in the (no longer existing) race he is 10th :D

Mae you did the right thing starting this thread. Tommy has points to defend at San Jose (which he is not playing this year) and Memphis (which he is) so the next few weeks will be up and down and all around. It's good that we will have a place to keep track of it all.

Fee

Actually Mae, its kind of easy. All you have to do is start a fan site for a player that you become friends with, then spend the next two years of your life trying to figure out all this rankings stuff ;)

Seriously, the easiest way to start is to look at Tommy's activity page at the ATP website and see how well he did last year. Start on his profile page:

http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/playerprofiles/default2.asp?playernumber=H355

click on 'his activity' on the right side, pick the year and click on Singles. Then you can see that he got to the Semi's of San Jose and Memphis, so he got points for that. Points are good for 52 weeks, so those points will come off in February and he will need to earn points to make up for it. So every Sunday night, the ATP subtracts some points, and adds more. Hope that helps a little bit, but I've kind of confused myself now.

{Hope no one else minds, Mae is a relatively new tennis fan and is learning all the technical stuff, so I try to help her whenever it comes up in conversation}.

Of course Tommy has a good chance to get his ranking up a lot. Just remember 2004 where he started non-ranked in February during his first tournaments and then ended at #17 or something near the end of the year. He has no really big Grand Slam results, nothing mentionable coming from the Masters tournaments. So he has lots of possibilities to gain significant points. For February he will lose some of his biggest ranking items of 2005, the two semifinals which are worth around 200 points I guess. But apart from that he should be in a good position. The problem is now he just needs to deliver and stay healthy  Lets see...

I think the thread is a great idea Mae :)

Tommy can move up by the end of February. He will pick up points from Delray because he didn't play there last year. He will lose his SF points at San Jose, he has a chance to play Memphis and match his SF there, but he has a chance to pick up points in Las Vegas (which was Scottsdale last year). He lost in the first round last year when he had the flu, so he should get some points there (and he could be seeded). I also think with a good draw, he could pick up a round in Indian Wells and get some points there.

I'm also kinda new!! I do know a lot of things already, but it's never wrong to read explanations!! If someone has a problem with it, then he/she just doesn't read the thread.. ;) but i'm happy you started this!! i was curious myself too!!
so thanks fee&neely for the explanations :D

Mae, sounds like you are looking at the Champions Race. Ignore that, it doesn't really mean anything right now. Look at the Entry Rankings, that's the one that is used for tournament entries and for seedings at tournaments, and those are the 'points he has to defend.' It will be updated later on today when all tournaments (including Challengers) have finished and posted their final results to the ATP offices.

This week, Tommy earned 175 points for winning Delray, and I don't think he lost any since he didn't play last year. He is 30th in the rankings this week, and this win could move him up to about 26 or 27 (depending on the points of the other guys around him. I always underestimate).

This page might help you a little bit (or confuse you even more, hard to say :D ).

Like Fee says Tommy earned 175 points for winning this tournament.
Because these 175 points are now among his best five optional events (a player can only cumulate points to his ranking of the five best optional events), his San Jose SF points (75 points) from last year will not count anymore to his ranking beginning from tomorrow (they would have fallen off the week beginning Feb. 13th anyway).
175 points - 75 points = 100 net points won this week
He entered the week with 940 points, so he should have 1040 by tomorrow (Monday) when you check the ATP site and the updated rankings there. And I can't think of any player around Tommy having some impact on his ranking, so what Pricebaseliner said that he will be #29 should be correct (lets see), but the 1040 should be correct, I guess.
That's all the maths for this week, Mae. ;)

Fee
02-06-2006, 12:30 AM
Thanks Neely, I was way off on my guess. I thought he could keep San Jose for one more week. I've missed a result somewhere. Looks like he will only move up one place after all, bummer.

By 'the players around him' I meant that I had no idea if any of them were losing points or had points to defend or whatever. Sometimes a player you are not looking at didn't play that week and loses points, clearing a space for someone else.

Exactly. I know what you mean, and we were thinking of the same. Now I understand how misleading and unprecise my wording of 'the having impact' sentence from above was.

Fee

Yes, I re-read your post and we were thinking the same thing. :D

Well, if Tommy plays well in Memphis (after recovering from Davis Cup) to match those points, I will keep my fingers crossed that he can stay healthy and do well in Las Vegas and Indian Wells in March. I think that is where he can pick up points and really move up the rankings.

Fee

I think he does :) And surely he is getting pissed as well ;)

Deboogle!.
04-04-2006, 04:44 PM
I have often wondered how closely players keep up with their ranking? But if Tommy is watching his I hope he doesn't get discouraged over it because he started out so well and then everything started to happen to him so he didn't get the true benefit of his great start :sad:Maybe they do a little bit, but I think most players would tell you that they'd rather be consistently playing well and winning matches - because obviously if that's happening their ranking will go up, AND it means they're playing well and progressing. I really really doubt they go to the ATP site and look at how many points they defended or anything like that.

 I would like to think if I had the talent to be a Pro Player that I would just try to do my best and win Matches
which would led to Tournaments titles. But I think somewhere in the back of my mind would be my ranking  Because it seems like in tennis the numbers are pretty much always there--your seeding in a Tournament, etc. So I don't think I could escape it
exactly.. you can't run and you can't hide from it
but if tommy wil win Houston for example.. then it's important for him to know if it did something to his ranking.. because then maybe he is sure of not facing federer in an early round already! (do you know what i mean?)

Or can you figure out ranking on your own? I can't :silly: And I'm still just too upset about Houston. That title was going to be his and then he gets hurt :crying2:

25 is already after the semi in Houston. He withdrew from Monte Carlo, so we have to look forward to Munich now, he has to defend a Semi there too.

:haha: it's like i could've said this aswell

i thought about what alexiana said, but what i think is: eventhough tommy didn't have points to defend, there might have been a player at #26(or 27), who also didn't have to defend points, but in stead of not playing, he got to the SF for example.
I don't know the difference between tommy & #26, but the number 26 could have won more points than the difference and that would cause a switch in ranking.....

right?! or am i talking really stupid now?? :o

Yes that much I know about the rankings. It sometimes not only depends on what a player does, but what other players around him do also. Players can get bumped up or down depending on what the players around them are doing. That doesn't really sound fair, but I guess it all works itself out by the end of the season.

I think Mario Ancic withdrew from the Us Open. That should bring Tommy nearer to the 8th spot, cause he is 5th in the race. And what about Stepanek? Did he play Cincy? Is he injured? I can't believe he even is in the Top 10...

I think Ancic is out but i don't know what happens with Stepanek. He didn't play Toronto/Cincy. But there are some players behind Tommy who got some points this week...Robredo, Ferrer, Gonzo and Arod is back.

So he went up one spot in the rankings and down one spot in the race. Isn't he losing 20 points from New Haven this week? Edit: Only from the non-countable tournaments. Oh, well, Hewitt's defending a whole lot more at the US Open.

According to GM, both Ancic and Stepanek are out of the US Open, and since I haven't heard anything about Hewitt's injury I assume he's playing.

I heard Hewitts Knee exploded ????? Its probably as bad for him as Tommy's shoulder problems i reckon, cos Hewitts biggest weapon (in fact his whole game pretty much) is his court speed which is directly linked to his ability to "fight" through matches.

Yes, the most recent article in the Hewitt Davis Cup thread in GM sounded extremely pessimistic. Hewitt's not my favorite player, but I don't like seeing anyone injured. :( My hope now is that if he's going to withdraw anyway, he'll do it in time for Agassi to be seeded.

Yes and I think he would have beaten Davydenko if he wouldn't have had to play so much tennis in such a short time  :mad:I'm sure he would have. He played two five-setters that went all the way to a tiebreak, and the very next day after beating Safin went out to play against Davydenko. He won the first two sets but didn't have the energy to win a third. That's too much to ask. Even when Ginepri and Agassi had their great five-set runs last year, they never had to play two in as many days.

I do think the rain helped Tommy beat Safin, though, because as someone pointed out it gave him a chance to rest and Safin a chance to think (never a good thing  ); I just wish he had had a day off before playing Davydenko.

Who the rain really messed with, more than anyone else in the draw, was poor Marat.

And now we will never know what would have happened. if the rain hadn't started. I still like to think that Tommy would have won anyway,

You know in other sports, (i'll compare it to swimming because that's why i did) ppl on the tv also complain about not enough time between matches..
when i was younger i used to swim a lot and went to tournaments where i had to take part in about 8 to 10 matches a weekend!
Now, when the professionals have to swim 2 or 3 matches a day, it is SO MUCH in SO LITTLE time.. (that's what they say on tv)..

my point is, i think the tennis players can play much more than we think because they train a lot and it's their job!

I know his foot was definitely bothering him during that Match. But I haven't heard anything about it since so I hope it wasn't serious.

mae i thought that tommy is known as one of the most well conditioned players on tour??? and come on 3 5 setters, nah thats alot to ask, ALOT to ask especially with todays players, so many baseline rallies, at least in the past, even a few years ago, guys could serve and volley when they got tired or they wanted to conserve energy, but the courts and tennis balls are so much slower and heavier today as well, its too difficult.

And then u gotta remeber that he played quality players too, not just a qualifier who had 2 or 3 hot sets, Nalbandian had 2 then lost to marat, marat had 2 then lost to tommy, tommy had 3? then lost to nikolay in 5 who lost the next round, it was the curse of the draw :P

Yes we call Tommy our "Drama Queen". I don't think he would like that title much, but it does seem to fit. And with all those 5 set Matches he played at the U.S. Open I would have to say his conditioning is good. I really think Tommy's worse problem at the U.S. Open was not even the draw as much as it was the rain. The rain forced Tommy's part of the draw to play a lot of tennis in a very short amount of time  And no matter how good of condition a player is in they can't keep that pace up forever! Right now Tommy seems to be bothered by small, but nagging injuries. At the last Match he played at the U.S. Open it was his foot. And then at the Davis Cup it was his leg. And even earlier in the season he had a wrist problem, food poisoning, allergies, shoulder tightness, etc.
Of course, he really has to watch that shoulder due to his past medical history with that. Here I was worried about the shoulder and foot at the Davis Cup due to all the playing at the U.S. Open and Tommy comes up with a leg problem. And sad to say Tommy is not getting any younger
