Looking at Coria's results lately on clay, Coria needs to apply for a wild card in Houston this year. I'll bet he could get one.

Yeah interesting Grosjean's not playing. Defending finalist and all. But didn't his wife just have a new baby or she's due anytime? So maybe he won't play as much for a while or something. Understandable :)

I thought for sure Grosjean would play this again.Davis Cup schedule change may have impacted the schedules of several players. Grosjean would be going from Miami to France to Houston to Europe again if he played Houston. It's probably easier just to stay in Europe after DC.

Why would Marcos play in Houston when he has direct entry to Montecarlo next week? I guess it was a false alarm from the Houston paper, unless they give him enough $$$ to lure him there.

I Hope Andy applies for a wildcard.

Why would he?

It wouldn't make any sense for him to do so. He's playing a DC tie in Glasgow, on hard, the weekend before, and he already assured a direct entry to Monte Carlo on the week after. He would suffer from jet lag and the abrupt change of surface, as well as getting a physical handicap for Monte Carlo. I guess a $400,000 tourney is not really worth it.

Deboogle!.
03-04-2006, 01:04 AM
Plus, he could have entered directly, his ranking is now high enough. He could've made the decision to play when everyone else had to - by the entry deadline. the WCs better go to Fish and 2 other deserving young americans. :)

Odd indeed. There was a similar problem with Ferrero earlier this year in Auckland. In the end he got a wildcard to play the Sydney tournament, because the Auckland TD's had already given out all of the WCs.

Marcos is playing for Cyprus in Bulgaria for Davis Cup until Sunday so i suppose he'll have to fly from Bulgaria to Houston directly afterwards.

This could explain why they are telling me Marcos doesn't play his first round until Wednesday evening. Could this be right? Last year they were playing first round Monday and Tuesday, Second round Wednesday and Thursday, Quarters Friday, Semi's Saturday and Final Sunday. Do I have this right? I thought they were just trying to get me to buy a Wednesday evening ticket and how would they know if he gets to the second round?

Anybody have any insight?

Turkeyballs Paco
04-04-2006, 05:24 PM
Yep, all my ticket sales information shows 1st round Mon-Tues, 2nd round Wed-Thurs. I called Westside back and asked again, they insist Marcos won't be playing until Wednesday, I asked how is that possible if Wednesday is second round play, and they couldn't answer me. Does that sound fishy to anybody else?

Weird. I'm not gonna be able to go Wednesday anyway, so there's no point worrying about it, but I do want to see him play if he's here, so I guess I won't get to see him Monday or Tuesday, either?

Probably they're pulling a bait and switch, but we'll see.

I remember when I went to the tourney 2 years ago it was also right after Davis Cup that year, and they did keep a few 1st round matches for Wednesday for those guys who'd come from Europe and other places far away.

But surely he'd be out practicing on Tuesday if not Monday too :)

Even if that happens, my guess is that he will hang around with his brother until the end of the week and then probably he will lose early at MC. He has entered Estoril, so i guess he plans Estoril-Rome-Hamburg for his season. I would only be concerned if he skipped MC all together, that would signal he is not taking the clay court season that seriously.

Deb, good to hear that the ole Mattress is finally treating European players well. Wasn't there a huge crisis the first time he hosted Year Ends w/even Roger getting furious at the way Europeans were treated like 2nd class citizens?

Hard to know about Dent's actual health since in addition to genes, he got hypochondria from his father. Sad...I enjoy watching him...A Safin-Dent match would be a helluva Demon Fest! :)

Deb, good to hear that the ole Mattress is finally treating European players well. Wasn't there a huge crisis the first time he hosted Year Ends w/even Roger getting furious at the way Europeans were treated like 2nd class citizens? As far as I experienced and heard, the Macks treat their players like royalty. There were many discussions here and other places about what happened at the Masters Cup, but I know that for the USMCC, he treats all the players fantastically. I remember that Tommy Haas especially was treated like a god, the Macks love him. So I am quite sure that they would love a guy like Marcos and treat him quite well because as I said, he's the type of personality that the Houston crowds (passionate types) would love :) Beyond that I can't say, but when I was at the tourney, everyone looked really happy and no player looked like he wasn't being treated great.

Marcos isn't a clayphobe, but his family would be the only reason that he would play here, but it's not like he has a huge amount of points to defend during this time of the season.

Anyone have any thghts. on Baggy's prospects on clay?
I saw him at Roland Garros last year against Nalbandian - and although he finally lost the match, he played superbly and won the first set 6-0  I assume he learnt on clay (not much else around in Cyprus) and he also trains in France which is predominantly a clay court country - so I am sure he will be fine. Of course the clay will negate his power a little - but he is more than power so I'm sure he will be fine :)
