Joachim "Pim-Pim" Johansson fortsätter skrälla i Australian Open. I natt pangade han ut spanjoren Alberto Martin i tre raka set.
Den svenske 21-åringen har aldrig tidigare nått så här långt i en grand slam-turnering, nu väntar stentufft motstånd - världstrean Juan Carlos Ferrero.

I första omgången avverkade "Pim-Pim" tysken Alexander Popp i tre raka set.
I andra omgången gick det lika lätt mot Alberto Martin: 7-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Spanjoren var rankad som nummer 50 i världen före Australian Open, Joachim Johansson gick in som nummer 90.
Men det är uppenbarligen svensken som är på uppgång.
Tidigare hade "Pim-Pim" bara spelat två grand slam-turneringar och åkt ut direkt.
Nu imponerar han stort i hettan i Australien och har ännu inte tappat ett enda set.

Tio serveäss
I natt fick han in 63 procent av sina förstaservar och dundrade in tio äss. 21-åringen från Södertälje, son till gamle Davis Cup-spelaren Leif Johansson, lever mycket på sitt serve- och volleyspel.
"Pim-Pim" ställs nu mot världstrean Juan Carlos Ferrero. Spanjoren slog i morse ut Filippo Volandri i tre raka set, trots att han hade problem, och fick behandling, för en armbågsskada.
Tillsammans med Thomas Enqvist är han nu "Pim-Pim" Sveriges hopp i Australian Open. Enqvist ställs i tredje omgången mot Andre Agassi, som 29-åringen faktiskt har plusstatistik på (5-4 i inbördes möten).
- Jag ser verkligen fram emot den matchen. Jag vet att mitt spel passar bra mot honom.

Roddick next plays longtime friend and former junior doubles partner Joachim Johansson. The two reached the French Open Junior doubles final in 2000.

It was news to me. I didn't know they were acquainted at all, but I guess since they are a similar age and were elite juniors, it makes sense that they did know each other.

Meanwhile, Johansson is making his rapid rise up the INDESIT ATP Entry Ranking after bursting onto the scene in Stockholm last year, when he advanced to his first ATP quarterfinal. Since then, having teamed up with Bjorkman to win the doubles rubber in their Davis Cup tie in Australia, the 21-year-old has appeared in back-to-back quarterfinals in San Jose and now Memphis.

With a booming serve reaching the 140mph mark against James Blake in his second round match on Thursday - including making 100 percent of his first serves in the opening set - the young Swede is enjoying his breakthrough year.

"It's only the last few months that I've started to play pretty well," said Johansson. "I was ranked around 200 about four months ago, so I'm just enjoying life and have fun when I'm playing. That's my attitude and if I win some matches, it's great."

Impression

Johansson's rise has certainly made an impression on Enqvist, whose old coach Mikael Stripple has taken the reins as Johansson's mentor.

"He's very confident at the moment," said Enqvist. "By playing well in Davis Cup it helped his confidence. With a serve like his he's always going to put himself in a good position against anyone. He has a great coach now, my old one, so he's going to help him understand the game better. With that kind of serve, it's very easy to play the game and Mikael [Stripple] really told him how to use that serve in the best way possible."

It was during the Davis Cup that Johansson's serve gave notice that he could threaten Andy Roddick's 150mph record, and it's something Enqvist believes could happen soon.

"At the Davis Cup he looked at the radar gun after every single serve he hit," said Enqvist. "When you're 30 you don't really do that anymore. Me and Bjorkman, we just try to win the point, we don't really care how fast we hit it. And he plays with a really small racquet - a very thin, tightly strung Head Prestige. Imagine if he played with Roddick's racquet - a wide one - you'd have to give him a special license."

Johansson Storms into his First ATP Final

Swedish star Joachim Johansson cruised through to his first ATP final with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over No. 2 seed Mardy Fish in the semifinals of the Kroger St. Jude in Memphis.

Johansson fired 15 aces and made 70 percent of his first serves as blew his American opponent aside in just 52 minutes.

"I've been serving very well this week and playing well from the baseline so I'm happy with my game so far," said Johansson. "I think I raised my game today from yesterday. It feels great to be in my first final, especially with the way I've been playing this week and to be in my first final in the States feels nice for me."

The 21-year-old dropped just one point on his serve in the opening set - that coming as he had three set points at 5-2, 40-0 - as Fish struggled to come to terms with the Swede's power just as Hyung-Taik Lee, James Blake and Xavier Malisse had before him.

Confidence

Fish, who was hoping to reach his second consecutive ATP final having lost to Andy Roddick in San Jose last week, had lost the first set in his first two matches this week against Olivier Mutis and Frederic Niemeyer. And the 22-year-old American made the worst possible start as Johansson broke Fish in the opening game of the match.

After sending down four consecutive aces to lead 3-1, Johansson was clearly brimming with confidence and was showing no sign of nerves in his first ATP semifinal. The Swede closed out the first set with his seventh ace of the match and made 15 of 17 first serves (88 percent) in the opener.

Johansson kept up the pressure in the second set, breaking the Fish serve to lead 2-1 with more breathtaking forehands from the baseline. As the crowd tried to lift the American's spirits, Fish responded with some tremendous defense to hang in, and twice had Johansson at 15-30 on his serve.

But Fish failed to capitalize as Johansson consistently drew upon his arsenal to get himself out of any trouble. At 5-4, he served for a place in his first final with two aces, finishing with his 15th of the match at 105mph out wide. He has now held serve 43 consecutive games in the tournament, and has only faced four break points.

And the Swede is not planning on changing anything ahead of Sunday's final. "I'm not used to being this far in an ATP tournament, so of course I got a little bit tight towards the end of the match," said Johansson. "But a match is a match still, so even if I have a chance to win the tournament tomorrow, I have to take it just as another match and see how it goes."

Dangerous

Fish, who had reached back-to-back semifinals for the first time in his career, had won both of their previous matches at last year's Australian and US Opens but it was a different story this time. "He's very dangerous," said Fish. "Today he showed he can serve big, hit big groundstrokes and goes for his shots. If I had his serve, that's the way that I would play if I were him - on the return games, go for your shots and then hold serve at love every time.

" It's pretty easy to be care-free on the return games when he knows he's got his serve in his back pocket. In the end, I would have liked to have played four out of seven sets - I was getting better and better at the end of the second set but he was just too good.

"I definitely didn't expect an easy match going out. At the US Open, we played on Arthur Ashe, it was my first match there but I was more used to a match like that. He's getting more and more experienced in situations like this and his game has developed a ton. Obviously physically he's bigger than everyone else, but mentally was his weakest point. This year and last year, he's really come on strong."

Johansson Claims First Career Title


Joachim Johansson claimed his first ATP title with a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory over Germany's Nicolas Kiefer to win the Kroger St. Jude in Memphis.

The Swede fired seven aces - and a total of 78 for the week - during the 1-hour, 34-minute win. Johansson becomes the fourth different Swedish winner in Memphis, joining Bjorn Borg, Stefan Edberg and Magnus Larsson. He also became the first Swede to win an ATP title since Jonas Bjorkman won Nottingham in June 2002.

"It feels great," said Johansson. "There have been three other Swedish players to win this title and now I'm the fourth. It's been some time since a Swedish player has a won a tournament.

"I haven't seen that much of Memphis but it's always going to be very close to my heart for the rest of my life. I always wanted to win an ATP tournament, so to do it here. It was a great crowd out there so it's going to be very special for me."

Holding Serve

The 6'6" Johansson was not broken throughout the week, holding serve 55 consecutive games, and faced just five break points during the tournament. He has not lost his serve since the fourth game of the first set of his quarterfinal loss to Andy Roddick in San Jose, having held serve a total of 63 consecutive games.

En route to his first career final, he defeated Hyung-Taik Lee, No. 6 seed James Blake, Xavier Malisse and No. 2 seed Mardy Fish.

"It was one of my goals to win a tournament this year," said Johansson. "I'd won a few challengers and I was playing well at the end of last year so I was hoping I could keep that form up and keep playing like that this year and that's what happened. But I didn't expect to win my first title so soon."

Kiefer, who was appearing in his 13th career ATP final and his first in the United States, was looking to win his first title since Hong Kong in 2000. The 26-year-old German, who was making his first appearance in Memphis, ended a six-match losing streak prior to the tournament with victories over Eric Taino, Jurgen Melzer, Jan-Michael Gambill and Thomas Enqvist to reach the final.

Repeat

The final between Johansson and Kiefer was a repeat of their first round match in San Jose, which Johansson won in three sets. Both players started the final well with the first set going comfortably with serve until Johansson handed Kiefer a set point at 4-5 with a double fault. But the Swede responded with a 126 mph ace out wide to stop the danger.

In the tie-break, Kiefer began with a double fault of his own and Johansson stormed into a 4-2 lead before pushing a volley long to allow Kiefer to get back on terms. But Johansson produced another stunning forehand winner to open up two set points, and, after missing a 130mph second serve on the first, Kiefer hit a forehand wide to hand the Swede the first set.

Confidence

Brimming with confidence, Johansson started the second set firing on all cylinders. With the Swede up 4-3, Kiefer double faulted for the sixth time in the match to hand Johansson the crucial break, and he converted his third match point to seal a famous victory.

"I think today he had much more confidence than last week [in San Jose]," said Kiefer. "He's won a few matches here. I played much better than last week but I didn't get so many chances on his serve. He has a big serve. I had a few 15-30 chances but he came up with the big serves and it just didn't go my way today. He deserved to win."
Despite the loss, Kiefer said he was pleased with the way his week went.

"If someone had told me when I came here last Saturday that I would be in the final, I would have taken it straight away," said the German. "You work the whole year to win tournaments, and when you get to the final you want to win. But there is only one winner.

" Anyway, it's a great success for me to be in the final and to have won four great matches, also to show to myself that I can still do it. All the great work is paying off. I didn't play my best tennis for many months. I just tried to stay in during the first round, the second round again I played a bad match, but I just tried to stay in. Match by match it came back and now I feel very good for the next few tournaments in the States and looking forward to winning some matches."

He held his serve 54 times in consequetively in the tournament. For that reason Joachim ''Pim-Pim''Johansson became the 26th Swede to win a ATP-title in tennis. Johansson won the tournament in Memphis after beating German Nicolas Kiefer in straight sets 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

The 198 centimetre tall Swede has a phenomenal serve that the new coach Mikael Stripple is teaching him to utilise to the max.

It showed not least in sunday afternoon's final against Nicolas Kiefer. Johansson struck only seven aces against Kiefers ten. But Johansson hit more than two thirds of his first serves -and when first serves also hit inside the lines, the Swede won almost 90 percent of the points. Kiefer only had a breakboll the entire match -and Johansson was able to hold his serve through the match through.

In the first set, the games played forward to a tiebreak. There Johansson showed a sample of a nice returer, he won tiebreak with 7-5 and the set with 7-6. 21-years old, and turning 22 on 1 july this year, continued his serve convincingly in the second set. Johansson held his service easily and went forth to lead with 4-3. Then came the chance the swede waited on. Kiefers serve misfired and Johansson got himself two break points. Svensken looked to have missed the chance when he lobbed out with some centimeters margin, but Johansson returned too and got himself then a third break point. On that one he needed no return because Kiefer struck a double fault. Johansson needed then ''only'' to hold his serve for the 54th time to gain his first ATP-title and swedens 258th. But it was easier said than done.

Johansson served another ace to get to 40-15 and two match points. But then the umpire did not see that the Swede's first serve on the the first match point was clearly out and Kiefer began to protest so powerfully that in the end he got a warning. The compromise was that Johansson got to hit a new first serve, but now the Swede was not entirely in balance and missed both match points. But Johansson got himself a third match point -and that one missed he not. After a good serve, he went to the net and ended the point smartly with a stoppvolley -and then Pim-Pim could lift his hands against the american the sky (actually roof) in a victory sigh. Sent på söndagskvällen tog 21-åringen från Södertälje sin första, mycket efterlängtade ATP-titel.

Och långt ifrån den sista, vågar vi påstå.
Han finalbesegrade tysken Nicolas Kiefer med 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 på hardcourt inomhus i Memphis - och bröt en lång svensk "titeltorka" på touren.

Johansson tog Sveriges första singeltitel på tjugo månader, sedan Jonas Björkman vann på gräset i Nottingham den 22 juni 2002.

The pattern was the same in the final. "Pim-Pim" served sharply but also showed a solid baseline game. Without a wide repertoire no one will win any ATP-titles in 2004.

Stefan Edberg, Thomas Johansson and Magnus Larsson are some examples of Swedish players who had hard serves and had success serving their way to titles.

But none of them had a first serve á la Joachim Johansson. When "Pim-Pim" reaches his 198cm frame and clips the ball, he has a service speed around 240km/h.

So he gets many easy points thanks to that special weapon. This gives him the chance to take more risks on his opponents serve.

The number 71 ranked Johanssn defeated the 57th ranked Kiefer for the second week in a row. After he saved a set point in the first set with an ace, of course, the Swede broke serve in the middle of the 2nd set and held serve to 6-3.

"Pim-Pim" got 67 percent of his serves in and hit 8 aces, he total of 78 in 5 matches. He didn't lose a serve in 55 service games in the tournament.

The victory was worth $128,000 around 930 000 kronor. It was Sweden's 258th title in mens singles and Johansson became the 26th winner in the order

Joachim, who turns 22 in July, is now the best in his family. His father Leif a huge talent who stopped playing in 1974 because of injuries, never won a major title. But still are happy enough today.

Yes! He definitely is! Tomorrow he plays Odesnik from the U.S.A. He'll be playing on court 6 the fourth match up. That's the smallest of the regular courts. They've put up two others that they will play a few matches on too that are even smaller. Jan Frode Anderson will be playing on Court 8.

The men's quallies are being sandwiched in around the first round women's matches.

Pim Pim lost. I am desolate.

He played so very badly. His first serve percentage was bad. He hit the ball into the net so many times. He hit long. There were streaks of good play, but not enough. His opponent was determnined to win. I don't know what was wrong with Pim Pim's head. Maybe he thought he should be in the main draw and this was only a formality ( Iknow that is what I was thinking) :(

And I hate to divide up my comments between all the threads. I like all the Swedes and wish we had only one thread where we could discuss them all.

I saw Robin practicing yesterday with Sluiter. They were sharing a court with Schuettler and somebody I didn't know. Robin is cuter in person than in pictures. and he doesn't look as young.

I was fortunate enough to go to the Toronto TMS and to meet our boy Pim Pim. I have to say that I wasn't a huge fan of him prior to Toronto just cuz I had never really seen him play. However, all I can say about the kid now is that he is a total sweetie!
As of right now he is at the top of my list of players who are nice in person. I was just blown away by how polite Joachim is towards everyone. The workers at the tournament (drivers, ushers, etc) absolutely loved him as he was the only, and I mean THE ONLY player to talk to them. On top of that, he always took time to sign autographs and take pictures with the fans.
After his victory against Carraz, my brother and I called him over to sign for us and he was so adorable! I asked him if I could have his towel and he just smiled and said, 'sure' I was drooling because this guy just makes you wanna marry him. Joachim is also one of the few players who makes eye contact with the fans (contrary to Roddick, Agassi, Coria, Gonzalez, and the list just goes on and on).
I highly other fans to approach Pim-Pim if they get the chance because when it comes to friendliness, he is 'da man' :)

The guy is friends with everyone!!! I think it's because of the languages he speaks: English (which most players do), Russian (a few do), and Spanish (like 50% of the tour is Spanish-Speaking nowadays).

:sad: all my faves are losing today and Pimpim just added on to it... this stinks... but like u said, he should be very proud of his win and at aleast from that scoreline, challenging Ivan. and he was the last swede standing even tho it was only the 2nd round :)

Areas where Pim Pim needs to improve:
* Return of serve (if this improves, Joachim will most definitely be a solid Top 10 player. He is already virtually unbreakable, so if his return improves, it will only take him one break to close anyone out)
* Becoming faster (after all he is 6'6")
* Flexing his knees more when he hits ground strokes (again, he is very tall and tends to miss in the net a lot)

Areas of Strength:
* Mental Toughness (he is mentally very solid, never gets down on himself, fights for every point, and recognizes when the oponent hits a shot that is just too good)
* Slice backhand (he can change the direction of his slice backhand better than most players on the tour, this shot also stays really low)
* Power (he's a big-hitter who ALWAYS goes for his shots)
* Volleys (since he's so tall, it's difficult to pass him)

in his areas of strength, dont forget his serve :p

My only hope now is Carlos Moya. And I really really want someone kick Roddick's butt back to Texas or Florida or to wherever he lives nowadays!!!!
From now on, I vow to stop watching Olympic tennis!!!!! I have to focus on rooting to Pim Pim next week in Long Island.

yeah!! since Moya beat my favorite player Enqvist, want him to win it all! especially against Roddick! i can't stand Roddick. i don't know why, i used to like him, but i usually root for the underdog, and since he got popular, i figured he didn't need me as a fan anymore, so i focused on my other favorites JMG and Enqvist. Plus, (i know he's good and all but...) i think he's overrated. maybe that's just cause i really don't like him.

Yesterday was a pretty sad day for me as Guga and Jonas lost. But today was definitely heart breaking, first Ferrero loses to Fish, then Pim Pim loses to Ljubicic, then Safin loses to Lopez, then Haas loses to Roddick, and then, just to make matters worst my beloved Roger Federer loses to Berdych who????? Anyway, I'm sorry for everyone who has lost their favorites in this tournament. But at least have some perspective. Pim Pim didn't have a shot at getting a medal here minus a miracle. I am happy about his performance. Of course he needs to continue to improve, but he had a good win, and was consistent with his general performance on the tour.

I think that most people who support Pim Pim are realistic about his potential in tournaments. I don't support players just because they win. :)

Despite his incredibly crap first round at the Olympics; Jurgen is capable :yeah:

The problem of having an oponent like Jurgen is that when the guy is on, there is really nothing that you can do about it. But then again, as long as Pim Pim can hold serve, which he will most likely do, he should be fine.

This is a great opportunity for Pim Pim as Andre Agassi also withdrew from the tourney.

Okay, I think that there must be a conspiracy going on against Pim Pim. I mean, last night he left the court at like 12:30 a.m. Why does he always have to be the last one to play???
They did that to him in Toronto too, I was there watching his match against Saulnier and they played until one thirty in the morning. I just think that this is really unfair especially at the TD Waterhouse tournament where they only had two matches at Center Court and decided to squeeze four at the Grandstand starting at 7:00 p.m. Why don't they start earlier if they are going to have that many matches????
