Hey all! :wavey:

As a relatively new Andy fan I am trying to build up my video/DVD collection of some of his best matches.

So far I have:

- 2001 QF US Open w/ Hewitt
- 2001 French Open w/ Chang
- 2003 QF Australian Open w/ El Anayou
- 2003 Queen's Club w/ Agassi
- 2003 Cincy final w/ Fish
- 2003 US Open w/ Nalbandian and Ferrero

That's it. I don't have any from 2002. I feel like I'm missing a whole bunch of great matches. Wasn't there one where he beat Pete Sampras? I don't have his Wimbledon match w/ Federer, either.

If anybody has any good match recommendations that I should definitely have on tape please let me know!

Thanks!

damn.... I don't have any of those. I suck!

In fact the only ones i've even SEEN are
- 2003 Cincy final w/ Fish
- 2003 US Open w/ Nalbandian and Ferrero

I'm still kicking myself for missing the AO. I'd love to have your tape/dvd collection LOL

I love everything you have listed, Tangerine. My fave of course was the AO match with Younes.

I'd also recommend:
-2002 U.S. Clay Court Championships F w/Sampras
-2002 U.S. Open 4th round w/Chela
-2003 Montreal SF w/Federer

My favorite Andy matches:

when he defeated Rogi for first time... it was really intense, anticipated... he had nothing to lose

also, winning the US Open... not so much I love the match--but love the end, his reaction, his emotion, the awestruck of his face--seeing a man cry!!

Wimbledon 2003, 2nd round defeated Horseface:rocker2: that's another MUST, i ONLY have matches of 2003, i just started getting into men's tennis, pretty much only Andy and still like that, US Open 2002, and didnt realize to throw some tapes in and tape it. ALSO semis of Cincinnati where he defeated Mirnyi, ONE ue, JUST ONE!!!!!

All great but add Friday's TMC @Houston vs Coria.
Tennis doesn't get better than that.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! I have been taping the Houston matches as well. Although I missed the last set of Andy's match against Shuettler and the award ceremony!

Wasn't there one where he beat Pete Sampras? I don't have his Wimbledon match w/ Federer, either. Was that a really good one?

I was just rereading the original post and saw this.

The one where he beat Sampras was at the US Mens Clay Court in Houston and I don't know if that's generally even televised in the US (next year it'll be on the Tennis Channel).

As for the Wimbledon match, Andy totally got taken to school. Fed just whomped him (sort of like last night in the TMC SF except that at Wimby Andy was actually trying), definitely beautiful tennis but as an Andy fan and not a big Federer fan, it's not something I'd really like to watch ever again LOL

I saw that one live!!!!!

Bush came in during the middle of a point to take a seat.

That was a great tournament for me. I saw Coria live for the first time and I got to see Andy beat Sampras. :)

aww that's awesome.. lucky you!!!!

I don't know what I would've done during that match.... my old all-time fave playing my new current fave. that would've been really difficult!

11-16-2003, 05:44 PM
It was easy for me! Except I was really nervous that Sampras would win.

Andy's beating Samrpas early on was one of the first things I liked about him. :)

Deboogle!.
11-16-2003, 05:49 PM
lol true.. but it was on red clay after all hahaha.

i've always wondered why Andy can play so well on the clay at the clay court champs but not in Europe. He better step up!

star
11-16-2003, 05:56 PM
No, Andy beat Sampras in Miami a year before he beat Sampras on red clay. :)

Andy has trouble in Europe. Agassi had this trouble early on too. He didn't feel comfortable in Europe because it was so different. Maybe that is true for Andy too. Of course, he has to deal with a lot of anti-American sentiment now too. Maybe he should take that up with George Bush since they seem to be such pals now. ;|

Well of course!! I think the whole IW tape is gonna be a keeper. Mark it as the emergence of the new volleying, backhand down-the-line hitting Andy Roddick!

Here's a question for you all:

In recent memory, what would you say has been Andy's worst match? And I'm not asking about his worst match ever (we could go back a few years for that  ), I mean the very last match he played that was such complete shite to you that you cringed when you saw it. ;)

Interested to hear your responses.

Since he has had Brad he hasn't played that way too much...I have to say the year end event in Houston the match when he lost to Federer was pretty bad but, Andy was tired..

Best Andy match

El Anouyi in Austrailian Qrts.

Nalbandian in the US Open semis

Safin last week in Indian Wells

This year, he has played some great ones. The Moya match @ Miami was really cool, which you can see highlights of courtesy of those great guys at RoddickOnline.com

Australian open QF- Safin was really good!
US Open Lubjicic (idk what round, night match)(wasn't this year) - it was really intense

The Wimbly final O'Shay vs. Roddick the epic 5 setter, I have played it out in my mind a thousand times...lol

Deboogle!.

i member watching the ljubicic match. it was late at night and my dad was sleeping in the same room as me while i was on the couch watching the USA network. i had school the next day (i think i did at least. might've been another match) and my dad kept on waking up. all they could say to me was can't you go to sleep already? and of course i said no  i screamed when andy won and that woke my dad up in a second. very funny site :)
the safin match i didn't watch mainly cause it was going on while i was getting ready for school in the morning and i got on the computer to check what the score was. he was losing in the last set and right before i left he lost the match. this is right before school so you could imagine how i was through the whole day. i couldn't bring myself to watch the match when it was on tv
the moya match i have on tape somewhere in my house along with a bunch of other tapes

Yea, the documentary is cool, it pretty much states the obivous that, no matter how good you are you will never be a tennis pro without money.

I love the scene with Andy's mom and she talking about him. She says when Andy was 12 he came up to her with a Reebok contract for her to sign. She was like "Andy c'mon, Andy what is this?", I guess Andy told the Reebok guys "I am Andy Roddick, I am going to be a great player you better sign me now!" and he got signed, lol!!

Mrs Guga, the 2002 matches aren't hard to obtain but it wasn't a stellar year for him. He had far more memorable matches and breakthroughs in 2001 than he did in 2002. That's why I have more of those matches. :)

And   :worship: to bunk for giving us that hilarious video of young Andy on the junior tour. That was awesome! But I don't agree that Andy was "ugly" at 17! He was cute and he was still going through teenage growing pains (his voice was very different. lol) But he was adorable as an 11 year old. :hearts: Already he had a strong personality (the entertainer), cute looks, and a lot of his court movements hasn't changed much in the ten years since. :scared: I thought it was funny how he managed to obtain a Reebok sponsorship at the age of ten just by asking for it and yet he didn't dare dream that one day he'd win the US Open. Aww. :)

And a big :bigclap:  for Fumus for sending the video to her. You're so lucky to have the Tennis Channel. :)

haha Tangy :rocker2:! Ivan "scoopy forehand" Llbujicc lol...

My favorite Andy match this year is Andy vs. Bjorkman in DC or Andy vs. Moya in Maimi! Bjorkman match was a good time/old fashioned beatdown. The Moya one, was a roller coaster that had me leaving work early to see it on tv. I told Bunk, I was like watch he will come back!! I got in my kitchen just in time to see Moya fold trying to serve the match out, then that running fore-hand passer! omg!! Just awesome! :D :) :worship: :worship:

i loved that moya match, it was nerve racking though. and worse i was working on a big school project that was due the next day and had to watch it running back and forth from my grandmas house (next door) as i had to use her computer cuz ours decided to die on us.lol anyways, i managed to see that forehand pass, that was awesome. and then they showed the match again the next day after the womens finals so that was cool. i have decided its impossible to pick the best match of the year ... i agree with the safin or fed match as best loss--i saw the second half of the safin match cuz my dad picked me up from school after my finals and we went to watch it on tv lol. i dunno guys i cant pick a best match lol

because of the antics, the crowd, and the second set tb when pretty much everyone thought Andy was going to lose, except me, I predicted win all the way! Right Debbers?

Well, let's see if it's a keeper: :)

1) Did andy come back from behind and/or blow away his opponents' match point(s)? check. (Andy is at his best during pressure points!)

2) Was Andy playing a difficult opponent? check. (s/v players always cause him problems)

3) Did the match go into an extra set or a TB? check. two of them (Andy's the TB King :worship: )

4) Was the audience into it? Making a lot of noise, cheering for Andy during break points, etc? check. (quiet, dull audiences kill the atmosphere)

5) Did Andy throw a racket, curse, or otherwise act like an ass? check. (lots of Andy's-Being-A-Brat-Again moments: mocked the ump, threw a racket, screamed at himself, made smartass comments to Max, and kicked the microphone several times. Whee! It's like 2002 Andy all over again! ;) )

If the match had these qualities then IMO, it's a keeper! :yeah:

Fumus
08-04-2004, 05:10 PM
haha that's rep worthy Tangy! Bunk didn't I tell you Andy was going to be crazy in the match, I called it again. I said it would be old school Andy and stuff. I just had a feeling that he would wanna let loose(<--look I actually use the word correctly). One thing is for sure, he didn't look tired and he played pretty damn well at some points. ;)

Fumus

Guess which match I'm adding to my esteemed Andy collection? ;)

Yes, that's right---the Agassi Cincy match! Another match that he (barely) lost in but it was still such a good one that it must be cherished forever. It had all the qualities of a classic:

* an aging tennis legend makes a comeback after a 16-month drought to beat this young hardcourt whipper snapper :armed:

* excellent, high-quality playing from both players; only one break of serve and two nausea-inducing TBs :)

* sold out audience of 10,500 was loud, ecstatic, and decidedly pro-Andre

* Lots of Bad Andy  moments: dropped the f-bomb very clearly at least three times  (Cliffy apologized for the first one. lol) Horrendously bad line calls cause Andy to yell at umpire, scream into his towel, and kick a sign (eliciting boos and applause from the crowd). Is good friends with mentor so lots of laughing and joking across the net, too. :yeah:

I've watched this match three times now. Love it! :worship:

I totally agree with you! :worship: I mean as much as I want to see Andy win as many matches as he can, I'd rather watch a long, heart-pounding, nail-biting match (with him winning preferably of course ) than a boring, short, very relaxing match  just my opinion lol

im totally with u on that deb! im grateful for the US open series this year cuz it seems like there is more tennis on this summer than usual, meaning less depending on live scoring yay. :) and yeah watching a high quality tennis match is fun, but not when andy is playing, unless its on tape delay and i already know the score. i know thats like cheating and my mom and dad hate it when i tell them the score, but i cannot sit through a match knowing that i can get the score right here on the net. thats why they stole my mouse and keyboard during the andy/fed final in toronto. they made me suffer and watch it as if it was live, lol. anyways, i would rather watch andy kick someones ass, especially when i am forced to watch it via live scoring, ugh

melissa7
08-12-2004, 11:09 AM

LOL I was in Arthur Ashe stadium that night. I think I was watching Sampras/Haas. We kept hearing roars from the crowd over at the Louis Armstrong court. Then on the big screen during a changeover they showed THE point -- it had just happened over there. Figures that I was at the wrong court, lol! I remember going up to the highest row of Arthur Ashe at one point and looking down at Louis Armstrong court. you couldn't see much, but you could hear a lot of noise.

They're seriously 25-30$?:retard: that's like was 599$ canadian?:haha: Sheesh I don't wanna waste that much money trying to dig up some past Dokic matches (i've seen Andy enough times, no need to order matches from 2001, early 2002:p)

Andy-Marat at 2004 Thailand for sure!!

7-6 6-7 7-6

Great tennis, great heart! small aberration in the 2nd set TB but this one is for sure a keeper!

OK I broke down and bought it off that site you posted on Ebay Danielle... the guy selling it is from right here in LA so it came like lightning. I of course had to watch so I put it on while I made dinner and did the dishes and all that type of stuff so I wouldn't feel too guilty

What an AMAZING match. Just amazing, like we all knew it was.

First of all, after seeing the match with my own eyes it was no wonder he had absolutely nothing left for the final - Andy was tired in the whole third set, right from the opening game, I honestly don't know how he pulled it out. you could just see the exhaustion on his face... but except for a few points here and there, it didn't really reflect in his game. Gotta love that adrenaline I guess lol

Some observations:

~Andy hit about 4 really nice dropshots. one of them was a backhand from the baseline :hearts:
~Andy volleyed a lot and he volleyed pretty well. There was one in particular that after it he kinda smirked in that "how did I get that one in" sort of way
~About three or four times he hit amazing running shots. Y'know, the classic Andy on the run. At least one of them was a backhand.
~speaking of the devil, his backhand was quite solid, it kept him in a lot of rallies, and he didn't seem to overuse the slice as much (and you guys know how I ABHOR the slice!). Marat was attacking it as everyone does and I thought it held up well. He hit many throughout the match that were really hard and even helped him win points. It proves to me that when he hits his backhand freely, you can really see the improvement (think the Miami match against Spadea). He really needs to just keep working on it - I believe that it has improved, but the "new and improved" backhand seems to not always want to rear its head. But it needs to, I'd say his backhand really helped him win this match.
~he really just went for his shots, especially in the third set TB. I definitely agree with Marat and Fumigator that he was hitting freely, you could just kinda tell he was swinging relaxed. towards that end, the mental strength he showed in the third was great. After the horrendous 2nd set TB (which was a combo of a couple of poor errors from Andy and a few GREAT points from Marat), he had a BP in his opening game in the third set and saved it with a HUMONGOUS high forehand.
~He really went for his 2nd serves. He did have 4 DF but they weren't at "Costly" times.
~He came in off Safin's second serves at least twice!

It's how I expect Andy to always play. He served solidly, his forehand and backhand were both working, he didn't have too many really stupid errors, he was moving really well, he was coming to net a lot, and he was mixing it up well like with the drop shots, slices, and he tried a couple lobs. That combined with the mental strength he showed... I wish it weren't too much to ask him to always play like this. It didn't really seem like he was playing that much harder or whatever than usual, so I stand by my analysis that he strained his elbow just from the jetlag/fatigue.

After watching this match, though, I really wonder why he was able to do this all here and was so flat in the USO QF. Obviously the magnitude of the matches is incomparable but it still makes me  a little. It's like this little tourney in Thailand where he went in with no expectations really allowed him to totally relax and play so much better. I wish he could have that kind of mindset in all his matches! And, it really was kind of weird to NOT see him continually looking up at Brad lol

Definitely on my Top 10 Andy Matches list. And I think Marat fans would like the match as well because he really played wonderfully, too. :)

:worship: Thanks Deb
Great to hear he played well, hopefully he can keep it going in the next few weeks!! Guess we will never know the really reason for him being so flat at the USO, lets hope he doesnt repeat that anytime soon. Since we havnt heard anything else about his elbow I am hoping it was just fatigue..

Thank you Deb.
It sounds nice match. I want to see!

I think Andy is talented and he is capable but he still needs the time to figure out when he raise up the level.

tangy it's so hard to say what Marat's level was in comparsion, b/c I haven't watched that match since it happened so long ago. I'd say it was probably close. I'd say they both played close to the level they did at the AO, and of course that match could've gone either way and so could this one. I think the difference in this match was that Andy was mentally better and in the third set he could really put aside his fatigue and go for his shots in the tiebreaker. he hit one forehand.... it's the kind that Naldo would drool over.
