Darn, another wrong PAW pick.

Seriously, though, I heard that Monfils called for an injury treatment? Hope he's OK.

I am starting to wonder about Monfils, he is young still but he could be just another french wonder who never maded it big.

Yeah, that's why it's called a prediction. Cuz you don't KNOW.

He got a prediction wrong. Doesn't make him stupid.

I am starting to think all those thrashings by the top players at Kooyong hurt Monfils mentally. He should have never went there.

Ok then. If he guesses right 3 out of 4 then we forgive him. ;)

Maybe if Warthead predicts Monfils to go down in the first round of the French, Gael will win it

2nd straight time Wertheim predicts Monfils to make the semis of a Slam only to go down in the 1st round.

Overrated.

not sure that i would classify the far more experienced Horna beating newbie Monfils as an "upset". but congrats Luis.

Yeah, I think he should stop playing tennis, this match makes it obvious that he won't make it big. Or maybe we could wait.

i dont think the result was a surprise
becoz with manty of the younger players
its too early to put too much expectation on them
as for Mofils he is talented but like what one commentator said he will do well but is not at the level of say Gasquet & Nadal & maybe Murray
he is strong with powerful shots just not as talented as the others

I saw the match and Lucho was very impressive, but why would that shock people on MTF.

Indeed, I even wondered how Horna has not a better ranking. Monfils was playing awfully on the other other hand, only defending, taking no risk.

When a guy is seeded, coming back from a final in an atp tournament, and meeting a guy ranked in the 80s, you can fairly call that an upset. But I don't think that people are "shocked".

There are plenty of reasons why Lucho doesn't have a better ranking and I don't have the time to go into them, it's all in the frustrating player thread. If it's an upset then it's a shock win as no one expected Horna to win.

I don't see it as a shock win or an upset. Horna is capable of competing with the best on his day, and Monfils is miles away from that stage at the moment.

Horna :yeah:

I am not surprised either that Horna beat Mofils. Give me a break. Horna is a much more experienced player than Monfils, who is still trying to come into his own.

And how does one determine after one match that Monfils was mentally affected by his losses at Kooyong? That is just a baseless assumption.

For what it's worth Monfils was not the only 'young gun' to lose in his first round. So did the natural wonders Gasquet, Murray and Djokovic. Give the guys, (and in particular Monfils (re this thread) a damn break. He has been out there playing and trying to improve himself. He made the final of Qatar losing to the best player in the world, and he was the greenest player at Kooyong among a wealth of experienced and more accomplished players.

After all, the year has just begun.

I came back for the Aussie Open. I didn't have anything on this match though, I'm just not that surprised Horna won. The thumbs up was because I admire his fighting spirit.

When a player is the underdog and posts a straight sets win, you can fairly call it an upset. Simple as that. No reason for all the drama here. ;)

Monfils wouldn't have won a Mickey Mouse today, he just looked exhausted and probably not at full physical strength. He really got outlasted and dominated by somebody much more experienced. A really good match of Horna, let's see what he has to offer for the next round!

well.....i've been following horna for quite a long time already...and what i can say is that..honnestly you can never tell when its about this guy.....he is experienced..of course...he has been a pro since 98 when he turned 18, the max rank he has got his around 30, in doubles, although he hasnt been participating lately, he is very good at it.......but the tnig is that he is to temperamental....he gets TOO angry when he looses a point, and also gets TOO happy when he makes something good.....he doesnt get that point in the middle....so with this result, i wasnt surprised, since for me there's no way to telll wheter he will have a good or a bad match...

Monfils was sick that's the end of the story. And Lucho seemed to not suffer of any of his several injuries he has recently had. I thought Gael would have won in straight sets anyway, he didn't - than good for Lucho and all the best in the 2nd round. I wouldn't be completely surpired if he lost to the quick Phau.
But I hope it will be still Lucho through in three.

(don't feel suggested by my Gael Sopot King atavar, though Lucho is a Sopot legend, too - and I like both and wish all the successes to both)

:ras: I'm a mother for more than one child. Monfils and Del Potro can be adopted brothers in my family ;)
I'm having a small break from Argentinian tennis, but I'll be back with my ARG atavars and signatures don't worry.

Monfils was sick that's the end of the story.

If he was that sick, he shouldn't have played, he took the court and therefore he took the consequences, if Monfils wins it's such a great courageous win cause he is sick and if he loses he was sick.

If it was up to me, I wouldn't have played. His decision, his consequences. I only mean people usually aren't quick when they have higher temperature and stuff, and Lucho Horna immediately takes advantage of this, that's why he won. I guess Monfils was even more defensive than usually. He thought he would have won anyway, though when people show up on court, they want to fight and win (just why didn't other young guns Djokovic and Murray retired while feeling sick at USO). This time it didn't work.

Alright but now let's give few days to Gael to recover and let's be happy with Lucho Horna giving only 6 games to Bjorn Phau!

It proves definitely it wasn't Gael's sickness fault, but Lucho is in good shape and fighting!

cmon..i dont care if you like or not horna....havent you read my signature? lol.....i follow him because he is peru's #1, at least till last year, for me, horna was a bad player...but i still supported him. Now, maybe its chance, good luck, or the fact that he is playing better, and he is being constant......but i honnestly dont care if someone insults him or kiss his feet.....:)...as long as we can argue in a healthy way...i guess its all good :)
