Safin has knee surgery
7/20/2005 9:45:18 AM

MOSCOW (AP) - Russia's Marat Safin had surgery on the torn knee ligament that forced him to miss last week's Davis Cup quarter-final win over France. He is expected to resume training in about two weeks.
Shamil Tarpishchev, the head of Russia's tennis federation, said Safin had the operation last week, RIA-Novosti news agency reported Wednesday.

- from Tennis-X.com:
Marat Safin's manager Gerard Tsobanian says the Russian has not had knee surgery: "Marat has not had, and is not getting, left knee surgery. Rather, he is getting a treatment that will hopefully put him back on court without having to go through surgery."

Don't you just love them? :p

Just terms surgery/treatment misunderstanding. Tarpishev added "these shots are considered as surgery".

btw on official site they used term "treatment" not surgery.

It could be injections or smth like that. That would explain why they needed approval of ATP antidoping  Tarpishev mentioned shots/injections.

Probably Irina.

Anyway, Tennis-X noticed too that Tarpi was contradicting Gerard, and i like the comment they made on it:

Shamil Tarpishchev, the head of Russia's tennis federation, is now saying Marat Safin had knee surgery last week, this after his agent said he didn't. Who cares, just start rehabbing so someone can challenge Roger Federer

Well, according to russian news Shamil said that Marat didn't have surgery, he had shots in the knee. Bad translation from russian ?

По словам Тарпищева, хотя Сафину и не сделали операцию, но его многострадальное колено буквально искололи медикаментами.

http://www.maratsafin.com/content.php?did=10&aid=121d73cbad3a7eca3bce671cd0943458

Now following on with that it would appear that Marat is indeed undergoing treatment and not had surgery. So how did the "surgery" come into it. Maybe a wrong translation given all the various languages involved. Or another thought as Marat does not like needles and this is obviously a very deep injection - a local anesthetic was administered before the injection. If this is what happened then it would explain the pain Marat had to start with immediately after the injection and then the pain eased.

So to put it in simple terms a substance has been injected into the affected ligament to promote replication of the cells and thus speed up a healing of the tear in the ligament.

Therefore the truth is Marat is receiving treatment after a minor local "surgery" on his knee.

And if you are still confused - just be grateful that it is a process intent on getting Marat's knee back in shape so he can continue playing and making us all happy to see him back on the tennis playing field.

Please note that I must stress that this is not an official statement - just my attempt to try and give a logical explanation to all the speculation.

Game, set and catch

It’s Wimbledon, but not as we know it. This year, there’s a distinctly higher phwoar factor, says Françoise Brandon

Once upon a time, the world of tennis teemed with irresistible men. These players — peculiarly sexy, fiercely libidinous, fanciable in the extreme and with names like Ilie, Björn, Boris and Pat — were swaggering heroes. To be a female tennis fan of any age was to have hormonal flushes at the sight of sun-kissed superstars as they lolloped across Centre Court, or let rip at the umpire with the full force of their mighty lungs.

Then, in the mid 1990s, mummy’s boys Pete Sampras, Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Tim Henman arrived, and everything changed. All of a sudden, being a tennis fan wasn’t about appreciating rippling golden calves. Instead, it was about watching your favourite player win — or in Henman’s case, lose — followed by being pleased for him when he married his boring, blonde, long-term girlfriend. What’s the point of a killer serve if you’re as sexually alluring as Teddy Ruxpin in lederhosen?

Well, girls, you will be glad to know that tennis’s dark age is now over. This year’s Wimbledon promises a line-up of hot totty the calibre of which has not been seen for a decade. From tomorrow, Centre Court is once more set to be a testosterone-charged stamping ground for tantrum-happy hunks. Take Marat Safin, the smouldering Russian love god who has just appeared in American Vogue. With his playboy lifestyle and flowing locks, he’s the new Andre Agassi. Or Rafael Nadal, the explosive Spanish master of the furry ball, who’s more pin-up than press-up (although we suspect he’s done a few of those, too).

These guys are luscious-haired, stubbly, torrid and tattooed, and often look as if they’ve tipped up with a hangover. Hell, they’re rock stars. And here, for your delectation, are six of the best. (I've only posted the Marat bits ... the other 5 'hotties' are Roddick, Nadal, Clement, Ancic & Moya - here's the link if you want more http://women.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,18030-1649236_1,00.html)

MARAT SAFIN

NATIONALITY Russian.

AGE 25.

NICKNAME The Safinator.

DEMEANOUR Safin is very much the playboy of the pack — his love of fast cars, women and drinking is the talk of the circuit.

IF HE WERE A MOVIE STAR He has the swagger of Clint Eastwood and the looks of Ricky Martin. His sun-kissed skin and stubble make the iciest of women weak at the knees.

VITAL STATISTICS He grew up in Moscow. Aged nine, he cried when he lost to Anna Kournikova. At 14, he moved to Spain to train full-time and to “stop him from arguing so much”. His career highs so far are demolishing Pete Sampras to win the US Open in 2000 and fighting back to beat Federer at this year’s Australian. He now lives in Monaco.

STYLE Safin dismisses criticism that he is a party boy as “bullshit”, proving that he is not only thrilling to look at, but has an admirable way with words. But there is no doubt he is an enormous flirt, with a penchant for blondes (he once installed four in his court-side box). His groupies are known as Safinettes. His current girlfriend is Dasha Zhukova, a friend of Freddie Windsor.

TALK TO HIM About beer, his favourite topic.

DRAWBACKS Possibly a complete prat.

THEY SAY “Not only is he a beautiful tennis player on court, we also love him because he is a very naughty boy away from the courts. He loves fast cars and beautiful women, and that is good” — Leonid Moiseev, Russian ambassador to Australia.

WE SAY It is your duty — nay, your mission — to sort this “very naughty boy” out.

Hi guys,

I'm spending 15 in Bologne studying italian and last wednesday I just saw Marat pass across the Piazza Maggiore with his girlfriend. He looked fine, walking with an easy step, and very relaxed in shorts, an adidas T-shirt and flipflops.
I'm just sorry I didn't have the speed to run after him to ask for a foto and an autograph, because when I collected myself he was already around the corner.
Maybe I'll see him again and then I'll let you all know.

Davydenko shifts Safin down in ATP ratings

MOSCOW, July 25 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Nikolai Davydenko moved his eminent compatriot Marat Safin one spot down on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rating list.

According to the rating list, Davydenko remained in fifth position with 331 points that he replenished at the tennis tournament in Stuttgart.

Safin, recovering from a knee injury, had no chance to improve his 321 points and shifted to sixth position. :(

Safin and Davydenko shared the fifth position for two weeks.

The remainder of the ATP top ten rating list is as follows:
1. Roger Federer (Switzerland, 910 points)
2. Rafael Nadal (Spain, 737 points)
3. Andy Roddick (the USA, 446 points)
4. Lleyton Hewitt (Australia, 354 points)
7. Gaston Gaudio (Argentine, 302 points)
8. Guillermo Coria (Argentine, 299 points)
9. Mariano Puerta (Argentine, 263 points)

The 2002 soccer World Cup was awesome!!!! :D Your national team under Guus Hiddink did so well.

Hi Maria :wavey:
I try to catch up with all systems around here, though it's not easy.

You remembered our then coach Guus Hiddink. What a surprise!
He's been treated like a hero after the world cup here.
Recently I've heard he became an Aussie coach for its world cup team.
Many Koreans miss him, but I MISS Marat on court.

Nice to meet you. ;)

though the spanish football team was quite powerful.

30.07.05 Marat is spending the weekend in San Tropez and then will start tennis practice in Bologna on Monday. He feels good and ready to play.

This practice on Monday will be the final test on the knee and from there it will be decided if he is ready for the hard grind of the tennis on the US Hardcourts. Marat does not want to rush it and then have a relapse as happened previously with his wrist in 2003.

:woohoo:

Nothing really new but...

Q Are the tennis siblings Marat Safin and Dinara Safina Muslims? — Z Whitehead, London

A Marat Safin and his sister, inset, are Muslim Tatars, an ethnic group now found all across the old Soviet Union, but with large concentrations in the Crimea and Siberia. Historically, the Tatars were the decendants of Genghis Khan’s Mongols, who adopted Islam as their religion in the 14th century. They were a dominant force in what is now Russia and Ukraine until the late 15th century, when the ‘Tatar Yoke’ was lifted by the Muscovite King Ivan III. Safin says that although he was born in Moscow into the Islamic faith, neither he nor his parents practise the rituals, although his grandfather was a practising Muslim. Safin’s mother, Rausa, was a former top-10 Russian tennis player, while his father, Mikhail, a former decathlete, managed Moscow’s Spartak tennis club. Rausa taught Marat to play tennis until the age of 13. When he was 14 Safin moved to Valencia, Spain, to train with coach Rafael Mensua. — Julia Thorpe, Poole

For a good three years, everyone in Russia has been saying;"Besides Kafelnikov, we don't have any other good players! Only he will be able to achieve anything. When Kafelnikov leaves, Russian tennis will die altogether." So remembering this, it was generally accepted before Roland Garros, that the blond Kafelnikov, having married again, was Russia's champion. A very young Marat Safin was not even mentioned. Well, what was to be expected from a little known 18 year-old, who had only just managed to qualify for the draw with his god-only-knows entry number? But this young boy on the legendary french courts produced

In the first round, he cut Andre Agassi into ribbons. In the second round (a first, by the way, in Roland Garros History) our Marat completely destroyed defending champion Kuerten, then 'nailed' strong contender, Czech player Daniel Vacek. And all this was accomplished with his deadly, impertuable form as if he'd never been anything else.It seems, Russia now has a new star. The star who seems modest, and until now, quiet. And about whom, we know nothing yet.

Russia's team captain, Shamil Tarpischev, had already noticed Marat long ago. He even placed Marat in the match against the Americans during Davis Cup. For a novice like Marat, this was a mad testing , but he withstood the test in a worthy manner. Although he lost the match, he exerted a game beyond his own limits. And to the press, Agassi remarked, " I will tell my grandsons about this match." When the former world number one threatens to describe in precise detail his struggle with an 18 year-old boy, any commentary is unnecessary.

The telephone in the Safin apartment hasn't stopped ringing. Rausa and Mikhail, the parents of the new hero, were congratulated by people they haven't heard from in years. "Does Marat ring you?" I ask. "Certainley", replies Rausa, "Honestly, we barely talk about tennis. This is the first big tournament for our son. We don't want to make him nervous. However, I remind Marat that things are now difficult, heavy. True, there was a ridiculous moment when we spoke to him after his Agassi victory: Marat said, 'Mum, I'm going to book a flight to Moscow.' But I answered him, 'You know, you've had a tough time in France, but sit still.' Marat stayed, and he beat Kuerten."

Rausa Islanova knows better than anyone, what is necessary for Marat. Indeed, the mother of the young prodigy was well known in the past as a tennis player, the champion of the USSR and the first coach of young players: 'a supplier of hits.' "It is strange, " she smiles, "30 years ago, I played at Roland Garros, and if someone had said to me that after many years on the same courts, I would see my son also play..............."

But it must be said that Rausa did not impose tennis on Marat, unlike many arrogant parents. Although, Marat was only 5 months old when he first appeared on court - he arrived with his mum during her coaching sessions in a carrycot, because there was no-one else to leave him with. As he grew up, he began to toddle around the other kiddies, who were being taught in a group by his mum. He walked, he looked, then he picked up a racket. "Do you know what struck me?", recalls Rausa, " with all the other children, we had to teach them tennis: how to hold the racket, how to hit a ball, how to move. But with Marat, it all came together immediately, without any explanation. "

Recently in a Roland Garros press conference, Marat said something that really surprised the reporters. When asked "Why did you come without your coach?", he replied, " I was confident I would pass through the qualifiers. And he [my coach] had agreed to meet me later." But Safin's parents had known about this since his childhood. His mum has never forgotten the time she sent Marat to buy some milk for his then newborn sister, Dinara. But instead of milk, he bought porridge. "Why did you buy porridge?" asked his mum. Marat authoratively stated , "The shops sometimes run out of milk. Let her get used to porridge. It is always possible to buy more porridge."

There is another example: by the age of 10, Marat had a serious rival, Nikitin, in Moscow. And time after time, Marat lost to him. Just before another match against Nikitin, Marat, picking up his bag, suddenley announced to his parents, "You know, today I'll go on my own. It will make things simpler for me. It's not necessary for you to come with me. I'll be destroyed by Nikitin anyway." And so it happened: 10 year old Safin defeated the invincible Nikitin.

However, Rausa and Mikhail can only describe so much about Marat. They only see their son during rare visits to Moscow. Indeed, Marat hasn't lived there with his parents since he was 14. Yes, Marat was only 14 when it was decided that he should go to Valencia and start an independent life at the local tennis academy.

"It was very difficult for my wife," says Mikhail, "Indeed, Rausa wasn't a bad coach for Marat. But she clearly understood that there is a point when a mum can no longer be a coach. It was necessary, for him to become a man we needed another strong man involved. So we involved Marat's sponsor. Parting was painful. How do you let a 14 year old boy go to into a strange country? Especially as Marat spoke no spanish. After only 2 days, he rang home almost in tears saying "Take me back to Moscow! I don't understand anything! I can't even understand what my landlady says to the shop assistants........"

However, Marat soon overcame this small weakness. He made many friends, but the landlady became almost like Marat's second mother. Neighbours, with great affection, would watch each morning as the Russian tennis player accompanied the old lady into the store and followed her around, carrying all her heavy bags. "He was so simple, and polite," said the landlady herself, "He was nothing like the other young people. It was as if Marat was from another century." Rausa, on the whole, agrees with his landlady, "You know, my son is simply not capable of being rude. He likes to help anyone who askes him. For example, Marat was becoming uninterested in some of his old school friends. However, he never said to these children that they could no longer call him. He would ask me to tell them he had gone to train. I tell you, you'll see it on court."

That, then, is the truth. During Roland Garros, a curious thing happened during his match with Kuerten, which confirms the words of Marat's mother. The umpire decided that Kuerten's ball was out and Kuerten began to argue that it was in. Marat approached the umpire and said, "include Kuerten's ball, actually, it was in."

The destroyer of Agassi and Kuerten, and a person of extreme modesty. A popular guy in France, he only recently bought a car.......even if it was second hand. And he's completely indifferent to the clothes he wears. For the last 2 years, Marat walked around in only one pair of jeans. When they invited the Russian team to a banquet, it was necessary to wear a navy blue suit, a suit they had to provide Marat with. All the coaches were assured that the players owned a suitable white suit [tuxedo?] and necktie aswell. And yes, they all owned one, except Marat, who turned up in a striped jacket!!

At the moment, after losing in the fourth round of Roland Garros, Marat rang home and said, "Why do journalists chase me? It's quite simply, a nightmare!!! An hour after every match, I have to do an interview. I'm always watched in the hotel. Really, do they have no-one else to write about? I won three matches and suddenly I'm a star?!?"

"He is always like this," sighs mum, " when he wins, he plays it down with a wave of his hand and says, "well, you would think...." and after losing, he still reassures us with, 'well, it's not like it's the last match of my life. Tomorrow, I'll take it and win.'" Unlike many boys, Marat never had a childhood idol. "I never wanted to imitate anyone." said a young Safin. But he won many admirers, even Cedric Pioline, and even if he hadn't, many Russians will begin to imitate Mr Marat Safin now.

Thanks for the article, Andrea

I think I have read it in Russian some time ago and as far as I remember it was a little bit different in that part:

after his Agassi victory: Marat said, 'Mum, I'm going to book a flight to Moscow.' But I answered him, 'You know, you've had a tough time in France, but sit still.'

I think Rausa has told him that the hot water in Moscow is stopped, so he'd better stay in Paris few more days...or something like that :D
That's a nice article (especially the part how he shopped for baby Dinara  )

World No. 4 Marat Safin pulls out of Rogers Cup with injured knee
http://www.canada.com/sports/tennis...3b-0068f5d0082e

Wednesday, August 03, 2005

MONTREAL (CP) - Marat Safin, ranked fourth in the world, has pulled out of the upcoming Rogers Cup tennis tournament to allow his injured left knee to heal.

Safin underwent minor surgery on the knee following Wimbledon and needs at least one more week of rest before he returns to competition, his agent told tournament officials Wednesday.

Last month, World No. 1 and defending champion Roger Federer pulled out of the tournament with a foot injury.

The tournament opens Saturday, with the main draw starting Monday.

04.08.05 Officially Marat is only withdrawing today - it seems that the news leaked early to the press. Please note that it was always a possibility with his knee treatment that he would not make Montreal. After practising in Bologna it was decided that he would not be ready for Montreal. Marat will go to Valencia this weekend and practice there and then fly to Cincinnati next Friday. It is still his intention to play Cincinnati.

Good that he is taking it slow and sees he is not ready so there is not such a risk that the knee will get worse or be re-injuried.
good luck with practising and get well!!!!

05.08.05 Marat News

Marat is fine and so is his knee. The treatment has gone well despite reports to the contrary circulating from the Russian Press. Marat has been practising in Bologna since Monday 01/08 with Davide Scala of Italy. Davide's claim to fame - Marat beat him in the 1st round of qualifying for the French Open in 1998 - the year Marat went on to beat Andre Agassi in the main draw.

Marat has been practising on clay to get himself physically fit. He is staying in Bologna instead of going to Valencia and tomorrow Saturday Peter Lundgren will join him. On Monday Marat will start practising on hardcourts.

Thursday 11/08 Marat and Peter will fly to Moscow for Marat to pick up all his clothes etc and then on Friday 12/08, they will fly to Cincinnati for the Masters Series Cincinnati.
The 1st time I beat Andrea to it. ;)

Yeah, I mean, I was only relieved, that he hasn´t pull out of the US Open yet. So we still can hope. Doesn´t mean that I´m totally convinced that Marat will play. But I try to be positive, I think that´s also what Webby´s doing. The only thing we can do is wait  .

I like to say sorry to all my fans that I do not play in Montreal
especially for those fans who were coming to support me.
I wanted to play but I realise I have to be a little bit careful.
If my knee is not ready I could have trouble for the rest of the year.
So I am practising hard here in Bologna with Davide Scala and tomorrow Peter will come.

11.08.05 Marat & Peter are in Moscow while Marat sorts out what he needs for the US having been in Italy for over a month. The treatment went well and he is feeling fit & ready although a bit short of match practice. He & Peter travel to the US Friday 12th and they will arrive in Cincinnati Friday night. Also travelling with Marat for this part of the tour will be his childhood fitness coach from Valencia Miguel M. There is a good chance that Marat will apply for a Wild Card for New Haven to get extra match practice before the US Open.

great news. I can`t wait for Cincinnati!!!!

"With regards to the China Open - Beijing - we would like to advise why Marat's name is not appearing on the entry list. The ownership of the Open Beijing changed recently and the agreement that Marat had for appearing in Beijing was not signed with the new owners. Negotiations are currently taking place with the new owners to ensure that Marat will be there to defend his title which Marat definitely wants to do. Hopefully all will be completed in the near future and Marat will be there to defend his title."

The word on the street is that its about the money. the new owners dont wanna pay marat the amount the old ones were. Ah, c'est la vie!!

Marat Safin - From the Horse's Mouth

Nobody else seems to, but I'm assuming Marat Safin would know and he said yesterday that he did not- repeat, did not! - have knee surgery. From the Cincinnati Enquirer:

Safin has been rehabbing an injured knee that he said did not require surgery, just rest.

"I've been struggling for five months since March," said Safin who won the Australian Open in February. "I'd been taking pain killers and injections in my knee. I just decided to stop straight up after Wimbledon to take care of the knee. Otherwise my knee would have been destroyed and it would have cost me six months to one year."
-----------------------------

From The Dartmouth Online:

The one wild card at the U.S. Open this year will be Russian Marat Safin. Safin's temper and personality always make him unpredictable and while he hasn't been outstanding, he at least has given consistent performances at the majors this year (barring his Australian Open victory). If Safin is capable of playing well after his recent knee surgery, then he is the one man capable of making this a truly entertaining tournament. Safin is the only player in the world right now who is the equal to, or has an even greater talent than, Federer. While he lacks Federer's mentality, he is capable of stringing together some absolutely great performances, which could win him the title.
