well.... bring on 2004!!!

Unfortunately 2003 didn't end *quite* how we'd like (after the USO who would've thought we'd see Andy have trouble with qualifiers ranked below 200, lose his last SIX tiebreakers, lose at home in Houston on an outdoor hardcourt twice, the crazy-angry Andy returning periodically, go 2-3 after becoming #1), BUT all good things must come to an end, and the summer was just totally unreal.

Fortunately, there are tons of positives (in addition to the obvious achievements): his backhand, much better. his volleying, much better (even the serve-and-volley sometimes !!!). The comebacks all year long, amazing. The physical endurance, also amazing.

Even though the only place his ranking can go is down, his tennis can only get better. Hopefully this new psycho-hard regiment that Brad is supposedly going to put him on will help so he won't have those little injuries like he had early on this year. If they keep working on his groundies and shot selection, he should improve significantly on clay and if they keep working on the net game, he should improve even more on grass!

Everyone's saying Andy will lose his #1 very early on in 2004 but aside from Australia, he has less to defend than anyone even close to him. So I figured it out mathematically through the FO.

I used CR points just b/c it's easier, but if you multiply by 5 it should be the same for the Entry System.

Andy: 138 (mandatory points + 64 best 5) = 202
Roger: 148 (+130) = 278
JCF: 409 (+86) = 495
Andre: 351 (+71) = 422

Now of course the second half of the year is pretty much all Andy LOL

But considering these #s I don't see how he'll lose it that fast as long as he plays well in Australia and improves on clay and in the spring US TMS tourneys.

Anyway.... LOTS to look forward to... including my personal fave... the OLYMPICS! You gotta like Andy's chances with the same court and ball as the USO!

So, express your optimism too :D

he lost his last 6 tiebreaks? how many did he lose in Houston, 3 right? ANYWAYS, you better believe it's gonna be a whole new Roddick next year, as Brad has said the big difference will come after the offseason. he's having him really work on his physical shape, but he's already in awesome physical shape, how much better can he get. we will most definitely see and improved backhand, that goes without saying. and Also, those people who say he's gonna lose that #1 spot right away in 2004, they're just ingorant. it may be true, but what they see is that semis Andy has to defend at the Australian Open, BUT Ferrero has to defend not only a quarterfinal appearance, but a final appearance in one of the lead-up tournaments, and doesn't Roger have to defend like the very first tournament of the season, as well as a 4th round appearance. anyways, Andy can build on his lead the whole first half of the year. all he has to defend is a semis in the Australian Open, 2 finals appearances at memphis and Houston, a title in Austria, and a quarterfinal appearance at Indian Wells. and he's gonna be seeded #1 for pretty much all of these tournaments, so he won't have to go through the tough opponents, bigger seeds he had to do at the beginning of 2003. so i can't wait for 2004, and see a new and improved Andy. and besides, i don't think Andy could have kept up his summer hardcourt 2003 results after the US Open, he must have been drained from all that. so good luck Andy for 2004:rocker2:

yes Naldo, 2 in Paris (to Henman) and FOUR in Houston (2 to Schuettler, 1 to Coria, 1 to Federer). For some reason and I don't know why, that's troubling me the most out of anything lol.

Ferrero's points are distributed pretty evenly throughout the whole year, but the other top guys are heavy on either the Jan-June season or the June-November season. Naldo, see the point totals I listed above.

So, for Andy to lose his #1 ranking, he'd have to do much worse in the AO than he did this year and Fed and Ferrero would have to do much better (and they could, certainly).

I'm the most excited about the Olympics, how about you guys?

The tiebreak results are bothering me the most too. I think it's cuz he used to do so well in those. He would win most of those. Now it's like he doesn't even come CLOSE in the tiebreakers. He loses in the tiebreakers with scores of like 7-2 or 7-3. I mean...where is his confidence? (aka his head, lol).

Andy doesn't have that much to defend in the beginning of the season, but he's *always* done not as well there. He always had his best results in the summer swing. Surely he'll improve next year of course. And I can't to see what kind of Andy we will see after the off-season with Gilbert.

Yes exactly.... it was the non-closeness of them that's the most troubling. His serve in general was not too hot for the past month or so.

Definitely looking ahead to 2004 and hoping/assuming these problems will be figured out!

His serve is ineffectively placed in the box. He won't take advantage of opponents' short
returns. He can't be slicing when he's not
even used to it. The backhand slice
has to be hard and low-bouncing. All he did
was hit it passively-only hoping instead of knowing
it works.
It's obvious that he's not practicing
different returns enough.
I want to see him make drop shots and angled volleys
because those take away his opponents' rhythm.

He wasted time in
SNL when he knew that Masters Cup took
a lot of energy to compete in. Why did
he give another reason to be humiliated?
I know that Andre and Roger have also lost semifinals
before, but Andy should've said no to a busy
schedule.

I could care less about the Olympics. I wish tennis weren't and Olympic sport. It's an unrealistic format for tennis. Sort of a blend of FedCup and a real tournament. It's one of the many sports I would eliminate from the bloated Olympic events.

Really? How come... maybe I'm less familiar with it than I thought. It's not like a regular tournament? I know the draw is 64 singles, 32 doubles. How is it different? I love the Olympics. Outside of tennis, Olympics are the only sports I watch. I can easily name where I was when a number of the big memorable stuff happened. I just turn into psycho-patriotic mode LOL.

and about next year being harder.... OH yeah. But Andy seems dedicated to improving, so yeah, hopefully he does.

Dial up! The ATP page must take forever to load for you.

I've got DSL now, but I got a thing from the cable TV company about their cable service that is supposed to be even faster than DSL, so I'm going to look into that.

Yeah I took the LSAT in June let's not talk about that lol. My applications are actually all in, wahooooo, now it's just the waiting.

yep all the applications went in a few weeks ago. Most of my friends applying to law school have already applied. Maybe that's just the way we are here lol. I wanted to have them DONE by Thanksgiving and I beat that by over 3 weeks :)

I'm not really from the procrastinators. I hate having things over my head that need to get done. I like the weight lifted and I like having the freedom to do what I want, when I want :)

LOL Pie is good.. not pumpkin though. how bout a nice chocolate cream ;)

hmmmmmm how about something more challenging? Like lemon merangue?

Besides, I'm not that crazy about chocolate. I like fruit pies... I could go coconut cream. :)

Ok. I guess the application process happens a lot earlier than I thought. Good luck.

Deboogle!.
11-17-2003, 05:37 PM
Most applications aren't due til somewhere between Jan and March. We're just early birds I guess :) Plus the way law school admissions works, the earlier you apply the better your chances b/c they use rolling admissions and have more spots to give early on.

It actually doesn't take that long. But then again, I have my home page set as the ATP page...

Whenever I do get to go home, I savor the DSL as much as possible. But really, dial-up doesn't seem that bad anymore. I guess I'm getting used to it.

As for the applications...good luck Bunk. :)

Chess pie. I guess I didn't know it was a southern dish before I was trying to get a picture/recipie for you all.

It's a custard pie made with butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and the secret southern ingredient, cornmeal. Some recipies call for a little vinegar.

There are variations, and you can make a chocolate one... or a lemon one... etc. You can have brown sugar in it.
