Fabulous Friday indeed...

Recap on yesterday, easy hit on horna but got letodwn by the hometown boy. Watching hewitt's match was a good in that along with Henman he will be a good fade early on in the season until he sorts himself out.

On to today, taking a couple of dogs based on their resepctive opponents lack of temprament...

Ferrer to beat Ancic - $2.75

Spaniard is in the top 5 returners in the game, and i see this is a nice little matchup between a player who will retrieve everything back hence force Ancic to play the extra shot which is not something Ancic will enjoy and his weak mind will be severely tested IMO. Wrong player favourite and given it is such a lopsided one at that, odds are too good to be true.

Santoro to beat Gaudio - $2.35

See above, the magician's dinky shots will frustrate the argentine who consistently shows that if things don't go his way, he will give up. Again was expecting something closer to evens in the odds stake. They both played in the paris masters last year, a match i was able to watch but it was clear the magician was physically spent after battling out a taxing match the round before against Nieminen.

Lopez to beat Ljubicic - $3.70 (small stakes)

I have to roll with the second best lefty on tour surely? :S It is about this time where ivan suffers his GS syndrome, although he comes into this one with better form and confidence lopez is playing well enough to trouble the croat. His serve was on against Muller, going to be paramount he replicates that in this match. Smaller stakes though.

Baghdatis struggled a lot against Sexy Step. On the other hand, I was positively surprised with Gremelmayr's play after watching him for the 1st time against Robby G. It's true that RG killed himself with eeeeeeeeeeeasy errors on crucial balls, but Gramelmayr was hitting everything back in last 3 sets and didn't look tired at all

A few of the dogs look good to me - especially Nieminen. The Fin has been on fire recently and Nalb doesnt look to be firing on all cylinders. At 2.75 looks like a tasty bet - anyone agree?

Blake @ 1.36 looks like its nailed on as does Tojo @ 1.25. Maybe a parlay of them two @ 1.7

Feli odds look great, everyone knows that Ljubo is a choker! As is Gaudio so the odds on the magician look great.

Hmm... I'm thinking of Ferrer over Ancic @2.75
or Ferrer 3 sets to 2...
I'm still not 100% sure yet since Ferrer has failed to convince me so far.
I also have the impression the match depends more on mario's performance. If he plays well, I fear that Ferrer will not be capable of raising his level.
Last match between the 2 puts me slightly off the spaniard: although it was just a challenger, so I suspect Ferrer might not have been that much concerned, he still lost 61 61 to the young croat...

what do you guys think about the match?

Well I never. If today isn't the Battle of the Chokers, then I don't know what is!

Blake vs Robredo

Ancic vs Ferrer

Oh, and Ljubicic vs Lopez

I wouldn't bother with Feli, but Robredo and Ferrer are clearly EXCELLENT odds and could cause some real trouble for Blake and Ancic. I won't be passing up on either.

01-19-2006, 04:32 PM
Yes, she may look tempting, but she won a single set in 11 meetings with the Williams sisters. I'm tempted too, but I just don't think she's got the mental toughness to beat Serena, not after I've seen her play two times against Davenport - playing well, missing tons of break points and eventually collapsing at the end of the sets. So I wouldn't put big money on this match.

Ferrer over Ancic - The odds here are outrageous. Even with Ancic playing well, and Ferrer not at the top of his game, the prices here are quite unreal. As previously stated, Ferrer will get a lot of balls back in play, and continually force Ancic to play the extra ball. Add to that Ancic's frail mentality, and I would've been surprised to see anything much over 2.15 for Ferrer here. The fact that the odds are so out of line means that it's a definite play.

Simon over Tojo - The young Frenchman is a relatively unknown player, which could explain why everybody automatically sides with Tojo. Admittedly, Tojo is still a great force around the court and played well in a tough match against X-man, but Simon has the ability to beat top players, as he showed against Berdych. At these odds, it's worth a few coins.

Niemenen over Nalbandian - When are the bookies going to give Niemenen the odds he deserves? Nalbandian is yet to find his groove after a supposed turning point in his career in Shanghai last year, and at the same time, the Finn is playing some sick tennis. In a match that will be much closer than the odds suggest, Niemenen's odds are too appealing not to have a crack.

Um... yet to find his groove? As far as I can recall, this is his first ATP tournament since beating Federer and clinching the Masters Cup, and he's in the third round.

I'm coming off two nice wins on Chela and Vliegen from yesterday, and I feel pretty good about todays bets.

Feliciano Lopez over Ivan Ljubicic @ +280 - $400 to win $1122
>>I realize that Ivan Ljubicic is probably playing the best tennis of his career, but the big man's form has been less than stellar to start of the season. Although he won in Chennai, his form looked rather sloppy, losing sets to players like Jiri Vanek and saving match point against Kristof Vliegen. Lopez's form hasn't been great pre-AO, but he's had two really solid performances, most recently a four set victory over Gilles Muller. Ivan hasn't faced a player the level of Lopez yet, and he played another big serving lefty, Chris Guccione, in the first round and played him in a tough match. The big man's serve hasn't been as powerful lately, he's been content with hitting a big kicker, his second serve is noticeably vulnerable. This bodes well for Lopez, he loves high balls and it gives him time to line up and hit his huge forehand. His serve is usually impeccable, so I'm giving Lopez the go in four sets. You can't leave out the fact that Ivan has been poor on break points, and he's still never been past the third round of a slam. Even last year, he had a solid pre-AO performance before going out to Marcos Baghdatis in a piss poor quality match. Lopez has been successful on the rebound ace and doesn't have a big choking problem. The verdict is that Lopez will advance to the fourth round and Ivan will continue his grand slam slump.

Fabrice Santoro over Gaston Gaudio @ +158 - $317 to win $500
>>Bad Gambler summed it up pretty well, when he said Gaudio will go away if he something bothers him, and I couldn't agree more. Gaudio's big strength on the rebound ace is his big backhand, however, Santoro's has an excellent backhand as well so he should be able to match Gaudio shot for shot on that side, taking away Gaudio's biggest advantage against most oppenents. Gaudio likes to have time and a fairly high bounce to set up his big forehand, but that's not going to happen against the viciously low slices of The Magician, Gaudio will also not have an opportunity to do what he does best - grind out points - because Santoro will approach often to put it away at net. I've also looked over Gaudio's losses from last season and it appears as if he's had a lot of trouble with flat ball strikers or players that slice often. It looks as if all the stars are lined up for me to cash in $500 and Santoro to head to the fourth round.

Onto the smaller wagers for today:
Mario Ancic over David Ferrer @ -182 - $182 to win $100
Easy bet, feel like getting some cheap money, Ancic is in great form.
Mara Santangelo over Svetlana Kuznetsova @ +400 - $50 to win $200
Santangelo beat Srebotnik and Golovin, while Kuznetsova went to three against Parra Santonio, too good to pass up.

Adding one more play:

Nalbandian to beat Nieminen - $1.50 (big play)

I'm not going to read too much into Bandy's first round struggles, he is a notorious slow starter in major tournaments. It is around about now where bandy does his best work in slams and although Nieminen may be in the form of his life, bandy is a class above any opponent he has faced this season and how he deals with the argentine's lethal returns will be key. Bandy showed enough to me against stan the man to suggest he is working his way back to top form.

Won off ferrer but lost cause of gaudio.. result for today so far is up marginally positive. Had higher wager on gaudio :(.

Grabbed straight wagers on Nalby @ 1.5 and Lopez @ 3.7...

Still thinking about some type of 2x combo.

sorry for you but why didnt you cover it on live bet??
even when santoro was leading 4-3 in the 5th and gaudio was struggling in fitness, santoro's odds were 2.4 !

I feel sorry for the people who bet on Nalbandian.

He's going to get flogged if the first 3 games are anything to go by.

Not pleased with tonights results.

Won on nalby and ferrer!

Lost on gaudio, lopez, blake!

I wanted to take Tojo last minute but they removed him from the line 2 hours before he played.. guess the reschedule of the match messed up the lines on 5dimes. Shouda take Hantuchova over serena but didnt have the will :P

Result of the day: broke out even.. guess that's better then being down!

For this day:

-congrats to all Ferrer backers, that price was wayyyyyy too big,
-congrats to Santoro backers as well - although he was rather lucky in that last set and looked gone in the 4th,
-and a big :retard: to everyone who bet against Nalbandian and Baghdatis - you guys really need to have your heads checked.
