Team Sweden:

Coria is not playing, so Sweden has less chances...
Maybe Soderling and doubles can take 2 points. But I don't see Tojo beating Gaudio or David on clay.

 So you're actually picturing Söderling winning a match?! I'm more expecting him to self-destruct, going Kiefer square on somebody's ass, inciting the crowd, causing a scandal. :D ;)

I was just reminding the last match I saw with him on clay. He beat Nalbandian in Hamburg. David wasn't well, but it was a win.

Everything else than a victory for Argentina would be a little miracle!
I think if one Swede has a chance in the singles it would be Thomas :) He has played some great matches on clay last year and if he will play in that shape, I am sure he will have a chance!

Aphex, do you know on which channel they will broadcast the tie in Sweden?

The problem in Sweden is that tennis is not as popular as before, so it's very difficult to find some news in the Swedish newspapers. And, with the Olympics, it will be more difficult. I think the Swedes tennis players won't have any pressure from the Swedish press, the whole country will watch the ski (alpine and cross-country), ice-hockey etc.. Maybe, it's better for their preparation. Any way, good luck to them :bounce:

Söderling ready to play DC

It will probably be Robin Söderling and Thomas Johansson who play the singles rubbers in the DC match against Argentina this weekend. The third candidate, Jonas Björkman, says himself he'd rather focus on the doubles since clay is not his favourite surface.
-Well, I hope Thomas and Robin both will feel so fresh and strong they can play. I think they have clearly the best qualities to beat these guys.

Draw on Friday
He doesn't think his attacking style will work on clay against some of the world's best players on the surface. Björkman will instead set his sights on the doubles together with Simon Aspelin, it seems.

The draw for the DC match, which will commence with singles play on Friday, is to be done Thursday afternoon.

In the Argentinean team, world #4, David Nalbandian, is set for one of the singles spots and in form José Acasuso is tipped to be the second choice, although Juan Ignacio Chela is as good a player. In doubles, Nalbandian will probably pair up with Augustin Calleri.

Sweden's DC opponent Argentina is tainted by all doping revelaions the last couple of years.
-We have suffered and we still suffer from what has happened. The rest of the world look upon us differently nowadays, says Argentinean captain Alberto Mancini.

Argentina is one of the very best nations in tennis, having three players in the top 10 and 10 in the top 100 players of the world. But it could have been even better if it were not for the doping revelations which have made the rest of the world doubt the succes.

Six of Mancini's players have been caught doping in the 00's - but in the present DC team only Juan Ignacio Chela has been suspended.

"Too harsh punishment"
The hardest blow came last year when RG 05 finalist Mariano Puerta was suspended 8 years for the second offence of doping in his career. A too harsh punishment according to Mancini.

-I think doping is partly due to negligence and lack of information on behalf of the player. But it's also a very fine line which is easy to cross if you're not careful, says captain Mancini.

He is also critical of another high class top 10 ranked Argentinean, Guillermo Canas, being banned for two years last year after a first time offence.

The people supports
Buenos Aires citizens who you meet in the ice-cream parlour, the subway or strolling in one of the city's parks mostly support their tennis stars and they don't want to think Argentineans are bigger cheaters than athletes from the rest of the world.

-If you consider tennisplayers on both the men's and the ladies' tours, I think all of them are doped, says Marcelo who is eating ice-cream in a bar in the Palermo area with some friends in their 50's.

Somewhat further away sits teenager Uriel together with his father. The young one talks fast and intensively when tennis comes up.

-At first I thought it was a conspiracy against Argentina but now I'm trying to accept it's our players' mistake, says Uriel and looks distressed.

Björkman feels sorry for Nalbandian
The Swedes on place in Buenos Aires don't direct any stern criticism on the Argentinean doping issue instead they put forth a theory that incompetent doctors and nonchanlant players together have been unaware of their cheating.

Moreover, Jonas Björkman feels sorry for world #4, Nalbandian who hasn't done any doping.
-I think it's tough for the Argentineans who are clean and who work very hard to achieve success to not receive their due "credit".

I disagree, I think both ToJo and Söderling have enough firepower. I think it's their movement on clay which is their main problem. Robin is a bit heavy and Thomas can't slide.

The court will be very slow, then again somehow Toad managed to beat Nalle in Hamburg. At the same time it will be a lot warmer than in Hamburg.

ToJo is solid, but I see Chucho winning his match as well.

Söderling starts against Nalbandian

Robin Söderling's knee holds up and he will start the Davis Cup match against Argentina by meeting world #4 David Nalbandian on Buenos Aires' clay. "Nalbandian will be surprised by how good Robin is", says Sweden's captain Mats Wilander

Three sure signs DC is on:
1/ How good Sweden's team spirit is.
2/ A coach who says: "he's looking good at practice"
3/ Mats Wilander is positive when nobody else is.

In 1983 Sweden won safely 4-1 in Davis Cup against Argentina. Nobody counts on a win for Sweden again when the teams face off this weekend. Nobody except possibly captain Wilander. The born optimist.
-I usually say it's a 50-50 match, and so I say now (3). We feel tight as a team(1) and practises have been damn good(2).

Wilander has been taken for a fool before. Many rolled their eyes when the captain, before the away tie against Australia 2004, said Sweden had a good team to beat the world class team headed by Lleyton Hewitt. Three days later the Swedes had caused an upset in Adelaide and nobody dared to roll their eyes anymore. Willander himself was smiling gently in his Sweden motif cap. He could easily have said a "told you so", instead he focused on celebrating his players (mainly Jonas Björkman).

-We're kind of in the same position this time around, says Wilander. But we don't care nobody believes in us. We know what we can do. We know we're strong.

Robin Söderling has just come back from both a knee injury and illness. Hardly the best build up to play two tough five set matches on clay, but according to Wilander and his assistant coach, Joakim Nyström, teamselection was "probably the easiest ever".

-Robin has impressed a lot down here, nonetheless physically. He definitely won't lose on fitness, says Joakim Nyström.

-Nalbandian and the other Argentines know Robin has been injured. They will be surprised by how good and strong he is, Wilander believes.

Nalbandian will also play doubles for Argentina and that resposibility could prove tough for him physically as well as mentally.

-Even if Robin doesn't manage to win, it's important he keeps Nalbandian on the court for a long time to soften him up, says Mats Wilander.

Argentina lets, besides Nalbandian, José Acasuso make his DC debut, something which surprised Wilander, who thought Juan Ignacio Chela would play.

-There will be 10000 in the stands and hopefully Acasuso will get nervous from the pressure.

The match is big stuff in Buenos Aires. The venue is sold out, and the press conference Tuesday, was attended, according to Joakim Nyström, by more than 100 journalists.

-You sense how big tennis is in Argentina, says Nyström. But we're only inspired by the atmosphere. We're not the ones who are under pressure.

:worship: Mats and Jocke! You guys should play instead.

Maradona behind Söderling's loss

Robin Söderling lost the first DC singles rubber against Argentinean David Nalbandian. The world #4 won 3-6 6-2 6-4 6-1.

In the third set the players had a hard time holding their serve in the imposing heat. Fotballing legend Maradona, wearing a national team jersey and sunglasses, acted cheerleader and made the crowd go wild.

-I was in a good position and I felt I almost could win the third set, but it became very heavy mentally when I lost it, Söderling tells TT.

The Argentinean reserve player José Acasuso outclassed Thomas Johansson 6-1 6-1 6-3 and now Sweden is down taking the count.

The team is trailing 0-2 and now Jonas Björkman/ Simon Aspelin have to win the doubles tomorrow to keep the tie alive.

-There was only one man on the court. He was much better than me today and I had nothing to counter him with, says Thomas Johansson according to TT.

Mats Wilander said after the game that José Acasuso is the best player in the world. (Ok Mats, whatever you say)
