Based on Serra's recent form, Ferrer is going home early. :)

Also backing Melzer to beat Ginepri.

I hope Tommy wins vs Gasquet, which would be the upset, but on the other hand this match is close to both sides. I mean it would be an upset for Tommy too to lose to Gasquet and I really don't know the way it takes.

Gasquet and Coria. Sadly I think Ferrer might go too  as he has an ankle inujry and isn't 100% fit. I hope Ancic goes because that means Calleri will win ;) but I don't think it is that likely.

Richard Gasquet FRA (14) vs. Tommy Haas GER
Juan Carlos Ferrero ESP (15) vs. Tomas Zib CZE

yeah, Tomas Zib could make an upset. their head 2 head (http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/headtohead/head2head.asp?player1=Zib%2C+Tomas&player2=Juan+Ferrero) record tied 1-1.
JCF pulled through their latest meet in USO 2004 in 5sets.

"You must spread some reputation around before giving it to Jez again". Great idea - as long as they don't release him too near to where I live  - though guess I'm probably safe as I live quite near to Wimbledon.

Haas should beat Gasquet. I expect Tommy to move up enough soon to be seeded in the top 20 himself.

Davydenko's 1R is dangerous also...

I think Ferrer will lose too.

edit: I overlooked Coria/Hanescu. I think Coria will also get beaten. Hanescu is a very solid player on hardcourt.

I know Gasquet has not started the year well but I think ironically the 5 set format may work towards Gasquet's favor and he could actually pull out a win. So, many people might get surprised by the result.

I know Gasquet has not started the year well but I think ironically the 5 set format may work towards Gasquet's favor and he could actually pull out a win. So, many people might get surprised by the result. It makes sense because he has simply not had the chance to work his way into some rhythm, but with this format he could lose a set or two but then start to find his confindence and rhythm. It's obviously the match of the 1st round and I'd love t be able to see it.

I'd consider that these guys are "upset potential:"

Nikolay Davydenko RUS (5) vs. Ivo Karlovic CRO
Guillermo Coria ARG (6) vs. Victor Hanescu ROM

Richard Gasquet FRA (14) vs. Tommy Haas GER
Juan Carlos Ferrero ESP (15) vs. Tomas Zib CZE
James Blake USA (20) vs. Jose Acasuso ARGI'd basically agree with that. I don't think all of those WILL Be upsets, but as you said, they all seem to have the potential.

Davydenko has the return game to tame big Ivo.
Gasquet is at risk of going out to Haas.
Hewitt should sweep Vik aside.
ToJo might well go out, he's been injured and Saulnier can be a danger when he's on form.

Saulnier :haha: He hasn't been on form for yonks. But yeah I agree with what you say...Tojo is in some danger particularly as he is not 100%.

I see Vik as either being a real problem for Hewitt, or being a bug ready to be squashed. I don't think there is any middle ground. He will scrap the point out from the baseline and he doesn't have any real weapon so if Hewitt is on then he will kill him.

After the first day, All of the above get advanced to the next round. They all finished their show within 4 sets except the 4th seed :o ,who made his fans really upset!

The only seeds crashed out are Carlos Moya(32) and Taylor Dent(27).

Tommy Haas GER def. Richard Gasquet FRA (14) 6-2 7-5 6-2
Tomas Zib CZE vs. Juan Carlos Ferrero ESP (15) (in progress)

The 2nd day's much more exciting. Coria, Davydenko, Hewitt and Hrbaty all survived in five sets. Unfortunately, the 9th seed Gonzalez failed to pull through a five set match to join the winning club. the 14th seed Gasquet's loss was pretty much expected. JCF's now leading by 2 sets and a break, hopefully he'll pass the 1st round.
Again this year we've got two unlucky top 20 seeds knocked out in the 1st round. ;)
