<--note the avatar, lol

I listen to mostly hip hop (Em, 50, Dre, Pac, DMX...but if I have to hear anything by Ja Rule even one more time I'm gonna shoot myself. He's a joke and an insult to the art form, lol) but I'm open to hearing other stuff too.

sorry, not really my thing.. I like stuff a little more upbeat and less serious. They're real talented though.

I'd like to join the shooting party on that one lol. I don't like hip-hop that much either but the ones with talent deserve a ton of respect. Ja Rule is just a joke though.

:notworthy: ...congrats, you just moved up about 5 rungs on the ladder of people I respect, lmao. The guy is bastardizing music I swear. He can't write for shit. It really pisses me off to see someone like that so successful in the mainstream cuz some poor kid is gonna hear that and think that it's real hip hop and it's not. Meanwhile a lot of people that aren't real serious rap fans have never even heard of Rakim...the dude is freakin poet. *sighs*

I'm gonna stop now before I start ranting cuz I could go for days on the issue.

C'mon now. A disgrace?? Props for recognizing Em's talent but there are a lot of rappers out there who have meaning. Don't let the ones who are polluting the airwaves with their crap a la Ja define the music for you cuz they're not what it's really about. Don't be callin it crap, lol, cuz I will defend it till the day I die. I'm an mc myself so yeah, you're calling what I do crap too.

But I am a hardcore teenybopper! Hard to the core! Core to the right!!! POP rocks my world..

anyway, my loves... Christina Aguilera and Fiona Apple

then I love anything, particularly like mellow movie soundtrack songs, and songs from classic films

lol Mrs. Guga, rock on!

I just like the fun kinda meaningless music that's just a great pick-me-up. Anything I can sing along to at the top of my lungs is good ;)

I care about all music though. I want to be a music lawyer so I really stay up on the business side of it and I like to follow new artists, record sales, etc etc. It's my hobby :)

Right now in the car, I've got Cheb Mami on, and Izzy waiting in the wings (not so thrilled with her though) and Cesoria Evore and Yo Yo Ma and some Cuban guy and Rod Stewart and then a two CD compilation called World 2002

I don't like Hip Hop and rap as well. It doesn't appeal to me for every possible reasons. :) It's probably just a question of image and "culture". Just by seeing some videos, it's enough for me to never want to listen to hip hop or rap.

As for pop music, I'm not snubbing it, but it's no fun for me in general. I like a pop song every 2 years like "All The Things She Said" but that's about it. I exposed myself to more than 4 hours in a row of dance music and pop in a gay club and I wanted to die. :) I had to compensate when I arrived home with some Korn, System of a Down songs and such. ;) And again it's also a question of image. Just seeing someone like Christina Aguilera, she looks so vulgar, it disgusts me enough to never want to hear one of her songs.

So I pretty much like alternative, alternative metal kind of music.

As for Coldplay, I find more exciting doing this: :tennis:I than listening to a Coldplay song. But it's just personnal. ;)

REM I love any song from that compilation Eponymous ("older" REM), and Automatic for the People, Monster, New Adventures in Hi-Fi. yeah, pablo honey's a good first album. Have you heard Radiohead's CDs "Kid A" and "Amnesiac?" If so, what do you think? I really like them, they are extremely creative, but some people think they went over the top in the experimental direction. There certainly aren't as many "tunes", but it's fascinating imo.

God, I'll listen to just about anything with a melody, from pop (Britney) to hip-hop (OutKast) to hard rock (Tool) to whateva.

But I guess most of the stuff I listen to can be classified as "indie," or "alternative," or "college rock." Stuff that is a bit more experimental, I suppose.

Right now my favorite bands are the Dandy Warhols, Interpol, the Raveonettes, Sahara Hotnights, Le Tigre, the Polyphonic Spree, and others. Travis, Coldplay, and Radiohead of course are big favorites of mine and have been for a long time.

Elastica and Garbage have been my ultimate favorites for a while, but Elastica has broken up and Garbage hasn't put out a new release for a while.

Yeah. I'm with you on this one. I guess you could admire someone more because they were able to write their own music, but in the end it is the music that counts. Particularly with popular music.

I think sometimes that people get more pulled into the music because they think that they are seeing into the band's soul when they know the band members have written the song.

But MUSIC!! That is what I adore. That's why I like songs in foreign languages. The lyrics don't get in the way. I can just listen to pure music.

thats not true..im sorry but my views are different than yours...lyrics are a HUGE part to the song...not saying that the melody isnt...because it is...and thats why i like the music i do..is because all if it has such attention to melody AND lyrics...for ex radiohead...they're not just making they're cds with fill ins and what everyone want to hears but they're songs come from them and they're melodies are made by the instruments they play...if i heard a song and i really liked the melody but the lyrics were shit i wouldnt like the song...for ex. take the melody of nice dream by radiohead and put...you can find me in the club bottle full of bub mama i got what you need...i aint into having sex im into making love...:spit:...mainstream is so awful these days...and if the artists keep staying like 50cent and brittney spears than no one will know good music..and its unfortunate:sad:

I know what you are saying and words are wonderful in music too. I was on a trip recently listening to Sophie Von Otter's CD produced by Elvis Costello and some of those words are lingering in my head all the time. "Seasons can turn on a dime. Somehow I forget every time. Summer is gone, but our love remains like old broken bicycles left in the rain.....The things that you gave me will always stay. They're broken but I'll never give them away."

It doesn't matter to me that neither she nor Elvis wrote them.

BUT!!!!!! For PURE FUN, this is the song that "shakes my ass." MI BOMBON by Cabas I can listen to it over and over. See if you can find it and download it. It's not a good shot, but darn it is GOOD. It starts slow and builds and builds with layers of music and excitement.
I challenge you to sit still with it.

And Andylove.... I am so proud of you that you resist pop music. :)

You just go and carve your own way with your musical tastes. There is SO much out there. There is just an unbelievable wealth of great music from all over the world and from all different eras and centuries. There's music for fun and for tears and for serious listening and for exploration. You can just add and add to all of the music you love. The more you like, the more you will find to like. :)

what are you talking about credibility...i am sincere in liking coldplay..and quite frankly i dont care if you think that i dont love their music..because i know i do...and what are you saying about me liking them differently if they didnt write their songs..of course i would like them differently.let me give you an ex. what happened when all the fans found out that milli vanilli werent using their voices...its not the same...yeah they might have liked the beats of the music and the lyrics but when you find out that it isnt the artists music than its not the same...i dont like bands just because its fun to be a fan or i like the idea of it...i truly like the music...i dont know how i can make this sound genuine all i know is that i realize what im feeling..thats all that matters in the end:yeah:

Of course, it would be different if they lied and said they wrote the music when they didn't... that would be like Milli vanilli.

But, what if from the beginning you knew they didn't write the music, would that make a difference to you?

Or is part of what you like about them the fact that one of them actually writes the music? Does that add to your enjoyment of them as the makers of music? Or does that only increase your admiration for their/his creative abilities?

hmmmm... I never question anyone's music choices. It's one of the most personal things in my life and I get extraordinarily offended when people knock my music preferences so I'd never ever ever question another's preferences.

Guess I follow the same personal protocol for tennis players. I'd never knock another person's choice in a fave player, even if I don't like the player myself. Which begs the question, why do people on this board have such a difficult time with letting people have their own opinions and just leaving it be? lol

I don't know. I mean sometimes I think less of a person because of their musical tastes.

For instance, I know a woman who doesn't like any music that has a female singer. I think that is just plain weird. She also likes christian popular music. I don't think the music is necessarily bad music, but it's kind of weird to be singing about God in a sexy sort of way. I don't talke to her about this though. She doesn't particularly care for the music I like either. Well, for one thing I listen to women as well as men, and she can't understand most of the lyrics, and most of the music is stuff she has never heard before. She also listens to music out of awful speakers that distort all the sound. She doesn't mind. She just like to have some music like noise in the background. The distortion drives me nuts.

well those are specific instances. To not like music sung by a female? hmmm.....that's a new one lol.

I meant more of what I've been derided for. I like music like the Backstreet Boys, Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson, etc. Just fun sing-along type stuff. So of course I think they are all talented singers/songwriters, etc. but lots and lots of people disagree (very much parallels my fan-hood of Andy I guess lol) and since music for me is so personal I am very sensitive when people say "I can't believe you like that person they suck" type thing (not that anyone did that here, but it's been done to me a LOT!).

You like Jessica Simpson?????

lol

Anyway, I don't know any popular music. I've given up listening to the radio........ well, it's not like living here there is any access to a popular music station unless you have cable radio, but still, I just have no interest. When I do hear any of it when I go to the city, I can't listen to very much of it.

I did like that one song that Hurley put me on to... I don't remember the name but it had this refrain, "I walk from my machine." I liked that a lot. Actually, I should just let Hurley tell me what to listen to. :)

I do love to sing along with music.

That's why I like Sophie Von Otter. She sings in my key. :)

i have to admit to disagreing with peoples musical tastes and getting into agruments about it...for ex...my sister was saying how much she wanted to see 3doors down in concert and how much she wanted to see pink....i told her what i felt since she wanted to start up a conversation about it or so i thought..i told her have you heard them live...they cant carry a tune..and pink has to get someone else to play the guitar for her...thats just pure talent...i would not pay 60$ to see them in concert...she got really mad and she said well i like their voices:scared:..lol...and i guess her type of music is just more raspy.....but you know i give something a try so this doesnt mean i am subjective..i just dont find these people to have much talent...o well...but i wont just say something out of the blue if they begin to talk about an artist or i overhear them listening to "mercy me" on the radio..but inside i find myself wondering why they dont give my music a
chance:confused:

On a related philosophical note, what if someone is a total jerk but a tremendous musical talent? Lots of historical examples to choose from. Like Richard Wagner being anti-semitic, for example. But he was clearly a great genius too. Should it matter? Whaddaya think?

im not sure..i mean i used to like some of john mayers stuff...but then i found out that he was this total jerk to his fans and he didnt appreciate them..so i kind of backed off..and i dont really like his music anymore..and if it was the other way around as someone was a jerk and then i found out that they had great taste in music..i do think i would respect them for their music knowledge but that wouldnt change the fact that they were a complete shitbag..lol..what do you think MisterQ?

I think it's a tough question, and I don't have an absolute answer. I may respect an artist less because of their actions, but the musician in me responds regardless. So some people just get put in that category of 'brilliant jerks' and I guess I leave it at that! lol But my absolute favorite musicians tend to be admirable both on and off the musical stage.

I didn't know that about John Mayer, actually. He seems so "sensitive" on his albums, lol!
