January 16 - Nico went up from 65 to 61.

Of course, with this loss to Simon, he'll lose the points from last year that he had to defend so he'll probably go back down to 65 again.

I'm hoping that he can make it back up to the top forty.

Gaby and he want top twenty.

Well, I guess they have their work cut out for them then...The LA swing of clay courts is coming up so maybe Nico will find his stride there. He look good and did well in Auckland so hopefully he'll get that form back. It would be great to see him do well in his home town of Vina del Mar.

January 30 - huge hit in the rankings - down to 69 because of the first round loss at the Oz Open.

NicoFan
03-29-2006, 12:00 AM
I know that he wants to be in the top ten or at least the top twenty.

But for what its worth  I really only care if he gets to 32 because then he will get seeded at all the Slams and at IW and Miami. The rest of the Masters Series I don't care if he gets seeded because they are so small that there is no such thing as a good draw whether you are seeded or unseeded - the only benefit of being seeded is not getting Rafa or Roger in the first round.

So 32 for me is the number.

Cuz last time he was trying for top ten he was miserable. And he's miserable when he's ranked low. So 32 is a nice in between number. He will be playing well but he can relax and party and have a good time.

Again that's just my opinion. ;)

kidnicky
03-29-2006, 12:43 AM
yeah 32 is fine but maybe even more in the top 20 :p I don't care the ranking just not Federer or Rafa in the draws please

Yeay for Nico! :woohoo: He worked so hard to get to his goal.

I have no clue on these points. Just like Fernando going up to #9 without playing, I don't understand how Nico can move up without playing. But since he is playing, it will be nice if he can get into the top 30! It will help in staying in top 32 for the RG seedings.

kidnicky

Yeay Nico! :woohoo:

I hate rooting against people I like but the magic number to be seeded for RG is 32.

So as much as I like them, the people around him must have bad Rome's and Hamburg's. Sorry to them, but Nico comes first!

So Juan Ignacio, Lord Carlos, Jose, Feli and (I'm so sorrrry Sjoukje! ) Fer V. all must lose.

Also looking for them to lose early are Tursunov, Gael, Paradorn, PHM, Xavier, Youzhny and C. Rochus.

June 11 - up to 32!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :woohoo:

NicoFan
06-12-2006, 12:52 AM
BTW - asked Judio if Nico has a chance to get seeded for Wimbledon because of the weird way they seed. He seed that if Nico is in the top 32, he'll be seeded. The way they seed only affects the order of the top 32 which may be different from the ATP's order of the top 32.

But of course, Nico may drop down. Because even though he doesn't have points to defend, those around him are playing in regular tournaments, can earn points and move past him.

Now Guille, Andreev, and Chucho aren't paying. And of course don't want to wish bad things on guys but that gives him some wiggle room on whether or not he'll be seeded.

well that's the last thing that we should had worried about ... actually the worst in this case is to go back to Chile after Wimbledon, when he should had practiced on the european clay but hell noooo!! he was to bussy having his good bye party :o

I'm going to be sad for it but this time if he doesn't deffend his points on the european clay it won't be because he's having a bad time or something like that, this time it's all by his own fault.

I HATE THE FREAKING RANKING THING!!!!!

NicoFan
07-06-2006, 09:59 PM
I didn't mind him going home after RG either because he hadn't been home in so long - he deserved a break and a good vacation.

Its this last one that makes me crazy. With so many points to defend, it still is a mystery to me.

Oh well...love him anyway. He's our sweetie.

Okay...the reason Nico dropped so much last week according to Judio (who is always right  ) is that the 75 points from Gstaad last year dropped off this past Monday.

So this week in Bastad, he's defending his Amersfoort points - 40 points. Yes, I know...the ranking points are stupid. So in Amersfoort next week, he'll have to defend his Kitz points - which are a lot because he made it to the SFs.

But in Kitz, I'm assuming, he'll defend his Washington points - which are only 5 because he lost in the first round.

But I'm not sure - I'm just guessing there.

I hate the rankings system. The only one that understands it is Judio!!!

kidnicky
07-11-2006, 09:58 PM
and the 40 points from Amersfoot that are now for Bastad are from what? quaterfinals??

and assuming that you got it now NicoFan, it's good news now 'cause he already lost the points the last week and now the points from Kitz on the last year will be in Amersfoot where there's a regular entry list, not as complicated as the one here in Bastad, so it seems that after losing all those points, he'll have a good chance to recover some spots and more points that he was defending the next weeks, at least I hope so :awww:

I agree with you, the point thing is just stupid :ras:

NicoFan
07-11-2006, 10:00 PM
I know that its definitely only 40 points this week from Amersfoort last year - and yes, that's QF points.

I have a post into Judio to make sure that then Amersfoort will be Kitz points, and Kitz will be Washington points.

I'll let y'all know when Judio posts back.

LOVELY
07-11-2006, 10:11 PM
Ranking points works from date to date I think .(So last year Gstaad was from July 4th to July 10th )that's why players defend points of the same week of last year  I'm not sure if I'm clear

Okay...I have no clue about rankings. :haha: NEVER EVER listen to anything about say about rankings.

Here's Judio's response:

The 2006 Calendar has now caught up again with last year
as there was a spare Davis Cup week in 2005

Amersfoort was in the week of 18 July 05

and will come off along with Stuttgart and Indianapolis
on Monday 24 July 06 after Amersfoort has been played this year

Massu is not defending any points this week so can increase his
ranking by getting more than 40 points (His Best 5th)

I don't know what he's going to do - he needs to get that ranking back up at least to the low 30's. He's got 150 points to defend at the US Open (4th round) - so if he gets another shitty shitty draw, he's screwed and will drop way down into the 40s and won't get on the direct entry list for Madrid or Paris (yes, here we go again :sad). I think he needs to spend September in challengers - though again yes, I know, he'll never do it. But I wish he would.

 Its so frustrating to see how hard he's worked this year (with lots of succes on claycourts) and to be done in with these crappy draws. I hope your senario doesn't come to pass Nicofan, but I know with the luck he's had that it could.

I will try and get the official ranking posted, but Judio seems to be always right on the money about these rankings. What a sad situation  Because it is hard for me to see Nico defeating Fernando on a hard court unless maybe Fernando is just tired because he has played more at this time than Nico

I just looked at the rankings - I had thought that if Nico doesn't do well at the US Open, he'd be in the low 40's - looks more like out of the top 50.

It doesn't seem fair. I know he's working hard, but he's had no luck in the draws. It must be so discouraging for him. I feel so bad for him.

He really needs to play some challengers in September - again, I know he won't, but he needs to. Get some court time, get some confidence back, and get some much needed points. He keeps going to the big tournaments where he gets sucky draws and loses in the first round - isn't doing him (or his ranking) any good.

well this ranking thing jus sucks!!! :ras: :ras: I hate this freaking thing!!! 'cause I can't believe that we'd have the same scenario for Madrid and Paris than the last year, after all the work that he has done and after all the success that he's having this year, except for the freaking master series where the stupid draws don't help us at all.

and I still can't see anything planed for the rest of september so who knows, maybe actually now he's thinking about the challengers thing, but just for the record, we've seen that it doesn't matter if you're seeded or not, we've seen the draws for Rafa beign the no. 2 in the world, and we've seen the ridiculous draws facing qualifiers vs qualifiers .... so actually for me to the hell with the damn seeded thing!! I'm going to be possitive and sending good vibes for Nico in these next weeks, I know he can do it!!!! and I BELIEVE IN HIM!!!!!!!!!

Nico won't be seeded for the US Open. Which we knew after what happened in Toronto and Cincy.

Judio has him at #40 in the ATP rankings for tomorrow.

Ancic and Andreev will not play (I believe people said Ancic is out).

So he'll be #38 for the US Open.

No way 6 more guys will pull out - and wouldn't want that anyway. It would be a sucky US Open if 8 guys in the top 32 pulled out.

Shame really. The guys around him are all bunched up - if he had played only one tournament this month, got 40 points, he would be back into the top 40 - and probably wouldn't have to qualify for Paris. If he didn't want to go to Beijing or Mumbai, he could have gone to Bucharest. And there's a good challenger this upcoming week with some bigger names - Horna, Zab, Coria - could have gotten some playing time, confidence back...and most importantly, points. I don't know why he feels that he can't play a challenger again - these guys do, Verdasco (ranked far far higher than Nico) plays challengers now and again. I don't get it.

I know...he worked so hard to move back up the rankings, and if this continues, he won't be in much better a place than he was when the year started.

And last year, he didn't really take an offseason - went to Argentina and worked through the offseason so he could move back up.

Don't know if he'll be willing to do that again this year.

Of course, he's had so much time off since after Roland Garros, the question is does he really even need an offseason? ;) He's had about 2 mini-offseasons in the last 3 months and this month is long enough to be considered an offseason break. :haha:

No1Rios - he has to get into the Masters Series events before he can do well in them.

He's not on the qualifying list for Madrid - and there is no guarantee that anyone will drop out.

And we'll have to see if he signs up for the qualifying list for Paris.

He hasn't done well at a Masters Series event since 2003. He should have gone to the smaller tournaments especially Palermo (even though it was clay) - with that poor entry list, he could have picked up a lot of points. He's got to start looking towards next year and getting seeded for the Oz open. Even 3 or 4 places at each of the small tournaments would have been something.

I'm with Alx - he needed to get used to the surface. All these other guys have been playing on indoor hard - and it takes Nico time to get used to a surface.

October 30 - Judio has Nico going up to 43! :yeah:

I would have loved to see him above 40 by the end of the year - but alas, with this draw in Paris-Bercy, that will be hard to do. We can hope though and send our pumpkin very positive vibes!!!!

And maybe he can help himself a bit by doing a couple challengers before the end of the year??? Yes, I know...never will happen.

I don't like math.

But glad you understand it, and :yeah: to the Chilean press who were able to figure it out and explain it to everyone in Chile.

Maybe the ATP can publish a book: Rankings For Dummies.

(There's a popular books series here in the States that has every subject covered. Geometry for Dummies, Knitting for Dummies, Baseball for Dummies, etc. etc. Explains everything in a very simple way. So I'm not insulting anyone. ;) )

They want to make the game more fan friendly then make a system that people can actually understand without getting a fucking PhD in math.

Brahna

If Nico wins the Sunrise Challenger, he will be 43, so he should be in the TMS Roma main draw. That's good news!:)
Anyway, I let the explanations for No1 Rios!

NicoFan
03-17-2007, 03:48 PM
I guess its the stupid 5th best thing again. Which I don't understand at all.

So he has to win the entire thing I guess - which is what latercera must have been talking about earlier when they said if he didn't win the entire thing it wouldn't mean anything (which I disagree with- just getting confidence is good too).

Sparko1030
03-17-2007, 05:29 PM
 I've given up trying to figure out how they arrive at ranking points (No1Rios seems to understand-he must be a math genuis ) You're right of course Nicofan, even if he doesn't rise in rank, the confidence he's gaining at Sunrise is worth it. :yeah:

kidnicky
03-17-2007, 08:04 PM
see NicoFan I told you that it wouldn't help that much if Nico doesn't win the challenger but I gave up of trying to understand the stupid ranking thing :ras: the important thing, no matter what happens today, is that he's playing good, he is used to hardcourts now and that he has gained a loooooot of confidence that, like he says, Confidence in tennis is all!! :yeah:

ChinoRios4Ever
03-17-2007, 09:34 PM
Nico needs to reach the final at Sunrise to add some points (6 points in this case... not so much )

if he wins Sunrise he will win 30 points, is 80 points for winning the Sunrise challenger and he will replace that for the 50 points of New Haven's QF

ChinoRios4Ever
03-17-2007, 09:35 PM
if he wins Sunrise will be #47 according to Judio's stats

NicoFan
03-17-2007, 09:42 PM
Thanks for that.

Let me understand this -he lost the 20 points from IW. And now on top of it he has to defend 50 points from some freaking summer event?

This 50 points thing is stupid - so in New Haven will he have to defend those 50 points yet again? It's like freaking double jeopardy.

What a stupid system.

I like baseball and (American) football better - you win a game, you go up one game. You lose a game, you go down one game. You don't need a freaking PhD in math and keep track of 50 points here and there to understand it.

Poor Nico...you work so hard and get to the SFs but no he still gets nada.

Talk about being screwed over...

No wonder there's a huge difference between the top players and the bottom players. The bottom players get a little bit of luck for part of one year, and then they pay for it over and over and over again the next year. The way the system is set up, they can never get ahead. They are always lose points but in order to gain points have to defend some random points from months away. Brilliant system ATP...

Nico is never going to go back up the rankings... The only way he'll go up is if he does well at a big event...and that never happens.

And this means Rome and Hamburg are out - he's not getting in either of those now - so he's out of MC, Rome and Hamburg. I thought he'd get these points and he'd get into at least Rome.

Why the fuck do these guys even try when the system is against them???

Brahna
03-17-2007, 09:53 PM
:haha: A new rant from NicoFan! :worship:

Don't worry Nico will play Roma, if he is not in the main draw, (but I'm sure he will), there will surely be enough withdrawal for let him enter in the main draw directly!;)

Have faith, NicoFan!;)

Thanks for the explanations No1 Rios, you were the only one able to answer NicoFan's question!;)

EDIT - Btw la Tercera says Nico will be 43 if he wins the Sunrise title! So... It's hard to figure out!

ChinoRios4Ever
03-17-2007, 10:04 PM
let's explain:

Sunrise it's only a CHALLENGER EVENT!!!!!, who gives only 80 points for the winner, because it's a $100.000 challenger, if Sunrise were a $125.000 will give 90 points to the winner

if Nico dont enter Monte-Carlo (he will enter for sure), Rome and Hamburg he will not count that points, he will count points of MM tournaments or challenger that he plays or played...

the top 50 ALWAYS WILL COUNT HIS 18 COUNTABLE TOURNAMENTS POINTS BETWEEN: 4 GS, 9 AMS and 5 MM tournaments, because the top 50 MUST NEED TO PLAY THOSE TOURNAMENTS BY RULE, the players outside the top 50 can add 18 free countable tournaments (if they dont play the 4 GS and 9 AMS)

for example if you had the points breakdown of Sergio Roitman (who is #70 or something like that now) you can see that he has maybe the 70% of his points from challenger events... when he start to play more big events like the GS and AMS he will replace that tournament points for the challenger events points... that was the case of Carlos Berlocq last year...

Nico has almost nothing on AMS, only a 3rd round in Miami and 2nd round in Madrid, the rest only 1st rounds in all AMS... he needs to play better in the AMS to get a better rank, vamos NICO!!!!!! :fiery:

PS1: La Tercera dont have ANY IDEA of Rankings points, El Mercurio is the better place to know about rankings from chilean press...

PS2: Nico lost 15 points of IW, not 20 points, losing in the 1st round of a AMS event means 5 points...

TommyB.

Nico never does well in MS events...only a couple times.

So he's going to be in 50 hell forever.

Yet again...why bother.

He needs to find a new profession...

The way tennis is set up, only the big tournaments count.

I'd rather watch another sport. Where ALL games count...big or small. Doesn't matter if you play the first place team or the last place team...a point is a point is a point. They all count.

Thanks for all the explainations No1Rios-it is pretty complicated.

03-17-2007, 10:57 PM
It is too complicated.

Tennis...the fan friendly sport.

We do have to be positive. But it's hard when the system is against guys like him. The top guys always do well in the big tournaments. The really low ranked players don't have many points to defend. It's the guys in the middle that seemed to get screwed.

I always rooted for top ranked players until Nico so never had to understand the system - they were always at the top so who cared about points. And never knew until I started to root for Nico how whacked out the system is and how it only helps the top players.

kidnicky
03-18-2007, 02:54 AM
so it seems that NicoFan wants to set up a bomb in the ATP offices right?? don't worry chica I'd help you with that any time

this stupid system is absurd, I'm always fighting about this and all the people keep telling me that all sports have ranking systems but again, no other sport has this stupid ranking system, what the hell Nico had to deffend points from NH now when we are like 5 months away from NH?!?!?! ... and besides, yeah the points of the fucking big tournaments, no matter if he could do great in a freaking MS after that we'd have to start putting candles in churches for praying to defend those points the next year so for me is pointless :ras: I still remember the stupid thing of defending the freaking points from the olympics when the olympics are played every 4 years so that's ridiculous

I'm sick about the ranking thing and to be honest, I know that if he doesn't make it for the MS in clay he'd feel bad but I had a great week this time, Nico gaining confidence and improving his game so for me the MS can go to hell 'cause we always have the same winner there so I don't see the point to play them, just for the money :haha:

And finally, yes all of us have to be positive, no matter if it's difficult or not but beign so mad doesn't help Nico at all, he needs to feel our positive vibes :p and no matter what happened today I feel so proud of him 'cause maybe for the ATP this was a challenger, but not for me, the main draw was amazing and Nico had a great week :worship:

So for me the ATP can go to hell as usual and I'll stop trying to understand their stupid system .... I'll put a bomb there someday so they'd stop screwing Nico's life :rolls:

Nico stays at #50

he reached the SF at Sunrise Challenger, but it only gained 36 points, it's the 20th tournament of Nico... (the 2nd Non-countable tournament points)

Nico needs to win at least 2 matches in Miami to defend the point that he gained last year...

CRITICAL: Nico has 9 1st round loses in the 14 AMS and GS tournament...

He doesn't do well at MS or GS events.

Which is why I'm so surprised he's not playing in the Valencia tournament. He's hardly played this year, and he's giving himself more vacation? Instead of going to a tournament that he might have a chance to do well in because it's a smaller tournament?

For Nico then the clay season is going to be 3 MS events, Casablanca, Estoril, and RG.

But he's not getting into any of the 3 MS events because Mr. Disney changed it from 64 to 56 players in the draw. And even if he does get in, he never does well there...or hasn't in a long time.

RG is never good to him.

So that leaves only Casablanca and Estoril.

He's got final points to defend in Casablanca.

And Estoril is always a catastrophe for him.

I'm trying to belief, stay positive, be patient - but this is looking bad.

Kid is planning to go to Montreal...me too...but I highly doubt we'll see him there. His ranking situation by that time is going to be a disaster, and he won't get into Montreal or Cincy either because I think Mr. Disney's changes affect the number of men allowed in the draw at those tournaments too - but I'm not 100% certain of that.

Nicofan - stay POSITIVE

It's not useful for Nico to play in Valencia for his ranking, he won't win any points unless he'll reach the semifinals. Of course, he could play some matches before Monte-Carlo...

And don't say that RG is never good for him and the others tournaments Estoril, Rome... He's trying to change his game and maybe this year, he'll have some good results there

STAY POSITIVE !

I don't even want to know why he wouldn't get points in Valencia unless he makes it to the SFs since he didn't play that week last year so he shouldn't have to defend any points. :(

I'm sure it's more of the same - best 5 crap...

I have to clarify my post.

I'm not mad at Nico - sounds like I am. I'm frustrated for him, I feel bad for all the work he's doing but he never gets a break. The ranking system is stupid (my opinion), and with Mr. Disney changing things, he's not getting a break anywhere.

I was especially annoyed after reading this from Gael after he won Sunrise:

"I have good preparation, now I win here so during three days I am relax, I have to stay focused, keep practice hard and see what happens at the Ericsson," Monfils said. "Maybe [Sunrise] is a little bit lower tournament, but anyway if you win, you win a lot of points. And I think sometimes players forget if you win the tournament it's like winning third round in Indian Wells. I think it's a good idea to come here, because there's a lot of good players here so it's not really a similar challenger — I think it's very strong."

So nice that Monfils who is ranked near Nico got his points, but Nico gets nothing even though he made it to the SFs. So I was just annoyed and had to rant.

NicoFan believe me that it's better if we don't find out the explanation of why Nico only could add some points to his ranking if he reaches the semis in Valencia :o but Alx said it and I'm sure that that's why Nico isn't on that entry list, so the ranking system is "helping" a lot again :ras:

and chica stay possitive like Alx said, you never know what could happen, the last year his ranking was even worse and he made it to all the stupid MS events  and he was in Toronto remeber?? :rolls: so just do like I do, stop trying to figure out the great system that the ATP is handling right now

You're right - you never know what will happen.

But remember like I said - you can't compare last year with this year because of Mr. Disney's changes - he's reduced the fields from 64 to 56 - because there are 8 less spots, if Nico's ranking doesn't improve, he's not getting in to any of the MS events for the spring or summer. And also last year, Nico was moving up in the rankings - this year, he's moving down in the rankings.

I'm not comparing the years it was just an example that everything could happen  … so again don't worry (for the moment) and stay positive! :yeah:

How does reducing the field of players in a MS event make it a better event for fans??????? Can ANYONE tell me if De Villars "improvements" are making tennis more popular? What, he thinks his "innovations" will attract new fans? enough to replace the ones that leave due to disgust with it all???

(nothing new in the rant but I had to get it out  )

De Villiers wants all the emphasis on the top players.

He says that people don't come to see the lower ranked players.

It's hard to believe Mr Mickey understands and loves tennis!
One thing's for sure, he doesn't understands fans! I'd like to know if he'd done a survey for telling that!
Of course we like too see the Top players, but the others too!
