I've noticed that over the years ESPN really loves to show Mauresmo's matches. She and Sharapova both get as much coverage as an American.

This afternoon they showed Serena's loss. Tonight they are supposed to show the tape of Hingis 3rd round .

Will they ever show Federer? Maybe not unless he gets to the final.

their schedule says they're showing fed vs. max tomorrow afternoon:shrug: so far they haven't shown a match of his when they said they would, and certainly nothing close to a complete match like they have for most of the other top men and women. their coverage has been awful and totally unbalanced between men and women. i guess it can only go up from here:unsure:

they'll show Roger tomorrow, who else would they show? With both Williamses out and only one US Man left, they'll be showing other people, obviously. It'll be interesting to see what they show tonight b/c not all that much is going on that they'd typically cover.

Right now ESPN is saying that matches are halted due to the heat and that therefore they are showing Hingis' taped match. That's not true. Haas is playing live right now!

If they show Roger's match it will be on tape tomorrow. However, knowing ESPN they might likely show a tape of the Mauresmo match instead.

They should be showing a little bit of eveyrone. There is no need to show only entire matches. Besides several ATP matches were over very quick if that's the issue.

Don't complain. They showed a tape of Federer in a boring, lopsided match the other night as live tennis was going on - the first set of the Pierce upset and the great Ferrero/Tipsarevic match. It was ridiculous, similar to them playing a tape of Hingis now while live tennis is going on.

ESPN clearly doesn't care about tennis. They just care about the big names. There's a ton on the women's side this week, not many on the men's.

Let's cite all the evidence: Abundance of commercial breaks, often going over into the games so that the viewer misses 1 or several points. Showing taped matches while live tennis is happening. Preferring to feature constant "analysis"/rambling from the commentators at the desk rather than actual matches (there's more talk than tennis). Lack of balance between men's and women's tennis this week.

And the list goes on.

Conclusion? ESPN blows.

Have they aired any of Federer's matches in entirity so far? I didn't think they did. The did air all of Mauresmo's first round. It seems like they have shown at least some of every round she's in.

Federer is a big name in tennis......so if that's what they go by then why wouldn't they show all of his matches? I'd be happy if they'd even just show some highlights of each of his rounds.

They have shown Hewitt and Mauresmo more than Federer and Federer is a bigger name than they are in the US with tennis fans.

I'm interested to see what ESPN plays after Hingis is done! My original thought was that they'd stay on to show all of Clijsters live, and if they do they have to fill time in between so it'd be awesome if we got some Haas or Hrbaty/Andreev (hopefully it will go to a 5th!) or Ferrero/Kiefer. Yes, both Venus and Serena are not as committed as they could be; but Venus is nooooooowhere near fat. She looked soooo great in that yellow dress in the Tofurkey or whatever match.

ps. I think in a few years broadcasting will be so cheap that espn will have a (digital) channel for each sport. I wonder if they will swallow the tennis channel or compete with it when that happens?Maybe, maybe not. It's hard to tell because the technology is changing so fast. Latest word from the FCC is that by 2009 we will have to have new TVs or digital converters b/c there will be no more normal broadcasting as we know it (and by broadcasting I mean the legally-defined connotation of UHF/VHF stations that you can pick up just by plugging in a tv with an antenna)...if this happens as currently planned, there's no way to know. ESPN, being owned by Disney, has huge clout over cable carriers, but they'd still have to negotiate carriage with all the MSOs (Cable companies) for any new stations. ESPN classic, for example, still isn't carried in a ton of markets because each deal is negotiated separately. Bottom line is if the FCC forces all these networks to keep up with the technology, it'll actually get more expensive, not less.

The interesting thing would be channel-splitting. With Digital, one channel can broadcast several different channels from one channel, so you'd have like ESPN-1, ESPN-2, ESPN-3, etc, but they'd all be the same channel, so to speak. It's possible with digital and not broadcasting b/c the quality would still be pretty good (undetectable differences to the naked eye, essentially).

I wouldn't be surprised if someone were to buy TTC but I doubt it'd be ESPN. If they were that interested in tennis, they'd show more of it now. Them dropping DC this year is a pretty significant sign that their interest in tennis is not where any of us would like it to be. Hopefully TTC can last long enough to get into enough markets and get the subscribers and advertisers that they need to be able to make it:)

Something I think would be nice would be for the slams to have a paid TV service. For a fee or something you get live transmissions and can choose matches from any tv court or something like that. I'd pay like $20 or something for that kind of option :D

Well they don't complain about Agassi's shorts, so I don't understand that one.

Can I vent here about Clijsters? The way she has been talking, they were making her coffin...

and still she goes out and plays?

Typical Kim. Remember the crutches a couple years ago? Then she makes the finals? Nice.

Mind you, last time I snarked on a Kim injury she was out for a year, so yeah ;)

everyone complains, but i thought they did a good job staying on the line for jcf/kiefer.

not showing haas vs luczak is miniscule compared to the crap they have done over the years. I say bravo espn. they are indeed improving.

besides the haas luczak match wasnt exactly a classic, was it? I can tell you i preferred watching hingis play her opponent. normally i prefer live tennis, but haas-luczak, cmon mate!

Every night, THEY HAVE GONE over their indicated coverage to stay on the line to finish matches.

i am a federer fan, but i didnt want to see rog slice up his first two opponents. very boring and rog was cruising, nothing spectacular. i would rather watch something else. ESPN showed good tennis today.

last year they didnt show federer-safin live. that was a bad bad mistake. they are learning though.
