The Ramones, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Nicks, Cream, The Who, some new bands that you probably never heard of, and some songs by the "School of Rock" band. Btw, the kids actually play the instruments - they've all got loads of talent. It's a very good cd and I recommend if you like that kind of music.

Their latest transcends hip-hop...

Reminds me of what Beck did for alternative music.

Although musically and stylistically brilliant, I'm not necessarily fond of their lyrics, though. (no offense to your faves, Lucidd, but NOBODY will ever come close to Chuck D and KRS-One when it comes to lyricism.)

Lucidd, yes, I have and agree with you. I haven't listened to my old stuff in quite some time. Seems that the Wiggles CD has taken over (oh my aching head!) while the kids are in the car. Although I must say they were bouncing in the car seats to "Hey Ya" yesterday, lol. Not quite sure how the staff over at the Montessori school took it, but the looks on their faces as I pulled up were just priceless.

Swirling, its a great cd, has elements of progressive jazz, seventies r&b, rock, hints of classical...it really merits a purchase.

Ironic...I was driving through Miami a while back and Mase (from De La Soul) was actually the guest DJ doing a set of old school. Its actually been almost 12 years since I have seen them live, but that flashback actually made me want to pull out my old (choke on this one...) cassettes.

I hear you on the education part. I feel the same way about quite a bit of electronica (it gets a bad rap, too.) Its too easy to generalize about an entire genre based on the commercialized garbage one hears on a radio station. I would hate electronica too if I was closed minded enough to think that Lasgo and Moby were the cream of the crop!

In fact, my favorite DJ has produced for P. Diddy (I swear I wont buy it) and I saw Diddy at the Paul Van Dyk show in Miami last month. Strange things are indeed happening.

Anyway, that was just my tirade on getting your head out of the musical hole its in...experiment with sound and music. It might just surprise you at what you end up liking and listening to ten years down the road....

Speaking of which, I just got the newest Ben Harper. (was low on my must have list...) I will tell you all if I like it once I get out of the coma it induced, lol. (Its VERY mellow.)

Give it up Samantha. You don't get it and you never will. The current Snoop Dogg is a shadow of his former self and kind of a sell out but once upon a time he was good, if you must know.

I've given up on the idea of you ever truly understanding hip hop. Maybe you're too young to be able to interpret it or maybe you're just too sheltered to be able to comprehend the true meaning of the lyrical content. I don't know.

It's even better cause it sounds definitely more whole, more as 1, both musically and lyrically. It could be their last for a long time, they feel like they've finally made what was in them. They're gonna take some time apart and exploit solo stuff, so I'm kinda sad. But at the same time very happy cause this is their best I think, plus very curious about what's next for them.

Definitely a must-buy if you like them already!!

What makes me think I understand it so well??
1) I teach freestyling and songwriting
2) My battle record is at 87% (wins).
3) I am a judge at many different rap sites for various competitions
4) I've been brought in as an expert judge for battles

Call me nuts but that leads me to believe that I know hip hop. Anyone who has any credibility doesn't give much cred to Ja Rule. He's just not good.
If you undserstood at ALL you'd get why but it would take far too long to explain it to you. Go away. Thank you.

well you can say ja rules not that good and thats your opinion because someone else might think he is the best of hip-hop...and i could say that i dont like tupac or what not and that wouldnt make it fact or fiction...it would make it an opinion...and its a message board...i cant really go away..just dont come in my threads anymore if you want to avoid my comments i suppose:)

Yup...you don't get it
hip hop isn't JUST about liking a beat or a lyric or not. It's a science. Ja Rule is pathetic about multis and his metaphor usage is abyssmal. It's not just the beat. There's an exact method to it. 2+2=4..always has and always will. Rap lyrics are mathematical. It's an exact formula. It's not up for debate. Ja Rule is missing serious skills. In the world of hip hop, he can't add. It's that simple. Tupac could.

whether you like them or not...the skill level isn't up for debate any more than a math problem.

well i dont like math and i dont like hip-hop either:p...but i have to give credit to alot of those who freestyle in battles and such..i was watching one on television once and the people were so clever...it was quite interesting..its entertaining to see two people go at it and poke fun at one another...lol
