article in Spanish posted in Safinator:
Briefly Peter said the injury is better, not inflammed but he has still pain sometimes (when the weather changes suddenly for example) but anyway they are fighting to arrive to AOpen, no one is sure...He has finally touched the racket but "barely" he said!!!! "apenas"....
So maybe i was wrong and we have still a small chance!!
the bad thing is to know he has still some pain sometimes...

"No podemos precipitarnos.

Yup:

"INJURIES are threatening to bite heavily into the list of summer tennis drawcards, with Andre Agassi considered increasingly unlikely to contest the Australian Open, and Marat Safin's sister, Dinara Safina, adding to the growing pessimism over the champion's ability to mount a title defence.

"He is still injured with his knee, so I hope it will get better, but I think the chances are really small that he's coming," Safina, the world No.20, said before her quarter-final match at the Australian Women's Hardcourts on the Gold Coast. "But I hope (so). I'll miss him." "

I agree. It's always sad when a defending champion isn't there, but it's worse when they crash out in the opening round - like Anastasia and Sveta last year.

I really don't want to see him rush his comeback.

On a lighter note, I suppose this means that there will be no rush for him to have the MopTop cut off! ;)

If this knee problem is not fixed in 5 months time, it's gotta be one hell of a problem. Something that requires surgery, for instance.

:awww: AO will be pretty much ruined for me (on the men's side anyway) if Marat doesn't play but at the same time I only want to see him on court when he is 'fully' recovered.

Marat took only a 3 day break in Moscow for New Year and then returned to Valencia to continue practice. Peter has joined him and they are working together. He is now practising his tennis and feels good. It is already 4 weeks that he has been working on his fitness and it is coming along fine but it must be remembered that it is a long road back after such a long injury and Marat does not want to rush it. Because of the length of time he has been unable to actually do anything strenuous with his knee, he really lost a lot of muscle strength around the knee and it is vital that this is fully built up again before going back to playing matches.
It is a time race to be ready in time for the Australian Open and Marat is trying everything in his power to be there. He has been in talks with both his main sponsors Head and Adidas and they are in agreement that Marat should not force the issue and should he feel just before the Australian Open that he is not ready, they will abide by his decision. The thing to remember is that he is going to very hot temperatures and also to 5 set matches so Marat and Peter have to be happy that the knee will hold and Marat can fully defend his title. He has been working with the new Head racquet and is happy with his progress.
Marat knows he is in a time race and he is doing everything in his power to be there so do not stop believing - maybe the time has come for a miracle!"

That's my take on it too ... he will 'defend' his title by being in the draw and making his way through the rounds ... they can't seriously expect him to make it to the Final though, can they?

I didn't find anything strange in that little news snippet at all ... with the exception of the 'miracle' crap at the end. What Marat needs is time, patience, excellent guidance and a positive attitude. The pressure & frustration he must be feeling from fans, sponsors, management, tournament directors, but most of all, from himself, must be immense. And the temptation to come back too soon would be overwhelming.

I get the feeling that up until recently Marat & Co had every intention of going to AO, but the knee just isn't quite ready  ... and a bloody big :yeah: to them for making such a brave decision (if that's what they end up doing!). Once it was Tarpi and Marat's website having different point of views on the DC tie (i don't even remember who said what :p), then it was Dinara saying, during the Fed Cup final, that it was likely that Marat would not play before January while his official website still let us hop he'd be ready for Shanghai...

OK chicas, I'm back for a moment. Here the Eurosport article quote from Paul McNamee. I incline to believe him.
The reigning Australian Open men's champion Marat Safin is in serious doubt because of a long-term knee injury, French Open champion Rafael Nadal is in danger because of a foot problem and former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova is in jeopardy because of a shoulder complaint.

Australian Open tournament director Paul McNamee told reporters in Perth it was unlikely any of them would make it to Melbourne Park when the tournament starts on January 16.

"I'm sure by Monday or Tuesday there'll be a lot of information, because if you're not on a plane by Monday I don't think you're playing," he said.

/.../
Safin, who beat world number one Roger Federer in an epic semi-final last year before downing Australia's Lleyton Hewitt in the final, is unlikely to defend his title.

The big Russian has been sidelined since last year and recently pulled out of the Hopman Cup in Perth while his compatriot Sharapova withdrew from the Australian women's hardcourt championships because of her own ongoing injury problems.

"There's no word on Marat Safin, but I have significant doubts (he will play). I'd say he's definitely in doubt, but there's no word yet," McNamee said.

And here the link if you wanna be convinced yourself.
http://www.eurosport.com/home/pages/v4/l0/s57/e11348/sport_lng0_spo57_evt11348_sto809411.shtml

So we'll have the answer on Monday anyway.

My opinion: official site never will say anything till the last moment as "official withdrew"....we have to listen dinara's word because she is very close to Marat and we have to "hear" Marat's words: if he said last days of december that he has still pain and he "hopes" to touch a racket soon and he has so much mails to run yet...if we can listen him carefully we could suppose he is not ready to play Aussi Open...and be patient and wait until he is better...that's all

Hi Maria :wavey:
I'm not too sure what you're asking , but here goes ...

instead of saying "have to be happy" they could've said:
Marat and Peter need to feel confident that the knee ...

with regards to using the two together - it's quite common to say "you have to be happy that ..." - it basically means - before you make a decision you must be sure/confident about ... so they could've said this:
... Marat and Peter must be sure about his knee so he can fully defend his title.

I hope this helps ... my brain is a bit fried at the moment as I've just come back from Russia V Serbia (actually the mixed doubles is still on, but I've had enough) ... the Serbian crowd were incredibly rowdy and my head is thumping!

Lundgren said that decision re AO will be made by Jan 9. He came to Valencia to see Marat's condition and make final decision. He said that the knee is much better, Marat can run without problems. Marat will play only if he's 100%. He also said it's very hard for Marat not to play for so long, but he (Peter) will do everything to help him cope with this situation.

I know it's kind of selfish of me, but I hope something fierse Marat would play. He shouldn't rush, he should take care of that damned knee, he ain't so young anymore blah blah blah, but I miss him so fucking much! I watch tennis and it just isn't the same without him, not the same at all, the AO more than any other tourney. AO is HIS tourney! Please, let the knee be good!

My opinion: official site never will say anything till the last moment as "official withdrew"....we have to listen dinara's word because she is very close to Marat and we have to "hear" Marat's words: if he said last days of december that he has still pain and he "hopes" to touch a racket soon and he has so much mails to run yet...if we can listen him carefully we could suppose he is not ready to play Aussi Open...and be patient and wait until he is better...that's all
I understand the official site waits the last moment to say if he withdraws, that's normal. Dinara didn't say he withdrew for the AMC if i remeber well, she said he was very unlikely to play for the rest of 2005.
And sure Dinara is reliable, she's his sister after all. But so should be the official website. Webby is supposed to to have contact with Marat team, so she should be a reliable source as well. Hence why it's not logical that at any given time we have contradictory info coming from Dina and Marat's official site. What's the use of an official site if it's not able to give info that comes from the man himself? :retard: It doesn't change much from a fansite or a public forum like here where all we do is speculating.

Thanks Iroshka  :D

I'm hoping Marat can have a healthy 2006 season. :) :tennis: But I have my doubts. I only hope he can play all 4 grand slams and help Russia in the Davis Cup. I think not having a healthy Safin last year was the difference in Russia not winning the 2005 Davis Cup. :(

I think maybe he will be in Valencia for next 3 months starting slowly his practice and then he will come back in April for clay season (for which Valencia practice is very good). And clay is the best surface for his knee. I think this is the plan and i think it is wise. My opinion and my thought.

Vass: does you agree with me about clay season??? i posted here what i quoted above several weeks ago...i also discussed this in my board (http://bmaratsafinarttennis.runboard.com, Marat Safin, Tennis & Art) on a special thread i opened there , and my friend angela agree with me, she also added that MIami and Wells are not his best tournaments, so he should skip them and go directly to the clay season...
today i read you posted same thing on Safinator...i remark this because when i posted the thing here no one agree with me...on the contrary, people thought i was negative...

Marat is STILL in valencia?!!?!? :speakles:

If he's not ready, he's not ready i dont see how a couple of days are going to make a significant enough difference in his condition and the fact that they're leaving this until the very last minute doesnt exactly fill me with confidence in him even if he does play especially since he's going to have to play his best tennis though best of 5 matches, in the insane conditions in Australia straight off the plane from Europe(:retard: ) where is like minus degrees and where he's presumably training...indoors :help:

Id rather not see marat in australia at all than see him suffer there :awww:

Now Peter says the decision will be made on 12 Jan.

Australian Open".

if you continuign reading the article in Russian, there is a phrase in which it is said that sponsors received the advise that he maybe will not play. This article in Russian you psoted is the same is posted in the official site, right? the one in which Peter says he is satisfied with Marat's condition now and the decision will be made on Thursday 12. After that there is the phrase about the soponsors.

this is the complete translation made by online translator

However, the main event of this week in the world
tennis for Russia must occur until January 12. To this day the solution about his participation into Australian Open of signs the acting champion is Russian Marat [Safin]. “I be situated together with Marat in Valencia already several days - and it is contented by his form, reported ASI “entire sport” the trainer of Russian Peter [Lundgren]. ? He appears cheerful, himself he feels well and very actively it is trained. But final decision about Australian Open is not thus far made. I want to [ponablyudat] still several days, as Marat he feels itself on Kort. Until Thursday there is time in order to weigh everything pro and con - and to make a final decision about the participation or the nonparticipation into Australian Open”.

Let us recall that [Safin], until now, finally was not restored after the severe injury of elbow which it broke to it entire past season. Marat already agreed with his personal sponsors that they would be ready to his possible failure of the protection of title on the open championship of Australia. By the way, until now, unclearly, will be able to participate in the tournament the last year's champion it is sulfurred Williams, who also finally was not restored after an entire series of injuries.

"Russian Safin is said to be devastated at his struggle to be fit to defend the centenary Open title he wrestled Lleyton Hewitt for last year after being sidelined for virtually six months with knee soreness.

Nothing new but...

From the courrier mail
Safin is poised to become the first defending champion since Andre Agassi (wrist) in 2002 to be unable to defend the Australian Open.

Because of severe knee pain, the Russian has not played since reaching the Cincinnati quarter-finals in August.

The baseliner spent three days in Moscow over the New Year break before returning to Valencia in Spain to work with his Swedish coach Peter Lundgren.

The muscles around Safin's knee have wasted because he has not been able practise at full intensity.

Last year the Russian was determined to avoid surgery. Now he may have no option.

McNamee said Safin's agent Gerard Tsobarian had contacted him to say "Marat, unfortunately, was very doubtful".

"We're likely to learn definitely tomorrow morning," McNamee said. "It's not dead, but it's not looking good."
