Awful is the new awesome

The Movies.

“Shopgirl” — A how-not-to on landing and maintaining a Sugar Daddy. It was better when they called it “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.”
Why you should see it anyway: Because it’s maddeningly, fascinatingly insistent that it’s about relationships when really it’s about booty calls and who’s got the power. It even goes so far as to punish the film’s sole character, a golddigging slut played by Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, who dares to announce the truth about the female lives on display.

<title>AP CelebrityFocus: Jason Schwartzman (11/28/05)</title>
<description>AP Broadcast Entertainment Editor Michael Weinfeld talks to Jason Schwartzman about why he says dating is going to the dogs and why he wouldn't see Bridgette Wilson-Sampras in her lingerie until the last minute in Shopgirl.</description>

"Shopgirl" is an intimate story told amid the sprawl of Los Angeles. Dozens of people appear in many scenes, but this is really a story of three characters. The only supporting player of significance is Lisa (Bridgette Wilson-Sampras), a gold-digging blonde who works Saks' perfume counter.

Lisa exists mostly to contrast Mirabelle, but she does get the loudest, lustiest laughs in this otherwise serene tale. She seduces Jeremy after mistaking him for Ray. Jeremy is none the wiser. When Lisa passionately yells, "Oh, Ray!" he assumes she's chanting something from the Kama Sutra.

Aside from this brief but entertaining detour into bedroom farce, "Shopgirl" is an intelligent, mature and wry comedy of manners. The three main characters are all sympathetic, and each is portrayed with understanding and warmth.

angiel
01-10-2006, 09:39 PM
"Shopgirl" is essentially a story about how appearances aren't everything, but unfortunately, there's little to perceive beneath the surface. Martin is playing a middle-aged divorced man who is emotionally aloof, yet he is also so pinched that we really can't comprehend the emotions he's hiding. As for Jason Schwartzman, the colorless star of "Rushmore" and "I Heart Huckabees," he's such a charmless and obnoxious leading man that he doesn't begin to convey an inner life worth knowing. As radiant as Claire Danes is, the romantic entanglements are so uninspiring that she can't really anchor her performance. Bridgette Wilson-Sampras as an Amazon tigress who seduces Jeremy provides the only snap in the picture. "Shopgirl" ultimately has little to sell. -Kevin Courrier

angiel
01-10-2006, 09:44 PM
Steve Martin doesn't goof it up and his character, the wealthy software magnate, is charming and generous with his money. His understated performance recalls Bill Murray in Lost In Translation. Schwartzmann plays his character as being loopy and awkward. You've got to wonder how many elegant women like Mirabelle would be interested in someone like him, even if they are both artists. There's really no chemistry between them. Claire Danes is very good as the small town girl in the big city. She's not the most attractive woman in the film, with some of the lesser-actresses being truly stunning, like Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Pete Sampras' wife, who portrays the perfume-selling, scheming Lisa. But Danes is very watchable with her big brown eyes, quiet demure, solemn vulnerability and classic beauty.

angiel
01-10-2006, 09:47 PM
Danes gives a heartfelt performance, but with a character that is just not all that interesting, even as she is puzzling over the artwork she works at between bouts with the glove counter and her suitors. As for Martin, he is so low-key as to be a non-entity, and while Schwartzman is completely adorable with his puppy-dog eagerness without an outlet, Jeremy remains essentially a one-dimensional prop in Mirabella's life, serving only as the measure of everything that Ray is not. Shooting like a flash of scarlet on a beige canvas is Bridgette Wilson-Sampras as Mirabelle’s gold-digging and very jealous co-worker whose approach is calculating, profane, and yet, oddly, she is the most emotionally honest of any character in the film.

angiel
01-10-2006, 09:52 PM
Shopgirl, the movie.

The Good
The film is rescued by Claire Danes’s performance – she’s heart-breakingly good as Mirabelle. In addition, the various dating scenes are sharply observed and provide welcome comic relief. There is also strong comic support from Bridgette Wilson-Sampras as a bitchy colleague of Mirabelle’s, who gives her some hilarious dating advice.

angiel
01-10-2006, 09:53 PM
So, why the high rating? Surprisingly, there is a cornucopia of delightfully enchanting and poignant moments littering this film. Jeremy, feeling rejected by Mirabelle after their first date, mumbles as he walks out of earshot, "OK. That's fine. (I love you.) Goodnight." As Ray takes Mirabelle on a tour of his house, he unassumingly shows her everything including his recycling bins, his laundry room cabinets and his garage. And a case of mistaken identity between Jeremy and sneaky Saks perfume-girl Lisa (Bridgette Wilson-Sampras) leads to one of the most hilarious sex scenes in recent memory.

Yeh she just left cos she was gettin overpowered, he left on his terms. Btw U know pete started to relaly hate the tour after he stayed number 1 for 6 years. I think that hed have to come back in full form and prove that federers competition isnt that great, but it will NEVER EVER EVER EVER HAPPEN!!! BTW Federer won 7 titles and is now considered to be on the way to smashing Petes record because they believe he is going to win the French Open and complete the calendar grandslam :( im so depressed guys please help cheer me up give me some hope of feeling better. I mean Marcos ran outta steam and Federer had the easy draw, Federer gets so lucky and his opponents are all losers because they are scared of him and screw up on key points so if he makes finals he will win. And hes got a 52 match winning streak on hard courts. IM GOING INSANE

Everytime Roger won a slam they say the same thing ( he is going to do this and he his going to do that) but since he has not won the French Open as yet, I am not worried, the others guys on the tour will have to wake yake though, as for breaking Pete's record, they say that too everytime he won also - what wlse is new?

Dont worry yourself my dear - it ma never happens.

I bet current pete, Old guy with a weak back affected by years of injuries but as hard hitting as any loser on tour, and still the most talented player of all time. Would only need a few months to get into athelete style shape with only several months (possibly several weeks) to train and he could come back and cause a stir by messing up Roger and any other player who thinks less of Pete.

I think the most amazing thing that pete could ever do is to rest and relax and have his body heal from all the injuries (Cos even know, there will be some things that need healing) and then just train and train and come back and win the french just because HE CAN, and thats it, Go THROUGH qualifyings and win it, that is the one thing which is my biggest dream for pete sampras which will never come true sadly. THe only thing better would be for him to come back and since he doesnt need a good ranking, he wouldnt have to play lots of hard top level tournaments, and he can just win the calendar grandslam :) hehehe wouldnt that be the most amazing things.

Trust me if anybody can come back and make an impact is Pete - remember Pete won when he was sick and in pain and hw also won when his ranking was low - if he want to come play again none of that would stop him, and he would get lots of help to get into shape - the same think you said about him come back and winning the french Open is on my mind too - and I believe he could do it. :worship: :worship: :wavey:

Titbits about "ShopGirl" the movie.

Next: "Shopgirl." I'd seriously considered seeing this at the theater but hadn't made it. Now I'm glad I didn't. It's a sweet movie, but nothing I'd want to have spent $10 on. Seeing Claire Danes did make me miss the criminally overlooked "My So-Called Life," one of the very best TV shows about modern adolescence.

"Shopgirl" was interrupted by some towering thunderstorms over northern Australia, which for ten or fifteen minutes put on a more compelling show out my window. I especially enjoyed the scenes in which lightning leapt from the underbelly of one cloud to another. Bravo.

My wife would have loved Mirabelle's (Danes) dresses in the movie. And Bridgette Wilson-Sampras--even when she's evil, she's drop-dead gorgeous. But clearly my mind wasn't on the movie.

The plot, in which Mirabelle must choose between a rich suitor (Steve Martin) or a hapless, aimless boyfriend (Jason Schwartzman) did make me wonder whether the story, based on a book by Steve Martin, is at least partly autobiographical, and whether it's meant as an apology to a too-young shopgirl out there somewhere.

Horizon Organic(R) Makeover Program Offers Simple Steps for Going Organic; Organic Coach Shows Consumers How to Make the Switch

BROOMFIELD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 3, 2006--While the number of Americans who have tried organic foods jumped to 65 percent last year, many consumers say they need information about the organic label and why organic foods are important to healthful living and well-being.(1) In response, Horizon Organic(R), the leading manufacturer of organic dairy products, today unveiled an organic makeover initiative, partnering with moms to educate families about the benefits of organic.

Horizon Organic's makeover program features distinct steps for incorporating organic foods into a family's everyday life:

Seven Simple Steps to an Organic Lifestyle

-- Step 1 - Take inventory and read labels
-- Look inside your family's refrigerator and pantry. Be
sure to look beyond the nutritional panel to the
ingredient list. Do the labels include many ingredients
you've never heard of? Steer clear of added chemicals by
adding organic foods to your grocery lists.
-- Step 2 - Start with staples
-- It's easy to make simple choices that make a big
difference in your family's eating habits. When creating
your grocery list, start adding organic "staples" like
organic dairy, fruits and vegetables.
-- Step 3 - Refuel with snacks
-- Going too long without eating can make you feel tired and
cranky. Healthy organic snacks that include protein and
carbohydrates - like organic cheese sticks or apples -
will help keep your energy levels high throughout the
day, and they are easy grab-and-go snacks.
-- Step 4 - Make lunches fun to educate kids on organic
-- Eating habits are formed during childhood, so it's
important to consider what's in kids' lunchboxes and make
preparation fun by involving the kids - provide them with
several organic choices and let them choose what they eat
for lunch. One of the easiest ways to increase school
lunch nutrition is to pack some of your kids' favorite
foods while opting for organic alternatives where you
can.
-- Step 5 - Look for the organic seal
-- Products that have not been certified cannot be labeled
"organic." You should look for the USDA seal on products
to know the products are organic.
-- Step 6 - Experiment with organic recipes
-- Once you have taken the step to add organic foods to your
refrigerator or pantry, use organic in your everyday
recipes to show your family that organic foods taste
great! For instance, add some blended butternut squash to
organic macaroni and cheese - this provides your family
with a vegetable and adds fun, natural color to the meal.
For variety, look for delicious recipes for any meal or
occasion online at www.horizonorganic.com.
-- Step 7 - Be a role model
-- If you lead by example and feed yourself nutritious
organic foods, your kids will develop similar healthy
eating habits. Teach your kids valuable lessons in
nutrition and good eating habits that they'll carry with
them.

Horizon Organic's makeover program seeks to illuminate how easy it is to go organic; how simple organic choices can make a difference for families, communities and the environment; and how organic products are good for consumers because they are produced without antibiotics, added growth hormones or dangerous pesticides.

As part of the makeover program, Horizon Organic, along with registered dietician and organic makeover coach Ellie Krieger - author and TV chef - will provide all of the steps, tips and ideas that moms and families need to go organic. Specifically, they will demonstrate how one family - actress Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, her husband Pete and their two children - can incorporate organic foods into their everyday lives.

"Everyone needs help. With two kids, it's hard getting the right foods that are not only healthy but taste good," said Bridgette. "This makeover program is easy, and I can't believe how much I'm learning about food and hope my experience can serve as a model for other families."

Consumers can go online at www.horizonorganic.com to obtain the same steps and also discover an array of tools to use for their organic makeover. The tools include organic household tips, sample grocery lists, meal plans, recipes, information on current organic research and other great resources and links.

"What I always hear from my clients is that they want to learn and understand how to eat better and feed their families," said Ellie. "Not only do you need to make it simple, you need to hand them the right tools, start out slowly and give them simple steps they can fold into their routine. Everyone starts at a different place."

As consumers grow knowledgeable about the health benefits of organic foods, they realize that simple choices like organic dairy can make a big difference in their families' lives.

Shopgirl Showcases The Artistic Side Of Mr. Funny.

By Rick dennis
May 27 2006

There are two sides to Steve Martin.

Steve the Brand Name takes the money and runs in family-friendly piffle like Cheaper By The Dozen 2 so that Steve the Serious Artist can afford to co-produce personal little films like Shopgirl in which he plays a Los Angeles dot com millionaire with commitment issues involved in a bittersweet affair with a stoic young Saks Fifth Avenue sales clerk (Claire Danes).

Martin adapted the screenplay from his 2001 novella but you don't have to read the book to know these two characters are not on the same page. Claire longs for an intimate relationship to ease the pain of an almost all-consuming loneliness. While Steve buys her gifts and even pays off her student loan he remains emotionally unavailable.

Danes' quiet, graceful and nuanced performance may be the best of an already impressive career.

"I can either hurt now or hurt later," her character murmurs as the cruel truth sinks in and when she turns to Steve something crystalline and lovely and fragile has broken behind the eyes. "Now - I guess," she says simply.

Like the guy he plays in the film Martin has had his own problems with emotional commitment. Too often in the past he has shown a reluctance to fully engage with his characters in portraying deeply affecting moments in their lives but there is not a trace of hipster irony in his performance here.

Most "foxy grandpa meets female young enough to be his you-know-what" scenarios play out like some middle-aged male wish fulfillment fantasy. This one seems like something that could actually happen in emotionally alienated El Lay where age differences melt like ice cream in the heat of the noonday smog and people reach out in quiet desperation to establish some kind of human connection. Martin's script is rumoured to be partly autobiographical, which could explain that.

Brit director Anand Tucker (Hilary and Jackie) lenses the movie like kind of American art film and in this case the approach works. Although the pace and tone of the film is somber and melancholy the script bristles with barbed worldlywise wit.

"You know how to find out if he really loves you?" Beverly Hills bombshell Bridgette Wilson advises Vermont-born Claire. "You call him sweetheart and watch what he does."

Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore) supplies some humorous moments as a poor, socially inept goofball who refers to himself as an artist ("You know Holydog Amps? I do their logo") and whose idea of a good time is taking Claire to L.A.'s City Walk to sit and stare at the neon ("I come here to think about fonts.")

"Can I kiss you or what?" he asks following their first date. "The point being?" she replies.

You get the feeling this is the kind of role Martin himself would have played in his younger days - before he became Steve the Artist.

Some old titbits i find on the web - enjoy guys and tell me what you think.

Why do tennis players with attractive wives always play poorly? When Andre Agassi was married to Brooke Shields, his career plummeted. Pete Sampras hasn’t won a Grand Slam event since marrying Bridgette Wilson. Maybe tennis players should start marrying ugly women in an attempt to resurrect their careers. I hear wedding bells for Michael Chang and Marge Schott … Heroine is bad news …
