McEnroe calls out Roddick on 'SNL'

By Tom Clark, USA TODAY

NEW YORK — You get the feeling John McEnroe didn't need cue cards when he played a heckler on Saturday Night Live last week. As young tennis star and SNL host Andy Roddick was performing his monologue, McEnroe interrupted:

"I can't believe they're letting you host," McEnroe said. "You're a punk! You're not funny! I could do better than you! I was No. 1 for four years! You've been No. 1 for like four days! I won seven majors; you got one! God, and I'm in the audience? I'm outta here!"

He wasn't gone for long, participating in a few more sketches. Lorne Michaels, SNL's executive producer, says he's a longtime fan of McEnroe.

"I've always wanted him on the show, and with Andy hosting, it was a good chance to invite him on," Michaels said of McEnroe.

At Friday's rehearsal, McEnroe showed he could be just as opinionated and brash with writers and comics as he was with umpires during his playing days. At one point the 44-year-old tennis commentator took issue with a line calling for him to do a bad imitation of Jim from the old Taxi comedy series.

McEnroe wondered aloud if anyone would get the joke, so he made other suggestions, huddled with SNL star Jimmy Fallon and others and emerged with a new bad imitation — "Heeere's Johnny!" in the voice of Jack Nicholson from The Shining.

Despite all the ribbing, McEnroe and Roddick, who played Davis Cup when McEnroe was captain, are good friends.

And it's not like turnabout isn't fair play. During the U.S. Open, McEnroe was hosting a call-in show on USA Network when Roddick phoned in as "Andy from Flushing."

Roddick proceeded to make fun of McEnroe's white socks/black suit attire. "I wasn't going to let him get away with that," Roddick said. "He's a good sport."
