Hewitt Match- Aussie Commentators should be fired

I am watching Hewitt vs Chela at the moment and i am about to shoot myself. Or go to Rod Laver and shoot John Alexander and Jim Courier. The absolutely pathetic reasons they have made to protect Lleyton have been hiliarious...surely people (regardless of how much you may or may not love hewitt) would see thru this?!!!

1) "The paint on the sidelines arent manufactured the same way as the paint on the baseline....its unfair for lleyton, he cant predict the speed at which the ball will come off the line" --> BLAMING THE PAINT?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: I have been informed that i misquoted this...im sorry, i didnt mean to exagerate it but thats how i remembered it. Apparently "JA" was just saying that they need to invent paint that goes with the surface speed or something. No coincidence that it was after Hewitt missed the ball tho. Of course.

2) "It's so hard to adjust to taping on your ankle...poor lleyton" --> Its professional tennis....He'd be bloody used to it BY NOW

3) My personal favourite..."Chela knows that if he hits it back to Lleyton, it'd be gone for dead. That's the only reason he hit that clean winner"

And more...

4) At the start of the 3rd set, after Lleyton lost the first two...and imagine this in a sincerely excited tone: "lletyon wins FIVE straight points!!!"

5) Middle of the 4th..."He's hit one winner and 5 unforced errors. Look at that Hewitt domination"

6) "Hewitt must get the ball...in"

Bad rep me if you like, but surely you can see how ridiculous that is

I believed this type of comments were the exclusivity of french commentators but...well chauvinistics are everywhere, and they are used to bad faith..when you are patriotic yourself it doesn't bother but when your fav is facing the countryman it's much more annoying

I love Courier but sometimes I think he says nice things about Lleyton to fit in with the obviously incredibly biased Aussie commentators...JA probably being the worst.

My hatred towards that sort of bias knows no bounds. Same goes for my hatred of that sleazy old John Alexander.

this is first time i hear that australian commentator and his love for australians is sickening.

after mark phillipoussis gets destroyed by grosjean the fool says "if mark keeps the hard work up and builds on the form he showed tonight then it is only a matter of time until he is challenging for the major trophies"

I'm surprised about Courier. He's usually the voice of reason and a place of calm in the hype machine, at least here in the States. I've been watching some of the livefeed and there are no commentators. I love it. It's just like being there.

you lie. :o

yes the commentry was very slanted towards lleyton but the comment you quote was not made.

they really said; "why cant they invent paint that is the same speed of the court surface".

whilst i agree teh commentary is extremely bias, please tell me one country where it won't be when you have home commentators commentating on a home player?

but having said, Alexander is a nob but what do you expect when it is coming from channel 7?

Do you seriously think that the Aussie commentators are going to bag Hewitt.

Of course they are going to say things that put him in a better light, they are just catering to the Australian audiences. You go to any other country and it will be the same thing.

Also the paint comment wasn't as over the top as Esther made out. A ball hit the line and skipped on Hewitt as the ball does to everyone else when it hits a line and JA simply asked why the people who make the paint aren't able to make a white paint that is the same speed as the court surface. Sure JA comes out with some pure drivel now and again, but that comment wasn't as bad as it has been made out here.

Dutch commentators don't have to be patriotic to be hilarious, about 90% they say is utter bull. I always try to find the match I want to watch on the BBC, Belgian channels or the internet before I resort to Dutch tv. And then the mute button is immediately pushed. At least the Australian commentators know what they're talking about when it comes to actual tennis.

Besides, there's not a lot they can be patriotic about. Michaela Krajicek, ok, Raemon Sluiter....in challengers, but that's about it.

Well I must say I listened to AO radio (online from the AO website) because I thought it might be better if I did some work rather than be in front of my tv... And I actually was impressed by the professionalism of the commentators. They gave a lot credit to Chela and said when Lleyton was playing crap (which he was let's face it, no point finding excuses). :yeah:
But I have no trouble believing that some on tv can be overpatriotic and make non sense comments ;) (my french compatriots are specialists for that as well as the britts for having followed Wimbly in the UK a few times)

Actually, the Belgian commentators are quite good. They know what they're talking about and are not so patriotic. They hope the Belgian player wins off course, but they analyze the strengths and weaknesses of both players.

I agree with all the points except #1. There is actually bruised bone. Especially cheek bone or shin. They are not very well protected by muscles (or fats ;) ) and when they get hit, not hard enough to get broken or fracture, they bruised. They may not be painful but a nuiance.

ok my bad about the bruised bone- i'll have to remember that for physio next year.

hmm sorry if i exagerated the paint comment, but thats what it sounded like to me. Thats what they were trying to imply anyway, as if it wasnt an excuse to favour hewitt. and yes...of course the commentators will portray the countryman/woman in a good light, but this is just ridiculous

Haha surpisingly enough I never picked up on the commentators bias (because I always listen out for it) mabye I was just really really getting into the match. Reminds me of the US Open final of Federer VS Hewitt with John Newcombe commentating.

Before the match: Hewitt will be sure to win this

During the match: Hewitt can still come back and beat Federer

After the match: I can't believe Hewitt lost, he'll beat Federer next time.

i think a lot of this is misunderstood. i happen to like JA more than most other aussie commentators. he has a very subtle sense of sarcasm... i wouldn't be surprised that he was sarcastic when it came to that 'hewitt domination' lol

i suppose i wasn't paying that much attention either but the only occasion when i noticed bias was when they were studying statistics for a 5th set, as if that's a sure bet... i was thinking 'you gotta be dreaming'

John Alexander is so one-eyed he's a friggin' cyclops! ...

as for Courier, well I like him, and I do find him to be the voice of reason amongst all of JA's dribble - he certainly puts him in his place from time to time, which I love :yeah:

... I remember JA carrying on about Hewitt during the AO final last year ... and Courier said something like "I don't really care who wins, I just wanna see a game" :bigclap: ... JA's response was that there was more interest in "Result first and Game second" ... pathetic... I was hoping they'd be rid of him for this year, but alas no ... give him a gold watch and send him on his way Channel 7 :yeah:

Curls
01-20-2006, 04:47 AM
actually I recall at the end of the second set last night, JA said that Lleyton was sitting down as if there was no problem and he was just getting on with his business ... Couriers comment was brilliant - something like "If Lleyton is 2 sets down and doesn't think he's got a problem ...... he's wrong!" ... JA was quiet for a little while after that  :yeah:

BHH1988

i have to say that is pretty ridiculous but the paint thing, though it is incredibly stupid, is not quite as stupid as it sounds. The type of paint used can make a huge difference with the speed of the court. Much of the difference between the speed of hard courts (for example, the speed of Nasdaq100 courts and US Open courts) has to do with the type of paint used, so paint defintely does dictate the speed of a court in a large sense, but nonetheless the comment is rather absurd, especially since Chela is going through the same as Hewitt, and I'm sure Hewitt's used to it by now since he DID get to the finals last year after all....
