Maybe if they offer him a WC, he'll go to Wroclaw?

His ranking now isn't good enough, obviously.

I'm almost sure there's a rule that a player who enters a challenger cannot get a wild card to another event

Anyways, I hope they give Fryta a WC :)

Uhhh... the thing is guys may go play doubles in South America. Pity there aren't the doubles entry lists anymore. Looks like the guys still don't know where they will play.
The new rule about entry list has this bad luck that players might show up at the place and get informed they are too low ranked and can't play

If guys stay in Poland, it is very very very possible both Matka and Fryta will get WC's. But I guess I'll know something more tomorrow when I meet the right people.

Some Aussie players like Luczak, Guccione and Healey are not playing here. I think they prefer playing qualies from ATPs (Luczak in South America and Guccione and Healey in the U.S.), or maybe this has something to do with Davis Cup. But it's odd, since this is one of the very few challengers they have on home soil, and the field is pretty weak - they could well earn some points here.

It's played when the circuit leaves Australia. These Australian Challengers always feature a poor field, because players refuse to get a jet lag from going back to Australia. I wouldn't go back either. Few points, jet lag, poor preparation for good events.

I think the Challenger is weak but still improves the quality of the Futures. Normally most of the players will also play the AUS and NZL Futures.

Ok, but I assume that the players I mentioned actually live in Australia, so it shoudn't be a problem for them to stick around for two weeks or so after the Australian Open ends, and then, after this challenger, leave to play the qualies from the ATP tournaments.

And there is also a challenger in Hawaii two weeks earlier, and Hawaii is not so far away from Oceania.

It's only a small challenger and Guccione won it last year and he needs to play some other events and if the Aussies had any brains Luczak will be in the DC tie against the Swiss, so he isn't sure of which events he is going to play after DC.

Yeah, Luczak can play well on clay, unlike most of the others.

Let's hope he's in good enough shape to play *anywhere* that week. Yep, being a fan of Austrians is kind of contagious for me  First Jurgen...then Oliver... Marco... Stefan...now Rainer.

Good luck to these guys, Johan, and a couple of wayward Aussies

Coehlo through to Burnie quarterfinals

Burnie, February 9 - Victorian teenager Andrew Coelho showed why he is one of Australia’s most promising tennis hopes when he advanced to the quarterfinals of the US$25,000 Kia International in Burnie today.

Coelho was too consistent for Great Britain’s Lee Childs, winning the match 6-3 6-3 in difficult, windy conditions which have tested the players all week.

"I just tried to get as many balls as I could back into play," Coelho said after the match. "At the start I was making a lot of errors…then I started making a lot of returns on his serve and making him play, and the more I kept the ball in play the more he’d miss."

The win was impressive given it was only Coelho’s third challenger tournament and next he will face his biggest test – top seed Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei.

Lu secured his quarterfinal berth with a comfortable 6-2 6-4 win over Raphael Durek of New South Wales.

Great Britain’s Jamie Baker caused an upset when he defeated No.5 seed Robert Smeets in straight sets 6-4 7-6(4).

Hailing from Scotland, Baker was at home in the blustery conditions saying, "I always enjoy playing outdoors more than I do indoors. Tennis for me is more enjoyable when its outdoors because there are so many other factors that you have to deal with."

In the afternoon match on centre court, third seeded wildcard Nathan Healey from New South Wales overcame the wind and a persistent calf injury to scrape over unseeded American, David Martin 3-6 7-6(8) 6-2.

Martin even held a match point against Healey in the second set tiebreak, but a more consistent all-round game got the 25 year-old through to the quarterfinals where he will face unseeded Jamie Baker from Great Britain.

Quarterfinal matches will continue tomorrow from 11.00am, with an all-Australian twilight match scheduled at 5.30pm between Alun Jones from the ACT and Shannon Nettle from South Australia.

TODAY’S RESULTS – Second Round, Part Two – Kia International in Burnie
