Peter Lundgren

His coach Peter Lundgren, who oversaw Federer's Grand Slam breakthrough in 2003, has no doubts and believes there is a good reason for the Russian's slump.

"After Australia, Marat was without doubt tired mentally," Lundgren told the French L'Equipe sports magazine.

"Since we have been together, he has worked really hard and since last autumn he has given a lot on the courts. He won tournaments in Beijing, Madrid and Paris and was in the semi-finals of the Masters Cup in Houston.

"He was the man to beat last winter. He was concentrated, he didn't show emotions and played well.

"Now we need to find that spirit, it will be difficult. But I believe Marat will be ready for Roland Garros."

Safin desperate for French Title (BBC)

Safin has struggled since January's Australian Open win
Marat Safin insisted winning the French Open remains his career goal as he tries to resurrect a lacklustre season.
The Russian won his second career Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January but has failed to get beyond the third round of any event since.

"My goal is the French Open," he said. "That's my goal for all of my career.

"I am trying to win it. I have always played well there but for some reason it just hasn't worked out. I was always missing something extra."

Safin, 25, made the semi-finals in Paris in 2002 and was a quarter-finalist in 2000.

Last year, he made it to the fourth round but was hampered by blisters on both hands.

"I am going to prepare myself as much as I can for the tournament," he said.

"I like the Paris atmosphere, the city, the people, the courts, all these things make it very special. It is the perfect tournament."

The former world number one insisted he was not frustrated by his failure to press Roger Federer harder for the top spot.

"I'm not frustrated at all. I can be upset with myself for many other reasons than to challenge Federer. It's not my goal to challenge anybody," he said.

"I am trying to be as happy as I can, to try and play as well as I can and to be as consistent as I can.

"If that helps me compete with him for the number one spot, then that's great. But if I am not able to do that, then I am also happy.

"This is not my first year on the tour, I have been playing for seven years and have achieved quite a lot. So to be upset that I am not challenging Federer, it's just stupid."

They do Stade 2 live during RG, and last year they welcomed Federer at their table during the doubles on center court (Noah, Vilas, etc...). I was sitting just 4 or 5 meters down the tour where they do the show... i had no idea Roger was up there :p but even during the show they don't show images, you just hear the crowd cheering/laughing/booing etc

Whilst loitering in the newsagent today I flicked through Inside Sport (Aus edition)... in the index was an article "Game, Set, Choke" ... I thought, hahaha, Saf has to get at least a mention  ... anyway I didn't buy the mag, as it only had three paragraphs about Marat and a couple of AO pics that we've all already seen 450,000 times ... but they did say that Safin manages to be a choker, a tanker, and an exploder  .... oh and somewhere in the mix, also a champion. :yeah:

So, ladies & gentlemen ... the bonus question for the car, cash and dinner date with a mad russian who sometimes plays tennis is ... (drum roll) .... which one will turn up at RG???

This was published in a chilean newspaper. I'm sorry for my translation:

Marat Safin: " Federer is the best player of all the times "

When Marat Safin speaks, the press rubs the hands. The russian, ex-number one of the world, and current champion of the Australia Open has so much power on the court as sharp and sincere the tongue. He doesn't elude any topic, and loves the forcefulness: " In my opinion, Federer is the best player of all the times ".

Safin is, to his 25 years old, almost come back of everything. He shoots with thick ammunition against the ATP - " they all know that the doping subject in tennis is pure political " - and he satirizes about Andre Agassi: " I've been seven years in the tennis, and I'm not going to be 20 years as Agassi, definitively. There are many other things that to do in the life ".

The russian, who jumped to the fame winning the USO in 2000, analyzed during an interview the current situation of the tennis and his own possibilities to face to the French Open, which begins on Monday.

" I think when I play badly, I play really badly. If I'm a perfectionist? Probably, in some sense. The clay isn't my better surface, but with a good draw I have a chance of winning in Roland Garros ", he assures.

The first missile

And then he take to advantage of to throw the first "missile". " We come near to Roland Garros with too many tournaments, and it is difficult to obtain the extra motivation that we need to play five sets match ".

" Rafter, Mantilla, Ivanisevic, Agassi, Ferrero, Coria, Haas ... how many people got hurt in the last years? We play too much, eleven months a year with only one month to rest. My ideal calendar would be three months without tournaments, dedicating in them one month and a half to the preparation ", he continues.

" There is no possibility of being 'hungry' for the victory! This it is the reason for which many people leaves the tennis ".

As the American Martina Navratilova, Safin also considers as "ridiculous" the money that is earned in many tennis tournaments, and proposes to erase of the map the smallest.

" This year the Scottsdale champion earned 40.000 dollars, and the one of the golf tournament, which was disputed the same week, 400.000. It's ridiculous! I'm sorry, but this type of tournaments can't exist ".

Doping

He doesn't say anything with clarity, but his ironic smile is clear when, in view of a question on doping in the tennis, he speak about the sports achievements in the Tour de France: " Can you do 200 kilometres daily to this pace and for 21 days? What they do it's incredible ".

" Of course, I have to take vitamins, because if not, at the end of the season I'm dead. They all know that the the doping subject in the tennis is pure political. To Stefan Koubek they could destroy the career ", he says, remembering the polemic sanction for three months of the Austrian tennis player.

With so many clarity of ideas, it doesn't to him consider to direct the ATP, for which is looking for a new chief ?

Safin offers with the most ironic and scornful generosity of his smiles: " ATP's CEO? No, I have better things to do ".

Beyond his hopes to do something, his forecast for Roland Garros is clear: " The Argentinians and Spanish are favorite ".

Richard Gasquet?. Safin laughs. Roger Federer? " It is difficult, but, in my opinion, Federer is the best player of all the times. With all respect to Sampras, he had his weak points. Federer has more talent and positive aspects that the whole rest of the players of the circuit added. And I'm not so sure that he needs a coach. On the other hand, yes, I need it ".

Maybe you could understand it better in Spanish :p

Q. Is it something special to come back in Roland Garros? We know that you love Bercy, but you love Roland Garros as well. Is it a special feeling to be back on these courts? >

MARAT SAFIN: I think I'm not the only one who has these special feelings. Also for a lot of players, that they grow up on clay ‑ the Spanish, the Argentinians, the French. For them it's the biggest thing probably of the year.

So for me it is a really big thing.

Q. Have you got mixed feelings about your match today?

MARAT SAFIN: What do you mean?

Q. I mean, are you very happy or very frustrated? Is it difficult?

MARAT SAFIN: No, I'm just really happy that I pass the first round. It's really important for every player. To pass through, it's a tough match. First round is always tough because you have to get used to the courts, to the balls. You are nervous because you want to do well in the tournament. You know that you going to win, but still, you know, you don't want to have a surprise.

It doesn't matter how the way you playing. It's the fact that you passed. And, really, I think I really felt good on the court, even though that I lost the second set. I can't complain. I've been playing quite decent tennis, especially, you know, coming after not so many matches winning on clay. So it was pretty good.

Q. Is the fact that Sluiter has got a two‑handed backhand and two‑handed forehand make the game more difficult?

MARAT SAFIN: Well, we play together actually a few times, you know, even when ‑‑ in satellites. I know him really well, he knows me really well. There is nothing surprising for me in his game. He's pretty solid from both sites, doesn't make any mistakes, he doesn't have any weaknesses, like complete holes. He's a pretty good player, pretty solid. You have to work every single point because he can be dangerous, especially on fast clay.

Q. After the Australian Open, I don't think you reached the quarterfinals of a tournament. Was that a concern coming into this? Can you just put that to the back of your mind because it's Roland Garros?>

MARAT SAFIN: Again?

Q. After you won the Australian Open, you haven't reached the quarterfinals anywhere. Is that a concern?

MARAT SAFIN: It doesn't really matter because when you play in a big tournament, you don't want to really think what you did before, because it's completely different tennis, completely different game. Because it's five‑set matches, it's pretty good courts, compared to ‑ with all respect to other tournaments ‑ they're not in such great shape. So for a lot of players, they're not playing like on the baseline, especially like Henman, Agassi, the guys who are playing, trying to go inside the court, play fast, who are playing flat. It's a little bit complicated.

Especially for me also, I found myself a little bit that it's really difficult to change the game, and try to play a little bit from the baseline, go more a little back. It's not so effective.

Q. You must be very happy the way you closed out the match. Two breaks of serve, 40‑Love, 40‑15 on yours. >

MARAT SAFIN: It was okay. Nothing to complain.

Q. If you look at everywhere but Wimbledon, which is the Grand Slam you think your game is best for? US Open? French Open? Australian Open? >

MARAT SAFIN: You said, except Wimbledon.

Q. All the same pretty much?

MARAT SAFIN: Yeah. I think if it's not really fast and the bounce really low, I think I can play on all of them. But the Wimbledon's a little bit too fast and too low for me. It's difficult to find my game for it. My game doesn't fit (smiling).

Q. Of all the Roland Garros's, which is the most disappointing for you?

MARAT SAFIN: Actually two years. In 2000, I was playing really good, and unfortunately I run out of gas. I played a lot of matches. Just I was exhausted. I just reached the quarterfinals. I lost to Magnus Norman, who was playing quite great tennis.

And I think the year that I missed ‑‑ that I made the semifinal against Ferrero, I think it was really big disappointment in my career because the way I played. I reached the semifinals, I was playing well. For some reason, I just ‑‑ I almost give up the semifinal. I should have stayed there. I should have try something different, but I couldn't. I couldn't find the weapons.

Q. Is your knee okay? Physically you're fine now?

MARAT SAFIN: Yeah. A little bit ‑‑ my knee a little bit hurts sometimes, you know, if I spend a lot of time on the court. After a while, it's starting to bother me. But I have a doctor, he's taking care of me. Hopefully I will survive until the second week.

Q. Last year you had a difficult match against Starace, then the blisters with Nalbandian. How frustrating was that last year?

MARAT SAFIN: Of course, it's sad. Basically almost retired, you know. Against Nalbandian, after the first set, I really realized I have no ‑‑ I don't really have a chance, even though if I will win that match, the other match, I will not be able to play even. It was really hurting me. And the way I played, I was not so happy with my game. I don't think I would have done anything special last year.

Q. You said before you did not know why the blisters came on your hands last year. Now that you're back here, you don't think back and try to figure out some reason? >

MARAT SAFIN: I'm really scared about it actually. I'm really scared because I don't know what happened, and it can come out any moment. Just have to really be careful with that because I really want to do well here. And I have no idea why they came out.

Q. Do you think there's more chance it could happen again here?

MARAT SAFIN: I'm praying for that not to happen.

"I'm scared, actually," said Safin, who could have been talking about his out-of-control mop but was actually fearing the return of hand blisters that caused his exit at Roland Garros last year. "I have no idea where they came from. I am praying they will not come back again." We're praying you find a barber..." :haha: :haha: :haha:

Roger Federer beats Marat Safin in tough tennis final at Halle

Roy Kammerer
Canadian Press

Sunday, June 12, 2005

HALLE, Germany (AP) - Roger Federer figured Sunday's final against Australian Open champion Marat Safin would be a lot easier than it turned out to be.

Safin makes no secret of his dislike for grass courts, where he has recorded some terrible results, but he surprised the top-ranked Swiss with one of his best matches ever on the surface in a 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-4 loss at the Gerry Weber Open.

"It was difficult, tougher than I thought against Marat on grass, which isn't exactly his favourite surface," Federer said. "But I feel great, it's exactly how I want to feel heading into Wimbledon."

Federer, who also won the last two tournaments at Halle, captured his 20th straight ATP final and 29th straight match on grass. He will be looking for his third straight title at Wimbledon, which starts June 20.

Sunday's win, which was worth $116,000 US, was his 29th career title.

"My 29th title and my 29th win on grass - that fits perfectly," Federer said. "It's a shame I don't get a chance to celebrate, but everything has to take a back seat to tennis."

The two players traded early breaks in the first set, the only time the second-seeded Russian would accomplish that against Federer. Then Safin threw away the set at 5-4 with two forehands that sailed long.

Federer jumped for joy at the end of the two-hour match against Safin, who repeatedly slammed his racket and screamed at the referee as he wasted several chances to break Federer's serve.

"But it was still a great match," Safin said. "I don't know the last time I played such great tennis. It was probably my best match ever on grass."

Each time the fifth-ranked Russian had a chance to break serve on the fast grass court, Federer responded with a hard serve or volley in a match that had 10,000 spectators cheering on a centre court built to be an exact replica of Wimbledon.

The Swiss star's last loss on grass was in June 2002 against Mario Ancic of Croatia in the first round at Wimbledon. Sweden's Bjorn Borg holds the record for consecutive grass wins in the Open era with 41.

Federer's finals streak started in Vienna in 2003, and his record this year is 51-3.

The 6-foot-4 Safin said it's a disadvantage to play on grass being so tall. The two-time Grand Slam winner, who also owns the 2000 U.S. Open title, reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2001, but hasn't lasted beyond the second round in four other appearances.

"I hope to do well at Wimbledon," Safin said. "I played the best player in the world and I came close to beating him. You have to believe in yourself on grass."

The Russian had never reached a grass final before.

Safin, who will see a doctor Monday about a left knee injury that has plagued him for two months, said he is considering skipping Russia's next Davis Cup tie, which starts two weeks after Wimbledon.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :hysteric: :crying2: :sobbing: :tears:  :crying2: :sobbing: :tears:  :crying2: :sobbing: :tears:

Agreed completely. Not sure abt addiction, the situation's not that bad, I don't think, but the decision to skip the tie is a good one. No one will sacrifice a singles career for the DC (save for Lleyton, perhaps) and that's how it should be.

Safin happy about form for Wimbledon

Marat Safin is in confident mood about his Wimbledon prospects having reached his first grass court final in Germany last week. The Australian Open champion, who lost the Halle final to two-times SW19 winner Roger Federer on Sunday, said the match had been his best performance on grass.

Federer claims third successive Halle title

"I'm more satisfied with my game than I was four years ago when I played in the quarter-finals against [Goran] Ivanisevic and now I'm playing much, much better," Safin said afterwards.

"I hope I will have enough confidence coming into Wimbledon and be able to continue playing such a high level of tennis. Then I think I will have a chance to do well there."

Federer said Safin's performance suggested the twice-major champion could be a major threat at the All England Club when the tournament begins next Monday.

"His chances are better than the last few years but it depends how he gets his act together," Federer said.

"I reckon he's going to fancy his chances more of doing well. He hasn't really shown how good he is on grass except maybe this week."

Safin was scheduled to travel to Milan on Monday to consult a doctor about a troublesome knee injury.

"There's not much you can do. There is no treatment for that. It won't get worse and it won't get better," the 25-year-old Russian said, adding that he planned to take four weeks off after Wimbledon to rest before the U.S. hard-court season.

"If I don't take care of my knee I won't manage to play on the hard surfaces."

Safin's coach Peter Lundgren, who previously worked with Federer, said the Russian had a chance of winning the title at the All England Club.

"It depends on the draw, how he feels in his leg and everything but the way he is playing he's got a good chance," Lundgren said.

14.06.05 Marat News

Yesterday Marat saw Mr Markazi in Bologna a specialist regarding his knee.

Marat has a small cut or fracture in the ligament in his left knee. It is ok to play on grass so he will definitely be at Wimbledon and will also play at Boodles this weekend.

After Wimbledon Marat will go to Bologna to have a small operation on his knee which will probably take about 2-3 weeks for recovery. This is to ensure that he will be fit and well for the summer season on hardcourts in the US. There is a possibility that he will not be able to play in the Davis Cup 1/4s in July.

Thanks for posting the update here Irochka. Well, you know how guys are, he didn't wanna deal with it and preferred to wait for months. As most men he probably doesn't like docs. I also don't. :(
But now this should be a relief and a good decision. :D

LOL
I don't think that he would have agreed to stop playing for 3 weeks anytime before RG/ Wimbledon and risked his performance there. THe time he chose for the operation seems optimum to me.
Btw. I REALLY doubt that he didn't see a doctor before. It sounds somewhat crazy if a sportsman (who had been out with a serious injury before) doesn't go to a doc if he feels a discomfort somewhere. Players go to doctors with every minor thing at tourneys.

I have no doubt he saw some doctors. But those doctors don't seem to be good enough to find the cause of inflammation and advise surgery.

Exactly Irochka. The tournament docs are not specialists in all the fields.

Thanks for the news, Irochka!

"small cut or fracture in the ligament" - wasn't it the same thing that started 2003 misery? Or am I just being paranoid about injuries and surgeries?

Sounds alright. :) If it's something the doctors can fix, why not? Hopefully afterwards he won't have anymore pain.

thanks for the news.
I`m really happy it can be done and I hope it will be okay then and the operation will go okay. I`m surprised Marat agreed with the operation actually. Anyway its good he can play Wimbledon and then take a short break and come back for the hardcourt season :) thats a good timing.
