Nathan Healey reminds me of Pat Rafter ...

I have been watching the Nathan Healey v Davydenko match and Nathan is putting up a great show!

What's he ranked I wonder - about 200? Doing a great job by taking a set off the #5 seed and now breaks back for 4-4 in the 4th.

Is he the new Pat Rafter? He has the looks, the athletic bod, the all court game, and he wears his heart on his sleeve.

And what an atmosphere out there on MCA. It's like a soccer match!

Go Nathan!

too bad he has neither the talent nor the tennis skill.

Well excuse me. I was referring to his style of play. Did you watch the match or have you seen him play? I mean to take a set off Davydenko and push him to a few other close sets tonight was no mean feat. Plus he beat world #20 odd Rocchus in 4 the other day.

Of course he will never be a Rafter in talent, but in style he reminds me very much of Pat.

And this performance at the Aussie Open should give him a lot of encouragement. To be honest, based on his 3 matches here I could easily see him in the top 50. Whether he gets the breaks or not is another story. But based on these matches (2 of which I have watched live) he does in fact have a lot of ability. Go Nathan. You have two new fans in me and my flatmate who was also very impressed! :)

Could be. Rafter's success came late in tennis terms, I seem to recall :)

It's lovely to see the crowds behind Healey and Luczak and Stosur today :)

1) no, he is not stylistically similar to rafter. rafter was a pure serve-volleyer; healey is not.
2) no, he did not beat rochus, he beat volandri and delic.
3)

That is not exactly my recollection.

yeah he didn't beat Rochus Luzcak did. Volandri retired against him (2 sets down mind you) and he beat someone i'd never seen before this tournament - similar to him actually.

I don't think he really has Pat's skills and to be honest he actually reminds me of male Nicole Pratt  looks better i guess though

That is harsh. :speakles:

 that wasn't meant to be an insult though - he actually hits his backhand in a very similar way, he scraps about using a slice forehand to stay in many points, and he's coming into a decent singles career later in a tennis life.

i know it sounds it but Pratt achieved a lot really for someone with limited ability. she was top 30 for a little while. Nathan will do well to achieve that.

Sorry, yes it was Volandri. Not a bad scalp though. A seed.

And he is certainly more Rafter like than almost every other player on the tour today (except Henman). Rafter often stayed back and rallied on the hardcourts - he didn't come in on every point, except maybe on grass.

He has a similar athletic build to Rafter, he does serve and volley sometimes, and he also slices his backhand at times and comes in during a rally. So there are similarities whether you care to admit it or not.

Anyway, who cares what you think. You just wanted to get on here and run Nathan's game down, and run me down with your superiority complex.

he is not more like rafter than almost every other player on the tour. guys like myrini and dent have more similarities to rafter, because they are pure serve-volleyers. if you were going to compare rafter to an australian, you would be better off choosing paul baccanello, not healey.

as for your points of comparison, you're clutching at straws.

rafter is taller than healey and almost every player on tour has an 'athletic build' (what kind of vague phrase is that anyway?).

he serves and volleys SOMETIMES - maybe in one point a game - whilst rafter would serve and volley on every first serve.

he slices his backhand and comes in during a rally? lol. this is a point of comparison? almost every other player does that. may as well compare rafter to hewitt and federer.

and no, i'm not trying to 'run you down' with a superiority complex, i'm merely pointing out that the arguments which you are raising are of little substance.

Dent does not remind me of Rafter. Mirny does not remind me of Rafter. Baccanello does not remind of of Rafter. In fact Henman doesn't remind me of Rafter either. HOWEVER, Healey reminds me of Rafter. And I am not justifying this with technical aspects - just the way he moves about the court, his volleys, his looks (except he is blond), his athleticism including dives etc. He is not that dissimilar to Pat IMO and his shots also have a little artistry about them, which remind me of Pat's shotmaking. Let me reiterate that for you - they REMIND ME of Pat.

I am not saying that others have to think this, I am merely saying that he reminds ME of Rafter. Is that OK with you? Use all the technical explanations that you want, I still have my opinion and we shall just have to disagree.

yeah buddy, and nikolay davydenko reminds me of andy roddick. of course, i can't coherently justify this with anything approaching logic, it's just my opinion. have a nice night :)

10/10 for your sarcastic and condescending manner.

Anyway, Nathan Healey is being shown on Channel 7 now for any viewers who may wish to take a look and let me know if you can see anything in his game, style, athleticism, diving volleys, looks etc that may remind you of Pat. He is certainly not your standard baseline bashing machine that most of the tour has churned out in recent years. And that is why I like him, he has a refreshing style and attitude.

Funny, I just saw this in an article on Fox Sports about Nathan Healey and his match with Davydenko:

"But cheered on by the boisterous crowd he gradually regrouped and was soon breaking even with his prudent use of his serve-volley game and a booming first serve.

The Sunday Telegraph"

If I recall, Pat Rafter used to play a serve volley type of game.
