Marat Safin is a class act

ROHIT BRIJNATH

REUTERS

ALWAYS his matches were an adventure, always he involved you in them in some exquisitely personal way and always he brought promise to the court but never quite fulfilled it. He dropped his shorts at the French Open and you'd find a smile. He sat a bevy of blondes in his box and you'd raise an envious eyebrow. He held tormented conversations with himself on court and you'd be left despairing. He'd construct a backhand of such geometric precision and you'd be enveloped in awe.

But in the end mostly you would shrug, as he did, and hang your head, like he had, somehow bewildered that at the end of these brilliant, expressive, emotional journeys a happy ending eluded him. And us.

But this time was different. This time Marat Safin didn't jilt us. This time he broke racquets, yes, but not his promise, this time he moved us because this man who had lost his way had now found himself. Finally at the Australian Open he was fulfilled, and so were we.

The 2000 US Open win, his first and, inexplicably for his talent, only Grand Slam title, occurred so long ago it seemed unreal. After all, for so long he'd sunk so low, he'd retreated to that desolate place in the mind where victory had become a mirage, he'd allowed his self-belief to drip away till he was just this empty, wounded shell. He had become that worst of things, the almost hero.

You don't need to make this up about Marat Safin, he tells you this himself, for no man is as articulate or honest about his life's journey in the press room.

He says people believed that he was a player who could beat anyone and lose to anyone, and then he began to believe it, too, but who admits that these days. He says his US Open win in 2000 was a "mistake", as if he was all fearless youth unready for this triumph, but who confesses that. He says after defeat in two Australian Open finals he began to feel he would never win another Grand Slam title, but who concedes that.

He was an amusing, sensitive man, but carried with him a terrible burden; his body language spoke not so much of failure but of rich talent defeated by an unsure mind. He was compelling and charismatic. But champion? No.

He should have been. He was the youngest No.1 ever in 2000, he'd toyed with Pete Sampras at the US Open, his game dazzled with its hefty completeness. He was a player with gifts he almost did not comprehend.

So what happened? Perhaps it was new coach Peter Lundgren, and Safin admits: "He makes me believe that I can be a good player and I don't have so much doubts about myself." Perhaps it was a long overdue visit from maturity; perhaps he understood, finally, he could not rewind time, that the calendar was being flipped over but he was standing still.

He still threw racquets, but fewer times, just, you know, to release the suffocating pressure. "Sometimes you feeling like it is really eating inside of you, something, and you have to let it go because you cannot handle the pressure." He still articulated his anguish, like he did in the final, shouting at one point: "What can I do?"

He still made you laugh, replying on being asked whether a key Hewitt double fault in the third set was a beautiful sight: "Just I was praying for that. I needed a present because otherwise, you know, like it's too much. It was such a relief for me."

He still drew you to him, standing so forlorn after the Federer match, that interviewer Jim Courier asked, "Do you want a hug?" and he said "yes" and they embraced.

But all the while his game had an unusual control to it, his mind seemed steadier, his purpose more evident. He'd won two Master Series tournaments as last year folded; last year, too, he'd been to the Open final, but consecutive five-setters against Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick had left him exhausted for Federer in the final. But now he did not dither, refused to let his matches turn into some existential discussion, was never pushed for the first five matches to more than four sets. But it would stop now, surely, in the semis, against Federer, whose courtside chair is the equivalent of Superman's phone booth. When he gets out it, you swear he's wearing a cape.

But Safin's game somewhat, on some surfaces, has the measure of the Swiss, where their paths diverged was confidence. Unlike Roddick, the Russian has a flat backhand down the line that is all elegant havoc; unlike Hewitt, his forehand can bring down small buildings and fashion winners from behind the baseline; unlike Agassi, he is not discomforted at the net; unlike Ferrero, he has a serve with an accompanying sonic boom.

Then, to all this, he brought resolve. He carried it into the final, and when he won he had, in two matches, overcome not just tennis' most gifted player, and also its most pugnacious combatant, he had, more importantly, conquered his demons. In public he had fallen, and now before us he had claimed his redemption.

But there is one last thing, as there always is with Safin. And it is something more than tennis, it is his attractive humanness. This is an emotive man, yet after beating Federer, he does not dance on court, or snarl, or pump fists, but stays at the net, quiet, contained, as if suggesting he has not conquered Federer but merely beaten him this one time.

Later, after the final, too, he is all respectful restraint, and it is a moment of wondrous grace. He has shattered Hewitt and his nation's dream, and as the pieces lie at his feet he feels no need to step on them.

Marat Safin is a class act, and now he is champion, too.

Safin tries to hold serve with emotions, career
By Jill Lieber, USA TODAY (April 2005)

Marat Safin had his defining moment when he was 20. He blasted Pete Sampras in straight sets in the 2000 U.S. Open final, playing what Sampras said was "the tennis of the future."

Marat Safin is maturing and looking to build on his 2005 Australian Open win, his first Grand Slam in more than four years.
By Bernat Armangue, AP

He won his first Grand Slam, reached No. 1 in the world and watched his bank account, international profile, social life and material wealth multiply overnight.

Yet, he asked himself, again and again, is that all there is?

"There was nothing else to achieve," he says. "Still, there was an emptiness in my heart. I had everything, but I had nothing."

Today, at 25 and ranked No. 4, Safin still is struggling to find meaning in his life.

On Jan. 30, after a 4 1/2-year odyssey, he won his second Grand Slam, the 2005 Australian Open. He defeated No. 1 Roger Federer of Switzerland in an epic, five-set semifinal, fighting off a match point and ending Federer's 26-match winning streak. Then he snuffed out Lleyton Hewitt of Australia in the final, thanks in large part to the calming influence of Federer's former coach, Peter Lundgren, now Safin's coach.

But, true to form, it took Safin about three months to win more than two matches in a row in a tournament after that.

Now his friends and family, his coach and the tennis world are waiting to see which Safin will show up at the French Open, a tournament he certainly has the game and desire to win, beginning May 23 at Roland Garros in Paris.

"The criticism is he's inconsistent and has never taken his talent seriously," says Hall of Famer Jim Courier, winner of four Grand Slam titles. "The truth is he's a terrific athlete who can match up with Roger Federer when they're both having their best day on court. That list starts and stops with Marat. But has he put it all together? We're all still waiting to see that happen."

Adds U.S. Davis Cup coach Patrick McEnroe: "Physically, he's so talented. He is intimidating, just by his physique. He's 6-foot-4, with a monster serve and monster return, which makes it tougher. He's been miserable since Australia. With him, it's always a question of how long he can keep his head together."

Federer isn't shaking in his sneakers.

"The last few months, the beginning of this year, it was looking good for him," Federer says. "But he still needs more than that, I think. ... If he can play all the way through an entire year, then I think that's when we're really going to say, 'Gee, Marat has changed.' "

A great show for the fans

Safin is one of the most complicated and compelling athletes in sports.

• He's a passionate, unpredictable perfectionist with a brooding soul.

• He's honest to a fault.

• He breaks rackets when he gets disgusted with himself — more than 300, he estimates, at last count.

• He berates himself in Russian, Spanish or English when he makes stupid mistakes.

• He pretends to cry when he hits balls into the net.

• He even dropped his pants to celebrate a spectacular point at last year's French Open.

Courier, arguably the most introspective player of his era, is, not surprisingly, an unabashed Safin fan.

"Marat's one of the most entertaining characters in tennis in the past 20 years," Courier says. "People miss my generation of players. They felt something with us; they knew something about us. Marat's something to behold. Hopefully, people will feel him, and know him, more."

Safin speaks his mind:

Off the court, Marat Safin turns into an even more open book, spending hours signing autographs for fans and spewing quotes for the media.
Some of his gems:

On his lack of focus - "There are people who give the advice who don't really know what a person feels, what's going on inside of me. Everybody has their own fears, own problems, own complications. Something doesn't just allow you to break through, to make it happen."

On his on-court behavior- "You can't fight your genes. I'm Russian, but I'm 100% Muslim. All the Muslim people are passionate, stubborn. We have hot blood."

On the skepticism about his Australian Open win- "Who (cares) about the world? Who (cares) about the opinion of other people? No offense, but I have enough pride to continue in this way, and I have enough brain to make sure that it doesn't slip away again."
By Jill Lieber

Born in communist Russia, Safin started playing tennis when he was 6. His father, Misha, is a director of a small tennis club in Moscow. His mother, Rausa Islanova, a tennis coach, pushed him and his sister, Dinara Safina, who turned 19 Wednesday and is ranked No. 38 in the world, onto the court. But Safin played for the Spartak Moscow youth soccer team and wanted nothing to do with tennis.

"Maybe I was unhappy, but I had no other choice," he says. "My mother said I would have more chances to become a tennis player than a football player."

He quickly outgrew the substandard facilities and equipment in Moscow. "It was really impossible to break through in Russia. We couldn't buy any balls. We really didn't have any courts, no rackets, nothing. And no people to practice with."

When he was 14, his parents solicited financial backing and sent him to a private tennis school in Valencia, Spain. "It is for the opportunity to do something big," says Safin, who became fluent in Spanish in six months. "Why not do it? Because otherwise you might not have a chance."

Fame comes too quickly

Three years later, in 1997, Safin, then 17, turned pro, and the following year he put himself on the map at the French Open with upsets of Andre Agassi and defending champion Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil. He won his first ATP title in 1999.

During the first 41/2 months of 2000, Safin struggled just to win a match, throwing tantrums and pulverizing rackets at every event. He threatened to quit. Then he turned it around, winning an ATP-leading seven titles, including the U.S. Open.

He led the ATP in singles matches won (73) and finals reached (nine) and was second in singles matches played (100), one behind countryman Yevgeny Kafelnikov. He became the youngest to end No. 2 since 19-year-old Boris Becker in 1986 and the first under 21 to win at least seven titles in a year since Mats Wilander won nine in '83.

Winning the U.S. Open at 20 was the best, and the worst, thing that happened to Safin. "I had money. I had a house in Valencia. I had five cars — one was a Ferrari. What else does a 20-year-old kid need?"

Says his sister: "He wasn't ready. It came so fast. Money came. He didn't realize, and he started to have more fun."

Safin lost his focus and went into a slow fall, burdened by fame, fortune, injuries and a lack of desire. In 2001 he got to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon and the semifinals of the U.S. Open. In 2002 he was runner-up in the Australian Open and a semifinalist in the French but lost in the round of 64 in Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

In 2003, he made headlines at the Australian Open for the three gorgeous blondes in his player's box, then dropped out of sight the rest of the year, plummeting to No. 77, his game and confidence destroyed by a nagging left wrist injury.

"Once you have bad losses, people speak and you listen," he says. "You start to believe that maybe it's who you are. You are a perfectionist, you want to do everything perfect. ... After a while, you don't believe you're good enough."

Safin again threatened to quit. But after much soul-searching, he decided it would be better to face the past — and discard it.

"I had all this stuff," he says. "It wasn't realistic. I'm not a materialistic person. So I sold all my cars. ... I didn't want to regret after my career was over that I didn't really do what I had to do."

Growing into his success

His new, never-say-die attitude was evident at the 2004 Australian Open. Although he lost in the final to Federer, he played 21 hours and 6 minutes in the tournament. His 30 sets were the most in a Grand Slam in the Open era, tying Harold Solomon's mark at Roland Garros in 1976.

Safin jumped from No. 86 to No. 32.

Heartened by his success, he and his management team approached Lundgren about becoming his coach. After seven years with Federer, though, he needed time to chill. Last May, Lundgren signed on.

"It's like a puzzle," Lundgren says. "You start with all of the things you can see that can be better. You can't change everything overnight. It takes time."

When he lost in the first round in the 2004 U.S. Open, Safin again threatened to quit. "He said, 'I can be a top-30 player, but the way I play, I want to do something else,' " Lundgren recalls. "I said, 'Come on, man. Take a few days off before you make a decision like that.' "

Safin then won three ATP titles, including two ATP Masters Series events, and finished in the top four for the third time in five years.

Lundgren has pushed Safin to commit himself to a regimented physical fitness and nutritional program. Safin has hired a chiropractor to travel with him on tour. He'll also travel to Valencia to work with a sports-specific personal trainer.

Lundgren also has gotten Safin to understand he needs to keep his emotions in check. "Before, he would hang his head, bust a racket, throw up his hands, say, 'I can't play, I'm so tired,' " Lundgren says. "Now, he's angry ... it's over. That's important."

Safin's sister says he's so much more focused and aware of his emotions that he took her aside before her match against Maria Sharapova at Indian Wells in March and told her not to get upset.

More important, Lundgren has convinced Safin that if he doesn't try to get the most out of his enormous talent, he'll have major regrets.

Says Safin: "I've let my perfectionism go. I've learned to accept the losses. I've realized I can't waste any moment being unhappy. I want to play tennis until I can't. Why not enjoy it?"

I think it's obviously a good idea for him to skip DC and rest that knee. Of course, I'll miss the opportunity to perve over pics, but if he's well rested and ready to tackle the US hardcourt season, I'd rather see pics of him hoisting some trophies! ;)

BTW, I didn't know where to post this, but....ESPN has started running ads for the US Open Series. Marat is in it with a number of other male and female tennis stars. I've only seen it once today while watching the replay of the Lopez-Hewitt match. So, be on the look-out for it.:yeah:

Seriously, I think official site is becoming ridiculous

30.06.05 There has been some reports in the Russian Press quoting Shamil Tarpischev saying Marat might still play Davis Cup. At the moment Marat is in a place where he has no news, no radio, no tv and very little outside contact and he will be there for ten days more. As that will then make it the 10th July and he will not have practised at all for the last two weeks, it seems highly unlikely that he would risk his knee on such a demanding surface as clay. He may make it to support the team knowing how much he loves to play for Russia.

Ok so this said it has been confirmed that he'll play.
Despite an injured left knee, the recent Australian Open winner will be part of the team. The Russia captain Shamil Tarpishev will also let play Davydenko, semi finalist in RG, Youzhny, 2002 DC hero, Andreev and Gabashvili ranked 207 in the world.

In the French team, Guy Forget called Gasquet, Mathieu, clément and Llodra, after Grosjean pulled out due to tiredness.

Thanks for the translation, Steph :worship:

Irochka, yesterday in the afternoon I have read an article from utro.ru and Tarpishev said he'll play. Where have you read it? Some reliable press or?

So, here is the plan:

Marat has no time, so he'll have surgery on July 7, everybody will think he'll have a rest, but Tarpishev will come and help Marat escape from the hospital. He'll get on the next plane to Moscow and play DC.

At the end everybody will be satisfied - Marat will have a surgery, he will play DC and he'll have a day or two left for fishing

P.S. This sound possible....I'll :timebomb: myself

Hang on everyone - think Shamil Tarpishchev is playing games. Have just been told Marat will have an operation on thursday 7th.
Have got no confirmation if this is just laser surgery which is simpler or a proper "cutting" surgery which would take longer to heal.
I would say that it should be laser surgery.
Think we have to take it that Tarpishchev had to include Marat's name on the slight chance he would be available. He has 3 players in Igor, Misha and Kolya so should be covered.
That is all I have at the moment.

Is there such a thing as reliable press ? :p
I read it on a couple of sites. Anyway Tarpishev said Marat will play IF his knee doesn't get worse. So this is not quite a confirmation.

Safin to lead Russia against France

Australian Open champion Marat Safin will lead Russia in this month's Davis Cup quarter-final tie against France despite a knee injury. "Marat is in the team and should play against the French if, of course, his injury would not get worse than it is right now," said captain Shamil Tarpishchev.

Tarpishchev also named French Open semi-finalist Nikolay Davydenko, 2002 Davis Cup hero Mikhail Youzhny, Igor Andreev and newcomer Teimuraz Gabashvili for the July 15-17 tie on clay at Moscow's Olympic arena.

Safin has been troubled by pain in his left knee in the past two months and even contemplated surgery but then decided to carry on.

Davydenko, who surprised many tennis experts to reach the last four at Roland Garros, has also been suffering from a wrist injury, forcing him to default from his Wimbledon's second round match against Jonas Bjorkman last month.

France captain Guy Forget named French number one Richard Gasquet along with Paul-Henri Mathieu, Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra after Sebastien Grosjean had pulled out because of fatigue.

The Moscow tie will be the first meeting between the two nations since Russia edged France 3-2 to clinch their first Davis Cup title in Paris in 2002 when Youzhny came from two sets down to beat Mathieu in the deciding fifth rubber.

Reuters - 04/07/2005

so the entire team's injured. and they're playing on clay when the whole team's done better on grass this season....be afraid....be VERY afraid

But the connection has been made, and next time we play on hard he'll be invited. :)
I think he has a potential of becoming a strong consistent player. the thing is that injuries had been chasing him all the time and bothered him to play.

News from the official site ...

10.07.05 ... Marat Update
There was a delay in Marat's treatment starting. Under ATP rules all new treatments have to be passed by the Anti-Doping Committee before commencing and his approval was only received on Friday 8th July. Therefore Marat's treatment will now start Monday 11th July 2005 and continue for two weeks. Procedures have to be followed by all under the rules and regulations of the ATP. Any news updates will be posted as and when received.

Aurora

Hmmm, first two weeks of treatment, then back to training and finally matches.
 doesn't seem like there will be much before USO.
But let's take it one step at a time: healing first.

"Patellar Tendinopathy"..., "official site" news!

The correct term for what Marat is being treated for is Patellar Tendinopathy and further details re this condition can be found on the following website here (http://www.physsportsmed.com/issues/2004/0504/depalma.htm)

An idea of the type of treatment that can be followed can be found here (http://bjsm.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/extract/35/5/291)
This does not give the exact treatment - that is determined by Dr Marcacci with whom Marat is currently working but it will give an idea of the type of treatment Marat will be undergoing in the next two weeks.

Safin aiming for US Open after op
Marat Safin should be fit for the US Open after knee surgery, according to Russia's Davis Cup captain.

The Australian Open champion underwent a small operation this week in Italy to repair a ligament tear.

Shamil Tarpshchev said: "marat has already begun a rehabilitation process and should be reasdy to resume playing before the start of the US Open."

The injury means Safin misses this week's Davis Cup quarter-final between Russia and France in Moscow.

news from the official site www.maratsafin.com

14.07.05 Marat Update
Marat was in quite a lot of pain after the treatment on Monday but since then he feels much better. He works in the gym daily to strengthen his knee. In fact Marat felt so much better he wanted to fly to Moscow to be with the team as support for Davis Cup but the doctor would not permit it. If he continues to improve Marat should be okay to start practising tennis in 10 days time.

14.07.05
As a little extra Marat sent a small electronic Ferrari from Italy to Tom son of manager Amit Naor for his 1st birthday.

News from official site:
14.07.05 Please note there have been a few reports stating that Marat will be fit for the US Open and incorrectly giving the impression that Marat will not play in the 2 Masters Series. We would like to stress that Marat will play in Montreal and Cincinnati before the US Open. This is the reason why he elected to have treatment for his knee in July to ensure he was fit to play.

Safin jugará dos torneos antes del US Open

15-07 | 15:42 hs.

Did it a few weeks back with my nephew too and he is only 2, i just used my mom's playing cards to teach him numbers, sometimes he would sit through the whole deck of cards, other times he would get bored after 2 cards lol but between me and mom he could repeat 1-9 by the time he left :) maybe i'll work on his ABCs at christmas lol :p

14/07/05 - SAFIN GUEST OF THE ISOKINETIC

In recent years the Isokinetic has become the leading centre mainly credited with the recovery of injured players with particular reference to soccer. This absolutely deserved reputation, has seen them restore athletes of the caliber of Baggio and Signori to you (there are many more but we cite just some), and this reputation has even reached Russia.

In fact, from the beginning of the week, Marat Safin has chosen the Bologna centre in order to recover from tendinopathy to the knee. For those who do not follow tennis, it is right to emphasize that the popular Moscovite is currently the n°5 in the world of this sport and that in 2005 alone he has won at the Australian Open, and recently reached the third round of Wimbledon.

During the 7 years of his professional career Marat Safin has won 15 ATP titles including the US Open and as such is considered to have been judged a top player.

Therefore it is obvious that his arrival under the Two Towers has not gone unnoticed and it is he who explains why he has chosen Bologna and the Isokinetic. I have had problems for two months, but I have tried to continue my playing activity. But the problem increased and I therefore went to Belgium to see Professor Maertens (the same one that operated on the Marchionni of Parma) and the Professor recommended Doctor Marcacci, and he in turn recommended the Isokinetic.

Here he was put in the care of Dr. Gianni Nanni and entrusted to the cures of Antonio. They are all good persons - emphasized Safin speaking in Italian - and I find myself very well.

Between an ice cream and all the other (a sympathetic initiative from the director Mark Zanbbi and his staff for the good will of the patients and something that Safin appreciates a lot) is just one of the therapies to follow. In the morning I go to the swimming pool and in the afternoon I jog in the arena. For now it is estimated to last two weeks, and then we will see. Also it is necessary to complete this to go across the ocean for the US Open which is getting closer and closer. I want to start again with going to Montreal or at the very least to Cincinnati. He enjoys Bologna but has seen little apart from one previous vacation in Rome. Of the city I have only seen the roads on the way from the hotel (that for reasons of privacy we do not name, apart from saying that it is in the centre) to the Isokinetic.

It seems to me to be a beautiful place. I do not have any intention of going to Rimini (where several tennis colleagues are involved in a Challenger Series) but I would definitely want to make one vacation without tennis to Marine Milan . Dreams are all quite real for a young person of 25 years but he jokes that he is getting old as a professional tennis player - I am too old for the Davis Cup! At least in his opinion, one of the reasons why he is not appearing in the match against France on clay in Moscow. As a quality player we have only Davydenko, it will be hard.

Marat speaks Italian  I'm sure he understands, since it is very close to Spanish, but speaking......he is a quick learner :yeah:

little :topic: I agree that Spanish and Italian are not 100 % interexchangeable :) I speak some Italian and I understand spanish (not everything, mind you, just the topic of discussion :p ) and that led me to the conclusion that it must be true vice versa as well :D

The real conclusion is that Marat is very smart

yesterday i read a little interview of marat on italian journal, because as you know,he is in bologna for treatment on his knee..he said he feels day by day better with treatment, and his life is still from hotel to gymn house and then again relax on hotel..and he has not time to enjoy, only one evening he went to disco at milano marittima(a really funny place for summer near bologna),i think the same disco i was one time because every vip usually go there..but i couldn' be there the same evening, that's a pity.however he said he will come back for 2 master series, and his target for the rest of the year is to come back within number 3 in the world and be healthy...good luck marat!!i wish he can come back number one!!!

This is from the us Open website as to why marat was given the nickname he has!!
Marat Safin
THE LOWDOWN: With an explosive inner fire, “Mr. Unpredictable” is capable of blazing his way through any draw—or going up in flames... Safin is particularly lethal on hard courts, winning the ’00 US Open and this year’s Aussie Open… Barring a major meltdown, he figures as a US Open Series favorite.

It´s not so easy to understand italian if you know spanish..., maybe a couple of words. I guess that Marat is working all day with "Antonio" and he is very bored.... You know, "How do I say ...... in Italian??? I can imagine Marat asking that  "They are all good persons and I find myself very well." is not a very difficult phrase ;) and it´s the kind of phrase he could say to any Italian that asks for his health

Marat is Hippo. If the press is to shy to call him that, it doesn't change anything.

Poor Marat though.

Marat has the weirdest ideas abt age and family and life in general. Very fatalistic.
I don't think he's that fluent in italian, tho learning italian is pretty easy if u know one other latin language and are constantly surrounded by ppl who speak italian too. E puoi, credo che l'italiano e piu facile d'imparare che "l'espangol". :p

I translated this German interview with Marat from the adidas site into English for you guys.

What do you still want to achieve in your life – in sport and also elsewhere?

My biggest goal is to fight for number 1, again. In Australia I proved that i can also be successfull at the big events and that im ready for every sitatuion. I still have to work to bring that performance constantly, to play those matches I played against Roger. Grand Slams always have priority, of course. But my biggest dream is to win the French Open – I love Paris and also the french fans. Sport is simply my life. I want to represent my Sport in a good way, on and off the court. Apart from that I will most probably always be an ambitious person and after my tennis career i will search for new challenges. For the time beeing i will only concentrate on the sport most of all.

What is unique on Russia, what do you like the most on your homecountry?

What I like the most on Russia? The incomparable feeling to come back home and hear my language, meet my friends, and the feeling that the people understand my culture. I`m always on the road. But no matter where I go, Russia will always be my home.

How do you consider Dinara – as your little sister, who also plays tennis or as tennis profi? Do you train together or play against each other? And who wins?

For me she is most of all one: My little sister, whom I will always support with all my Love, no matter what she does. That she also plays tennis provides for a common interest of course and from time to time we see each other not only at home but also during tourneys.

Your favorit artist is Robert de Niro. Which Robert de Niro do you prefer - the one in “Taxi Driver”, the one in “Der Pate”, or the one in “Meine Braut, ihr Vater und ich”?

The great thing about him is that he can play any role – funny, serious or bad – he is always convincing. If I would absolutly have to choose one, I would choose “Der Pate”, but all movies with him are amazing.
