Horna has lost his last two quarter-final matches and most of his QF wins have come on the hardcourts and not on the clay surface. Calleri is 10-2 lifetime in Acapulco and the two times he has made the quarter-finals, he has won and gone on to the finals. Not once has he ever lost an Acapulco quarter-final and that is not going to be changing today. Calleri has won 69% of all his career clay court matches while Horna is hovering around the 60% mark and actually has a losing record on the ATP circuit. Calleri loves playing here and this is usually the tournament that catapults him into the European clay court season. Agustin...show me the money!

Another thing to keep in mind:

There is not much wind factor today in Vegas.. Only 5-10MPH wind which isn't very bad. So consider it as good conditions and shouldn't have anything funky happen.

Tomorrow, however, the forecast predicts 20-30MPH winds!

Well watching how Spadea's playing in Vegas, vesus how Goldstein's playing I'm very confident Spadea will win easily. If Spadea does win I'm making my first withdrawl of the year and I've been waiting for a match like this for a while.

As you point out, Spadea could lose.. Frankly anyone could lose on any given day.. maybe Spadea gets sick, or just has an off day.. but I think it will take Spadea to throw the match away as I don't see Goldstein beating Spadea straight up!

The risks are there but I think they are very low in this match ;)

Acapulco (Quarter-Finals): Thursday, March 2, 2006

Nicolas Kiefer x James Blake x Gaston Gaudio -110 ($1980 to win $1800)

The risk is rather big to take on a parlay this size but with some slow action in the tournaments these days, I am going to take that risk. Let's start off with Kiefer who is 9-1 in his last 10 matches versus lefties and has never had a problem with the southpaws. Carlsen sucks on hardcourts and does not have any big wins on this surface against any kind of valuable opponents. I like the way Kiefer looked in Round 1 against Sargsian and it looks like he is finally about to have a breakout on the hardcourts. None of us have forgotten Kiefer's Semi-Final appearance at the Australian Open this year and this match looks too easy for him.

James Blake has been so inconsistent at times that it frustrates me. However, Vahaly is not in the same league as James and his path to Round 2 was rather easy. Blake destroyed Paradorn in Round 1 and he now has his sights set on winning this tournament. He is 39-11 over the last 12 months on this surface and to miss out on a nice bet like this would just suck. Blake is 2-0 in head-to-head against Vahaly and I see this being 3-0 after this one is all said and done. James wins this one in straight sets.

Gaston Gaudio is scary. He is scary because we don't know which Gaston is going to show up. Ah well. It can be a mediocre Gaston and we still win this match without a problem. Marcos Daniel is a farce who is in way over his head and I don't really care to even check any kind of stats on this longtime journeyman. Daniel is much better on the indoor surfaces and I would not be caught dead backing his ass in a tournament like this. Sure he is coming off a win over Mr. Massu but Gaudio is TOP 10 and Massu is nowhere near the TOP 10. Gaudio is finally starting to get his game back and I expect him to nicely complete this betting tri-fecta and show me some money.

Well Spadea looks solid from the stats (only just had a chance to review the match properly)...but I wouldn't go as far as saying he is a lock. It is tempting to put another bet on him to recover losses, but I don't believe in chasing money lost on the same day. Spadea is top 50 material if he keeps this form and level of results up. Goldstein is essentially a journeyman with an over-inflated ranking.
