Doesn't anyone else miss Rafael Nadal at this AO?

I do, and I never thought I'd say that. I don't dislike Nadal, but wouldn't call myself a fan.

Still, I miss his fist-pumping, Vamos-screeching, Popeye-muscled presence.

Am I alone?

Ok.

You all know I am not a lover of nadal, but I do think I miss him  I would have loved to see safin/nadal play. Because I feel both would have a chance of winning the title, damn I would love to see a safin nadal match in fact. Two big losses to the tournament. Quite frankly, I am probably agassi isnt in the tournament, but these two need to be in it :yeah:

i dont understand why many dislike Nadal

Hewitt early in his career & still gets on peoples nerve for the way he conducts himself on & off the court
yes AO is missing him becoz last year after the AO where Safin played a memorable match to defeat Federer & win the title
the emergence of Nadal kept the tour interesting when federer was sweeping all else away

Clara Bow

Yes, I miss him quite a bit.

He is one of my favorites and I thought that his match against Hewitt last year was one of the best in the tournament. I was also anxious to see how he would do this year, since the Aussie Open is the GS that he has gotten through the farthest outside of the French Open.

I also miss Safin and Agassi of course. Further, I always think it’s a shame when some of the top players are not able to be at a Grand Slam, regardless or whether or not they are one of my faves.

As a Fed fan, I happen to think that should my fav win the title, it won't mean as much as if the likes of Agassi, Safin + Nadal were there and I reckon Fed will probably think the same, though he wouldn't say it. Everyone wanted to see a rematch between Rog + Marat - game of the year in 2005.

also, as sum1 else mentioned earlier, this was the best slam result rafa had last yr apatr from the french and look how much he has improved since then. i think he would have gone reali far in the tournament..hu knows hu he may have put out of the tournament!

The same forehand, over and over. I mean, i enjoy variety and i know clay season means longer points and tactics and so on. But on a hard court i want a mix of attack and defense. I'm not going to say "i'm so happy 'coz he's not there" or something like that, but i don't miss his style at all

Also, with Eurosport's s***** coverage of the ATP tour there's a strong possibility that I may have to wait until RG to watch them play. :(

I am not sure I even mentioned his name in last few months.. Until this post, that is..

Anyway, as much of a sympathy I can have to an injured player, if Nadal's career were to end right here right now, apart from that personal sympathy I would not have had any further regrets, as, I am of opinion, he brings nothing new to the table. If Federer or Safin were to retire now, that , of course, would be different.

I know what you mean. Of course it is easy to see from my sig that I am a supporter of Fed as well but it is a shame the number of people who seem to value Fed having a great win percentage over more competative tennis. Watching the great matches is what makes tennis a great spectator sport.

Rafa-Roger on the rebound ace would be awesome to see and i think a possible classic. Now Rafa will not get to match up to the other men on rebound ace in a slam for another year which is a shame. It would be very interesting to see how good he really is on this surface.

All through the year while some people have said "Rafa is only good on clay". This is plainly not true as you can see by looking at his results on hard courts but I am still left to wonder how good he could do at this slam.

You can't say those things like they are facts. Nadal is young and we have no idea how he would fair on hard court against Roger. He might turn out to be brilliant on rebound ace but it is just a theory. He is on a different level of tennis to that which he was last year but beating Fed on a surface other than clay if he plays well is not an easy thing to do. Nadal may be capable of knocking out Fed on rebound ace but until you see a mathc you have nothing to base it on.

Nalabandian has NOT shown time and time again that he can roll Federer at his peak. He is a fantastic player and his game is great for trying to defeat Roger Federer but saying he can beat Roger time and again at his peak is not an accurate thing to say.

Nalbandian beat Roger Federer 4 times in a row between the middle of 2002 and late 2003 before Roger notched up his first win in their head to head. Since then Roger won three more encounters in a row as he began to dominate the mens game. He became world number one in this time and most people would not dispute that he has been the best player in the world for a while now (even people who dislike Roger don't usually dispute this). Then Nalbandian nothced up an absolutely huge win in a classic five set thriller in the TMC. An awesome win and well played to David Nalbandian but there are few who would seriously claim that Nalbandian has beaten Federer at his best since Federer became a great player.

I also dispute your claim that Nalbandian is the ONLY player "capable" of beating Roger. I would say there were probably 20 or so players, who, at the start of the tournament had the possible skills required to beat Roger without a default. Of course this is not if Roger plays up to full standard and some of those players i speak of probably willl meet Roger and will probably lose. You shouldn;t state these opinions of yours which do not seem particularly accurate to me as facts for they aren't.
