Monday Showdown : Federer vs Haas

Roger Federer is playing some stunning tennis but so is Tommy Haas. The Swiss Genius has dominated Haas for the last 4 years but Haas shocked Federer in Kooyong Exhibition a week ago keeping his undefeated streak in Australia against Federer. Haas fans hope for a Haas hatrick while the Federer Fans hope Fefderer will finally get a win against Haas in under the Australian sun.

Who do you think will win this one?
Will the Swiss genius continue his route to a second AO title?
Will Haas, without the burden of heavy locks, create the bigest upset of this AO 2006?

In H2H Federer leads 4-2 ( Exhibitions don't count)
2006 Doha, Hard, S Federer def Haas 6-3 6-3
2005 Halle, Grass, S Federer def Haas 6-4 7-6
2002 Paris TMS, Carpet, R16 Federer def Haas 6-2 7-6
2002 Australian Open, Hard, R16 Haas def Federer 7-6 4-6 3-6 6-4 8-6
2000 Basel, Carpet, R32 Federer def Haas 6-3 6-3
2000 Sydney Olympics, Hard, Haas def Federer 6-3 6-2

Australia is the only place Haas has given Roger problems otherwise he has never won a set off Roger outside Australia. I am not normally superstitious but who knows

Please tell me this is an inside joke or something, because otherwise I can't believe that a person would seriously make such a remark.

Well folks don't give too much in Tommys victory over Roger in Kooyong. Roger wasn't playing full (as he just said in an interview) and right comming from Doha still suffering a bit of jetlag

Sure Tommy played great but he already lost a set to Luczak and he had to run a lot during that match and already spent quite more time on court than Roger. And Roger really looked better played stunning against Max. So fully focused and concentrated - I pretty sure he will beat Tommy this time Down Under

Haas won just twice. but he won the important ones
so we will see
and Haas has a good run in Australia he reached his only SF of a Slam so far in Australia and he won the silver-medal in Sydney 2000

As for the thread's question,
I have to say Fed in three unless Haas can somehow take a set off.
No doubt that Haas is playing great tennis at the moment,
but so was Agassi last year and look what happened in QF against Federer.

Horatio Caine

Roger will win relatively - I cannot see too much that Haas can do to ultimately hurt him.

I wish Haas (and that would mean an awesome match, as most of the times Fed is defeated or is close to it), but it will be Federer in 3 (luckyly in 4).

Roger in 3 as he won't loose a set in the whole tourney

The other thread is almost as bad as this one, but maybe we can save this yet...

Haas is playing well, and has the confidence of knowing that he has beaten Federer recently. But, from another perspective, he also has the disadvantage of having beaten Federer recently. Roger will be geared up for this one, and given that he's been playing fairly well, I can't see him losing, especially if both continue playing at their current levels. Definitely looking forward to it though; here's hoping it'll be a good one.

Jesus Christ, what kind of nonsense is this? You said it: it's superstitious. The world is logical. Haas beat Federer competitively on two occasions. They both happened to be in Australia. They ALSO both happened to be around FOUR AND SIX YEARS AGO RESPECTIVELY, back when Haas was the world number two and the superior player.

This is 2006. Since back then, Federer has beat world records and has gone on to become perhaps the best player of all time. He exceeds both the talent and the form of Haas BY FAR. That exhibition match meant nothing - it was not an ATP event. Federer destroyed Tommy just the week before at Doha. And on Monday, he will do it again, and you'd better believe it. Three straight sets.

Of course following common sense and logic Roger should take in three sets but in Sport unexpected things are always happening :) Also remember that some players like Safin play their very best tennis in Australia (or indoors for Safin), so i mean that Haas is not going to be a pushover because his best results in slams came from this tourney and something special seems to motivate him in this part of the world.

I think this could be a competitive match with the way Haas is playing, but Federer is playing just as well, so that presents alot of problems for Haas. Again, this could be a competitive match, but I'd be very suprised if Roger loses.

I agree with this in a sense and I think Haas may well play a great match. I will try to explain what I think by using a crazy analogy which will probably confuse anyone who bothers to read it.

Imagine Haas has 10 levels to his game, 1-10, with 10 being the highest.

Imagine Roger has 10 levels to his game as well with the same applying as it did with Haas.

Then also imagine there is a 'general tennis level' which applies to everyone. Imagine this scale goes between 1-20.

The way I see it, Haas' level is at about 15 or 16 on the general tennis level when it is on 10 in Haas' level. However, when Roger is playing at 10 for his level he is playing at 18 or 19 on the general tennis level.

For this reason Fed should pull through this match. I think Fed would have to play poorly, by his own high standards, for Haas to take a set.

if roger serves well...haas can pack his bags.

roger's serve and defense are the difference makers in this match

They were both brilliant in the match with Mirnyi. Federer was hitting more aces and serve winners than Mirnyi.

well i would love to see Haas defeat Roger that would be the match with so much efffect for the rest of the season,
the way I see it its only Haas & NAlbandian who have a chance against Federer, Hewitt now out & Roddick arent real competitors
its definitely the match of the tournament
Federer could win in 3 comfortable sets but Haas has nothing to lose & isnt expected to beat Roger so that can help him relax & enjoy his time

This is a good post Stebs. It's very similar to what Pat MacEnroe often says, that Federer possesses and extra gear that the other players just don't seem to have. Tommy is in for a very tough match. It will probably be one of the best of the entire tournament and I hope that ESPN will show the entire match in the US.

I would seriously curse ESPN if they don't...They rather show any of the women's match that one of the men's. Is just freaking ridiculous I'm getting pished of that coverage of "90+ hours of coverage" they are showing mathces that nobody cares about when good matches are being played. i.e. Hingis DELAYED MATCH instead of Tommy Haas vs. Luczak or Hrbaty's tough 5 setter

Thanks for that, I was searching my memory and I was just too lazy to go to atptennis.com and look it up. :) But, it was kind of before Roger became ROGER! so you're right, we're kind of in a different era right now. It just seems like when someone beats Roger these days he becomes more determined to teach that guy a lesson in the next match.

Haas has no chance against Federer don't be blind. It will come to Nalabandian - Federer in the final with the outcome hard to predict. Personally David should beat Roger and again with David you never know, if he stays on the same level he's right now, Roger has no chance.
