Chat with Ivan Ljubicic

Welcome to The Show! On Monday, Ivan Ljubicic will join us live from the Australian Open as he prepares for his second-round match against German Philipp Kohlschreiber.
A hero in his native Croatia after going 11-1 to lead his country to its first-ever Davis Cup title, Ljubicic is the seventh seed in Melbourne and in the first week of the year defeated Carlos Moya for the title in Chennai.

Ljubicic will be with us at 5 p.m. ET, so send your questions now and join us in The Show on Monday afternoon for the answers!

For some reason I can't get a direct link to ESPN's page to work, so please go to the atp site http://www.atptennis.com/en/ and click on their link to ESPN

I like the fact that Ljubicic does these chats. Allows people to know that there are other players besides Americans. Why settle for watching low quality tennis from the Williams sisters just because they are American?

David, Phoenix: What improvements did you make in the offseason?

SportsNation Ivan Ljubicic: (5:18 PM ET ) Not technically, but physically yes. I worked very hard to get in shape and I think it will pay off this season.

Sweet he asnwered my question, and for note that isn't my real name.

ESPN.com's Australian Open coverage

Buzzmaster: (4:56 PM ET ) Ivan will be with us shortly, so keep the questions coming!

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:01 PM ET ) Great to be here and let's get going!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ahmed San Diego: Congrats on your Davis Cup win! My question is how do you adjust to the Australian Open hard courts, and what adjustments do you have to make? By the way great blog on ATPtennis!

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:01 PM ET ) The ball bounces very high here like nowhere else, and it's useful to use a kick serve a lot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wisconsin: What did it feel like to win the Davis cup final? And in the other team's country?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:02 PM ET ) We fully deserved that title because we played two matches away and the Slovaks played all theirs at home. It was a fantastic feeling for our small country. We are very proud of what we achieved there.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Santiago (Buenos Aires, Argentina): After a very good season in 2005, what are your goals for this season? what do you think about the long calendar tennis players have to deal with?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:03 PM ET ) To try to make a big run at one of the Slams and get as high as possible in the rankings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mikel Shybut (North Platte, NE): What do you think of the length of the tennis season?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:04 PM ET ) I don't think it's too long. But I do think we are forced to play too many tournaments. The ranking system is too tough. Players who are fully fit and trying to make as many points play around 25 tournaments and some as many as 30 or more.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sue Poughkeepsie New York: You are in a talented part of the draw, how do you think you will match up with the unseeded and seeded players?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:06 PM ET ) I always have a problem at the Slams and never really played well, so I would really like to focuse on the match in front of me. My first-round match was very difficult, so instead of looking forward I would like to look at my next match, which will be difficult enough.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Erika (Marlboro, New Jersey): What is your opinion on the changes in the doubles game? Will you play doubles?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:07 PM ET ) In the past I played a lot of doubles and I will in the future. The changes are positive, and when the fans and playes get used to the new rules the matches will be better.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Greg (Los Angeles): What is your favorite city to play in?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:08 PM ET ) Monte Carlo and Dubai. They are the most beautiful places I've ever been, the weather is always fantastic and the people are always very nice.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brad (AL): Whats it like facing Federer? How well do u feel like u match up with him?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:09 PM ET ) I don't prepare any differently for any match. You always have to give 110 percent against him and I like playing against him. I like playing against him even though I lost five times last year, but four of them were competitive.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mark (Springfield Mass): Do you plan to do any coaching after you are done playing?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:10 PM ET ) I was not yet thinking about that, but I don't think I will be a full-time coach. I will probably help out with juniors or a player here or there, I don't see myself as a full-time coach.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Martin, Zagreb,Croatia: Who do you think is the best tennis player of all time and why?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:11 PM ET ) I would say it's hard to compare generations, but I will say Rod Laver, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer are the ones at the top of my list. Roger has a little ways to go to get to the others, but that's a good list.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Devon (Seattle): Who are some of your good friends on tour?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:12 PM ET ) Yes, Tomas Johansson, Greg Rusedski and a few others. We go out to dinner, talk about things other than tennis, maybe play cards. Just relax.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carrie, Austin: Which Grand Slam do you think best suits your style of play?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:13 PM ET ) I always play the best at the US Open, but I think my game suits pretty much any surfatce. I just go into every Slam hoping that's the one that is my breakthrough.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mikel Shybut (North Platte, NE): What other hobbies do you have besides tennis?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:14 PM ET ) I read a lot, and I spend time online and sometimes playing computer games. But most of my time is for tennis.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Greg (Los Angeles): How good can big IVO KARLOVIC be?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:16 PM ET ) He's frustrating to play. His serve is just incredible. He is so tall and the angle he is producing is very unusual. A lot of games you don't even touch the ball so it's very difficult to find a rhythm against him. I think he can be very good in the long run. He was unlucky in some matches last year but I hope this is his breakthrough year.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Keith (Tennessee): What do you think about using machines to call lines? Do you think it's a good thing or does it take away from the human element of the game?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:17 PM ET ) I'm still not sure what to think about that. It is something different and would probably bring more excitement to the game, but because it would be on only one or two courts out of 20 it's probably unfair for the players not on the main courts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David, Phoenix: What improvements did you make in the offseason?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:18 PM ET ) Not technically, but physically yes. I worked very hard to get in shape and I think it will pay off this season.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mikel Shybut (North Platte, NE): How do you stay healthy among a sport riddled with injuries?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:19 PM ET ) I know my weak points in my body and I work very hard on them. That's the key. I try to control everything about my fitness and keep up tests to make sure everything is okay.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Andree Wallace (Key West FL.): Do you think Roger can win the four majors in one year?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:20 PM ET ) It would be very difficult for any player, but I think Roger is talented enough. At this point the French looks like his weakest tournement, but I think he could do it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Erika (Marlboro, New Jersey): What is your favorite aspect of tennis life and what is your least favorite?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:22 PM ET ) Least favorite is not having a home for the length of our career. You don't stay anywhere for more and a week or two. But at the same time it's the travel that is the best part of it. You get to see the whole world.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Erika (Marlboro, New Jersey): Are you recognized a lot when you're off the tennis courts? Do you like that or is it annoying?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:23 PM ET ) In Croatia, yes. It's very difficult to go anywhere with everyone coming up to me and congratulating me. Not so much everywhere else but I'm trying to change that.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Martín, Buenos Aires: Kohlschreiber reaches the 4ş round last year in Melbourne. Do you always see the history in the tournaments of the players you have to meet?

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:24 PM ET ) I look at the history, yes. I look to see who he loses to, who he beats easily, what he's done in that tournament in past years. That helps me figure out what his technical weaknesses are and what I need to do to beat him.

Ivan Ljubicic: (5:25 PM ET ) No more time for me. Thanks for the great questions! It was a lot of fun and I hope to do it again very soon!

That was good, I enjoyed that. I tried to post a couple of questions but neither got through:

"Is Andy Roddick your best friend?" and
"Which title would you most like to win this year?"

I think that answer pretty much sums it up at the moment. As soon as he can get that breakthrough, he should become a contender at most of the slams, except RG.

Are the Williams the only Americans that have their moments of low quality tennis? Or are you related to Mary Carillo who thinks everything about the Williams sisters is crap? Venus match was more interesting than watching the golden girl of tennis, maria, in her baby doll dress for men to drool over.
