ok this is striclty about SNL, not a thread to start worrying how its gonna affect tennis, and yada yada.

so how do you all think he's gonna do? i say it's gonna be pretty good, for someone of his calibur in acting. he can easily make fun of himself, is pretty sarcastic, and quick with comebacks, sounds like the ideal person for SNL.

do you think they're gonna do a skit making fun of him, i hope they do since he doesnt mind, heck he does it to himself. i really wanna see how he's gonna control his laughing, im sure there will be some instances where he'll just burst out laughing.

so what does everyone else think?

Personally I love it when non-actors host SNL. They are usually much funnier. Last year after the Olympics, Johnny Moesley (sorry if I butchered his name) was HILARIOUS and he and Andy strike me as being pretty similar personality-wise. Sure I'm biased, but I think Andy is really going to kick ass and be hilarious.

Yea I'm SURE they will do something making fun of himself.... not sure what, but I'm SURE they will. Something about him yelling at the umps, or throwing his racket or crying at the USO or something like that, I've no doubt!

Who is the musical guest? Mandy has a new album out...it could be her!

Anyway, SNL rarely depends on the host. If the writers are on, the show will be great and Andy will be carried along with it. Justin Timberlake is no actor, but his show was the funniest I've seen in a long time because the sketches were excellent.

The musical guest is Dave Matthews, just him, not the band. He released a solo album.

I HATE JT, and his was by far the funniest SNL in a while. I agree, it's the writing (love ya Tina Fey!) but I think it's a difference when the host is not an actor. The funniest episodes I remember in the past few years are when the musicians co-hosted (JT, Britney - hate her too, and JLo - don't really love her either), or athletes (Johnny, like I said), and politicians (Al Gore and McCain were both heeeeesterical). Conversely, some of the least funny are when big serious actors come and try to be funny (Halle Berry, etc.).

I don't know why that is though... maybe it's because the non-actors aren't pigeon-holed with acting and they're just there to goof off and be funny and it's funny? I don't know but for me something about the non-actors out of their element makes for the funniest shows that I remember. Andy's gonna kick butt!

J. Corwin
11-03-2003, 05:16 AM
My opinion it's because you're not used to seeing them in acting roles. So just by that virtue it's hilarious to see them in skits, etc. lol.

I agree those are some of the funniest eppys.

I saw Andy's Sabrina Teenage Witch appearance
It was brief but funny, when he dived for
a ball, LMAO! I was thinking, will this guy do
comedy sketches soon?!
I get to see him goof around in comedy shows/charities/world team tennis, win wild matches, & have chats on the net w/fans!
Why not enjoy a great tennis dream while it lasts?

Actually, I just finished reading Tom Shales' "Live from New York," which is an oral history of SNL. It seems that a lot of big actory types bring in their own entourages and writers, and try to have the show tailored to them instead of allowing the SNL writers and cast members to do their jobs and guide them. And when that happens, it often leads to disastrous results because the show has been sidetracked for one person, instead of being allowed to be its own entity.

One of the more recent failures they brought up was the Tom Green show of a couple years ago. Green came in with his show's writers and wanted to have SNL be very out there, like his show. I remember watching that show and thinking it wasn't very SNL-esque, it seemed like a protracted version of his show, and yet trying to exist in the SNL parameters, and it really didn't work at all.

Andy doesn't have writers. They're going to tell him what to do, and if he's smart, he'll listen, won't talk back, won't try to pitch any ideas  and let them mold him.

The hosts that are most adored are the ones who are open to anything -- but anything that the creative people on the show have created for them.

A few beloved celebs by the recent SNL cast and crew are Tom Hanks, John Goodman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Alec Baldwin. And that's why they keep getting invited back, to host and to do guest spots.

J. Corwin
11-03-2003, 08:13 AM
Ah, so that's partially why. It's cuz of the writers and who they are lol.

Really, LOL! Yeah, for a guy who seems like he can be a gigantic ass when things don't go his way (ask some paparazzi or...Kim Basinger), they had nothing but love for him in the book. It's funny because I don't really recall any of his previous hosting appearances, not like I can remember John Goodman's various hilarious spots as Linda Tripp, or Gwyneth's "As the Golden Globe-nominated star of such films as 'Emma' and 'Shakespeare in Love,' there's nothing I like better than hard-core porno."

Hey, Andy will be #1 during SNL! I bet he mentions that in the monologue. :D

Deboogle!.

Yep I read it somewhere, he's hosted SNL more than anyone LOL!! I don't think he's generally that funny on there either, jmo

as for Andy being #1, that's one of the first things I thought of when he got it last week...that'll be great.

I'm really really excited about this now, I wasn't so much until during this past week's show when they said who was hosting next week and the announcer said his name I was like WOW this is a huge deal for Andy and for tennis. I love Andy's self-depracating humor b/c I'm the same way, so I'm expecting a lot of funny skits making fun of himself.

Maybe he'll do something playing on McEnroe or Connors or one of the other older greats who were also explosive on court. The possibilities are just endless!

3 questions concerning SNL:

1) Is it Saturday
2) Is it during the Night?
3) Is it Live?

I want the answer for number 3 ;)

Deboogle!.
11-07-2003, 07:20 PM
I'm still excited to see it, but it was bad. Either someone can act or they can't - you don't need longer than 15 seconds to tell it was weird lol. It's gonna be awesome and funny but he should stick to his day job that's all i'm sayin'

Havok
11-07-2003, 07:33 PM
oh no i know he should stick to his day job;) i know his acting skills aren't the greatest, i saw like the last 30 seconds of his little bit on Sabrina and it was pretty bad, but its weird playing yourself anyways. even if he sucks, which i don't think he will, that is once he gets the butterflies out of his stomach, we will be in for a pleasant surprise. and even if it's a big bomb, i won't mind because at least he had the courage to do it, and he can now say he has hosted SNL. and Andy won't mind about his performance as well, because he's able to make fun of himself, as he did when he said he sucked ass in Sabrina

Hey, they just ran another promo for SNL and this one was different!

This time it was just Andy and the Dave Matthews dude. After Andy introduced himself as the host of SNL, Dave turns to him and dares him, "Hey, I'll bet you can't hit that camera [points to cameraman] with your power serve!" and Andy goes, "I'll bet I can!" and just as he lifts his arm up to serve, we see Dave and the cameramen running like crazy away from him, with the cue cards flying all over the place.

Andy looks around and asks "Hey, where'd everybody go?"

I like this promo better than the other one. His "acting" was actually much better in this new one so maybe you're right about his deliberately acting badly, MisterQ.

from Andy's site (via the NY Post).... I'm dying already!!!!!!!!!!! :haha:

"11/7/2003 -- Saturday Night Live's Fred Armisen found out that sometimes its not good to be the King -- as in tennis great Billie Jean King. Armisen, who has no tennis background, taped a segment with US Open champion Andy Roddick (host of the Nov. 8 episode) at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing on Friday where he plays King and challenges Roddick to Battle of the Sexes II, the follow-up to her classic match against Bobby Riggs thirty years ago. The match was taped in Arthur Ashe Stadium and marked the first time Roddick had been on the court since winning his first major title in September. Armisen surprised the producer by shaving his entire body, including under his arms, to play King, who turns 60 later this month. Armisen's King taunts the 21-year-old world No. 1 men's tennis player into the match and spends most of the time avoiding Roddick's serve, which has been clocked as fast as 149 mph. "It was so fast," said Armisen between takes. "I could hear it whizzing by my head. It's pretty scary." Roddick admits, "I was probably hitting about 110 (mph) at first but threw some around 125 towards the end. He moves fast, which helped." Roddick dominates the match and even plays points reading a magazine and sipping tropical drinks from an old fashion beach lounge chair. Roddick's girlfriend, singer/actress Mandy Moore, was not seen the National Tennis Center, but is expected to be at the NBC Studios on Saturday"

They started bitching that they hate it when people "need help" in the monologue, and I am inclined to agree, but when everyone realized how cute he was, they all settled down :)

Now they understand my slight adoration ;)

It was an okay show...the Time Travelin' Scott Joplin bit of a year ago (with Brittany Murphy as Anna Kournikova) was much funnier than this one, but some good skits were around. I particularly liked the Mary Poppins one, and the last skit :D

Andy did fine...he was much less wooden than McEnroe

The gyno, the BJK battle of the sexes, and the jock talk skits were hilarious. :haha: But my favorite was that Mary Poppins skit (Andy brings out the mother in me. ). His blonde wig was pretty funny to look at but I also loved some of his lines ("I'm going to go buy ecstasy from my uncle's friend" and "I'm not wearing this! [his pj's] I look like a DICK!"). Finally, the governess lady wins him over and he appreciates her taking such loving care of him.

Then we see John McEnroe and the other guy suddenly doing a commentary on the skit ("I've never had sex with Beyonce Knowles either, but I wouln't be choking worse than this kid!") and John doing a really bad Jack Nicholson impersonation.

I'm glad Andy got Johnny Mac to come along for the ride. His "woodeness" is what makes him so funny, IMO. And like Andy, he's a showman who doesn't mind being watched and making a fool of himself. ;)

Oh, the Agassi skit was kinda lame but it was funny to see the "old" Agassi sitting down with the "current" Agassi and I'm sure Andy will be getting an earful from Andre when they see each in Houston! :haha:
