Yeah, I'm not so worried about Nico losing to Fena as I just want them both to win the title and that's not possible! So the best possible outcome from my view is that they meet in the final-which I would not be able to watch. :awww: No I think Nico can do well in Vina-he'll be back on clay and he's been playing well like you say Alonso. :yeah:

Nico's back in Chile!

Good luck in the draw tonight NICO!

From latercera.cl:

At around 2:00 p.m. yesterday, Nicolas Massú returned to Chile. Coming from Buenos Aires, where was coaching far away of the activity. The number two of the country passed a while by Santiago before being directed to Vina del Mar, where today will attend the drawing of the ATP.

In Argentina, Massu was practicing in the club Rational Sports with his coach
Gabriel Markus and his physical coach, Horacio Anselmi.

Hans Gildemeister, captain of Davis Cup, had declared the intention to go with Massú to Rancagua, so that to know the court of the matches of Cup Davis before Slovakia. Nevertheless, the father of the player, Manuel Massú, ruled out such possibility.

Nico has Brazilian Marcos Daniel in the first round.

Daniel is ranked 94th in the world, and he only seems to play challengers where he seemed to have a lot of success last year (which accounts for the higher ranking).

I can't find the full draw. If I can find it, I'll post it.

From latercera.cl:

"I am returning and nothing is easy"

Nicolas Massú has a definite objective for 2006: to be again the one that was, when he was 9° in the world and when won two Olympic medals. All al serves him viñamarino. Every sum. Even victories before rival that it do not require al maximum, as occurred with Marcos Daniel.

"I am returning. Nothing is easy to this height, of another form would not be 69. I live a with me same revenge. Therefore, to beat Daniel 6-3 and 6-3 is very good for me. I do not know if was dangerous or not", commented the "Vampire".

On its next rival one, Juan Antonio Marín or Hugo Arming, confessed that did not have preferences. "With that type of players I should take advantage of my power", finalized.

From terra.cl:

The second national racquet, Nicolas Massú (69) advanced to second round of the Movistar Open 2006, after conquering to their rival one in the first day, the Brazilian Marcos Daniel (95), by a double one 6-3 and to obtain a first triumph in two years in the event viñamarino. Set against this, the double Olympic medalist asserted that "I at this time am returning and nothing is easy, if for my was easy would not be in the position 69 of the world", mentioning that "that is to say if was easy when was 9".

"Now that I am back, is a with me same revenge, itself cannot be asked you that of a day another have all the confidence, that is to say one can be coached, to be well mentally, but the matches that give you confidence are the ones that win there, and to beat Marcos Daniel 6-3, 6-3 is good" asserted the native.

Likewise, Massú expressed that now "I am more calm than ever, because if I have learned something in this time is to handle me in the things that when smaller could not handle. I believe that when one this up one should take advantage of, when these badly you should raise you with the front in high, the sportsman in if cannot be worried that if are 15 years old of careers are going to be 15 spectacular years, nobody has him, I was 2 years spectacular and now I go from to little".

On the other hand, and set against the question of whom he prefers as its next rival one, Massú indicated that ¿I have to go match to match, and I cannot think more in the following rival one, I should think about each ball¿.

Nevertheless, Massu thought that Armando or José Antonio Marín (their potential reefs in second return) "the two very are seemed, the two try to be covered a lot the reverse, are two players that are always seeking the right and I am going to treat of playing it in the better way than being able, because here costs a lot to move the ball, this quite heavy one the court and with this type of players that are enough solids is more difficult to impose my power".

So sweet of him to do this! A big  and  for Nico!

From the Movistar site:

Nicolas Massu will visit the children of the hospital Gustavo Fricke

One of the activities pertaining to the agenda of the Movistar Open for ATP 2006 Vina del Mar, is the visit of Nicolas Massú to the children of the Hospital Gustavo Fricke.

Nicolas Massú, after to have passed to the second round of the Movistar Open, defeating al Brazilian Frameworks Daniel, only will not show its better tennis in the courts of clay of the Club the Salinas, if not that also, will collaborate in the execution of the social activities that prepared this year the Movistar Open 2006 Vina del Mar. Tomorrow Tuesday to the 12:00 hrs, the Chilean player, will take charge of carrying all the happiness and will count more than a sports anecdote to the children of the Hospital Gustavo Fricke, who they expect anxious the visit of the player.

Pretty much the same as the other ones, but some additional comments.

From the Movistar site:

Despite lose his service in the second play of the set initial and to remain 0-2 down in the account, Massu imposed its terms and thanks to the greater solidity of its performance, that based on deep blows and to the lines, managed to structure a double one 6-3.

“All the ones that are here play well and they are complicated. Perhaps when it accelerated the ball did more damage than he (Daniel) and therefore I won”, responded al to be consulted by the level of its rival one.

The second national racquet admitted it complex of its professional moment, that illustrated with the poor location in the ranking. “I am returning. In these moments nothing is easy for me. I am in a with me same revenge and itself cannot be asked to have of a day for another the confidence of all”, recognized.

“You can be excellently well in all, but the matches that give you confidence are the ones that win there and to win 6-3 and 6-3 is good”, added.

The viñamarino assured that “the great player, the one that arrives up, knows to handle the pressure and does the difference. It feels of different way the fact to play at home. I believe that with the to pass from the years one goes learning things and no longer surprises me so much to be here”.

From latercera.cl:

Nicolas Massú does not have matches that he can dominate easily. It is reencontrándose with his play and does not have all the confidence that needs for that. What has now is the same thing that has had always, a lot of push and desires to search them to him to do well, what gave him, among others achievements, two medals in the Olympic Games. And in Vina del Mar, with rival third-rate as has had in the two first rounds, that suffices him to continue in career.

Before Juan Antonio Marín, the viñamarino did a better encounter of what had done in its début, front al Brazilian Marcos Daniel. It was observed greater authority and very few errors. From time to time, he was capable of carrying out remove and network without any type of objection, besides throwing winners since the fund of court. Nevertheless, then it fell in the slow play of the Costa Rrican, whose only plan was to seek him the reverse to Massu, and permitted that the rival one to grow for some moments.

But never it enlarged it. It maintained it to line during the long 90 minutes of play and broke him two times the service, what sufficed to close the business for 6-3 and 6-4. Not even its complaints by the breaks that sufría the court (insoluble problem up to now) removed it of their objective.

More calm

The anxiety is perhaps the worst enemy than can have the viñamarino in these days. He is known so coached, that many times he is noted hyper, too much hurried, tempted to define the things more fast of what his style permits him.

The greater réditos obtains them, as is known, when calms down and leaves that its blows flow naturally. He lacks a little to realize that to time during the matches and to continue in the rise that comes experiencing in this season. Does not yet it light up neither annihilates as wanted, but al less is winning and that always collaborates a player as temperamental as the tennis player viñamarino.

Massú can continue accumulating confidence in the Naval Club The Salinas. Tomorrow, in quarterfinals, leaves him al step Carlos Caudrado, a Spaniard originating from the classifications with which never has played. Opponent of scarce lineage, if thinks itself about the semifinal of daydream before Fernando González, to whom already faced without greater success the 2004, in the quarterfinals the contest viñamarino.

On the other hand, the second national racquet continues improving its record at home: with the two encounters that won adds eight won matches and seven lost. The task now is to continue improving.

From latercera.cl:

Massú: "I should go step by step"

Nicolas Massú was satisfied with the performance that showed last night before the Costa Rican Juan Antonio Marín.

"This type of players is characterized for playing many long points and one is obliged to do all. But I felt well. When I rose to the network I played well and I was aggressive, what helps a lot with this type of players", commented the viñamarino.

The number two of Chile will play tomorrow before Spanish Carlos Cuadrado and already a match in semifinals before Fernando González.

"I hope be given. Still I have to win Friday. I should go step by step... and if is given, the two we will do possible the best", explained Massú.

The national player said that each day feels better and that still needs to win more matches to arrive at its better level: "I work very hard and that in some moment is paid".

From terra.cl:

The victory by second round of Nicolas Massú on Juan Antonio Marin left al national player very pleased, because according to its words could be enough more aggressive than in his début, front Brazilian Marcos Daniel just as had conversed with his coach Gabriel Markus and that gives him confidence in his performance.

In this sense, Massú maintained that "I am happy, because last year in this date did not be able neither to jog, was seeing the championship by the television and just as step during all the year; then everything that I am causing is merit is playing al 80% or al 100, all is good".

"I come and I am telling him from December; each day I am feeling better, I each day feel playing better, logically to arrive al level of the 2003-2004 I lack full, but already I was in quarterfinals in Auckland and already I am in the quarterfinals here, that is a great improvement and for my that is important, because validates I have done everything that, as to have been during the month and middle in Buenos Aires, coaching every day without stopping and in some moment that pays" indicated the double Olympic medalist.

On the match, the viñamarino detailed that "when one plays at night, with the so heavy court, slope to do winners and the truth is that I played very well, voleé very well and the blows of three rooms of court for ahead, that we have been practicing with Gabriel for a very long time, this all well".

Likewise, on the possibility to face to Fernando González in semifinals, Massú mentioned that for that, "I hope I can win first Friday... one must worry of the following match, and if is given, is given, to each one is going to touch him to do it the best than being able, this is a work and one must do it in the better way".

On the other hand, on his next rival one, Spanish Carlos Cuadrado, Massú explained that "for a long time him do not I see, was coached that three years ago with Duck Álvarez, that does as three or four years I won Roland Garros in junior, and is a typical Spanish player that hits him hardly, he is going to be a hard match".

Finally, the semifinalist of Vina del Mar in the year 2003, he detailed that "to all the tournaments that go in my career I am going to win them, since the first one to it finalizes ball I have the illusion to win it, and each time that one desire feels well and each time that one loses, one must raise al following day and to continue working and coaching".

First msn and now this with its priority acces damn!

Well here I go again, Rosie my best wishes to you  everything will be okay!

It's such a shame about Gaston, poor him  and it's a shame for the argentinian team, everytime that I see that term of tendonitis I freack out 'cause it reminds me the tough year that Nico had for one of those tendonitis... Hopefullly Gaston will recover very soon.

And Buena Suerte to Nico!!! :yeah: maybe Cuadrado is psyched for playing against him but the desire that Nico has to win this tournament is even bigger so if he continues playing like the last matches and beign relax and focus like he's beign he'll be great today!!

So Vamos Nico!!! You can do it!!!! :bounce:

p.s. Alonso thank God you'll be here doing the live ticket  and it'd be a great idea to have a thread for that in Nico's forum, I get lose in the other threads with so many posts

I feel like you Fergie-I can't really choose one but it would be nice for Nico to win in Vina as Fernando has won it twice. Still, I can't/won't cheer against Fena either-this will drive me crazy!!! :awww:

Oh God! after today's match I'm definetely not prepared for this semifinal :sobbing:

Everyone in Chile is happy and we're so nervous about this  why they couldn't be in different sides of the draw?? why?!?!?! :bigcry:

I really can't preddict what would happen tomorrow but I know something for sure, Nico desearves and needs more this tittle than Feña and sadly I know that most of the crowd will be rooting for Feña, if Nico could only forget that he's playing against his friend (like Feña does) and fight in they way that he did it today he could do it!

I could barely take today's match so I don't know how I'm going to handle the semifinal.

My best wishes to you Nico!!! You know that you've us here rooting and suffering for you!! So Buena Suerte!!!

FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT LIKE YOU ALWAYS DO!!!!! :boxing: IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!!!!

Let's going to win this at home sweetie!!!! :bounce:

Well I definitely can pick one...lol!...and definitely can root very very very very hard against Fernando. ;)

I want NICO to win this.

And I don't want Fernando to win even one set.

So for today I'll stay off the message boards because I really can't be happy at all for Fernando if he wins, and hearing everyone say oh its okay that he lost to Fernando will make me want to scream.

Yes, very possible.

The match didn't end until something like 2:15/2:30 a.m. Chile time. Then I'm sure he had to go get something to eat, then finally bed - maybe at like 4:00 a.m.? Don't obviously know exactly, but I would have to think that he might have had problems getting to sleep too because he was soooo excited.

But with that said - he was tired in Athens too! :)

He's a good friend - so sweet.

From latercera.cl:

The Chilean tennis player Nicolas Massú recognized that "was not very pleasant" to conquer his countryman and friend Fernando González this Saturday for 4-6, 7-6(3) and 6-4 in the 'semifinal dreamed' of the ATP of Vina del Mar.

"It was not very pleasant to beat Fernando González. It is one of my better friends and tin plating gives me that have that to face and that one have that to remain outside. I would like to have earned any person, less to Fernando", assured Massú.

The double Olympic champion in Athens 2004 felt in agreement of to have arrived at its first end in Vina del Mar, after recalling that this is the second edition that has been able to play al maximum of its capacities (the other was in 2002) after the injuries that diminished its possibilities, especially last year when could not attend.

Massú recognized that this commitment was very difficult and that the tactic complicated it of González. "In a moment Fernando was dominating me, he was playing a little short, he was attacking me and I did not what he know to do. But later I played deep, I sought my right, I played more put and there I began to play better", he explained.

The tennis player viñamarino should scramble three hours and thirteen minutes to conquer al 'Bomber of the Queen', similar time that used for defeat in the quarterfinals Spanish Carlos Cuadrado (308º).

It weights al effort, the 'Vampire' ruled out to be felt exhausted, "I played six hours in the last two matches but I am calm, in the Olympics (Athens 2004) was 20 more tired times than now, I played to five sets match and I finished playing", clarified.

The second national racquet declared, looking al defining match with the Argentine champion in double José Acasuso (46º), "I agree not with to have arrived at the end and I want to win".

The finalist of the ATP of Vina was shown in agreement with the work carried out next to its Argentine coach Gabriel Markus, and he indicated that he knew that in some moment its work would give results. "I coached so that this moment arrived and by luck arrived quick", finalized.

Massú will play this Sunday the end of the ATP of Vina del Mar since the 22:00 hours and if defeats to Acasuso will conquer the sixth title of his career and the first one in Chile.

I'm ready to cheer for Nico with my chilean flag

I'm so jealous. You have a great time, and we'll be thinking of you with your flag!

I finally actually watched the match this afternoon.

First, it was so wonderful hearing everyone chanting NI-CO NI-CO when he was serving for the match and up 30-0. And then after he won, the crowd started to chant his name again. Was very cool.

But what a close match. The first set was all Fernando. He was aggressive, and Nico seemed tight. At the beginnning of the second set, Nico started to get aggressive, they were neck and neck like two boxers in a ring just duking it out. But then at the end of the second set, the momentum slightly went to Nico who began to take control, adn then Nico really did take control in the tiebreak. But in the 3rd, that score at 5-1 seems lopsided, but really Nico had to work hard to hold his serve, and had to work hard to break Fernando. Adn then Fernando came back a bit.

Kind of proves what I've been saying ;) that these two guys are very close talent wise - yeah, one may be better than the other at certain times, but then it switches. And they both seem to have accomplished about the same in their careers. So let hope we don't have to have the discussion again about who is better. ;)

Both need to work on some things. There were times that if Nico played any further back, he'd have been in the stands. His backhand - as usual. But he moved well, and I loved that he started to play aggressive. Fernando played excellent - his forehand is just incredible! Just seemed tired in the 3rd set. Still concerned about his never having much of an offseason becuase of Shanghai is affecting his play becuase he's fatigued. And I don't know what he was thinking - he was doing a Guille imitation with the constant drop shots. Unfortunately its not his shot like it is Guille's. ;) Like the commentator said - its working only about 10% of the time. I don't know why he kept doing it.

And again, when Nico tapped Gaby on the cheek at the end - very touching. I hope he's paying Gaby well, because he certainly owes this comeback to him. And his own hard work of course. BRAVO to Nico for all his sacrifice and hard work. :worship:

Of course this is all just my humble opinion. ;)

VAMOS NICO!

Fight tonight! :boxing:

And forgot - so cool when he won - he rolled on the ground (got himself all dirty  ), and then started pounding his hand on the court and yelling. It was wild. There's a picture of it in the pictures thread that Fergie posted - too bad its a Getty Image because of course they put the logo over his face. ;) But you can still see.

And this morning, things look brighter. If it wasn't Vina, I would be whooo hooo'ing that Nico made the finals after such a tough 2005. This is an excellent result - truly excellent for him and shows how hard he's working.

From latercera.cl:

Nicolas Massú has had six coaches in his career. Each one it has marked a phase of its life tenística, but clearly Gabriel Markus already has a special place. Despite the end loss last night, the Argentine complies for these days a fundamental work in the recovery of the double Olympic champion, although he is certain that still he remains a lot of road by traveling through before becoming again among the better of the world.

It is not coincidence what is achieving the transandino. The first time that guided al Chilean (final of 2002 until May of 2004) also obtained large things. In that first phase the national player gained two titles (Amersfoort and Palermo, besides the end of the Masters Series of Madrid), coming to be 12° of the world.

To half of last year, Massú opted for calling again to "Gaby" so that guided it in the Tour, in a very complicated moment of its career. They began of zero the 2006, far from the better of the world. The task of Markus was not simple, therefore should deliver him the weapons to its pupilo so that to believe again in its conditions. And from to little it is achieving it.

This year adds the quarterfinals in Auckland and the final in Vina del Mar. Enough, considering that the 2005 finalized it losing consecutively in the first round of six tournaments.

Therefore the words of gratitude of Massú. "All this I am dedicated him to my coach, because has helped me a lot when I have been low".

"My work has been to adjust some technical things and to calm down to Nico. I know that thus will be again among the better", added Markus.
