Well, here we go! Hewitt v Ferrero to start <rubs hands in glee>.

(Nobody here? I guess that means everyone's either a) already asleep, or b) watching the match, c) eating turkey. Depends on timezone and inclination.)

I see there are no live scores on the Davis Cup website <grrrr>.
Eurosport or Channel 7 will have to do instead I guess.

Hmmm, article with link to the live scoreboard has *just* appeared on daviscup.com (not before time either!!!). And it *does* appear to be working, so I won't post updates here.

Hi Number1Kim, glad to know someone else is out there! Probably won't be able to stay and follow this too long as it's the wee hours here now.

Hope you enjoy the matches!

jtipson

Me neither, Central. An hour behind you, but I'm yawning my head off already....wonder why they didn't put these matches on later in the day? The semi against Switzerland was actually at a reasonable time to watch from Europe.

I'm here, in and out...

on the daviscup.com live scoreboard what's the 0 next to Lleyton's name and the 1 next to Juan Carlos's name for (in blue all the way to the left)? I'm just curious. Looks like they're both holding relatively easy so far.

Nah, this isn't 2002 anymore :p He's gifted Hewitt one win already, that was more than enough ;)

(that said, I fully expect Hewitt to come raging back and any minute now, and eventually win this match)

Deboogle!.
11-28-2003, 12:50 AM
my fault, I didn't make myself clear. I meant that JC will pull a Federer like what Federer did in Paris not playing well and having no confidence and not looking good and then bang, show up at the next tournament (Houston) playing all great and beat people a lot of us thought he'd lose to. It'd just be funny for Ferrero, after how horrible he looked in Houston, to show up in Oz and smack all the nay-sayers.

Raul-Lopez
11-28-2003, 12:54 AM
1-0 for Ferrero.... this can be easy and boring

jtipson
11-28-2003, 12:54 AM
Ah, I thought you meant that JC would get to 2 sets up, 5-3 and serve for the match and then *lose* (which is, unfortunately, what Roger did against Lleyton in the DC sf).

Chloe le Bopper

Oooohhhh... I thought you meant "pull a Federer" like in the Davis Cup against Lleyton ;)

My bad!

Deboogle!.
11-28-2003, 12:56 AM
Yea, sorry not til you guys pointed out did I realize there were multiple things that I could've meant lol (y'know, when it's in your own head it makes perfect sense :p)

Of course.... I suppose he could go 2-0 sets and 5-3 and do the same thing... but JC isn't really known for doing stuff like that is he?

Maybe Lleyton will stop making a lot of errors and get into the groove and it won't be an issue :D

jtipson
11-28-2003, 12:58 AM
Actually I think JC has a pretty good shot here (even more so now he's a set up). I don't see why Lleyton's game would give him an advantage on grass over JC, it's not like he's an s&v. Experience on the surface might, but otherwise I think it's even.

And not playing well in Houston may have been the secret weapon. Tempted to put the Monty Python line in here - nobody expects.....

Deboogle!.
11-28-2003, 01:01 AM
lol could be. in a 5-set match it's hard to say, esp. since Lleyton hasn't played a match since the Federer match - he may have needed a set to get into it. He definitely has the desire, he says he wants this pretty much more than anything, so I guess it'll be a matter of whether the pressure gets to him too much.

Deboogle!.

Base on previous live score board. It's supposed to be the number of rubbers won by the country. So, it means Spain leading 1-0 in the tie but obviously, it's an error - for the time being. ;)

Deboogle!.
11-28-2003, 01:19 AM

Those are things I would like to know too.

Raul is watching, but he's not telling us.

WyverN
11-28-2003, 01:39 AM
The court is terrible and the surface is uneven. Neither player is playing well but Ferrero looks very uncomfortable out there, not a very good match so far. Hewitt will probably win the next 2 sets but it will be tight.

Expect Phillopoussis to thrash both Ferrero and Moya since the bounce is erratic and the serve is bouncing all over the place.

Ferrero 6/3 3/6 1/0

Yeah I am watching
Its best of 5 sets
right now the score is......
Ferrero leads
6-3 3-6 3-2
with Hewitt to serve.
Ferrero seems to be playing a bit better since the second set ended. This set could go either way.

LOL No Tennis Fool it's not. Actually I've heard a lot of people who'd rather have America the Beautiful, but as someone who likes to sing, I quite enjoy the challenge of the Star Spangled Banner. Anyhow, I still maintain that it's a good thing the wrong anthem was played outside the US - our "anti-foreign players" accusers would never let us hear the end of it lol.

Anyway yes it appears like there are 2 anthems
From the Yahoo caption: "Australian officials apologized for playing the pre-civil war republican anthem and played a correct version of Spain's national anthem before the first match of the final started."

nice job wasting 2bs at 15-40 4-3 lleyton

Hewitt's celebrations were plain embarassing. Not at the end of the match but all throughout. He abused a lines person, he was falling to his knees after important points, he was yelling obseneties and it was bad sportsmanship/behaviour even by Hewitt standards.

But it was a great match! Lots of drama and excitement. Eurosport says so.

There is something wrong when the rest of the world gets to see Davis Cup and in the US we get Superset tennis.

Somehow, that doesn't surprise me. Again - all I ask, is not to see the nasty ass pictures of his post match celebration. Swell for him that he won and all, but looking at him victorious (over anybody - even Roddick) offends me :D

The surface and crowd were the deciding factor; it had nothing to do with Ferrero's lack of fight. (says she who didn't get any coverage of the match :D)

Again - let's see him bring Ferrero to 5 on clay :p

Yes it sounds like the crowd was huge, but it sounds like they were both having trouble with the court (based on what the few people who could actually watch said). It sounds like Lleyton got fired up at the 'right' times (4th set TB, etc) and Ferrero had little periods of 'disappearing' which hurt. Anyway, it doesn't seem like Ferrero's the type to give up matches at the end. He strikes me as a great fighter, but I guess I don't know his playing that well enough to really be able to say.

as for pics of Lleyton, I'm sure there will be plenty, guess you'll just have to stay away from them lol!

and *whines* it's not fair that these DC matches are some of the best all year and we can't see them :(

LOL baseline, that's true... but hey a little tennis (regardless of how ridiculous it was) is better than none at all.

As for Lleyton's celebrations... first, that's how Lleyton is anyway, and second, it's Davis Cup and obviously he's extra-passionate about it and it's one of the things I like about him. I can't really blame anyone who can get real excited over stuff!

As a patriotic person, I just really admire Lleyton's patriotism. He seems to be willing to sacrifice personal gain (both in his rank and financially) for DC so I just admire that a lot. (just to clarify, I admire all the players who play DC because they all sacrifice their schedules and rest times and stuff, it's just that Lleyton seems more committed and passionate than most)

I wouldnt' say that he's sacrificing personal gain for Davis Cup. I would say that he wants the Davis Cup more than just about anything else, and will do whatever he can to make sure he's ready to fight for it. It's all about personal gain, imo. Sure he's representing his country out there, but he's doing it because HE wants it.

Aren't you impressed by the fact that Hewitt just beat one of the "big boys" despite not having played a match in months. I sure am. No match play, but he was still the better player on the big points. Not to mention he owns Federer, who totally choked against Lleyton in the DC semis, and Roddick.

I'm not a big Lleyton fan but I did expect him to have an easier time of it. Glad I'm not the only one.

BTW, where's all the whining about making the surface grass to take advantage of Hewitt's prowess on that surface? When Houston was held on hard court people were screaming to high heaven about it. Or is it just that Roddick was perceived as the beneficiary in Houston?
(If there was whining...never mind!!!)

As for the cursing and carrying on Lleyton seems to have done, substitute Roddick and see how the comments change from tolerant to something less than.

1) I don't see why this match was supposed to be easy. Ferrero beat Hewitt on a very similar surface under similar pressure-filled conditions just a few months ago.

2) This is Davis Cup. Of course the home team is going to select a surface best suited to its players. That's always been the case. The selection of court surface at Houston to be outdoor hard was questionable since it has always been, and very much should be, an indoor tournament, culminating the fall indoor season. It does appear, however, that this was due to cost issues, etc. instead of favoritism for certain players.

As Lee pointed out, this is Davis Cup. It's in the RULES that the home team picks the surface. It's not as if it's been held indoors forever and a day then all of a sudden the Aussie's went "teehee, we're picking grass!"

Sure, Morrison beat him on grass. But that was one and a half years ago. Ferrero is a much improved player now on all surfaces, not to mention he just beat Hewitt on the fast hard courts of the US Open, which has a practically identical court speed and ball bounce to grass.

I don't know about that, Hewitt, Federer, and Ferrero all play some of their best tennis in DC.

baseline ace, you bring up some excellent points. But you just have to accept the double standards that many here envoke where Andy is involved.

Leo, I didn't expect the match to be as easy as most people. Coming off a long break is hard, even if it means being rested and ready, there's still the lack of that match-atmosphere that can't be re-created in practice.

Point is that Lleyton's last two matches have been victories against two players who are having the years of their career so far during a really awful year for Lleyton. He's shown that he can compete with these guys, and many of the others, and there's no reason to doubt that he'll be back next year!

LOL Star, I wasn't suggesting that he's the only one who is willing to put DC ahead of almost everything...and the young people in the "group" all seem to be dedicated to DC, and I love that, but he just seems to have an extra "oomph" about it over a lot of the people at his level playing now.

Although the occasional Hewitt fan who applauds his behavior but insults Roddick's... and vice versa, of course... is rather amusing.

A few Andy fans are Hewitt fans too so obviously his behavior wouldn't bother us any more than Andy's doesn't bother us. I don't think it's the Lleyton fans who insult Roddick but people who maybe don't really like Lleyton that much but HATE Andy who don't comment about Lleyton's behavior but condemn Andys..... does that make sense?

1) That Escude win was supposedly great. I read that Nicholas wasn't really hurting, he just gave up. This is the same player who decided to retire at 4-4 in the deciding set one time, remember. Plus, Sargsian's best surface is probably grass (he's won a title on the stuff), and he could have beaten Grosjean if he just played one or two points a bit better.

2) True, that was one of few occassions when I was disappointed with Ferrero's fight (inc. Australia + Houston). But overall, Juan Carlos's record in DC is pretty damn good. Something like 11-3 ?

That is a very good question. I would think the answer would be no, and they'd stick with Ferrero, no matter what Lopez does in the doubles. Especially since Ferrero actually played well today. If he had been blown off the court, then that would be a different story. But Feliciano still doesn't have the experience and might not be able to respond to the pressure well. It's a tough call.

I agree, playing Lopez would be very risky; but ferrero whined away in his interview about how we have to consider that he's been sick ... true, he has been. But if he's not going to be healthy enough to run until he pukes on Sunday, then he shouldnt' play.

Has the National Anthem fuck up been discussed in this thread, or another? Apparently at the opening ceremony, they played the wrong national anthem for Spain... apparently, the one they played was from the 1930's

HOW does that happen?

I know, I just read his comments. He does tend to blame losses on injuries at times (i.e. RG 2002), and this time he made it sound like "I've been so sick for ages but I still gave it my 100 percent for my country; I'm such a noble and gallant fighter" blah blah blah. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it ? ;)

Yes, that's how I read it too. Oh well, nobody is perfect ; I don't root for him for his press confernences.

As for the anthem shite, check the thread I made in general messages, there is more information in there.

Nalbandian has a habit of blaming injuries for losses as well.
If your injured - don't play. If you play don't use injuries as an excuse.

omg today totaly rocked....

I don't think it is just the fact that Ferrero was sick today like he says..or has been sick....it was fucking hot out there and I swear to god I felt sorry for the both of them, if he has been sick, then today would have totaly made it worse....I know when I spoke to him on Satuday he was full up with a cold of some sort....the heat would have taken everything out of him...but enough with the excuses....its a shame he lost...but hail king carlos...:worship:

As for the anthem fuck up, it was a total disgrace....then all the Aussie supporters pissed and moaned about having it played again...also where do they get off having someone play a TRUMPET for the Spanish team yet have someone sing for the Aussies...Why not have the same?!

*rant over, i need to go and pack*

VAMOS ESPANA!!

(Spanish cheer squad TOTALY rock, such nice people!!!)

Well, if after blaming injuries for losses, you stop playin for a month or three weeks like he did after Wimbledon or the Us Open or for Basel because of the recovery, then you cant really say it is an excuse.

Ferrero is bad against big servers, Feliciano defeated Mark in Madrid.
I would have Ffeliciano and Moya in the third day.

Ferrero lost to Dent and Roddick on Hardcourts in straight sets (but he defeated Ljubicic), and he defeated Verkerk and Philippoussis (on clay) I think.

I think Ferrero will lose, I hope not, because I would love to see Carlos defeating Hewitt, but I think Fferrero will lose.

He's also beaten Arthurs on just about every surface in existance - except grass. ;)
