And Deb, Amer deserves a capital. ;) *hands him Rome*

Good list! Thiago, Mello and Frederic!

01-18-2006, 08:56 PM
Mello on the list, that's weird.

Perhaps it's just a backup plan in case Meligeni doesn't call him for DC, or maybe some decision has already been made and communicated here, by Meligeni or Mello.

Time will tell. :p

Why is Mardy not playing this :fiery:

Fee
01-24-2006, 01:13 AM
Good point, he should have signed up for it, but maybe they wanted to give him a break before he plays a bunch of weeks in a row?

Deboogle!.
01-24-2006, 10:23 PM
He's probably going to lose early on all the ATP-level events, this would be an opportunity where he'd actually have the chance to get some matches and thus confidence back :(

Unless he'll go to DC to practice with the guys or something (Sorry, wishful thinking on my part;))

Fee
01-24-2006, 11:12 PM
Or, San Jose has not promised him a Wildcard, and he has to be ready for qualies there. If Tommy really is planning to play SJ the week after Davis Cup in Germany, then that would be all 3 of them (Tommy, Flip, Sarge) and Mardy is left out.

Deboogle!.

Flip and Sarge over Mardy??? :ras:

Does anyone know why Mamiit AND Taino are playing for "PHI" now? They haven't played Daviscup for Philippines until now?

It was late last year when they came here to represent our country for the Southeast Asian Games and they actually won. Then they finally decided to play for our country on the atp circuit as well as will play for the davis cup this year.

They played - and won gold medals - for the Phillipines recently in the Southeast Asian games ( http://noelledeg.blogspot.com/2005/11/mamiit-and-taino-for-gold.html ). I know I read something recently about them switching, but I can't find it now, I think it may have been on Tennis-x, of all places.

1st Round Match Updates from Dallas:

- Great turnout so far in Dallas...stands have been filled, especially last night for the Donald Young v. Rehnquist match.

- Bjorn Rehnquist d. Donald Young 6-3, 4-6, 6-2: Young at age 16 looks extremely talented. When you watch him it is easy to forget this guy is only 16…he hits with great variety - mixes power, slice, looping topspin, slows the pace during rallies, volleys pretty well. This was a very entertaining match but Bjorn got a critical break in the 3rd which demoralized the young American. Bjorn did an amazing job of tracking balls down and staying in rallies. In the end, Young was broken serving at 2-3 in the third. Then Bjorn held serve making it 5-2. A dejected Young played a few loose/wild points and was broken again to end the match. Young does needs work on his serve, especially his second serve (which is very weak) - I'm sure that will come as he gets stronger. Seemed like a great fighter...I'm glad I got to see him play. Bjorn has nice ground strokes and speed. His second serve is a bit of a liability. He probably does not have enough firepower to win this indoor event. One thing in his favor is that the courts are slow and newly resurfaced so you never know…

- Amer Delic vs. Simon Gruel 6-4,7-6 (5): Gruel is a former champion in Dallas and this was a great match with a strange ending. On match point Delic hit a winner on the baseline that was called out (which would have made it 6-6 in the TB) but the chair umpire overruled which made it game, set, match. The ball did look like it caught the line but it was a weird ending to a good match. Gruel is a very good baseliner and very fast. He seems to have a new service motion and it is pretty effective now. Amer played very well, much more consistent than in the past. Great volleys, big serve, and very nice consistency on his ground strokes. Seems to be mixing in the slice backhand much more to stay in rallies. When he does hit the topspin backhand he is often attacking and he was doing that very well with it yesterday - many down the line backhand winners for him. If Amer plays this well he has a chance to win the tournament…the guy has great potential.

Jeff Morrison d. Zach Fleishman 6-1,6-3: Morrison played extremely well except for a few minor service double faults. He absolutely dominated the match from the baseline. He also mixed in some net play. It was a dominating performance. He can win this tournament...

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez d. Todd Windom 6-2,6-3: My first time to see either of these guys. I see how Garcia-Lopez could take down Andre...he has major talent. Big serve and great powerful ground strokes. He was inconsistent against Windom last night and often had very long service games. Windom is a powerful shorter guy that tends to hit quite hard. I got the impression that he knew he had to play a high risk sort of game to have a chance. I liked his fight but in the end Garcia-Lopez was too good. Garcia-Lopez at times looks like a very big talent but then would seem to lose focus. Could be the most talented guy in Dallas this week...

Justin Gimelstob vs. Ivo Heuberger 6-3, 6-1: Not really very close. Gimelstob was too accurate with his ground strokes and serve...pushed Heuberger around the court and then put away easy volleys.

Rajeev Ram d. Michael Ryderstedt 6-4, 6-4: Great match between last years champ Ryderstedt and Ram. Ram is serving and volleying much less now but does look for opportunities to come to net during the rally. Ram is a fantastic volleyer and his net play and ability to end points was the difference. Ryderstedt tries to end points from the baseline and Ram did enough chasing to stay in many points and extract an error. Ram looked very good and is developing quite well.

I've heard of the Becker guy. Last October, he went through qualifying at a Futures and beat Zack in the final. Zack told me he is a heck of player, probably better than his ranking, he's just not consistent. Don't remember the particulars of his game tho, and I've never seen him play.

I could be wrong but I think Becker was the #1 college player a couple of years ago at Baylor.

Preview from the tourney site:

Sam Querrey (#615) vs. Benjamin Becker (#402).

Ct. 6 – not before 8.00pm

This match up promises to be the best quarter final. Sam recorded the biggest win of his young career in beating Guillermo Garcia Lopez (#88) in straight sets yesterday 6-3, 6-4. That was his first win over a guy in the top 100. Guillermo beat Andre Agassi last week, and Andre said he got overpowered. Well folks, Guillermo definitely got overpowered by Sam, as he blasted ace after ace, and even served four aces in a row to win a game. But he now comes up against a player who is so in form he is seeing the ball like a watermelon in Benjamin Becker. Benjamin will return better, make less errors and pressure Sam more, so this will be a huge match!! Let’s get ready to ruuuuuuuummmmmmmbbbbbbbbblllllllllllllllllllllllll ee!!!!

hrmmm ... Mendocino? Santa Rosa? Lake Tahoe? :p

Thanks for the info., and would you be able to find out if Becker's nickname is Boris? and if not, why not?

And what about Sam Querrey - any info on him?

Querrey is a power player...Supposedly played a huge power game yesterday. Big serve and big strokes. Who know's how he'll react off his biggest win of his career.

Cheers for that.

Yeah, Becker won the NCAA's last year, although he only played #2 behind Dortsch at Baylor.

Sam is a big, lumbering kid. Last time I saw him was Sacramento Challenger in October. I think he's still getting used to being on the circuit full time. I have to say I was stunned that he beat GGL. Sam does seem to have decent groundies and net work, but he really needs to improve on his movement. His serve is huge, but streaky. But when he gets it going, it is wicked. Okay, I've seen him play about a set and a half total, so what do I know. He just seems very young to me somehow, like he's not quite ready yet. I am the worst tennis scout on the planet, by the way.

I just rang up the tournament number that I used earlier today to get the score on Kendrick's match, except this time I got this dumb automated system with no extensions to the challenger.

Benjamin Becker d. Sam Querrey 6-4 6-2.

Good run for Sam, hopefully Kevin can beat Benjamin and we can see an all American final.
