Cynthia Lum's snap-happy tennis life

January 21, 2006

Cynthia Lum mingles with the world's top male tennis stars - and it's all just part of the job, writes Chris Johnston.

Photographer Cynthia Lum is the eyes of men's tennis. And those eyes have seen a lot.

Lum, from Los Angeles, has been on the circuit for 12 years. She's such a fixture - the US, French, and Australian opens, all the big ones - that she is on first-name terms with many top players. She often stays in the same hotels and goes to the same restaurants, bars, clubs and functions. She's the kind of person who will give a disc of pictures to a player after they have had a good win.

"My attitude is 'we're all in this together'," Lum says. "The guy picking up the towels in the locker room is as important as Lleyton Hewitt. I treat the players like normal human beings and they respect that, they like it.

"We're all pretty friendly. Have dinner, have drinks, have a party, you know?"

Given the clamour surrounding top male players at the Australian Open this week - "where did he eat?", "where did he drink", "is he really going out with her", "did you see him with his shirt off?" - Lum's access would be the envy of many. She is quick to stress that she is a sports photographer, but she is also a woman who likes men.

"Frankly, my mother didn't raise stupid children. Why would I want to be on the women's tour? The men are a lot more profitable, the guys are more interesting, the tennis is better, it's more fun. And they're guys. What's wrong with hanging out with cute young guys? They're amazing."

Lum loves tennis. She loves photographing it. It's a subtle sport; it's all about the tiny nuances. Grand gestures and the spectacular are hard to find. She likes this about it. But she also likes the backdrop to an event like the Australian Open.

"Tennis is the only sport where there's one or two-week events," Lum says. "You get to know people, you make friends. There's a dinner this night and a party that night; people meet new people, there's new romances and broken romances. It's all going on behind the tennis. It builds and builds and then, bang!, it's over, and they're taking the site down while you're shooting the last pictures.

"It has a drama all of it's own. It's like a mini-series, a soap opera."

The big gossip this year is that men's No. 2 Andy Roddick is on with Russian Maria Sharapova, women's No.4 seed. "That would surprise me," Lum says. "He likes starlet-type girls, but he wouldn't like a girl that overshadows him."

She met Roddick when he was 19. "I thought to myself, 'this kid has great potential as a player and also as a brat'. He was supposed to be the next Pete Sampras, he's had a lot of pressure put on him, and kids like that have brat potential. He has a temper, but he's a good kid. He's a funny kid. He does funny things. Once he had his people buy him a bed from the W Hotel in Los Angeles for his house in Florida, just because he liked the bed."

No. 1 seed Roger Federer is the polar opposite, she says. He is quiet and does not party. He is under his girlfriend's thumb. He never goes out at night. "Although once I did see him at the Xiang Yang market in Shanghai where they sell only fakes - fake Rolex watches, fake Chanel sunglasses."

Hewitt? Well, she likes his eyes. "They're huge," she says, "and blue, and they pop out when he's running for a shot." Off court, though, "you won't see him, he never goes out. He was always a pain in the neck, but he's mellowed. He's not nasty, just a pain."

The Latin guys, though, the Spanish and South Americans . . . "oh my God, they are so much fun".

"Go to a tournament in Argentina or Brazil and everyone's out every night dancing and partying," Lum says. "Gaston Gaudio, I like him, he likes to party, believe me. In Shanghai once, at this big nightclub, all these Chinese girls were hitting on him. But he's like 'oh, they're not really my type'. He likes the tall blondes. He's a real good dancer, Gaston."

But Argentinian David Nalbandian, who is not a favourite of Australian crowds, has won a prize for being "unco-operative and sour".

"I've never had a problem with him personally, but in Paris the press have the annual Lemon Award for the French Open's annual pain in the neck. He won it last year."

As someone who deals in the detail of the sport, Lum notices things others do not. Guillermo Coria, for example, does amazing tricks with his racquet. "He flips it and bounces the ball on the edge of it between sets or when he's changing ends. He's very dexterous; he's like a juggler, a magician."

His wife, Lum says, who is "stunning", has the "teensiest, tiniest little outfits. He looks like a little kid next to her."

Roddick is on edge, "like a racehorse". He constantly fidgets with his hat and jiggles a blue rubber bracelet on his right wrist.

And Federer is difficult to photograph in Australia because he has very dark eyes and the angle of the sun here often makes it look like like he has no eyes at all. Which is not what a tennis photographer wants from the best tennis player in the world. Plus, she says, his play is so smooth, so polished. There's no rough edges to it. There is nothing that happens out of the blue.

Unfortunately for Lum, like eyes, those are the things that make good pictures.

"But he'll probably win,"she says.

WHAT THE STARS GET UP TO

ROGER FEDERER
"He’s got his girlfriend and he’s under her thumb. She controls him."

ANDY RODDICK
"I shouldn’t say this but he’s a party boy. He’ll be at the casino playing craps and roulette. He’ll be hanging out in clubs — he went to a party at The Loft this week.’’

LLEYTON HEWITT
"He was always a pain in the neck, but he’s mellowed.’’

DAVID NALBANDIAN
"Unco-operative and sour."

NIKOLAY DAVIDENKO
"He always looks like his mum just scrubbed him down."

THOMAS JOHANSSON
"He’s very good looking, and interesting, because he’s an emotional Swede."

FERNANDO GONZALEZ
"Oh my God, I love Fernando. He’s a real nice guy, a good guy.’ His coach is very cool too.’’

GASTON GAUDIO
"He likes to party, believe me. He’s a real good dancer, Gaston."

IVAN LJUBICIC
"Always obliging but also kind of ... unexpressive"

GUILERMO CORIA
"He has this stunning wife. He comes down for breakfast with his family and the wife, and her make-up arrives 15 minutes before her."

But Argentinian David Nalbandian, who is not a favourite of Australian crowds

He's one of my favourites :D

That's an interesting read. Nalbandian strikes me as a friendly person, but I agree with Roger being under Mirka's control. I think it's because she's always with him, and he's come to depend on her, emotionally more so than anything else. I want to see Gaston dance now.

Well, in French Canada, they think differently of him. During the 2005 Montreal tournament the staff voted him "most charming."

That's one reson why I love watching Guillermo play. He is always busy between points.

why is that a woman can't be critical of a man without being bitter? and who cares if she's good looking or not, attractive people are no more entitled to judge others than the less attractive people in this world. it's a harmless little article, unless she's being outright nasty or damning people to hell for no good reason, it doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

I don't know why some of you are having a go at her  She hasn't said anything bad as far as I can see. She says she never had a problem with Nalbandian herself, and passed on another view. Anyway, some interviews I've read of Nalbandian from a year ago did come across as un-cooperative. But they've been much better lately, I think his English has improved...

What's wrong with her looks? Post your photos...

As it happens, she's a great photographer for wireimage. I found it amusing about Roger. It's not an insult to say he doesn't go out much. I doubt he does.

And I've read similar stories to the the one she tells about Gaston

Well all I can say is that Cynthia and I obviously have very different ideas about make up  Carla Coria is is one of the most naturally beautiful young women I have even seen at close quarters - and one of the things I find most attractive about her is how natural she is, and the total lack of make-up etc. Yes of course she wears make-up in the evening or at a party, but for breakfast (and yes I have seen her at breakast in many Players' Hotels over the years), she normally just wears jeans and a T-shirt and no make-up whatsoever. She is so young and pretty she doesn't need it. Ah well - one of us obviously needs our eyes tested!

Responding to the title comment: Sure, for me it was also quite clearly visable that Federer has not much to say under Mirka. She pretty much controls his tennis life and manages him, decides who is getting an appointment with him, a shooting, an interiview - whatever. And if this is being done by your partner/girl-friend, it's hard to separate business and private life.

thanks for posting the article. i had met cynthia lum before, she's my idol :worship: i want her life ;)

she isn't ugly just a lot older than those young tennis players. isn't it a great life to travel around the world, earning a living doing what you like, having a lot of fun after work, but without the pressure of being a tennis player? not saying that there aren't demands in her work... not to mention all that energy needed for that sort of lifestyle...

i forgot to mention this too... that very few females have made it to her level (full time sports photographer) most are males. as you can see around the courts. and unashamedly admits that she prefers the men's tour too. how cool is that.

Actually she's pretty well known amongst the photogs as a little bit of a biatch. By the way she's 64 years old and not the friendly grandma type. And she dresses like she's 18! Iv'e seen her around....i would say she's notorious, but she'd take that as a compliment.

In a nutshell she's just another groupie hag who uses photography as her aliby. It's quite pathetic actually. The players talk to her cuz you know, they don't want to be rude or they don't care... anybody can abuse credentials.

There's a lot of strange people in the tennis media (chuckles) world. They somehow think by being around the players and talking to them that somehow that makes them famous too.

That was a funny article. She soooo badly want's the players to think she's THE mens tennis photographer.

I like santino's aesthetic best when he's not having hot flashes; nick's personality best, and daniel v. because he's hot (though his laid back attitude makes him a close second for personality).

Much like my tennis player preferences...

It realy IS funny to see Mirka, who is so fat, with Roger, who is not fat and who is no. 1 tennis star :o. It realy makes you wonder: what's wrong with Roger?
So I back you up with this Mirka thing - although it is none of my bussines... But that relationship realy does not look very healthy from outside.

Players need someone they trust to run interference for them. Mirka plays that role for Rogelio. If he didn't want her there, if he wanted to party hearty and run the streets he wouldn't be the player he is. I like the fact that he's not in the casino's or clubs during a tournament. It's probably why he's on top.

I think Cynthia looks good for a 64 year old woman, but she does talk like she`s a groupie. If a 64 year old man would say he takes WTA pics because he likes cute young girls I think he would be called a pervert
About the David thing, she said she doesn`t have a problem with him but other members of the press do(which might be true if he did get the Lemon Award) so it`s not a personal attack it`s just an observation.
I think the whole Roger/Mirka debate is pointless the fact that Fed doesn`t like to party doesn`t mean Mirka`s had him loked up in a room and he`s crying his little heart out.Roger is a grown up and a rather intelligent man, I think he`s capable of making decisions and I`m sure his gf has an influence on him but that doesn`t make him brain dead.

Hardly. Roger is the one who put Mirka in charge of arranging his affairs and he did so for a reason - she is great at it and he trusts her and she's probably a most excellent travelling companion as well. I'd wager that Roger is as meticulous in his business and life affairs as he is in his with his game. It's all important to him right down to his Prada underwear.

After he won his first USO title in 2004, American Vogue ran a spread on him. The article included an interview with both Roger and Mirka where the reporter was asking Mirka questions about her helping Roger with his fashion style. Roger was correcting and adding to every comment she made, guiding her along to the right statement.

This man is in charge of all things Roger Federer.

did she or the author at any time claim that it was real news? unless they did, i don't see the harm. i wouldn't take everything she says as absolute truth, but i wouldn't discount that there may be some truth to some of it, just because it's not necessarily favorable about my fave. even if she's spent only 10 minutes with a player, that's more time than i have so i can say she's in more of a position to judge than i am, and should feel free to do so. i don't get why people are so offended by her comments, nothing she or a lot of other people say about a player i like will change my thoughts about them. :)

She's 64?! Honestly, reading that was like reading some Valley Girl teenager's diary, talking about all the hot boys at school.

People defending Roger keep acting like he is this all-amazing, sensitive, understanding man to date a girl who doesn't look like a top actress and have a body of a supermodel. I don't think he needs to be praised for dating Mirka. Why should you be praised for simply being in love with someone and not falling out of love with them. B/c that's all it is. Nothing extraordinary.

But people have to remember, when they started dating, Mirka was probably up there as one of the hottest girls on the tour. Well, when Mirka was a player, I thought she was really really hot. Hotter than Barbara Schett for sure who everyone seems to think is so hot even though she could get some teeth work done. Anyway, yeah, Mirka has let herself go some. Now that she is not playing tennis, I am sure she doesnt have a strict gym regimen for herself, but to me, she will always be that hot tennis player girl, and that's why I refuse to think she is "fat" or "ugly." I mean, I can't believe people think she is ugly! Chubby, a little, but ugly! Clearly, some people have only been watching tennis for a year. If Mirka got back to the way she used to be, a lot of people would feel stupid

Martina, go, go, go!! Federer won't pop - he will just become even more interesting.

:worship: Great post :worship: Seems some of the more stupid, immature little boys here cannot accept a man who is mature and secure enough to love a woman for herself - not just because he feels the need to impress his mates with some anorexic, plastic bimbo on his arm  Guess they hate Mirka because she has a good brain, and they're scared of strong, intelligent women who will make them feel more stupid than they already are  Good for Roger and Mirka - they have been together a long time and they are happy and love each other - that is all that matters :)

I couldn't agree more...people can be so shallow. Either Fed can have Mirka or a Posh spice wannabe who looks like she hasn't seen food in years, wears an orange tan and has plastic surgery every two months.

Sorry, but Mirka wins by a landslide.

Hey, alcohol is not that bad from time to time, even Jessus Christ drank wine
:D

And for Roger/Mirka, I sad and I say again: Mirka does not look like a girl to be with someone like Federer, who is a celebrity and should be able to choose more freely. Even my father, who is not very into tennis and usually does not comment on women from TV, remarked the same when he saw Mirka!
But it's Roger's bussiness, so he should sort it out. If I were at his place, I would at least ask Mirka not to attend all of his matches!

just dumb as dirt. I hope you are in your teens; no adult should be so stupid.

If Mirka got back to the way she used to be, a lot of people would feel stupid

alot of Word here. I don't understand the mirka-is-ugly comments either. she's got luminous skin anda very conventionally pretty caucasian face.

The only think that I might consider weird if I cared is that he is uberfit and she is not. But whatever, there's no law that says couples need to share the same Body Mass Index.

That's an interesting read. Nalbandian strikes me as a friendly person, but I agree with Roger being under Mirka's control. I think it's because she's always with him, and he's come to depend on her, emotionally more so than anything else. I want to see Gaston dance now.
Just saw this thread, sorry.

Was with Cynthia Lum all through Shanghai Masters Cup. And partied with her, too. It was at Club Rouge that we got to mingle a while with Gaston and his friends. He is a GREAT dancer. And it was good to see him laugh after his double-bagel against Fed (yes, it was THAT kind of a night).

Exactly my thoughts. There's something very unprofessional with this article. Makes her sounds like she hangs out with the players all the time  and she sounds like a gossip columnist (or worse, a 64 year old groupie).

:o

Sorry this is late comment, but I just had to say: Mirka gets my vote.

From her photos when she was a player, I see part of the reason Roger fell in love with her. Another is she doesn't seem to be overbearing, and deosn't mind if Roger gets the spotlight. She just patiently waits and supports him. I dare say the reason Roger signed with an agency of late is because Mirka has more pressure than she can handle right now (handling Roger's career, sidelining her own goals in favor of his, etc.) She looks so exhausted sometimes.

And please please don't ever put Bec Cartwright on the same level as Mirka. I don't think it's fair.

What did Bec ever do that's comparable to what Mirka did for Roger? She's just a pretty face and body that got lucky in bagging a tennis superstar. And judging from her "articles" (and wedding poem), Bec doesn't seem like a very bright person. I have trouble respecting people who have the means to better their minds, but don't because they would rather cruise by using their beauty.

Looks aren't everything, in spite of what many people think. For one thing, Mirka is NOT ugly. Second, if I were a top tennis player like Roger, sure, I'd probably sleep around with models and actresses, but then I'd obviously go for a wise, supportive chick I'm compatible with, who inspires me and helps keep my career on track. Arm candy like Bec only has shelf life of a few years. Then what do you do with her?

Before one of his later AO matches he came on a pre-gameplay show with Bruce McAvaney (sp?) and John "I'm not biased" Alexander, and he was funny, charming and very friendly. You lot are extremely judgemental about players partners without any real idea what constitutes a relationship. Mirka and Bec obviously fulfil the needs of Roger and Lleyton on many levels and it is not up to anyone else to offer up opinions unless they know the parties involved personally.
Get real you lot.
This thread was started because of a photographer's lust for young fit men. Nothing more. Lum doesn't seem to like anyone who prefers a quite life, just the party boys.
And to rate anyone else's partner on looks is very childish. It is blatantly obvious that a lot of the posters here seem to believe every bit of 'gossip' going around, and are extremely young and inexperienced.
Of course Lum doesn't like to mix it with the WTA players - the boys are far more interesting she says. I guess she must have a very sad personal life.

Well, in French Canada, they think differently of him. During the 2005 Montreal tournament the staff voted him "most charming."

That's one reson why I love watching Guillermo play. He is always busy between points.

But isn't it possible to be nice to someone else but still be a jerk? For example, this girl in high school was mean to the unpopular people but nice to her group of friends. Does that mean she's not a b*tch? I'm not saying Nalbandian is a jerk (I like him) but just because he's nice to one country's press and mean to the other doesn't mean he isn't a jerk.

That is the point that I was trying to make. ;) I think that David is probably grumpy more than most, but I also think that he can have his good moments at other times. I think we tend to paint tennis players in one color, someone is a saint, someone is a brat, someone is a sweetheart, someone is an a-hole, someone is a clown- when I think, like all folks- they likely have different aspects to their individual personalities.

It takes a special kind of woman/girl to give up her own aspirations to be with and support a professional tennis player. There are a lot of them, and I think they are just great, no matter what they look like etc. I doubt if a glamorous model/actress who wants to further her career would find the tennis circuit full of opportunities.
The players that are in committed relationships are the ones who prefer the quiet life off the court - the others are the fun boys. No problems for me either way.

You don't hear this "under the thumb" nonsense if a woman gives the impression that she defers to the man in the relationship, but when a man defers to the woman, he's under the thumb. A bit sexist, no?

It sounds to me like they've found the arrangements that work exceptionally well for them - she organises him on a day to day basis while his career continues, then when that's over they'll have time to pursue things she wants to do and lead a more settled life.

I think Roger is gorgeous and I don't think I'm alone in this - he's not a classic himbo but he has a smouldering intensity and a well-dressed grown-up hotness that I really go for.

so who is the classic himbo?? I'm curious to know... :p

Yet another reason that Roger is no comparison to Tiger Woods. Roger's woman is a beast who many would be ashamed to wake up with after a night of hard drinking, while Tiger has a ridiculously hot wife deserving of a world champion. Get rid of that cow Roger. Or if you're really just too stupid to handle your own affairs, keep her sheltered from the rest of the world so that she can't scar any more children's lives with her hideous giant ass. Imagine how those poor seats at all the tennis tourneys must feel after being sat on by that sasquatch-esque Mirka for hours at a time.

I don't particularly think Federer is some super hunk or anything like that, but I was shocked at how unattractive his girlfriend was when I saw her. I definitely saw him with some gorgeous model or something.

...

Maybe Federer doesn't go out at night so he has a better chance of winning matches in the day???? Seems like common sense. I think Federer's dark sultry eyes look very sexy.....much better than someone with popping blue eyes.

this takes female objectifying to a whole new level.

As a teenage girl, I'm really hurt when I'm told that it's my brain and talents that are important, but the messages I get from most guys (typical of your brainpower) inform me that the only useful thing about me is my body. If I'm not in a bikini or a short skirt, my intellect and intelligence doesn't matter. I could either show up in pounds of makeup or I could manage the number one player in the world and keep him well rested and driven. But obviously, number two doesn't matter if number one isn't present.

I'm sick of the sexualization of women. Obviously, Mirka's six years of devotion, beautiful face and dedication to Roger and his career doesn't matter, because she is not a bikini-clad and anorexic doll.

Why do guys like you look at a woman like a piece of poultry for consumption? Obviously, your penis thinks more clearly than your brain, and you're clearly happy with that, which I personally wouldn't be proud of. And when, one in four women is sexually harassed in America, men that think like you are also at fault. It's not about men like Roger, who I respect more because he ISN'T with some model of the week and chooses to stick with his girlfriend of several years. Your objectivication of women is linked to gruesome violence and gross stereotypes, because your attitude tells women like Mirka (beautiful, strong, dedicated and loyal) to be submissive and be treated like a purely sexual being.

And that sickens me.

Even though what you said is typical of something an ugly girl would say, you seem like a nice girl so i'll respond nicely.

As a teenage girl, I'm really hurt when I'm told that it's my brain and talents that are important, but the messages I get from most guys (typical of your brainpowe) inform me that the only useful thing about me my body.

Welcome to the real world. You shouldn't bother to be "really hurt" by the idiotic behavior of most guys, it isn't worth expending any emotion on. Then again, don't most girls want to just fall in love with a rich guy and live happily ever after? Is going for money any better than going for looks?(Note I said MOST girls, much like MOST guys are going for mainly looks)

Obviously, Mirka's six years of devotion, beautiful face and dedicated to Roger and his career doesn't matter, because she is not a bikini-clad and anorexic doll.

It's not so much that, as it is me poking fun at Roger for losing his balls and letting a woman dictate what he does. Guys bust each others' chops all the time for this sort of thing. Her being the relative shape of a hippo only compounds the fun.

Why do guys like you look at a woman like a piece of poultry for consumption?

Because that is our natural inclination, to some extent. If you have a great personality and aren't boring, then you're going to find guys and be able to keep them unless you're just really a dog. If you're hot with no personality, then often a guy will get tired of you.

And when, one in four women is sexually harassed in America, men that think like you are also at fault.

Don't come at me with that. Woman dress provocatively and expect for guys not to look or comment on it? Ridiculous. Most of the time it's just compliments being taken the wrong way. Now obviously there are guys who get out of hand with it and are totally inappropriate, and these idiots should be dealt with accordingly.

It's not about men like Roger, who I respect more because he ISN'T with some model of the week and chooses to stick with his girlfriend of several years. Your objectivication of women is linked to violence and gross stereotypes, because your attitude tells women like Mirka (beautiful, strong, dedicated and loyal) to be submissive and be treated like a purely sexual being.

Well that's great that you appreciate what you think you know about Roger. For all we know Roger could be force-feeding Mirka hot dogs and hamburgers, with several mistresses on the side(undoubtedly fatties too, as Roger seems to be into that). I agree with you on this though......I hope, for his sake, that Roger will never "treat Mirka like a purely sexual being", as that thought sickens ME more than any of my first post sickened you, trust me. Obviously Roger is in love with her, and that is what really matters. That's why they're still together even though she's turned into the equivalent of a depressed walrus. There isn't anything about "my thinking" that is causing violence, as I would never flog a woman for being fat. But you can overdramatize anything you want, you ladies are good at that(another true stereotype, awesome).

As a straight teenage boy, I totally see where you are coming from. Ive seen guys treat these girls horribly. Saying things like "O, she got some fat lips, she sucks a good dick" etc. I wonder how it must feel being on the other side of the spectrum in a girl's shoes hearing things like that and feeling objectified. Of course, there are the girls that soak up the culture and stereotype and dress provocatively and do those things and dont think 2wice about it, as they think its the norm.

I must confess that I didn't have the time to read the previous posts in this thread so I don't know if this was already discusses but the part about Federer being controled by his wife is true and my question is: How would his game be affected by a break in their relationship? Would he be a new Agassi and fall down the rankings because he lost his main support? I guess that would be an interesting phenomenon to observe, specially for his competition.
But I really hope that if he has to break with her, only after winning 15 slams!

In all seriousness, no-one male or female should let the arseclownery of this Albino Donky (I suspect a different pack animal would describe him more appropriately) get to them. It's nothing but insipid and deeply unoriginal trolling. Nobody with any sense believes that The Mirk is hideous, or ever has been. Indeed, those of us who remember The Mirk from her brunette days in 2003 recall she was quite the looker, with a marked resemblance to the actress Catherine Keener. Sadly that likeness has receded somewhat with the onset of a blonde hairdo and a few more pounds, but she's hardly unattractive. I gather she once dissuaded Federer from dying his hair red... if she is running the show, that can hardly be a bad thing.

Nah, the first meeting between them was a clean thrashing in Miami 2004 in the ponytail era. Fortunately Federer managed to avoid the Samson effect with regard to his overall dominance of the game, but still... Agassi wouldn't have had anything to poke fun at in that IW tsunami exhibition last year if the pony were still in place.

Yet another reason to cannonize Agassi he was actually man enough to marry a peer rather than some eye candy to try to prove to other boys that he's a big man. Here's a tip if you pick your partner the same way you pick your car: to try (stress try) to make youreself look good to other people your an epic loser.

Anyone who thinks their house, car or partner's looks will make up for their woeful indaquecies (physical and otherwise) is only fooling themselves. Despite the scrutiny it would seem Roger Federer is secure enough to be more worried about his own happiness than the slack jawed judgements of arm chair sports fans whose achievments and maturity he overshadowed before he left the Junior ranks.
