2006 ATP Tennis Record: 7-2 (+$1590)

Another great night with my biggest wager of the year winning on Feli's demolishing of Muller. Let's have another good one.

---------------------------------------

Round 2: Thursday, January 19, 2006

Max Mirnyi -133 over David Sanguinetti ($665 to win $500)

I know Sanguinetti leads the lifetime meetings 2-1 but both his wins over Mirnyi were in Italy and we are now in Australia. This is the first time they eve meet on hardcourts and I definitely give the edge to Mirnyi here. He looked very rusty and very shaky in his opening match but give some credit to Ascione who gave a good effort in his loss. Max has not had much success in recent years at the Open but he has been to the 3rd Round in the past. Sanguinetti has not. Mirnyi is better suited for the hardcourts and his lifetime record shows it. If you ask me, Sanguinetti's first match against Adaktusson was not really a success because the Swede shot himself in the foot with bad play. The match lasted only three sets yet the Swede made 63 unforced errors and Sanguinetti made 39 unforced errors. Mirnyi on the other hand played a five-setter and made only 23 unforced errors while Ascione was even sharper making only 17 unforced errors. If Sanguinetti makes that many unforced errors again today, Mirnyi is going to win this in three sets easily. Sanguinetti's 1st serve % was only 57% while Mirnyi's was 74%. This goes to who how well Ascione played and how much of a lesser opponent Mirnyi is facing today in Sanguinetti. Give me a win by the beast.

Kristof Vliegen +122 over Fernando Verdasco ($100 to win $122)

This is a tough one to go with (it is anytime you side with underdogs) but I really like Vliegen to advance to his first ever 3rd Round at a Grand Slam. Vliegen is a late bloomer on the verge of making some noise on the ATP Tour. I get that vibe after he kicked off the year with ass whippings of Wang, Schuettler and Srichaphan before givigin Ljubicic a good run for his money in the sem-finals of Doha. Vliegen loves the hardcourts while Verdasco is a dirt baller at best. Vliegen's big serve is going to be his weapon in this one seeing that Verdasco allowed 7 aces to Kenneth Carlsen in Round 1. Vliegen had 17 aces in his Round 1 match with Christophe Rochus and I expect to see him dominate the long ball game. Verdaco was 2 of 15 on break point chances against Kenneth Carlsen which is something that just won't work against a guy like Vliegen. The Belge took every chance he got against Rochus and converted 6 of his 8 break point chances. Verdasco doesn't have the head on his shoulders to win a match where he will be bombarded with booming serves and I really like the underdog Vliegen to win this one.

Luis Horna -167 over Bjorn Phaun ($167 to win $100)

Very small stakes on this one guys because I don't quite trust Horna on hardcourts (even though he was awesome in late 2005 in both Washington and Cincinnati) and I am not sure what to expect. Horna is coming off a fantastic opening match where he sent the tired Gael Monfils packing early. Phau on the other hand struggled to beat qualifier Carlos Bercloq. In fact, Phau was horrendous, comitting 69 unforced errors but somhow he held on to win the match. Phau struggled badly with his serve which is not good for a match like this one. Horna doesn't do anything special but he is composed and he is very concentrated on getting his first serve in (84% in his first match) and he doesn't force shots enough to make mistakes. Believe it or not Phau is older than Horna but Horna's game is much more developped and much more controlled. If Horna loses a set in this match it will be via tie-breaker. Horna has never made it past the first round of a Grand Slam and now that he has done it, why not come out and make it to the 3rd Round. I like Horna a lot here but again I will keep it small.

I'd give the nod to Vliegen...but not my cash ;)

Leaving Sangers and Mirnyi to it...I think the Italian might triumph though.

That Italian was horrible in Round 1. He got away playing against a piece of crap that made it look like he played well. If Sanguinetti plays anywhere near what he did like in Round 1, he is gone in 3 sets.

I echo that good question.

Phau hasn't got anything much in his game that can really hurt someone, apart from maybe consistency. If Horna is firing then he ought to win comfortably.

Need a secure parlay and I can't see past this one to do the trick:

Andreev x Ferrero x Haas @ 1.69.
I would put Dominator in there as well but I'm a little concerned about his R1.

Thinking also of:

Horna x Rochus @ 1.93

Maybe add an Aussie combo of Hewitt x Healey @ 3.08

Just as Jez said: Phau has consistency on his side. He might not have anything particularly spectacular or brilliant about his game, but what he IS able to do, he keeps doing. Horna on the other hand is so totally on and off, you never know where you stand with him. As least with Bjorn there's some degree of security.

Horna may well win, and the best of luck to you guys, but with those good odds on Phau I am more than happy to take the risk.

Oh, and good luck to all of us Healey backers. May he do us proud! :D

The value bets for today would be vligien-verdasco, mirnyi-sanguinetti, and healey-delic.

Verdasco's experience on hardcourt will hopefully get him through. Undecided on whether I will bet on this match.

I wouldn't read too much into Healey's win over Volandri (horrible on hc) as he was injured (he retired in his last match the week before in Auckland). On the otherhand Delic struggled against Starace but won against Healey in Feb., 2005, in the round of 32 of the Dallas Challenger 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(12). This match is a 'No' bet for me.

I'm also not touching the mirnyi match.

I have a good feeling about today, I'm still way up from last season, so I can still go big on some risky bets despite some tough losses from Monday. Didn't really have much time to look at any odds yesterday. Going with underdogs today.

1.Sanguinetti d. Mirnyi @ 2.22 - $410 to win $500
>>Davide might not have been very solid in his match against Adaktusson, but that should give him a good amount of confidence, knowing that he won comfortably without playing nearly his best tennis. On the other hand, Mirnyi got taken to five sets by Thierry Ascione, who's pretty much a pushover. My verdict is that Sanguinetti's baseline prowess and passing shots is going to overwhelm the inconsistent Mirnyi in four sets.

2.Chela over Hewitt @ 3.04 - $488 to win $1000
>>Hewitt's form hasn't been spectacular to say the least, he was a few points from losing to Robin Vik, whose got a neutral, weak baseline game. Two losses in the last two weeks to Andreas Seppi and Phillip Kolschreiber really shouldn't be much of a confidence booster to him either. On the other hand, Chela is coming off a crushing disposal of Andy Murray and he's going to be pumped with memories of last year's encounter, he's been talking about it constantly, while Hewitt has been playing it down. I say Chela's power baseline game will dispose of Hewitt's terrible recent form and silly errors in four sets, with two relatively easy ones. I'm confident about this.

Also, two small wagers on:
Bogomolov Jr. over Mathieu @ 3.05 - $47 to win $100
Vliegen over Verdasco @ 2.16 - $87 to win $100

What do you guys think?

Vliegen over Verdasco @ 2.16 - $87 to win $100

What do you guys think?
Lost on Sanguinetti and won with Vliegen.

Sorry about the lateness guys:

Andreev x Ferrero x Haas x Hrbaty @ 1.79

Good luck! :yeah:

Hoping HrBaty takes out norman soon! I got +7 1/2 points on norman hehe... If norm pulls off this 4th set and then gets bageled in the 5th would suck

I like that if you're betting very small wage... I took E.Loit over Mauresmo for $5 bucks just for kicks.. Pays $38.75...

Betting against him with real funds is true gambling LoL

Phau hasn't got anything much in his game that can really hurt someone, apart from maybe consistency. If Horna is firing then he ought to win comfortably.

Man I'm so full of shit! I identify the right match and don't put the wager on it!! :banghead: :smash:

If Ferrero wins I'm thinking of placing this since I'm up for the night by a lot:

M.HINGIS GAMES WON -6 1.699

Chances are hingis will knock this one out 6-1, 6-2 type score.. hoping :)

Alrite just put down my bets..

1.) Kiefer x Andreev x Davydenko x Ferrero (highest wager) = 1.901
2.) Haas x Horna = 1.766
3.) Healey = 2.40
4.) Chela (very small wager just for kicks) = 2.860
5.) Norman +7 1/2 games over Hybrty = 1.917
6.) Sanguinetti x Rochus = 2.761

Finally a great night! Recovered almost all my loses from Monday. Assuming Haas wins and Chela bet is too small to be anything :)

Gonna take this wager right now before Hingis starts playing:
W.Arthurs/S.Huss 1.476 x Hingis -6 games 1.699 = 2.50

Misa K x Hewitt - $2.30

Wow bookies have gotten off hewitt with a blink of an eye, $1.50? Even though he is playing at about 70%, still should be too good for the alpaca, he loves playing at night and a packed RLA should see him through. And trust me, the crowd will be very unsporting against the alpaca after last year's incident, it's going to be a mob like atmoshpere against him
