Seems Marat is working too hard to recover his form. Play some matches until the end of this year can be really good. Thanks Nicki! :)

Latest Marat News:
Breaking News! It seems Marat's plans are changing by the day. Here is the most current official information from his managers:

Marat has left Israel to return to Moscow. He is scheduled to play in a challenger event next week. Which one we do not know, but we will post that information here as soon as we get it! As far as I can tell there are 3 challengers next week, one in Ukraine, one in Finland and one in the USA. I would bet on the one in the Ukraine as it has the most prize money and I don't think Marat will be going to Austin Texas! If you live near there you may want to inquire with the tournament.

Paradorn Super Tour: Now we are getting news that Marat will be playing in China on the Paradorn Super Tour around November 23. If you live in China, you may want to check the schedule for the tour so you can plan to go see Marat play! Any additional information will be posted here, and if anyone has the schedule for China please email me at safinator@hotmail.com! Thanks!

One last thing. After the Super Tour, Marat will go to Monte Carlo to train and prepare for the 2004 season. His first tournament is the Hopman Cup. Stay tuned here for more news and thanks as always to Ruth at theguyfromrussia.com for the breaking news!

Great to see that Marat is really working hard on his "comeback" for 2004. This challengers is good match practise and possibly good for his confidence. GO MARAT ;)
It will be also interesting to see with whom Marat will work in 2004... there are many options, lol.

What do you think, with whom will Marat be in 2004 and do you hope he wont be with Denis anymore?

maratski

I still believe Denis has not gotten a dect chance so I won't mind seeing him again with Marat. When Marat is healthy and there are no good results he can leave.

And he ain't that ugly ;)

Whatever Marat decides, lol.
Just saw some fans who actually want Marat to get rid of Denis badly.
But I agree that Denis still hasn`t had a real chance to prove himself. Anyway Marat also maybe might get back with Amit... well i`m indifferent with this.

He says his life is fine the way it is, but sometimes I get the idea that when he will look back at his career that he would start thinking what if.......

I understand, Ilhame. I worry sometimes too. But like Marat, i'm a fatalist. I just think whatever will happen will happen. I don't mean to sound all religious but i feel Marat is here for a reason and he is in good hands. I think its all going to work out in the end so we should just sit back and enjoy the ride.

I think people critise Marat out of frustration. He is so talented its unreal.. we just want to see him live up to his potential and dominate this sport like we know he can.

maratski
11-07-2003, 09:17 PM
That's true Jessi. Reporters think that by critiscising him he'll work harder to prove them the opposite, but because of his injuries and some foolish decisions he wasn't able to do that

Shadow

so true.
You can see that... when Marat was away most of the year they realise how GOOD he is for the game, and as you can see now nearly everybody is talking about how they miss Marat and want him back doing well.

Your guess is as good as mine. http://www.freegaia.com/smileys/endesaccord/endesaccord14.gif
Maybe Kafelnikov didn't what to play. I wonder if the Privat Bank Cup people knew about this prior to Denis' press conferance yesterday or if that was what the press conference was about.
Whatever, as long as Marat wins, I don't care who he plays with. :p

Shadow

I wished he would also play singles, but unfortunaly he wont.

Cris
11-09-2003, 07:36 PM
That's true. This is Marat. ;)
Hope he plays two or three rounds at least.
Play (and win) some singles matches would be good for his confidence, but as you said, it won't happen.

Jessi
11-09-2003, 07:49 PM
i'm sure it was Kafel who changed his mind and not Marat. Obviously, without a partner Marat would have had to withdraw but since Denis is there with him anyways he stepped in so Marat could still play and also keep the tournament organizers happy.

Ruth
11-09-2003, 08:12 PM
It sounds more like bad english on the privatbankcup website > maybe both Kafel & Marat are playing doubles.... just not together! I thought it was an odd pairing especially when Denis is there and Marat doesn't get along with Kafel particularly well...
Ah well, as long as Marat gets some matches under his belt, I don't care who he partners :D

Ruth

I posted this on my own message board nd I just thought I'd post it here for you guys; see what you think... has the Marat-Denis partnership lost its sparkle for you too?

I know I joke about Marat withdrawing from tournaments as 'the curse of Denis' but I think there may be some truth in this...

Before I start, I'd just like to say, if this injury is genuine, then Marat has my total sympathy. But since this would be like the 5th injury this year, making Marat as unlucky as Goran...I have a slight doubt about this new 'injury'

Like most of you, I've been a Marat fan long enough to remember Marat playing when he could barely stand up straight, playing when he's had flu or food poisoning, playing with all kinds of injuries that he happily dismissed in the post-match press conf - why? Because Marat felt the tennis came first. OK, this attitude has a down side - I believe this is how his wrist injury became so bad (he played when he should have rested) but now Marat seems to have gone to the other extreme, and withdrawing for every little 'injury' (which can't be that bad, because he's usually fine within days).

So what's changed?

I think there are a few possibilities - one is genuine fear of more injury. Maybe every little pain scares him and he thinks it can turn into a huge injury, so he withdraws to protect his body. If so, he needs some medical reassurance and a reality check. Hypochondriacs don't win matches.

Another reason - Marat has no confidence in himself and it's crippling him. Maybe, instead of going on court hoping to win, he has already decided he can't win, so he makes an excuse, to avoid being embarrassed before he even starts the match. This is understandable because he has had some bad losses due to the injury and he didnt win any singles matches during his brief comeback. So, in context of this challenger, maybe he panicked and thought 'I don't want to lose a doubles match at a challenger tournament - that would be the worst loss ever!!' and withdrew to avoid a humiliating defeat - he's trying to protect his mental state. But how can things change if he doesn't even play a match?!?

So where does Denis fit into all this? I think I'm really starting to question his role in Marat's career. Denis has so much to prove to the tennis world and Marat fans alike, and he hasn't had much chance to prove himself this year due to the genuine injuries. But what about the other 'minor' injuries and excuses? Where has Denis been in Marat's decisions to withdraw? Where has Denis been when Marat's been awkward and rude with the media? (see Kremlin Cup et al where he refused to talk) Why is Denis sitting his interviews and press conf. FOR Marat?! When did Marat turn into a diva? Which man is behind this change of attitude - Marat or Denis? I don't know, but Marat needs to take a good hard long look at his public image right now - he looks like a mummy's boy and I'm worried that the tennis world is no longer taking him seriously. We all want to see him back, but we want the OLD Marat with guts and soul, not the guy who makes excuses and fakes injury on court (see Lyon doubles match)

Either Denis is allowing Marat to get away with this Roddick-esque behaviour (too frightened to say anything? Or doesn't care? Or over-protective?) , or Denis hasn't provided enough motivation and encouragement for Marat to get on court and overcome his fear of failure. Maybe Denis is being too critical of Marat (he always said he wasn't 'frightened to tell Marat if he is s***') and this is adding to Marat's lack of confidence. Or maybe Marat likes Denis around because he can have his own way and Denis won't say anything to stop him.

At this point of time, it's looks like Denis has dragged Marat down to his level of playing, instead of improving Marat's amazing game.

I don't know what you guys think about the Marat and Denis partnership but I think I am losing faith in it.....

I think he's taking every injury serious lately. Even a small one. Marat has always said that there's more in life then tennis and this year God listened to him and gave him a life. He enjoyed his life in Moscow very much as far as I can tell from his quotes, but he has also realised that he missed tennis and perhaps loves it more then he thought. He has seen the first time GS champions this season and knows that it should have been him holding all those trophies. He's hungry for succes next year and I believe he wants to be 100% then and therefore decided to skip the doubles match.

This still doesn't answer the question entirely, cause I wonder how he wants to get his confidence back. He can practice as much as he wants and as much as he can handle in the off season, but there's no such thing as match practice. Hopman Cup is already a good start since there's not much pressure and pressure's the last thing he needs right now, but I don't think he'll get far in AO. Maybe that's also not his priority.

I TRULY believe Marat when he says he knows what he's doing and therefore don't comment on Denis. Marat has all the shots and I believe he does listen to Denis, but whether Denis can help him with strategy, etc. which is important too is a mystery to me. I still give him the benefit of the doubt since Marat isn't fully back yet. I believe he also deserves the credit for Marat's good performance in Bercy and the DC final.

Being a Marat fan I've been trough ups and downs, but have never really lost hope and I won't lose it now. I have faith in both of them and IF he's healthy I'm sure these men are going to surprise us :)

Agree with you, Ilhame.
I try to be optimist. I believe Marat will overcome this bad moment and will come back stronger mental and physically. I think Dennis didn't have a chance to show his job. Hope he can do this next year.

Ruth
11-13-2003, 09:12 AM
I agree with everything you said Ilhame, except one -
Denis deserves no credit for Bercy or DC whatsoever - that was all Amit's work. I was there and my friends were there for DC - Denis was just in the background as a 'friend' then. It was Amit who had been coaching and encouraging Marat and he honestly deserves the credit for Marat's performance at both events. :D

maratski
11-13-2003, 03:47 PM
They are good friends and I believe he did help him there, even though Marat was still with Amit. I'm not trying to take any credit away from Amit, but I believe Denis does and has done good things for Marat too.

Ruth

Lets hope we see some Safin magic in China! (if he's still going..)

I think Denis is not good as a "coach". He is Marat`s friend and he should stay like that. But it would be definetly good for Marat, when Denis travel`s with him besides a coach.
Anyway after all Marat has to decide whats good for him and he will realise it.

Shadow
11-15-2003, 06:09 PM
Well i think some Fans should have a lil more faith in the man himself ;) I know its difficult at the moment, but its also a very difficult time for Marat and i think it would help him a lot to know that we BELIEVE in him! And you never know with Marat, he is always good for a surprise :D
