New Deal Begins with Live Coverage of U.S. vs. Romania from the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club on February 10-12

Andy Roddick, James Blake and World No. 1 Doubles Team Bob and Mike Bryan to Lead U.S. Team

White Plains, NY, February 7, 2006 - - The USTA, in conjunction with the ITF, today announced that OLN and The Tennis Channel will be the domestic television broadcasters for all U.S. Davis Cup action in 2006. The new agreement begins February 10-12, with complete live television coverage of the 2006 first round U.S. Davis Cup competition, including full, live coverage and same-day, prime-time replays of all matches. The Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, an ITF event, is the largest annual international team competition in world sport. Featuring 133 nations, 16 countries qualify for the elite World Group each year.

OLN is now in 63 million homes nationwide, and is the cable home of the NHL and the Tour de France. The Tennis Channel is the only 24-hour TV destination dedicated to tennis.

Coverage from La Jolla is as follows:

Friday, February 10, at 2 PM ET: The Tennis Channel will present complete live coverage of the first two singles matches in La Jolla, Calif. A full replay of these matches will begin at 8 PM ET on The Tennis Channel.
Saturday, February 11, at 4 PM ET: OLN will present exclusive live coverage of the doubles match between the U.S. and Romania. The U.S. doubles match will be replayed on The Tennis Channel at 8 PM ET.
Sunday, February 12, at 2 PM ET: OLN will provide live coverage of the first singles match. If the tie is not decided at the conclusion of the first match, OLN will broadcast the second singles match until 5 PM ET, when live coverage will shift to The Tennis Channel until the conclusion of the second match. The Tennis Channel will then air a replay of the day’s competition at 8 PM ET.
In subsequent rounds this year, OLN will provide live coverage of the U.S. Davis Cup home tie competitions to be followed by same-day replays on The Tennis Channel. Scheduling of away tie broadcasts will be contingent on the country of origin.

“We're thrilled to partner with OLN and The Tennis Channel to bring live Davis Cup coverage to over 60 million homes throughout the country," said Arlen Kantarian, Chief Executive, Professional Tennis, USTA. “This partnership was created to ensure complete, live coverage of all U.S. Davis Cup action, and to more effectively promote the special brand of team competition that Davis Cup provides.”

“At OLN we are all about competition, and there’s nothing quite like country vs. country rivalries to bring out a fan’s patriotic pride," said Gavin Harvey, President of OLN. ”Partnering with The Tennis Channel allows fans unprecedented access to a storied tennis championship.”

“Between OLN and The Tennis Channel, tennis fans won’t miss a minute of U.S. Davis Cup action with matches presented as a single program across two networks,” said Ken Solomon, chairman and CEO, The Tennis Channel. “The Davis Cup is tennis’ Ryder Cup and World Cup rolled into one - - and deserves the broad reach of OLN combined with the prime-time coverage from the only network serving the tennis audience 24/7/365.”

The Davis Cup telecast partnership between OLN and The Tennis Channel will remain in place throughout 2006, as long as the U.S. team continues to advance in this year’s competition. Should the U.S. team defeat Romania in La Jolla, it would host the winner of the first round tie between Chile and the 2005 Davis Cup runner-up Slovak Republic, April 7-9.

U.S. Davis Cup Captain Patrick McEnroe recently announced World No. 3 Andy Roddick, James Blake, who, at No. 20, is at his career-high ranking, and World No. 1 doubles team and 2006 Australian Open doubles champions, Bob and Mike Bryan.

Romanian Davis Cup Captain Florin Segarseanu has named No. 40 Victor Hanescu, No. 82 Andrei Pavel, No. 104 Razvan Sabau and No. 401 Horia Tecau to play in La Jolla.

U.S. Davis Cup team sponsor AIG will be the presenting sponsor of all U.S. Davis Cup broadcasts on OLN and The Tennis Channel. Founded in 1900, Davis Cup is the world’s largest annual international team competition with 133 teams competing this year.

Wow, I actually get OLN too...

Apparently OLN is showing Davis Cup on Sat. 4-8 PM and Sun. 2-5 PM. I'm assuming the USA tie - wonder what announcers they will use :) I'm guessing they aren't showing the first day at all?

Here's the story from on the OLN coverage
By Matthew Cronin,

We'll dive into tournament play in a moment, but first this news flash: has learned that the Outdoor Life Network (OLN) has signed a contract with the USTA which gives Comcast's growing sports network the rights to telecast US Davis Cup home ties.

OLN, which is said to be in 60 million homes, will begin broadcasting live this Saturday from the US-Romania tie in La Jolla, Calif. The Tennis Channel will broadcast on Friday and then run tape delays of Saturday and Sunday's matches. OLN will also telecast Sunday's matches live. OLN won't send it's own crew but use TTC's production and broadcast teams. Should the US beat Romania, OLN will broadcast all three days of the US's quarterfinal against either Chile or Slovakia.

This is random, but does anyone know if Espn or Espn2 is planning on covering Davis cup. They usually do, and I assumed they were going to but i just checked the schedule and it's not listed? I almost positive they showed a lot of the davis cup last year, and the year before that. Any word?

02-08-2006, 07:24 PM Behind The Microphone For Davis Cup This Weekend
By Tennis Week

John McEnroe will make a Davis Cup comeback behind the microphone. The former U.S. Davis Cup captain and owner of five American Davis Cup records returns to Davis Cup competition this weekend in LaJolla, California as the analyst for The Tennis Channel and Outdoor Life Network's Davis Cup coverage of the United States' opening-round tie against Romania.

A member of five Davis Cup championship teams, McEnroe joins The Tennis Channel’s lead play-by-play broadcaster Leif Shiras in the broadcast booth. It is McEnroe’s first stint as an analyst on either network and marks the second straight year he will call a Davis Cup tie.

A year ago, McEnroe partnered with Cliff Drysdale as the tennis analyst for ESPN's telecasts of Croatia's upset victory over the host United States in the opening round. The 46-year-old McEnroe, who preceded younger brother Patrick as U.S. captain, once selected Andy Roddick as a practice partner for the Davis Cup squad and will share his thoughts on Roddick's latest coaching change during the tie.

McEnroe called it quits as U.S. Davis Cup captain in the aftermath of Spain sweeping a depleted U.S. squad featuring Todd Martin, Jan-Michael Gambill, Chris Woodruff and Vince Spadea on the red clay courts of Santander in July of 2000. Both Pete Sampras and Agassi, who led the U.S. to a 3-2 victory over the Czech Republic in the 2000 quarterfinals, withdrew from the semis citing injuries. McEnroe has told Tennis Week in past interviews that a lack of complete commitment from top American stars as well as a lack of support from the USTA for his proposed John McEnroe tennis academy for top juniors contributed to his decision to step down as captain.

The man who established American Davis Cup records for most years played (12), most ties played (30), most total wins (59-10), most singles wins (41-8) and most total matches played (59) in leading the U.S. to five Davis Cup championships in his distinguished career was a member of the U.S. dream team that included Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras and Jim Courier and beat Switzerland to capture the Cup in 1992.

The Comcast-owned OLN reaches about 63 million homes nationally. OLN is best known as the cable television home of the National Hockey League — it began televising NHL games this season — and as the domestic home of the Tour de France. This weekend's Davis Cup television schedule is as follows (all times are Eastern):

Friday, February 10th: The Tennis Channel will present complete live coverage of the opening singles matches starting at 2 p.m. The Tennis Channel will air a complete replay of both singles matches starting at 8 p.m.

Saturday, February 11th: OLN will televise the doubles match between Americans Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan and the Romanian team, which could be Andrei Pavel and Victor Hanescu, live starting at 4 p.m. The Tennis Channel will replay the doubles match starting at 8 p.m.

Sunday, February 12th: OLN will televise the first reverse singles match live starting at 2 p.m. If the tie is not decided by the conclusion of this match, OLN will broadcast the second singles match, which is the final match of the tie, live until 5 p.m. when coverage will transfer to The Tennis Channel — a move that could certainly frustrate viewers who do not get the Tennis Channel, but one OLN tells Tennis Week is necessary because OLN is contractually obligated to begin its NHL coverage (Avalanche vs. Red Wings) at 5 p.m.
